For cryin' out loud, Karina! Is there any sewing technique you have NOT mastered? Your teaching style and in-depth explanations are beyond compare. You are my go to "how to" source. Thank you for your hard work and dedication.
Karina, really appreciate these master classes and thank you for doing them. You are developing quite a library of work. The filming and instruction is high quality. Easy to watch and understand. Just love this sewing channel🇨🇦🥰
What a fantastic job you have done in making this tutorial for us. So much time and effort! Thanks. It will be super exciting to see you hit 50K subscribers!
Karina, of all the sewing channels I watch, I always seem to keep coming back to yours the most. Your instructions are clear, educational and easy to follow. Once again, thank you and keep filming.
Although your methods 2 and 3 are my favorites, I finish them a little differently. After the waistband has been sewn on to the pants, I topstitch the back portion only. After the elastic has been inserted and secured at the back, then I topstitch to finish the front waistband. Thank you for all your very informative videos. I recommend you to all my sewing friends.
I have learned so much from your excellent videos. Thank you for the time and care you invest to share your knowledge. You are an inspiration and the best teacher.
Hi Karina! I just made a flat front with a back elasticated waistband and it came out horrible. This I KNOW will be a great tutorial I'm going to watch!
You did a wonderful job explaining each method! So comprehensive, a really good reference for us going forward. I have been waiting for LN to release the Tinley pattern, so thank you in advance for the tutorial! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Excellent master class. I will definitely be referring back to it on a regular basis. I appreciate the detail and filming of all the methods. I've sewn method #1 and found it difficult to create a smooth transition at the side seams because of the bulkiness. I look forward to all of your videos and tutorials and frequently reference them. Your makes provide a lot of inspiration.
Your video about V-neck bands popped up in my feed and it is wonderful. So I subscribed. Now I see SO many of your videos about things I need to learn. Thank you for teaching and making these videos.
Karina, bless your 💜💜💜! That switcheroo on putting wrong and right sides together just about did me in, but after rewinding, unpicking and resewing, I got it and it's the best waistband I've ever done, even though I had to piece the inside facing together. 😂 Thank you for all you do for the sewing community!
Thank you so much for simplifying the various waistband options. I just finished sewing my first pair of Poppy Pants by Sinclair Patterns, and your method 2 would have been so much easier. I learn so much from your videos.
You Master Class video are such a great resource. It's so helpful to have this type sewing techniques content. Karina, I appreciate the time and effort you take to create these videos. I refer to them often. Thanks for this waistband techniques video.
Just discoverd this one of yours for waistbands. No 2 is going to be the preferred one for me from now on. So much easier than how I have been shown to do it in the past. Can I also add that since watching you I have become a fan of basting. So much better than pins in some cases as more flexible i.e. collars. My last collar went in so much easier. Thank you!
I have only sewn two pants patterns both recently. The Cashmerette Calder pants and am just finishing up the Magda pants. Each use the flat front and elastic back waist. Your instructions are so practical and inciteful. Thanks sew much 😊
Your video is easy to follow and very detailed. I'm just getting back into sewing and bought the Tinley shorts pattern. This video really helped me get the project finished and gave other options to try in the future.
Great video. I have used that first method and agree there is too much bulk. I haven't used the yoga waistband idea, something to try out. Thanks for all your hard work!
Making channels also makes it easy to change the elastic later because you don’t have to unpick and resew top stitching through elastic (if, say, the elastic wears out).
I’ve been following you for a while and love your detailed descriptions of sewing techniques! Always super helpful! Question: for the half yoga back waistband how do you calculate the amount of stretch fabric you need? Love your channel!!
Thank you so much for your time and knowledge! Did I miss where you mentioned the brand and/or where to find that fantastic elastic that does not curl easy in the video.
When you sewed the contour waistband in option #5, how did you stretch just the knit fabric on top without also stretching out the bottom layer of fabric on the bottom? It didn't look like you were pulling on either layer, but you got them to match up perfectly! I have not figured out how to sew with stretch very well yet.
This is just the tutorial I need! Loved the half yoga waistband! So that is measured as half my waist measurement less 1.5 inches, just as if I had used elastic in a back waistband?
Karina, thank you this was wonderful! My question is to use this waistband for a skirt does the length of waist band need to be the same as the hip measurement in order to pull up over the hips?
Wonderful video - thank you! Just a question on the yoga waistband (last technique): how do you calculate the length of the back waistband if you're substituting that technique for a waistband that was supposed to have elastic through it? The front is 1 to 1, but the back has to have less than the original pattern called for, if I'm interpreting this correctly. Also, what kind of fabric is good for that yoga waistband - I think I heard 10% spandex, but I've never seen that amount in any of the fabrics I've shopped for. Is it some kind of athletic (or swim?) specialty fabric? Thank you again for a great video!
I love the idea of an elasticated back waistband so this video will really help me. Do you think this technique would work with the Love Notions Duet trousers in a woven fabric if I didn't put in the back darts? I know you say it won't work with just any pattern.
Karina what is the ratio you use (for the flat front/yoga back) of the measurement of the woven fabric in the back of the garment, to the knit half yoga back waistband? 80-85% of the measurement of the back woven fabric?
I explained it in the video. Measure your waist. Measure the flat front. See what the difference is. Take that measurement and take away 1-2” for the elastic in the back :)
Karina, I see most of your pattern pieces are serged. So do you serge them before you start pinning themtogether or do you serge after? Because it looks like it is serged before. I am just getting ready to pull my serger out of the closet after 2 years of being in there and I don't even know where to begin with it. Thank you.
If I plan to press the seams open flat, I serge before sewing the seam. If the seam allowance will be together, I sew first and then serge. It’s just what I do but it’s not a rule :)

You are a genius with the neck and sleeve bindings now you are a genius with the the waistbands too . Thank you so much .
You are so welcome!
Well you covered everything anyone would need to know about waistbands. Excellent video. Thank you 🙂
Glad it was helpful!
Karina--another great instructional video. I learn something new from every one of your videos and I've been sewing 55 years. Thank you!

The #2 application is brilliant. I love how smooth the elastic lies inside at the side seams.
Love, love, love this video!! Thank you so much, Karina!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Karina! I just made a flat front with a back elasticated waistband and it came out horrible. This I KNOW will be a great tutorial I'm going to watch!
Thanks for showing a novice like me the techniques available. Great job.
Great tutorial! Thank you for sharing. I am definitely trying the second method of sewing the entire waistband on . Thank you!!
Thank you, Karina! I always put elastic in the back of my Levi's. They relax then I have trouble keeping them up!

Instead of hand basting I like to use Wonder double sided tape. It doesn’t gum up your needle and washes away.
Thanks for this! Very helpful!
I can’t find that notion to buy here so it’s not an option for me. I do love the accuracy of the needle and thread and it has not let me down yet :)

A master class indeed! Great work! This is one for the ages ❣

Thank you ! .. I was wondering about creating a channel casing for the elastic, as I have lot of nice quality 1/2 elastic

What,a great tutorial ❤
Great video. Very helpful! Can I use these same techniques but only use a quarter of elastic in the center back of the waistband?
Great info as usual Karina!!!
This is just the tutorial I need! Loved the half yoga waistband! So that is measured as half my waist measurement less 1.5 inches, just as if I had used elastic in a back waistband?
Where do you find your no roll elastic for the waste and? How wide is it?
Karina, thank you this was wonderful! My question is to use this waistband for a skirt does the length of waist band need to be the same as the hip measurement in order to pull up over the hips?
Yes, correct
Wonderful video - thank you! A super tutorial as always - thank you 😊
Is it possible to adapt a regular elasticated waistband to a flat front, elasticated back?
Not really because with a regular one there is extra ease drafter evenly between the front and back.
Karina, are you using fusible stay tape at the top of the waistband?
At the top of the waist. Yes. Sometimes I do and if not, I stay stitch :)
I love the idea of an elasticated back waistband so this video will really help me. Do you think this technique would work with the Love Notions Duet trousers in a woven fabric if I didn't put in the back darts? I know you say it won't work with just any pattern.
No it won’t work because not sewing the darts will not give you the ease you need to pull them over the hips.
@@LiftingPinsandNeedles Thank you Karina. I was afraid you'd say that but thought I'd ask your expert opinon just in case.

How do know how much spandex knit to cut for the back yoga waistband for the Tinley
1/2” of waist measurement minus 2”
@@LiftingPinsandNeedles thanks so much
Did I miss how you calculated the size of the back yoga waistband in method #5?
The same as the length I’d use for the elastic. I showed that in detail and it’s the same for the knit back :)

Number 2. But the summer Caye waistband doesn’t have seams on the sides, so it makes it even easier :)

How does one know how much to gather up the back waist band ?
…on the 3/8” elastic option
There’s a chart in the pattern with a suggestion for the length for each size.
Thank you do much for this video. I have been looking for a pattern like this can anyone out there recommend one?
I like the Poppy pants from Sinclair patterns and the Tinley shorts from Love Notions :)
