Because avocados are soooo spendy here on this side of the pond, I don't purchase them often, but oh how I do love them. I would be sooo grateful for only a few of them! LoL! We do love zucchini bread too, and have a wonderful supply of it in the summer time. It is even tasty just steamed with butter and grated parmesan cheese sprinkled atop! When I find a great deal on avocado, I will mash it up with a little lemon juice and salsa. Drop by spoon full on baking sheet (like cookie dough),then freeze. After they are frozen I put them in a freezer bag and back in freezer. Then I have individual servings that defrost really quick when I want them.
We struggle a little with our power availability to run the dehydrator for things that take long hours, I love the idea of it, but its not overly feasible for us in our situation :D
Hi Nyssa I've been freezing heaps of avocado's. Cutting them in half, putting some lemon juice on them, then vacuum sealing them for the freezer. My son pulls them out of the freezer to take to work for lunch and by that time they are thawed and ready to eat! They don't go brown at all, not sure if it's the vacuum sealer or lemon juice, but it works well, I've actually chopped them chunky to put in salad and that also is fine. Anyway have a great Sunday and the chickens are lovely. I have six myself and just love them 😊
Our rescue chooks came back beautifully we had to cull a couple who's beaks had been so badly cropped that they split so they were in 4 pieces horrible practice our nesting boxes are old mower catchers they seem to like the darker hidey hole when the weather's gross again great content and I love hearing and seeing The pure Aussieness of your place
A few have some significant clipped beaks, but I've been watching them eat and they all seem to be managing ok so far! We'll keep an eye on it though! We definitely need to close in the nesting space a little, make it a bit darker and more protected from the weather, Someone else once told me about the catchers, I think its a great idea if you can get them!
My partner and I recused 25 chooks from a free range farm. Third year having them and they lay pretty much all year round now. In great condition now. They love dried corn and wheat. Summer is an egg hunt everyday. my daughter loves it.
I've made guacamole with avocados and frozen it in portions. Lime/lemon juice (fresh or bottle) salt snd chilli flakes, all to taste. Comes out amazingly fresh and yum!
I love the new chickens! I'm so, so happy you were able to get them and they don't even know how lucky they are that they now are a part of a wonderful family!!! They will never go hungry or ever be abused! And they will have lots of attention! The pen looks great and Rainbow is such a handsome rooster! You r right! Those mandarins looked great! Made my mouth water, lol!
I'm so glad we were able to give them a home at minimal cost to us and can love on them till they are in full feather again :D. He is such a nice looking rooster isn't he! :D

My ears perked up at apple butter BBQ sauce. I have some apple butter that didn't set, just use it on icecream. I looked up a recipe and it sounds good, so shall be making some.
I made a batch when I had a huge glut of apples and everyone loved it, so I made a bunch more thick apple sauce/butter and canned it as is so I could make more, but I shall use some of these apples too, its definitely a fave of the kids, though I did tone down the sugar a lot!

If the fam enjoy smoothies Avos can be added like Bananas to make them a bit more creamy. Which being dairy free might be a nice change. I’ve also seen them used as a dairy free mousse. I’ve not tried but I reckon it would be worth a try 😊😊

The hens are settling in great. Egg hunt every day. Lol. I froze our avo slices for smoothie plain and they did brown but the ones I pureed then added lemon juice ,s&p too ,I squashed flat in zip locks and got the air out and they look great . I have 2 big zuchini that I'm making bread with today. Yummo. Thank you for sharing your day 🤩
I was thinking a bit of acid might stop them from browning, I don't want to waste them! Found 5 eggs this morning when I went to check on them, and a few that were paper eggs and had collapsed, which is not unexpected after yesterdays stress!
You can freeze the avocados in chunks - great to use in smoothies from frozen or in guac or salads defrosted. Just dip them in lemon juice and lay them flat on a sheet to freeze. Then just put them in a freezer bag and take them out as needed. And I couldn’t help but think of zucchini fritters when i saw them in that big bag. My kids loved them when they were still at home and my daughter now makes them for her littles.

Yes, a lot of people don't realise they can receive them even if they don't fit a certain criteria, just because you don't fit a specific situation doesn't mean that something like this wouldn't be helpful :D

$25 for pullets is SO cheap! Even $10 for the ‘rejects’ is a good deal. They’ll come back and start laying again, we only get battery/free range farm rejects and most of them lay for years. A few die fairly quickly, but I don’t mind as ours are usually $3-5 and I feel happy that they’ve had a few weeks/months of being a proper hen
Yes, 25 is a good price! and these hens are doing pretty well so far, we have had 6 eggs (and a few paper thin ones) so far already today, they're all still alive this morning which I was a little concerned about because it got down to under 0 overnight!
I have slliced and cut my avocados and frozen them separarely on a parchment lined baking sheet, then store them in a ziploc bag in freezer. They turn out fine.
@@OurSmallFootprint I use the frozen ones in chicken tortilla soup, white chicken chili, guatemalan chicken stew. Even regular chicken noodle or other light broth soups. They would probably make good guacamole since it wouldnt matter if they were mushy.
waconnect.org.au seems to list a bunch of places that do food hampers, you'd have to see what is close to you and see if they are eligible for all or if you have to fit a criteria, we are lucky here there are quite a few that you don't have to fit a criteria to access, you just have to be willing to participate!

What do you do with the eggshells? I know some grind them up and feed them back to the chickens. Avocoda mayo is all I can think of. You can freeze them as well
Most of our egg shells just end up in the compost to be honest, we do dry some out and crush them for the garden/chooks, but the feed we buy our chooks has calcium grit in it already, so its not necessary. We might change their feed for a bit so we can ferment it and if we do that we'll need to offer grit separately so we'll have to make sure to do that! :D
I'm seeing that suggested as well, I think I have enough to do a few experiments, some vacuum sealed with nothing, some whole, some with lemon juice and salt etc!
They're in season here atm, so fairly inexpensive, but still grateful! you can use lime water to submerge fresh eggs that haven't had the bloom washed off them and they last for a long time, the consistency of them is a bit thinner than fresh, but perfectly serviceable for cooking!
Hehe, we have a mix, we got some old girls when we first moved and have bred from them and other rescues over the years, so ours are all a blend, we do get some blue, green, cream and brown eggs, which is lovely!
Yes, we mainly only use them for eggs, we were culling the roosters and using them for soup but we just don't have a great process going for processing chickens as yet, maybe in the future :D
I was watching Trip in a Van, they did the Gibb River Road in WA. Justin went on a hunting trip with a local guide and they got a brush turkey, I'd never seen anything like it before. The guide said to pluck it immediately, the longer it's left the harder it'd be. Some other utube homesteaders use a funnel to put the chooks in head first, cut the throat and let the blood drain out before plucking. As a child in 1960s Melbourne, my Italian neighbours would chop the head off a chook every Sunday morning. All the kids would be there to see the headless chook run round the yard, we thought it was hysterical! They used an axe 🪓.

If you mash the avocados up, portion them, they freeze beautifully. I would suggest adding lime and salt to stop them from browning.

I freeze avocado's when you thaw them the halves are a bit different but they work great mashed. They don't turn brown either.

Not tried but I hear you can store avacado in their skin submerged in water, it suspends their decay and keeps much longer

I would have thought it would go brown, maybe if its vacuum sealed it wouldn't, because its the oxygen that oxidises it I suppose!
Hi Nyssa. Just wondering what I should search to find hampers in my area? I searched food hampers and got like gift baskets and stuff.
Food pantry/truck is a common one, or the names I know of are a4 community care, lighthouse, loaves and fishes and food bank

Hehe, we have a mix, we got some old girls when we first moved and have bred from them and other rescues over the years, so ours are all a blend, we do get some blue, green, cream and brown eggs, which is lovely!
Do you only use the hens for eggs? I noticed you buy chicken during your grocery shopping.
Yes, we mainly only use them for eggs, we were culling the roosters and using them for soup but we just don't have a great process going for processing chickens as yet, maybe in the future :D
I was watching Trip in a Van, they did the Gibb River Road in WA. Justin went on a hunting trip with a local guide and they got a brush turkey, I'd never seen anything like it before. The guide said to pluck it immediately, the longer it's left the harder it'd be. Some other utube homesteaders use a funnel to put the chooks in head first, cut the throat and let the blood drain out before plucking. As a child in 1960s Melbourne, my Italian neighbours would chop the head off a chook every Sunday morning. All the kids would be there to see the headless chook run round the yard, we thought it was hysterical! They used an axe 🪓.
Yikes. My mom grew up on a farm and knew how to do that. I joke if I had to kill something, I would quickly become vegetarian.
“Her Ordinary Mum” on TH-cam freezes avo whole and says they are just as good when defrosted. I’m not a fan of avo don’t eat it myself.
