I know you don't care, but I had a bizarre dream that involved elements from Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons, SCP, real life, and the Dark Cloud series. Basically, you farm a lot, but weird things happen all the time in the town. Like, if you even think of 1:30, the time immediately goes to 1:30 AM or PM depending on which is closer with nobody knowing about it but you. And if you think of 4 o clock, then it will perpetually stay at 4 o clock pending on how long it takes to catch up. Voice acting happens, weird lights form from neighboring houses that contain creepy things in them, and it all correlates to an end of the world situation from a team up of numerous SCP monsters working together
Know these videos take AGES to make , but holy crap they're so nurturing to my harvest moon / sos soul , PLEASE continue this series with this brand of games im begging you
I haven't played this game in years, and was really on the fence about getting the remastered version. But this made me cry so hard at the end, it reminded me of the last time I played the original when I was about 10yrs old, and cried just as much. I really love this game! Man, what a ride that story is even in the remake. But there are still some (bad fever dream) theories I can't get out of my mind. What if Hugh DID kill the turtle and have another demon like himself inhabit it's body. Rock may be dense (harhar), but he can sense that something is off. Which brings me to the main crack theory behind it all: Romana is an immortal witch. She (and Sebastian) seem to be unaffected by time. My theory is that she made a deal with a demon to grant her loyal butler immortality in exchange for a human vessel. That vessel was Hugh. Nina, being no one's fool, caught on to this foul act and confronted Romana. That sealed her fate, and Romana attempted to turn Nina into another vessel. But without a specified target, immortality was granted to Gary/Galen. Because Nina aint playin by your rules, she then peaced out, sending the demon inside her back to hell. Lastly, to ensure her faithful cats would stay by her side for all eternity, Romana offered the turtle as another vessel. Crazy shit, I know. But wait, there's more! Maybe the reason your character ages much faster than everybody else is because Lumina is siphoning your life force. She is the decendant of a witch afterall.

Firstly, cinnamon toast crunch is the GOAT of cereal. Secondly, I've said it once I've said it again, I wish more farming games took the AWL approach because it's just a unique experience. I'm about to graduate and get my game design degree this month (six days from now actually), and it's games like this one that inspire me to make games that I want other people to enjoy.

my favourite cereal was nesquik chocolate puffs for the longest time and through out my entire childhood. however now as an adultmy favourite cereal has been Captain Crunch peanut butter, and if im ever feeling like extra sweet goodness i'll chow down reese puff cereal for a nice in between.

So yeah, I really enjoyed seeing it all together, as expected. I have yet to actually play the game despite it being gifted to me and I figured I would stream it since it's so story-focused. This just gets me more excited! I haven't eaten cereal in so long... but my favorites growing up was probably a tossup between Reeses Puffs and Cookie crisp. Cuz I'm a choco-holic haha. The "Cecilia and Matthew having a domestic on my property" made me laugh before, and it made me laugh now. I just so happened to look at the screen when you mentioned the soil part with the zoom-in, and that got a good laugh outta me too. It felt like going on a journey watching Jack grow old! best harvest moon series are this "wonderful life", as you said with the story progression, character can become old, npc die, new npc on year 2, your kid can grow. and also "back to nature" are best in my opinion, with the rival bachelor / bachelorette actually can invite you to their marriage. both are best farming games!
Harvest Moon DS and DS Cute are so nostalgic for me- I wonder why they reduced the bachelors and bachelorettes. I loved marrying Flora, Skye, Kai, and even considering marrying the mermaid (Lola?) but never got around to it.
I'll say this, Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life was released on the Gamecube in 2003 and Harvest Moon: DS was released in 2005. So, DS was modeled on AWL, and they added characters in to flesh it out. Why they didn't include those characters into the remake, I don't know. I would've loved to see Kai, Skye, Leia, and the Witch Princess in 3D, but my guess is they wanted to keep the remake faithful to the special edition of AWL
Sensory issues surrounding milk & mild lactose intolerance means I don't do cereal all that often (lest i commit the food crime of using water instead of milk for some sort of moisture) but I can always ignore those issues when it comes to reeses puffs
Question, do you remember enough about this playthrough that you could make a video- or Google Doc, or whatever- that's more of a guide on how to replicate this? Like a list format of what you need to buy on what days, what events need triggered by a certain day? What time you were going to bed, were you watering crops twice a day, etc? A major one would be which days you did the dig site (and what timeframe) and which you dedicated to fishing. Sorry, but I'm really interested in the idea of 100%ing at least the first year for my own playthrough.
I definitely remember everything, but putting it into words without being prompted is difficult. It's pretty easy to answer your questions though. I went to bed around 10:30 or 11 PM almost every single day. I watered crops twice a day, right after I woke up and right before I went to sleep everyday (unless I forgot). I was in the digsite pretty much every day barring the 3rd and 8th of every season when it's closed. It's one of the large reasons why my daughter in this series became in academic. It's a great resource for gifts in Year 1 and remains a great resource for money Year 2 and beyond. What I will say is for the digsite is once you befriend everyone and no longer have use for the items as gifts, I would get the new items in the beginning of every chapter, then only dig up golden items. So, if I could see them sprouting out of the dirt OR if I could dig once in the spots that already have been touched, but there wasn't any item sticking out, and find a golden object, I would dig those. If all I could see and uncover were regular items after I befriended everyone, I left and did something else. For me, fishing was simple; I wanted to get all 4 sizes of every fish, so I spent a lot of time fishing in the evenings. This made getting the rod upgrades quick and provided a lot of gift items in the form of raw fish and sashimi. For cutscenes, I followed this guide on Fogu: fogu.com/sos5/ There are three big categories; Heart Events, Rival events, and "random" events. If you navigate to the bachelors and bachelorettes, it shows you the conditions needs to activate their heart events. I can tell from the video that you seem to have prioritized the dateable NPCs and Daryl, then worked worked your way from the most accessible to the least accessible NPCs. @@alchemysaga3745 For this play through, I definitely did not talk to everyone everyday or give everyone a max amount of gifts a day. I pretty much went through friendships in clumps. The first clump was people I knew weren't going to be in Chapter 2 and people that had cutscenes only available in Chapter 1. Those people would get 1-2 gifts a day starting out. Bachelors and bachelorettes were easier since their heart events worked towards friendship and affection, so I mainly focused on them, daryl, nina, and hugh early-game.

Jamie is actually the opposite sex of the player character in spite of it referring to them as a boy. They can be married in either version and are then gendered during the wedding scene. However, the game will end if you marry them. That's only a thing in the English version though for some reason?
I just realized that the aging is inconsistent. In theory, all the elders should’ve died by the time you did but they seemed to have lived a whole nother life with you. Plus the suitors never aged either 😂.
I appreciate your videos a lot. These games were pretty special to me as a kid but now I don't have time to play these anymore. So this is a nice way to still enjoy them. Also your demeaner is very nice.
When I was little and playing this for the first time on my gqmecube, I had Another Wonderful Life. Because I was like 10, thought that Marlin Matthew) and Gustafa were "old and ugly" so I married Rock. I had NO idea that time like actually passed and was SO scandalized that Marlin and and Gustafa barely looked like they changed in year 2 where Rock had full grey lmao XD
The later years wouldn't feel like such a slog if the game had rival marriages and more events. If the marriage candidates started families, maybe the player's kid could get married at the end. Whoever they choose to marry could correspond with their chosen career. Out of all of the HM games, this is the one that would have benefitted the most from rival marriage and it baffles me that they didn't add it!! It's depressing to see the lonely, ageing marriage candidates.
I agree. Rival marriages are a fragment of past RPG's that I wish would return, but apparently the Japanese audience had a mega distaste for them so they just stopped including them in games lol
My favorite cereal is a toss up between Fruity Pebbles and Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Both scratch adjacent sweet cravings to similar effect and I just have to leave it up to my mood on which one I will eat. Keep up the great work, JDG!
Hey thanks for uploading this. I was on year 2 before I got some neurological issues on my hands. I bought the remake at launch. I’m kinda recovering but who knows if I’ll ever be able to handle that many button inputs to see my gameplay through. Seeing the end of your play through got me nostalgic- especially today that I’m getting a bad flare up. This game is so sweet and full of heart. A lovely video & amazing narration. I feel like I got some closure :)

Never played any of the SoS games but I watched this video from start to finish and really enjoyed it, great work! I even got quite emotional at the end, those cut scenes really are special. I bought FoMT recently in the Steam Summer Sale and can't wait to get stuck into my first SoS game :-)
I looooove stretching a three hour video over like four days by listening to it while I drive. You totally got me interested in this game!! I tried the SoS franchise before but I think I picked a dud (poot). This definitely looks more fun!
You should give it a try! PoOT is definitely not everyone's cup of tea. Personally, I reccomend Friends of Mineral Town to get the authentic experience. A Wonderful Life is definitely an outlier lol

I will permit you your (incorrect) opinion on Marlin/Matthew, if only because you did such a great job with the video- and were very generous to leave midroll ads off. I do like how they added on to some of the storylines they were forced to abandon in the original version of the game, like the "Wonderfuls." And I'm totally not biased towards Matthew because I, too, have anxiety and a chronic autoimmune issue.
As I actually played through the game, my opinions on a lot of the bachelors and bachelorettes has changed. Matthew/Marlin is definitely a riser on my ranks, whilst Gustafa and Cody dropped a few places lol

@@alchemysaga3745 Apologies for getting to this late, I was working on a new video pretty intensely. I think I've answered some of your questions in previous replies, but the one about gifting everyone on gift a day everyday is new. I didn't gift everyone 1 gift a day everyday. I worked in "clumps" for the lack of a better term. For example, I started with befriending the bachelors and bacheloreetes 'since I wanted to see their heart events and Rival events ASAP. I got them up to 6 Hearts then stopped, since once you see their 8 Heart event, you can't see rival events. Once I got almost every bachelor up to about 6 Hearts, I worked in different clumps. Daryl was important to befriend super early since he gives you a freed seed maker. Hugh is important to befriend early since year 1 is the only year he likes milk. Nina is important to befriend early cause, well you know. And then I would work between Flora and Carter at the digsite, Lou and Tei at the inn, all the people by the bar, the fireworks bros, and the villa residents. When it comes to actually gifting, most villagers will accept 2 to 4 gifts per day, that's why it was so important for me to collect aromatic herbs all the time and turn them into soup. Those soups along with flowers, fish, eggs, and milk made it pretty easy to befriend a character quickly if I really focused on giving them those 2-4 daily gifts. In terms of time management, the first year is jam packed, so it's tough to prioritize. If you're having trouble, I would do this; Befriend every bachelor and bachelorette to 6 hearts then stop so you can see the Rival events that start in the Summer. Then befriend Nina, Daryl, and Hugh. Most of the missable cutscenes in Chapter 1 require friendship with them. The final heart event doesn't unlock until Winter 1, so spend the time in Summer and Fall seeing Rival Heart Event 1 and 2 for the three couples, befriending as many valley people as possible by giving them 2-4 gifts per day, and working on money by investing in sheep. You shouldn't be filling up your crop fields with crops every season. Making 4 or 5 of each crop available that season is more than enough for recipes, requests, etc. Feel free to let me know if you have any more questions!

Favorites have to be frosted flakes, corn flakes, and pops. They’re just good textures, especially with juust the right amount of milk. Even the generic brand corn flakes and frosted flakes from my local supermarket are good.
Favorite cereals is grape nuts, not because they taste good but because once i finish a bowl of grape nuts i know that what ever life throws at me it wasnt as bad as what i did to myself when i woke up.

My favorite cereals are Lucky Charms (because dehydrated marshmallows are AWESOME), and Maple/Cinnamon Chex (because YUM). Never played any of the Harvest Moon games (thought I've played many of the games that owe their existence to this charming progenitor), but have to say it was touching. Fruity pebbles is my favorite cereal. Once ordered a couple of boxes from Amazon, order got cancelled so I bought some from Walmart. Amazon order ended up coming anyways. I ate all 4 boxes across a month. This was 4 years ago and I’m still obsessed with it (haven’t eaten 4 boxes in a while though and won’t ever do that again for obvious reasons)

Was trying to figure out why in the world you couldnt name an animal Pine and it turns out this game has an insanely strict profanity filter, and a lot of them dobt make sense. It also censors names that the game *generates itself*, like certain hybrid crop numbers
If you ever buy a hot bottle bag be careful with how you use it. You can essentially slowly cook your skin and get a hot bottle rash(erythema ab igne) which can potentially leave permanent marks.

Voice acting happens, weird lights form from neighboring houses that contain creepy things in them, and it all correlates to an end of the world situation from a team up of numerous SCP monsters working together

But this made me cry so hard at the end, it reminded me of the last time I played the original when I was about 10yrs old, and cried just as much. I really love this game! Man, what a ride that story is even in the remake.
But there are still some (bad fever dream) theories I can't get out of my mind.
What if Hugh DID kill the turtle and have another demon like himself inhabit it's body. Rock may be dense (harhar), but he can sense that something is off.
Which brings me to the main crack theory behind it all:
Romana is an immortal witch.
She (and Sebastian) seem to be unaffected by time. My theory is that she made a deal with a demon to grant her loyal butler immortality in exchange for a human vessel. That vessel was Hugh. Nina, being no one's fool, caught on to this foul act and confronted Romana. That sealed her fate, and Romana attempted to turn Nina into another vessel. But without a specified target, immortality was granted to Gary/Galen. Because Nina aint playin by your rules, she then peaced out, sending the demon inside her back to hell.
Lastly, to ensure her faithful cats would stay by her side for all eternity, Romana offered the turtle as another vessel.
Crazy shit, I know. But wait, there's more!
Maybe the reason your character ages much faster than everybody else is because Lumina is siphoning your life force. She is the decendant of a witch afterall.

best harvest moon series are this "wonderful life", as you said with the story progression, character can become old, npc die, new npc on year 2, your kid can grow.
and also "back to nature" are best in my opinion, with the rival bachelor / bachelorette actually can invite you to their marriage.

Harvest Moon DS and DS Cute are so nostalgic for me- I wonder why they reduced the bachelors and bachelorettes. I loved marrying Flora, Skye, Kai, and even considering marrying the mermaid (Lola?) but never got around to it.
I'll say this, Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life was released on the Gamecube in 2003 and Harvest Moon: DS was released in 2005. So, DS was modeled on AWL, and they added characters in to flesh it out. Why they didn't include those characters into the remake, I don't know. I would've loved to see Kai, Skye, Leia, and the Witch Princess in 3D, but my guess is they wanted to keep the remake faithful to the special edition of AWL
Sensory issues surrounding milk & mild lactose intolerance means I don't do cereal all that often (lest i commit the food crime of using water instead of milk for some sort of moisture) but I can always ignore those issues when it comes to reeses puffs

Question, do you remember enough about this playthrough that you could make a video- or Google Doc, or whatever- that's more of a guide on how to replicate this? Like a list format of what you need to buy on what days, what events need triggered by a certain day? What time you were going to bed, were you watering crops twice a day, etc?
A major one would be which days you did the dig site (and what timeframe) and which you dedicated to fishing.
Sorry, but I'm really interested in the idea of 100%ing at least the first year for my own playthrough.
I definitely remember everything, but putting it into words without being prompted is difficult. It's pretty easy to answer your questions though. I went to bed around 10:30 or 11 PM almost every single day.
I watered crops twice a day, right after I woke up and right before I went to sleep everyday (unless I forgot).
I was in the digsite pretty much every day barring the 3rd and 8th of every season when it's closed. It's one of the large reasons why my daughter in this series became in academic. It's a great resource for gifts in Year 1 and remains a great resource for money Year 2 and beyond. What I will say is for the digsite is once you befriend everyone and no longer have use for the items as gifts, I would get the new items in the beginning of every chapter, then only dig up golden items. So, if I could see them sprouting out of the dirt OR if I could dig once in the spots that already have been touched, but there wasn't any item sticking out, and find a golden object, I would dig those. If all I could see and uncover were regular items after I befriended everyone, I left and did something else.
For me, fishing was simple; I wanted to get all 4 sizes of every fish, so I spent a lot of time fishing in the evenings. This made getting the rod upgrades quick and provided a lot of gift items in the form of raw fish and sashimi.
For cutscenes, I followed this guide on Fogu: fogu.com/sos5/ There are three big categories; Heart Events, Rival events, and "random" events. If you navigate to the bachelors and bachelorettes, it shows you the conditions needs to activate their heart events. There's an entire section for Rival events here: fogu.com/sos5/events/rival_events.html and the Random events page here tells you how to get all the cutscenes you can see and what season and chapter you can see them in: fogu.com/sos5/events/random_events.html

@@alchemysaga3745 For this play through, I definitely did not talk to everyone everyday or give everyone a max amount of gifts a day. I pretty much went through friendships in clumps. The first clump was people I knew weren't going to be in Chapter 2 and people that had cutscenes only available in Chapter 1. Those people would get 1-2 gifts a day starting out. Bachelors and bachelorettes were easier since their heart events worked towards friendship and affection, so I mainly focused on them, daryl, nina, and hugh early-game.

Jamie is actually the opposite sex of the player character in spite of it referring to them as a boy. They can be married in either version and are then gendered during the wedding scene. However, the game will end if you marry them. That's only a thing in the English version though for some reason?

When I was little and playing this for the first time on my gqmecube, I had Another Wonderful Life. Because I was like 10, thought that Marlin Matthew) and Gustafa were "old and ugly" so I married Rock. I had NO idea that time like actually passed and was SO scandalized that Marlin and and Gustafa barely looked like they changed in year 2 where Rock had full grey lmao XD
They still do that in this version as well. The women in the valley still look great over time while the men get old and ugly lol

The later years wouldn't feel like such a slog if the game had rival marriages and more events. If the marriage candidates started families, maybe the player's kid could get married at the end. Whoever they choose to marry could correspond with their chosen career.
Out of all of the HM games, this is the one that would have benefitted the most from rival marriage and it baffles me that they didn't add it!! It's depressing to see the lonely, ageing marriage candidates.
I agree. Rival marriages are a fragment of past RPG's that I wish would return, but apparently the Japanese audience had a mega distaste for them so they just stopped including them in games lol
My favorite cereal is a toss up between Fruity Pebbles and Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Both scratch adjacent sweet cravings to similar effect and I just have to leave it up to my mood on which one I will eat. Keep up the great work, JDG!

I do like how they added on to some of the storylines they were forced to abandon in the original version of the game, like the "Wonderfuls."
And I'm totally not biased towards Matthew because I, too, have anxiety and a chronic autoimmune issue.
As I actually played through the game, my opinions on a lot of the bachelors and bachelorettes has changed. Matthew/Marlin is definitely a riser on my ranks, whilst Gustafa and Cody dropped a few places lol

I've been trying to use this as a guide on how to 100%, but I've found myself running out of time, particularly in regards to the fishing at night.
@@alchemysaga3745 Apologies for getting to this late, I was working on a new video pretty intensely. I think I've answered some of your questions in previous replies, but the one about gifting everyone on gift a day everyday is new. I didn't gift everyone 1 gift a day everyday. I worked in "clumps" for the lack of a better term. For example, I started with befriending the bachelors and bacheloreetes 'since I wanted to see their heart events and Rival events ASAP. I got them up to 6 Hearts then stopped, since once you see their 8 Heart event, you can't see rival events.
Once I got almost every bachelor up to about 6 Hearts, I worked in different clumps. Daryl was important to befriend super early since he gives you a freed seed maker. Hugh is important to befriend early since year 1 is the only year he likes milk. Nina is important to befriend early cause, well you know. And then I would work between Flora and Carter at the digsite, Lou and Tei at the inn, all the people by the bar, the fireworks bros, and the villa residents.
When it comes to actually gifting, most villagers will accept 2 to 4 gifts per day, that's why it was so important for me to collect aromatic herbs all the time and turn them into soup. Those soups along with flowers, fish, eggs, and milk made it pretty easy to befriend a character quickly if I really focused on giving them those 2-4 daily gifts.
In terms of time management, the first year is jam packed, so it's tough to prioritize. If you're having trouble, I would do this; Befriend every bachelor and bachelorette to 6 hearts then stop so you can see the Rival events that start in the Summer. Then befriend Nina, Daryl, and Hugh. Most of the missable cutscenes in Chapter 1 require friendship with them. The final heart event doesn't unlock until Winter 1, so spend the time in Summer and Fall seeing Rival Heart Event 1 and 2 for the three couples, befriending as many valley people as possible by giving them 2-4 gifts per day, and working on money by investing in sheep. You shouldn't be filling up your crop fields with crops every season. Making 4 or 5 of each crop available that season is more than enough for recipes, requests, etc.

Favorites have to be frosted flakes, corn flakes, and pops. They’re just good textures, especially with juust the right amount of milk. Even the generic brand corn flakes and frosted flakes from my local supermarket are good.

Favorite cereals is grape nuts, not because they taste good but because once i finish a bowl of grape nuts i know that what ever life throws at me it wasnt as bad as what i did to myself when i woke up.

Favorite cereal is definitely frosted flakes with slices of banana. That was a huge pregnancy craving of mine and i still enjoy it!
That honestly sounds like it would go hard. The banana could mellow out some of the sweetness.
i can see that cinnamon toast crunch is populat and that makes sense bc its my favorite too!! and fruity pebbles… theyre a close second i think.

Milk after, unless it's oatmeal (which I make with milk, because it tastes better that way to me), in which case, I add milk first, then oatmeal, fruit, and any other seasonings I feel like (honey, maple, brown sugar, etc), before cooking. My favorite cereals are Lucky Charms (because dehydrated marshmallows are AWESOME), and Maple/Cinnamon Chex (because YUM).
Never played any of the Harvest Moon games (thought I've played many of the games that owe their existence to this charming progenitor), but have to say it was touching. Misted up a little at the "it's been a wonderful life" ending.

Fruity pebbles is my favorite cereal. Once ordered a couple of boxes from Amazon, order got cancelled so I bought some from Walmart. Amazon order ended up coming anyways. I ate all 4 boxes across a month. This was 4 years ago and I’m still obsessed with it (haven’t eaten 4 boxes in a while though and won’t ever do that again for obvious reasons)
I legit have never ordered cereal online lol. Maybe it's because cereal is such a specific craving that, once the cereal came in the mail, I wouldn't want it once it got to my house

Yeah, it definitely takes some time. A lot of cutscenes are dependent on having high affection with the villagers, so I really focused on befriending them early lol

Was trying to figure out why in the world you couldnt name an animal Pine and it turns out this game has an insanely strict profanity filter, and a lot of them dobt make sense.
It also censors names that the game *generates itself*, like certain hybrid crop numbers

If you ever buy a hot bottle bag be careful with how you use it. You can essentially slowly cook your skin and get a hot bottle rash(erythema ab igne) which can potentially leave permanent marks.
