Getting Dragon Warrior for free by subscribing to however many years of Nintendo Power was a highlight of my childhood and kickstarted my love of rpg’s
Two years. You had to subscribe for two years. That special mini-strategy guide you got was slick too! It was almost like Christmas every month when the new issue of NP came in. NP still did cool stuff all the way into the 2000s. The special edition gold copies of Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask were available only to NP subscribers. They're both worth a lot now and I wish I hadn't forgotten to grab my old games when I helped my parents move out of their big empty nest.
I rented my 1st copy. I was intrigued by the commercial I see everyday of Dragon warrior. I was in loved with RPG from that day on. I can’t remembered how I got my own copy. I think I traded or bought from one of my friends.
I did the same. I had previously played RPGs on home micros - but this was my first RPG on the NES. I played it all the way through because that's what you did with NES games as a kid, but it didn't click with me as super enjoyable... it was way to gridy.
For LJN it's a masterpiece. It's actually playable. I can name a handful of NES games that are worse than anything LJN but no more than that. Franchise games usually suck anyway. LJN just made them suck worse.
I love that game, played it so much as a kid. I don't get it. But I still play it today. Something is just fun when you get the sub. Jaws is such a pain to kill when you are on the boat! Never could beat it as a kid. Only because of retroarch as an adult was I able to finally finish it. Gotta love rewind!!
@@AngryCalvinAs far as non suck LJN franchise games go, Spider-Man Maximum Carnage on SNES was one of the better ones they did. Typical beat em up without the "typical LJN style."
Great video, thanks for featuring Hydlide, Dragon Warrior, Gyruss and Lode Runner... Those were part of my childhood.. also you are correct that Gyruss still holds well today, as my 5 years old enjoys it so much that he always asks me to play it... Great video. NES Lode Runner is a fun, early 80s arcade style game. It's is the kind of thing the Famicom was originally designed for before extra chips were added in the cartridges to boost the console's capabilities in later years.

I borrowed Lode Runner from a school friend back in the day, as I loved it on my PC back in the day. But I found the scrolling screen interfered with strategy and keeping track of enemies and the holes you created
Star Tropics is one cool Adventure/RPG game for the nes played and beat once. And wife loves that game to but not more than Super Mario Brothers 1, 2, and 3.
I can still get good games locally - I got Final Fantasy for like $40 CAD. Zoda's Revenge was also available for $25 (with manual) and I got a few simple games (Cobra Triangle, Marble Madness, Pipe Dream) for like $7 each.
@@Fortefyre FF took me 6-7 weeks so far to play - I'm almost in a condition where I can fight the final boss. My kid knows about damage points vs HP and quickly tells me to cast FAST or CUR3 lol.
So when I first played FF, it was on the Iphone, it was the Dawn of Souls version or something like that, I was stationed in Korea. That version was obviously well-updated for quality of life improvements. I beat it on the NES as an adult, it was the first RPG I streamed on Twitch, and I loved it just as much.

I thought u were going to bring up Micro Machines. Got it at a yard sale for 3 bucks, loved it!!!You drive as a car, truck, helicopter, boat, tank, etc. The levels are an outdoor garden, tub (boat), billiard table, they were really creative! I really wanted to play the remake but didn't have a Wii, lol. Oh I definitely subbed... wanna be the one of the "firsts" to say I was here before u got to a million 😁
Idea for a video: 10 NES Games with Great Soundtracks. Suggestion to make the list: Legacy of the Wizard. Thanks for these vids, Forte, they're the best!
That's going to require more than one video part. Even NES games I don't like from a gameplay standpoint can potentially have great songs. Mega Man (even 6, which has a nice soundtrack for the final NES installement), Castlevania, and Mario are major shoe-ins. Heck, Castlevania 2 I think has better sounding music on NES than Famicom. Kirby's music is usually relaxing, but it also can get intense when need be. Both Gradius and their spin-off deserve major credit. Original Metroid may have become janky in the gameplay and sprites depertment. However, the soundtrack remains as being really good. Ironically, the person who composed the music wanted it to sound more like movie music than the typical gaming music from back then. Just the main theme of the entire Zelda series alone has helped to cement the soundtracks in legend. Even Link's Adventure has some really good music. Battletoads was composed by the same person responsible for the Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2 soundtracks on the SNES. Dragon Quest 3's soundtrack even in NES form remains as one of the greatest RPG soundtracks. Earthbound Beginnings is hard to recommend (the original Japanese version is even worse), but the soundtrack remains nice to this day; with specific songs remaining iconic in the sequels or Super Smash Bros. Megami Tensei 1 and 2 are quite dated on NES (thankfully they have a SNES remake), but their soundtracks still provides that sense of intensity and warpness the series is known for. All three NES Ninja Gaiden games have rather solid work with the music.
@@Fortefyre You should check out the soundtracks for Earthbound Beginnings, Megami Tensei 1, and Megami Tensei 2. While all three are hard to recommend as games these days (especially the original Japanese version of Earthbound Beginnings), they have some rather good music.
@@Fortefyre True, it did add tracks that were not in the arcade game, but what jumps out at me the most is the boss fights, which are non-existent in the arcade game. It took gameplay that was already solid to begin with and (pardon the pun) added worlds to it. The arcade game does hold a special place for me, though, because the first place I got to play it on an original cabinet was at Flipper McCoy’s at Virginia Beach, and I think at least one of my nephews was watching when I finally reached Earth. That was my biggest conquest while we were there.
The original Metal Gear may be a bad port, but I always felt like it was an overlooked NES game. It's not perfect by any means but I have figured out that I can have a great time with it. You're right. Just cause AVGN gave it a comedic bad review doesn't mean it's a bad NES game. Just found your channel and I’m really enjoying it. You got a sub from me. Great list, can vouch for Kings of the beach and Gyruss. Both of them are fantastic games. Hydlide not so much but I have gotten far in it but lost interest. Great video my friend
Better off emulating or getting a flash cart nowadays. $70 for a 30 year old 25 minute long game that was mass produced is just too much. People find an old game and they think they found a gold nugget. It's ridiculous.
Yeah, that's what irritates me. At some point in the last 10 years, people thought "hey, I can become a venture capitalist by scalping electronics and inflating their market value to make profit" and in most cases it just makes them look like an idiot. It still happens to this day.
Åh! Din lilla smickrare där! Not to brag.. But I was the first ever on this platform to make a video about Intellivision. I am a true pioneer! Haha.@@Fortefyre
Glad to see some love for JAWS on the NES. Yes, I know it was LJN. Yes, I know the movie "Jaws: The Revenge," the basis of the game, was shitty. But this was fun to play! I still break it out every now and then.
Personally, I love the JAWS game. I also love "JAWS: The Revenge" unironically, so maybe that factors in. But I'm glad you gave the game a fair shake. (As a note, I do not watch AVGN, primarily due to the fact that I can't stand excessive swearing, and as such have never been influenced by his videos, but it's sad to hear that some people will rag on a game they have never played just because of something he said.)
I do swear, but it's not like...overbearing like AVGN, I think we all love him. I'm a veteran so it's REALLY hard to separate the bad language, but I do try to minimize it lol.
What I suggest is to be willing to pay more money. I support Dragon Warrior and Solar Jetman, but neither one of these games is likely to be all that enjoyable to a brand new NES player. The rest of the games on this list are not even worth playing at all. While Super Mario Bros. 3 is far from my favorite NES game, I would recommend that a new NES player try that. New players tend to love it. It will cost more than $15, but not way too much more.
@@Fortefyre I understand. It seems to me that I see a lot of these lists of NES games that are very cheap. But, the simple fact is, that you can't get good NES games for that cheap. I would look to see how much it costs to buy a copy of Metroid or Super Mario Bros. and place that as the standard price of what is a really fun game for a relatively cheap price. Plus I just looked them up, and you can get a copy of Super Mario Bros. or Metroid for about 15 to 25 dollars. So I would wonder why those games aren't on your list. They are hundreds of times more fun than the games here. I'm sorry to say.
Got Kings of the Beach for $5 at ShopKo when the 16-bit era started to really hit. We played the crap out it! Also got Magic Johnsons Fast Break for $5 and it was an abomination like most sports games. Even worse than NBA2k. Ouch! The Gyruss port looks really good actually. I collect arcade games/ports. Have around 300 of them if not more. Gyruss just happens to possibly be the most prominent game I don't have in my collection. At least it's way up there. Great to know it's a cheaper title. In this regard a good thanks for the video.
Jaws is actually not half that bad I played the game several times and if someone want to see LJN best game in my opinion try Alien 3 on SNES thank me later you will not be disappointed.
Can't believe people still buy nes games. I have every nes game ever made including English translations and it cost me $0. Download roms/emulator. I also have every snes and genesis game !
Nearly every TH-camr in existence has more non-subscribers watching videos than subscribers. Especially since very often people will be watching videos while not logged in.
Konami did just fine. Plenty cool AF NES games, i don`t think letting future succesful programmers go was a bad desicion and Kojima is overrated AF cause gamers need someone to worship.
@@Fortefyrewhen I had a regular Nintendo, games weren't that expensive going into the 2000s. I don't have that nes or games anymore but seeing the prices for the games now are just sad. Games you could get all day well under 20 and 15 dollars are now 60 dollars. 60 dollars is the cost of a switch game.
Hylide, grrrr. I would pay someone 3 dollars to not have to hear that 20 second loop music that is a rip of Indiana Jones. You time is better spent sampling used chewing gum from under school desks. Emulation is the best option for cheap if you value your time, and sanity.
@@Fortefyre I spent my hard earned money from my allowance on hylide , it was on clearance for about 25 dollars at kay bee toys. Got home, ripped it open popped it in, and I died a little inside knowing I just wasted my money and I knew they didn't accept returns on open games. My dad noticed I was not playing my new game and sad, when I told him about it, he brought me to the store and let me choose a game of similar price. We left the store with imaginations of daggers and winged boots (faxanadu). From that time on I made it a point to rent a game before committing to a purchase. God did I ever love faxanadu.

Kojima wasn't fired from Konami. He was forced to retire from Konami Kojima is very overrated. People like you put him on this pedestal when his last bunch of games have been a mess or suck. Death Stranding = Sucks. Baby walking mail simulator Phantom Pain = Unfinished mess worst MG period. Peacewalker = Meh at best. Didn't like the toning down of the series either. Went from M to T rating MGS 4 = trash. Turned Metal Gear into a shooter basically. Game is 98% cutscene anyway

Just found your channel and I’m really enjoying it. You got a sub from me. Great list, can vouch for Kings of the beach and Gyruss. Both of them are fantastic games. Hydlide not so much but I have gotten far in it but lost interest. Great video my friend
Give Hydlide a shake with a walkthrough! Set your objectives, and just power through it. :)
I own gyruss and I went out of my way to get it. Konami could do no wrong back then
Big facts!
That Simpson's game about the aliens I thought was really good
Bart vs. The Aliens? Might have to check it out!
@@Fortefyre yep that's it. Fair warning, a very difficult game
I heard! But I'll try it anyway one day!
Upvote for Hydlide, I loved that game.
I do too!
Did you know that Nintendo Power gave away copies of Dragon Warrior free just for subscribing to the magazine? That's how I got my copy.
I learned that from another comment! That's so awesome!
I love my self some Solar Jetman!
Nice username!
Well thank you! I guess that I can not hide what one off my absolute favorite consoles are from you now. Haha. Greetings from Sweden! @@Fortefyre
Trevligt att träffas! I love my Intellivision!
Åh! Din lilla smickrare där! Not to brag.. But I was the first ever on this platform to make a video about Intellivision. I am a true pioneer! Haha.@@Fortefyre
I'm in the presence of royalty then! :P
Gyruss is a great game. And I prefer the NES version over the arcade.
Oh absolutely!
I guess you could say Jaws was the original Amity(vile)Horror!!!! ……. I’ll see myself out
I'll allow it.
I understand that, but I can't suggest a game I haven't played myself. Lol.
So the challenge was "$15 or under", so I wanted to showcase simple games under the threshold that fit the bill.
You bet! Thank you!
The best basketball game on NES is Tecmo NBA Basketball. For an arcade style.. maybe Arch Rivals. And holy crap, that's a ton of arcade ports.
New sub. Thank you for working to keep the ratio correct. I hate stretched graphics.!
Me too! Sometimes it's tough to keep the ratio right when I stream, it bounces between different resolutions for different systems, but I try.
kings of the beach and gyruss yes!!
Such good games!
Jaws is actually not half that bad I played the game several times and if someone want to see LJN best game in my opinion try Alien 3 on SNES thank me later you will not be disappointed.
Looking forward to it!
@@Fortefyre Let me know when you tried it or if you going to at least :) looking forward to your opinion.
@@Blueniter You'll be the first to know!
I had solar jet man it was a ok game
I liked it!
I've done a top 15 best NES video before . Be sure to check it out to here my thoughts on what r some of the best games on NES. From me!!!
I'll check it out!
You know how it sucks giving a “thumbs up” when it takes your count off an even 400? I hope you appreciate my sacrifice 🤪
Your sacrifice will not be forgotten!
Good video pal
Thanks! Thank YOU for maintaining an excellent Facebook group! Lmao.
Can't believe people still buy nes games. I have every nes game ever made including English translations and it cost me $0. Download roms/emulator. I also have every snes and genesis game !
Its just my shtick lol.
solar jetman rocks
Sure does!
I really like this 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you!
Dejavu was a great game
So good!
I put a gerbil in a microwave for some reason on the NES
Lmfao
I love Jaws!
Me too!
Nearly every TH-camr in existence has more non-subscribers watching videos than subscribers. Especially since very often people will be watching videos while not logged in.
I know, but it's still nice to try.
Konami did just fine. Plenty cool AF NES games, i don`t think letting future succesful programmers go was a bad desicion and Kojima is overrated AF cause gamers need someone to worship.
I think that when you think of "developers that we remember" Kojima is a name that sticks out.
*grabs marker...labels copy of Hydlide "Soup Time"*
As you should!
Good video!!!
Thanks!
Now make a video of the Top 10 NES games your viewers should send you 💵💵🤑🤑
Haha if only.
I'm glad I don't have to sell my kidney to play these games...
Emulation is the BEST!
This is true. It's a product of horrible market inflation.
Hydlide... I will give you money to take it away
It's great! But I'll take the money lmao
Hylide, grrrr. I would pay someone 3 dollars to not have to hear that 20 second loop music that is a rip of Indiana Jones. You time is better spent sampling used chewing gum from under school desks. Emulation is the best option for cheap if you value your time, and sanity.
Facts lol.
Well I'm glad you had a life lesson out of it! Lmao
Jeopardy and Double Dare are not puzzle games
Trivia in any capacity is a form of mental puzzles. Cope harder.

One of the worst list I’ve ever seen
I'm sorry that you feel that way. What would you add to the list?
Went on eBay immediately after two of your videos and bought RoadBlasters and Gyruss. Two that were never on my radar and I have over 60 cartridges. Thank you. Liked and subscribed👌🏼
That's awesome! I hope I can inspire you to check out OTHER libraries as well:)
I have a pretty substantial snes and genesis collection as well, each with their own crt in my basement. Still a kid inside I guess😋
I am jealous!
Hydlide is trash.
B is too high
More like triple Z quality.
To you maybe!
Kojima wasn't fired from Konami. He was forced to retire from Konami
Kojima is very overrated. People like you put him on this pedestal when his last bunch of games have been a mess or suck.
Death Stranding = Sucks. Baby walking mail simulator
Phantom Pain = Unfinished mess worst MG period.
Peacewalker = Meh at best. Didn't like the toning down of the series either. Went from M to T rating
MGS 4 = trash. Turned Metal Gear into a shooter basically. Game is 98% cutscene anyway
Any other developers that strike your fancy? (without looking it up)
Metal Gear Survive and Snake's Revenge are the worst Metal Gear games.
Also, Peacewalker is better than Portable Ops.
