    Our pantries in the US don't usually charge, but the quality is far inferior from what I've seen on your hauls. The hampers with fresh produce are amazing. What a great program! I think many would go to one here if they were charged something, even nominally. It's hard for many to get over the pride of a 'handout' but your hampers aren't framed that way and I love that. I love your videos, thanks for sharing!

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, a couple of American people have said the same, that they'd prefer to pay 'something' rather than get it for free. I'm sure there are some free ones around as well, but we've never been quite so badly off that I've hunted one down, these ones definitely help us extend our grocery shopping which allows us to spend less and we do very well for what we buy, but we can manage without them if need be!

    I haven't used that meatless mince but I am a vegetarian, if u grind up some pecans and mix with the 'meat' I use this to make my lasagna its so good, I add spinach, garlic, salt and pepper and passata to the 'mince part

    I haven't seen the fish fillets like that but your hampers can be similar to ours. The Pantry in one town bear me is $40 with a bigger selection of dry items and heaps of breads but very limited meat and veg, they open every morning on week days . Grace Hamper is in another town and it's limited in dry items and bread but has a big meat and fridge bag and some veg is fill a bag all for $40 as well but it's only open one morning a week. Either are so worth the money and if like us ,you have dietary needs they have been happy to shuffle some items for gf/df alternatives if they have them. Thank you for sharing lovely 💚

    Hey Nyssa I hope you're having a lovely day, pity about not getting the veggie boxes, I think this year with all the rain we are going to see shortages and probably more price rises, I caught up with a neighbour friend yesterday who has five children two of her own and three teenage foster children four of the kids have autism and her daughter is gluten free, she told me yesterday her weekly grocery bill is 700 dollars, I nearly fell off my chair. Unfortunately she is stuck for time, her and her hubby are both principles for country primary schools and all the kids have activities after school so no time to scratch themselves. 🙄

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes! If I didn't have the 'time' to put into doing the shopping the way I do and preparing all the food and preserving, my grocery bill would be huge! I am extremely lucky that I have the ability to do what I do to still eat so well whilst also keeping the bills down!

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have a trailer, there is a local skip bin about 10 mins away we are allowed to dump rubbish into, we try very hard to use all cardboard/paper products in the garden and compost etc, we don't throw food waste into the bin, it all gets to the animals or compost, but there is still just so much rubbish in every day life :S. So we bag it up and put it in the trailer and Darryl takes the trailer to the skip bins on a regular basis!

    I'm so glad to see that you have a food pantry and and that you have to PAY something for it. Here in the US they are free and everyone takes advantage of them, the people that have alot of money go and take up all the food and the disabled people like myself do without because it's all gone. My children do without. I think the US should adopt the policy of your country and charge for hampers at food pantries and have to show proof of income for free hampers and then it would be fair. Love and Blessings ❤️ 🦋

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have heard that a lot from some of the food pantry users in teh US that they'd prefer a paid system. It seems to work here, everyone can access it, you don't have to be on pensions etc but you all pay the same, and you can purchase more than one if you want!

    • @finnsfrolic4328
      @finnsfrolic4328 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am sorry to hear of your experience at your food pantry. The pantries in our community (USA-Virginia- small town) do have income restrictions. Depending on whether or not they take government subsidies is how income level is determined.
      I am blessed to be able to volunteer here at 2 of the food pantries . Both are run by churches and take some government subsidies. If it is a person's first time and income is too high, we still make sure they get food, because bills happen! After that, here they do have to follow low income guidelines. Our pantries have never yet run out of food. They have run out of certain things that had low stock or high demand, such as fresh fruit or veg, eggs. Our local Food Lion and Walmart donate lots of meat and breads.
      I have heard of pantries who do charge between $10 & 50. Occasionally, we have individuals or businesses who gave too much supply. One was giving away pick your own greens. A local farmer had received several pallets of potatoes which had been improperly stored and some frozen. He gave away many hundreds of pounds of perfectly good potatoes.
      If able, please dial 211, toll free. In the USA, the number should reach community service representatives in your community.
      Kind Regards, Fellow Reader
