      I think the cars are still stationary for time trials... least they were when I tried the track in that mode after the patch. So it could be that they always intended for the cars to have a stationary and a moving mode depending on whether it was a time trial or race situation, but that didn't get implemented at first. I did confirm that the cars do move in race mode, so the patch is definitely applied. (50cc race, 150cc time trial.)

    The reason they changed Kalimari Desert is because in Tour there's two versions of the track, one where it's regular course, and one where you go into the tunnel on the tracks. They combined both versions into this one.

  • @princesshannah7
    @princesshannah7 2 ปีที่แล้ว +95

    Oh yeah, the train track lap was something they added in Tour, I'm so glad to see it included here!! It does sound like they're continuing the trend of trying to blend Tour's multiple variations on a course into the Switch versions (like what they did with Tokyo and Paris in Wave 1).

    • @NintendoMusicChannel
      @NintendoMusicChannel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well each game has a gimmick or newly introduced thing. Mario Kart 7 introduced segmented races, like Maka Wuhu, Rainbow Road and then Mount Wario, Big Blue and N64 Rainbow Road.
      Tour innovated with tracks that change their course as you go, which... as an isolated feature is really cool. It's a shame it's stuck on a terrible mobile game... so it's a super welcomed addition to 8.

    • @garfreeek
      @garfreeek 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No, it's a bit different.
      In tour they don't integrate them. They're brand new levels. Like the snes games of old had Mario circuit 1, Mario circuit 2, Mario circuit 3 etc.
      What they've done here is meld all those tracks together. So that's something exclusive to the booster pack, and just a REALLY cool and fun way to make these feel like fresh and full console worthy tracks!
      (And I keep saying it, tour is really, really fair. And great entertainment on busses and trains for 2 to 3 years now! 😁)

    • @chrispyynugget1537
      @chrispyynugget1537 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NintendoMusicChannel To be fair, that mechanic would never go well with fans in a mainline game. People would get upset seeing three same tracks with different layouts. Tour is the perfect game to try this out since its constantly getting updates which means fans are getting new tracks or track variations every two weeks without the complaint of a track being a waste of space in a mainline game.

    Biggest thing for me is they launched this wave with much better communication and timing with the countdown & worldwide launch. This is how they should've been doing it.

    I obviously like having new tracks, but I'm honestly still miffed about them just porting Tour tracks after all these years. • @HyperFlo519

      I think it's quite the other way around. The Tour ported tracks are a blast to play in 200cc because most of the turns and twist feel smoother. I will say that I have one small nitpick with the Kalimari Desert course, in that the ramp that suddenly appears to throw you onto the train tracks is a bit jarring, both from it’s weird angle and the fact that it randomly appears there with no obvious way of how it could have gotten there. I kind of wish they had a better way of making that transition.

      I feel like the ramp really helps direct player on to the tracks. I’ve heard people say the should have just put up one of those Lakitu arrow barrier things they introduced in wave 1 but honestly that would have probably been even more confusing to most people (and on top of that, the turn would be so sharp that everyone would just sail past the turn and get counted out of bounds). With the ramp, you drive up it, you naturally follow the gentile curve, you jump off it, and presto, you’re on the tracks and set to the perfect angle to continue.

    Sydney Sprint is easily my favorite song in this wave. It’s the kind of music I’d normally want to cruise around in, especially near the ocean. It’s as if they said, “Let’s grab that band from Mario 3D World and have them just jam on this Fast smooth jazz tune. Go all out.”
    Funny enough, I didn’t even realize the 2d cutouts in the opera house because I go through there so fast and at an angle, so I just get a glimpse at them. I guess it fools me even more because absolutely every other character, in and around the course, is in full 3D. I only found out they were 2d from this video.
    As for Sky High, I do like the fact that it is very based on antigravity and flight where it really feels like one of the more different courses in Mario Kart 8. It kind of flips the script where you are constantly dealing with those kind of physics. I also was a little confused by the rail in a similar fashion as the Underwater Machines in the MK8 standard Water Park track, where you see machines that look like obstacles (not bumpers), but they are boosts as long as you are anti-grav. (And I think they become obstacles if you hit them, while not anti-grav, requiring the player to be track aware of their anti-grav status)

    I was really impressed with Wave 2 when I first played the 8 tracks. Out of these 8 tracks, GBA Snow Land is my favorite, with N64 Kalimari Desert being a very close second. To be honest, though, I am a huge fan of winter race tracks in general. In fact, my favorite Mario Kart track of all time is a winter track (3DS Rosalina's Ice World). However, there are two winter tracks I don't really like, and those are DK Summit and Ice Ice Outpost. I have a problem with the music for both tracks, but while I'm not sure how I could improve Ice Ice Outpost, the music with DK Summit could be fixed with the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC. I sense an identity crisis in DK Summit whenever I race on that track, since I'm not sure if I'm supposed to feel like I'm casually spending the day at a snowboarding park or going on an epic snowboarding adventure. Fortunately, Wave 2's Kalimari Desert gave me hope for DK Summit if it comes later in the DLC. If the track sounds more like Mount Wario by using trumpets and other "exciting" instruments, then I might finally be happy with DK Summit.

    I've heard people knocking Mario circuit 3. But I think it's really unique . It's not just heavy with nostalgia for me being a SNES gen kid but it's also so different to other mk8 tracks because Ite has no gimmicks. Just kart racing on a flat track, so much fun!

    There's a bug at the end of sky high sundae which makes it so it's nearly impossible to clear the section right before the finish line if you are hit by a thunder bolt (you keep on getting picked up by lakitu). They really need to patch that soonish (this was on 100cc btw)

    The thing is, Wave 2 STILL doesn't look great. They really only made the new tracks slightly more visually complex than the ones from the First Wave - and they still heavily clash with the more detailed and frankly much better-looking Mario Kart 8 Deluxe art style. As whole, the track remakes just don't even come close to the original Mario Kart 8 Deluxe ones.
    A great comparison is the remake for SNES's Donut Plains 3 and the new one for SNES's Mario Circuit 3. While the latter does very little in terms of reinterpreting the SNES's limited graphics into something new and fresh (directly translating the old graphics into plain-looking 3d renders), the former turns what previously was one of the standard more boring-looking Mario tracks into a beautifully-looking water-drenched dirt road with water sections. It not only offers a completely new and unique flavor to the track, it fleshes it out, bringing new mechanics into it. It genuinely is one of the most memorable tracks of the entire game because of it - and none of these new tracks attempt something even close to it (including the new Waluigi Pinball remake, which just looks very underwhelming in my opinion. They could've done some much more with it both graphically and mechanically).
    A lot of people give the same old, tired argument of the price-tag justifying the sheer amount of new tracks, even if they don't look great. While I can respect that opinion and still agree to a certain degree, I still wished this DLC wasn't a thing - because I'll ALWAYS value consistency above everything.

      well, if this DLC idea started in september 2021... i kinda understand that with all the dlc begging, nintendo wanted just cheap track out the fastest way possible, hence the more quantity decision than quality compare to wii u dlc.

      agreed on that last part. That's why I'm so tempted to play with the booster pass reverse fix mod, which makes the base tracks look like the BCP. My problem is that none of them ahve the lighting that the BCP have, and that the winter animal crossing stage is blue instead of white. I really hate the textures of 8D and only really got 8D because of the booster pass finally looking like a mario kart again.

  • @JonathonV

    You folks seem to be really missing out by not playing MarioKart Tour. Let me explain.
    With the exception of the rerecordings of the soundtracks and some graphics upgrades to get it to the large screen, we’ve seen all these tracks in Tour already, some of them (like New York Minute) almost three years ago, so you can really see the evolution of where these DLC tracks come from. (Admittedly, Sky High Sundae premiered in 8 first, but it showed up in Tour two weeks later.)
    You noted that the courses look different in different laps; it’s because they’re separate courses in Tour that have been amalgamated into one course in the DLC.
    They did the same with Kalamari Desert: in Tour, there’s Kalamari Desert 2, which was the first to let you race on the railroad.
    Also, the improvements to Choco Mountain (that cave section, plus the flight section) came to Tour last year.
    Anyway, like I said, people are missing so much by not playing Tour. I suppose it does make the DLC seem better, though, if you don’t play Tour, because it gives you the feeling that everything is new! 🙂
    Thanks for your comments and reviews!

  • @MrVideoGameDude

    I genuinely think this DLC is purely a placeholder until MK 9. I reckon Nintendo originally planned to release MK 9 on Switch, but once they saw how well MK 8 Deluxe was selling they decided to push it to Switch 2 (why randomly release 9 when 8 Deluxe is not only selling like a brand new mario kart, but is now the best selling MK of all time and growing).
    So instead they pivoted to this DLC to keep interest in 8 Deluxe going until MK 9 eventually is released on Switch 2. From that viewpoint it is very easy to overlook some of the rough areas on these DLC tracks - just extra bonus content! I think this also explains how late this DLC came in MK 8 Deluxe life - it didn’t come earlier as it was not the plan.
    Another point for this theory - MK 9 would just end the good sales of 8 Deluxe, so it makes so much sense to release as possibly even a launch title for Switch 2. Leaving Switch 1 the only Nintendo console (I think?) to not get an original mario kart. A 10/10 system seller for switch 2, and you get the full sales potential out of 8 Deluxe.

  • @supier_men7522

    I see so many comments saying "I don't like the new DLC because the first wave sucked and I like quality throughout." Nintendo isn't a robot, they aren't perfect. If you decided to write your first book and a second book, and you get famous for the second book, so people read your first book and decide the books suck because the first one sucked so much. Thats why revision is a thing. You can mess something up bad, but you can put more time and effort into it to improve something.

    I don't think there are too many obstacles in New York Minute, the only place you can really go off the track is the Central Park area and that's only one turn so it's easy to stay on the road. I like the taxis and roaming goombas because having both a hazard that you can recognize from the actual real-world city as well as a hazard from the mario world helps to unite both themes.
