OMG I thought I was the only one. I thought Mallow was a tadpole too originally. I was also young and thought that's how they drew tadpoles. The original game also had minor character interactions that hinted he was not and went over my head (if I remember correctly). But of course the reveal was a plot twist for me as well.

I think it does hold up as a remake. You can definitely feel how the game is antiquated in some ways (text boxes are completely silent, some action commands can feel a little less kinetic wirh their timing). But the charm and unique feeling of the game shows the passion behind the original project and how well it held up today. A bit of a shame about the occasional overworld stuttering but I can live with that, having this game rereleased with this level of effort is insane.

@@catsforcomms1952that’s kind of all it needed to be.
There was nothing fundamentally wrong with the game to begin with from a game or story standpoint, visually it was charming but I think most will enjoy the realtime visuals more than the pre rendered sprites. I’m glad they kept the overall aesthetic pretty true to the original, it looks very much like how I remember it.

Great analysis, I love this game. It’s so fun and cool. I never played the original Super Mario RPG since I grew up with the Gamecube as a kid but being a player of Paper Mario games I have felt right at home playing this Super Mario RPG remake. It has the same combat system and unique storytelling.

  • @steamboatbill4

When we played it as kids, geno was this cool puppet come to life super hero character. I think it was always more that than it was his performance in the game.

  • @PrinceMallow
    @PrinceMallow 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Regarding Geno and his personality, he still has one. But Geno is just a lot more introverted compared to most the characters in the game which doesn't make it stand out as much next to characters like Mallow, Booster, and Bowser. But he does have a few fun quirks like how he's a bit awkward and how he gets irritated when people misname the Star Road. He also does seem upset knowing the time will soon come for him to leave his new friends.
As for Geno for Smash, it was never really about Geno specifically per say but more to get SMRPG representation as a whole into Smash Bros. Geno's cool design and moveset potential made him an easy poster boy to use for the idea, along with Sakurai's expressed interest in adding the character.

Is it simple? Yes. Can it be easy? Also yes. But is it charming? 100% YES!!!
I first played this game on the SNES classic around 2018-2019 and I fell in love with it. It easy to pick up and satisfying to master. The dialogue, characters, environments, and music are all so charming. The story is simple, but it sets out on what it’s supposed to be: a Mario RPG, and it succeeds. I’ve always had a blast playing the original, so when the remake got announced, I was freaking out!
And let me tell you, it absolutely lived up to my expectations! It is wonderfully remade, with the changes feeling natural. The redone music is so fun to listen to, the new graphics are amazingly well made, the charming stuff is still as charming as ever, the addition of Triple Moves and Ally Buffs make it so that you are always experimenting with your lineup.
I do understand why some people would think this game is easier than the original, but that doesn’t really bother me, since the game was always easy. The shockwaves only happen when you get a PERFECT timed hit, leading me to try and master them, since normal battles in the original would take a while, but here, I can just get one or two perfect timed hits and it’s over. Would I have liked a hard mode? Yes, but I love what we got anyway.
In the end, this is an amazing example on how to remake a game. Take something that’s familiar and lovingly recreate it with changes that enhance the experience. I would totally recommend this to anyone, whether they’re an RPG veteran, or are just starting out, if nothing else but how charming it is.
(Edit: I almost forgot about the post game boss rematches! Man, they are tough! Belome, Bundt, and Jinx took some time while Punchinello, Booster and Johnny took me multiple tries, and Culex… is special. Won’t go into detail here, but man that fight was amazing!)

I just beat the game last night. While I've never "loved" the game as much as some people do, I've always found it enjoyable. I'm glad to say it's very faithful to the original. I still mostly felt like I was playing an SNES game, just with better visuals.
While I don't mind the splash damage and swapping out party members in battle, I do think those features should only be part of the breezy mode. They could always add a harder mode down the line where enemies do more damage and have more hp.
I know I'm dreaming here, but I would love if the original DKC games could get similar treatment.

Great remake!, But I can't help but feel some of the charm was lost, being able to switch partners during battle deffenly numbs down the difficulty. It's deffenly not as challenging as I remember on the snes. I would say it's because I'm older now, but I recently played the original twice in the past few years, once on the wii u & also again on the snes mini classic & it still was still just as challenging at certain parts... I've yet to play the post game stuff so hopefully it will prove to be a great challenge for us veterans...

I have long been a fan of Mario RPG and I rejoiced when the remake was announced. But I just can't do anymore games dumbed down and made hyper easy. They need to include a Hard Mode, and maybe en Expert Mode since I dont trust that hard would be a challenge at all still. Splash damage was a neat addition, had they rebalanced the enemies for it; let alone roster rotation and the new special moves. I dont want or need the game to be Darksouls, I just have to have a challenge to overcome rather than what's essentially press A simulators. Its the same reason I sat down Sea of Stars despite its quality, because they just made it so easy the fantastic cooking mechanic was practically unnecessary. Dont get rid of easy mode, just make an adult mode for the adults who still appreciate these games.

Turn-based RPGs aren't my cup of tea at all, so the only reason I would pick of one up is if it's either super charming or has really great music. Luckily, Super Mario RPG delivers on both fronts. I really like that it doesn't overstay its welcome with its 15 hours playtime, and doesn't get tedious with its difficulty (though I agree that they should have added a Hard mode).

I like both, but the original has more charm. The new one changed names, dialogue, attack names and more, making certain things more dull. The font used in the original gave characters more personality. The way they exaggerated question marks and exclamation points in dialogue in the original gave characters more life. Also, the game was already easy but they made normal mode even easier in the new one and added an easy mode. Plus, it's easier to do timed hits in the original than it is in the new one. Timed hits feel so off in the remake but that's ok. I can just relearn everything.

You talk as if the original wasn't a ridiculously easy game intended for children to begin with. Handicapping yourself by benching Peach and not using equipment isn't gonna make the game any harder if you know how to time attacks and use items, you're just making each fight waste more of your time.
If you've already played the original to death, I'd say those folks would come to appreciate things like splash damage and the super moves to blow past tedious mobs of scrub enemies on replays rather than attacking them one at a time. Easy games have their place - if you want a difficult RPG you are looking in the wrong one.

As someone who hasnt played the original, I enjoyed it immensely. I did play Mario ans Luigi Superstar Saga which is sort of its spiritual successor, so theres a little bias there, but thats my only other experience with Mario RPG before now.
      Things to note:
If you like kingdom hearts, or any other game yoko shimomura has composed for, youll probably like this. The music alone is almost worth the 60 bucks
If you like RPGs but wish they were simplier or less tedious. You'll like this.
If you like Mario or any Mario character and specifically enjoy games that focus a lot on story/characterization elements. You'll like this.
Also compared to super mario 64, there hasn't been a proper remake of that game so the visuals are severely outdated. Not a problem with this game however. Its stylized to look like the original but definitely cleaner and updated for the modern eye.
Finally, I really hesitate to trust people's opinions on "game length" if you speed through games normally you might find this to be too short. But i like to take my time, explore, do little minigames and challenges over and over before i finish the main story. And even after that there are collectibles ans bonus bosses. It wont be as long as final fantasy or elden ring. But thats only a problem if you prefer long games.

This is a remaster not a remake.
A remaster is just a glorified port, done to improve graphics controls &/or quality of life fixes; like making the game more responsive and removing gamebreaking bugs or updated for more accessibility. But a remake is actually innovating, or at least redesigning what was already done, in an attempt to make the original better than the sequel; such as rewriting the story &/or changing core mechanics.

I must be alone in this but this was a game that I didn’t think “needed” a remake. If Nintendo had thrown it up on NSO, that would have been good enough. But hey, that’s me. i also think charging 60 bucks for a game that’s, for the most part, identical to the game from 1996 just is kinda crappy.

Nintendo Life is like the old Nintendo Power magazine magnified by a hundred. It’s akin to one enormous ad: Nintendo can do no wrong!
And this very pedestrian remake makes the point. It’s good, but….sheesh. This is about as unambitious as a remake gets, and the $60 price point is extreme. At least the Mario and Luigi remakes offered new quests revolving around Bowser Jr. There’s absolutely nothing but rehash here. Happy rehash, but still rehash.

People are too harsh on this game not realizing it was the first Mario rpg. The first time Mario had dialogue. It’s supposed to be simple and straightforward forward. No one expected it to have humor or loads of secrets or good music.

As a newcomer, I don't believe it quite matches the hype. It's really just a simple beginner's RPG. A very charming and joyful experience but I've experienced better.
The story was too simplistic for me. The plot moves just straight ahead with no major reveals that turn the course of the story. No twists. No betrayals. The villains are very much one-dimensional evil without much to them beyond the surface. Smithy's name is mentioned repeatedly throughout and yet you only see him at the end. He has no presence as a main antagonist. Mallow is the only character with an arc. I think the Paper Mario series offers better stories by comparison.

I basically said this on their other video and got attacked for it. I’m sure it’s different for people who played the original as a child. I have played a lot of games since the 80s l, including Mario, and don’t really feel the same about most of them today though.

I don't think any of this is wrong, but I sort of view the whole game as, "Really good Improv". The topic, setting, and theme are all cookie cutter, but the writing, characters and humor are all well above the "cookie cutter standard."
It's like the most interesting sugar cookie of all time. No matter if it's the hitting the absolute ceiling of Sugar cookies, it's still the most basic and least ambitious of every type of cookie out there.
I love it for what it does with what it is, but recognize that "What it is" isn't particularly unique or ambitious.

    • @Evilj82

You’re a newcomer but you’re probably over 18 or 20, whereas when the original game was released, the target was 6-16 years old. You’re not the target audience. It’s supposed to be simple and easy. It’s not supposed to have twists or betrayals, the twist was having bowser on your team , that was the first time they did that
You’re comparing to paper Mario which came out after the first Mario rpg , of course the games after are more mature

    • @carrillmunnings525
      @carrillmunnings525 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@Evilj82 Yeah, I understand that the target audience is younger. Not as high as age 16 though. I did say it was a beginner's RPG. It's just that you have veterans claiming the game is "one of the greatest RPGs of all time" and that makes me raise an eyebrow.
But Paper Mario TTYD isn't "mature". It's also for a young audience and it still has a solid twist. What's behind the door turns out to be something much more sinister than just treasure and it culminates in the Shadow Queen.
A lot of classic Final Fantasy games are made for a teen audience and offer amazing twists and emotional moments.
