Really wonderful story telling here. No real special effects, just excellent acting, dramatic pauses and music that builds a crescendo of suspense -- all in a staid, middle class British household.
I read this story as a boy and the story was heavy with emotions and it still is even in this film adaptation. at 9 and 10 years old those emotions branded in to my mind obviously. This proves what a deep outstanding writer Lawrence was...his stories and stories from other writers woke me up to loving reading. I dreamed of becoming a writer, and I did...as a newspaper writer and photographer as one of my jobs as a young man in the world. ...Thank you for posting this filmed version of a most profound story so richly portrayed.
My girlfriend and I just watched this recently. She loved it. Especially the dialogue between the mother and her brother. Followed the story very well.
You have to be very careful the messages you send out to your children, they know more than you think and take on more than you know, couple that with their innocence and you have a ticking time bomb of emotions. Please always guard your words around your children.
I found this story in a basement full of boxes of torn and worn books, unattached to the rest of its book, and loved it so much. I read it over twice and made copies to send a few friends. After losing sight of the last copy, mine, as the original had been eaten by moths, I was saddened to think it no longer existed, my imagination working on possible titles to substitute the unknown, contacting friends and describing one of many finds I had sent them. It was such a treat to find this feature film. Somehow, I knew this was the one, from early on. Thank-you for access to this treasure.

This is a great movie! My favorites are Mystery, murder, suspense movies, late 20’s-late 50’s. I still have hundreds (1000’s?) like this to discover. They literally do NOT make them like this anymore. Proof that millions in CGI has no chance of competing with a great story, great actors, great director and great producers and crew. Hollywood in this era just doesn’t get it. But then, they no longer have the talent to stand up to this! Thanks for posting.

I read this fascinating story back when I was a boy of about 10 years old maybe. I thought it was fascinating and the story kept me spellbound with many changing emotions. At the time I never knew there was a movie version but this version would've been an ideal viewing of the story brought to life. I must also admit that this version is the only film of this great rich story I've ever seen. The character portrayals are absolutely excellent by these actors/actresses who honestly make the story live and breathe and sigh and cry and laugh and keep brushing our human emotions with such truth and compassion. ...Thank you for posting "The Rocking Horse Winner". It still stands as a pivotal read from my boyhood past and a wonderful movie to watch here and now over 50 years later since first reading the story.

I’ve just had a field day reading all the parallels to my childhood. I absorbed the main characters to try to cope. Now i see it all before me.

You be surprised how many people rather gambled away even their mortgage payment at the horses which is what my mom's husband did and we lost the house. He was a gambler that lost our family car too. Unbelievable and why I don't like to gamble unless for fun and not money.

Paul is talking about the importance for all men ( this includes women ) to not get obsessed with chasing riches. Think about this: what is the beginning, the 'root' of ALL evil? The word 'all' is the key. We are told that Satan is the originator of Evil; not any "love of money". Satan's mistake was his pride and the violence that he did to people...and not his love of money. In Ezekiel 28:11-19, we are told about Satan. The Lord says that he was the "...anointed cherub that covers..." The Lord says about Satan in verse 15: "You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, 'til iniquity was found in you... and you became filled with violence within, ( oppression of people that he had authority over, injustice, and physical violence against people ), and you sinned; therefore I cast you as a profane thing out of the mountain of God...and your heart was lifted up ( proud...pride ) because of your beauty." So...Evil originated with Satan because of his pride and his abuse ( violence) of his authority, and not because he loved money. And Paul was not talking about Satan anyway; he was warning Man to not get caught up with lusting and chasing after money & riches which can cause...all kinds of evil for man. I read this cover to cover in J r high school and it broke my heart ... Then I came across it in at my university ... and reread it ... and it still broke my heart! ... This version is excellent I've haven't seen it for years ... but I can't wait !
Sometimes a second read reveals things that didn't seem pertinent the first time around. Often we are a more experienced version of ourselves; sometimes (I do this) you'll race through the first time, be amazed and do a deeper read next time. Third time thru you might find even more!
This film talks about how much pressure parents have on their children. It wasn't the horse that was haunted - it was his parents that let the toxicity fester in that house to become something evil and malignant so much that it killed their little boy.
100% Darlene, it's a "excellent" story, the way the parents were toxic, as to say . The mother ,well ,not needs ,but wants. Look what her wants got her ,lost the richest little kid over the extravagant life she couldn't afford . If it pops up on the handset, I can't help myself , but I watch it again and again.it is a great story, real like , nothing they put on TV ,comes near it ,well put Darlene.
WOW..... I tuned-in for yet another necessary "fix" of John Newland, and I got this Welcome Surprise Fix with John Mills = Charming film with an engaging little storyline!!! The bizarre talking horse-n-house were indeed 'One Step Beyond'. The somewhat "frenzied" riding of the horse was particularly eerie!!
As I said, I saw this years ago.... I had been reluctant to see it again because I was so creeped out from the memories of how that boy looks on his rocking horse! I just watched it again. I'm going to have to let this one sink in for a while!

Parents have to be very careful in what they say when around children. Children are like sponge and they act on what adult do or say. This is a moral story to all adult. Love this program I have recently discovered on TH-cam.
I have loved this movie since I first watched it almost 40 years ago . It was amongst the first movies I ever taped when I purchased my first VCR in 1983 . I wouldn't even know which genre of film one would call it ?
I'm surprised to be asked to comment,my memory is that good that I can't remember watching it so I may have to watch it again, watched for the first time last night and I recall parts that I thought I thought I'd seen it before,
This movie is 100 times better than the short story we were forced to read and analyze to death in high school. Probably because of the way it was taught-find the foreshadowing and symbolism for your marks or else flunk the course and never be able to appreciate literature- a fate worse than death!
Spoiler alert!!! Saw this decades ago when I was quite young, made quite an impression on me. The obsessive frenzy of the boy on that rocking horse was so scary! Didn't even realize that he had won a fortune, saved the family, especially his parents who needed to grow up and be responsible adults.
Such a sad ending, but how could a child die just from being obsessed with knowing the winner of a horse race? When Bassett told him that Malobar had won, he smiled and told his Mother, "I'm lucky. " Then he died. What could have caused it?
It's just a general principle of the universe: you don't usually get something-for-nothing. Why (?) Because a lot of something-for-nothing in the universe . . . would undercut the something-for-something that we expect the universe to operate on most of the time. Look at it this way: would you want a universe where you'd pay for something . . . and never get it (?) Of course not. The corollary is obvious: if the boy got something (knowledge of the future) . . . he had to pay for it (with his life). It just reaffirms how we expect things to work . . .
Ever since I saw this on TV as a kid it's haunted me. I've seen at least 3 versions but this is the best one. I recently bought an anthology of D.H. Lawrence short stories and this is in it. I have an interest in why some child actors stay in the craft and others go off to more mundane jobs so I like to check their IMDb entries and see what their careers were/are like. John Howard Davies only appeared 6 times in front of the screen but he ended up producing some of my favourite comedy of the 70s including Fawlty Towers, The Good Life, The Goodies and Monty Python. Vale John.
Though produced when i was a child, and though I am partly descended from the British Isles, as an American I always see these British episodes as a view into a foreign culture in a far off time

This wonderful episode in" content and style " of John Newlad' s"One Step Beyond" american 60" series has an importatnt difference. "One step Beyond" begins always with Mr. Newland saying that the theme of the series were strange experiences that happennred in real Life. Well, this storiy here is an adaptation of D. H. Lawrence short story. All complete ( and magnifcent) ficcion. Beatiful but out of the imagination of a great writer.
At least the love of money didn't fall in place for the love this mother had for her children, however it took a huge win and a massive amount to wake this boy out of his sleep. Horse took the boy for a ride and won.
,Great story and acting. The first thing which sets this one is apart from today's movies is the lack of gunfire or explosives. The present American movies, mostly, have substituted thoughtful subject matter with gore and blood. Americans seem to worship guns and violence. Fifty years or more disagreements were mostly settled with fists. Some Schools had gun clubs, but nobody shot up the classes.

Sometimes a second read reveals things that didn't seem pertinent the first time around. Often we are a more experienced version of ourselves; sometimes (I do this) you'll race through the first time, be amazed and do a deeper read next time. Third time thru you might find even more!
The cinematography of this episode is amazing, on par with an Alfred Hitchcock film.
At 1:12:53, the clouds in the night sky are running horses! Just a split-second, but beautiful when scene paused.

Not just an episode. this was an actual movie of the book.
This film talks about how much pressure parents have on their children. It wasn't the horse that was haunted - it was his parents that let the toxicity fester in that house to become something evil and malignant so much that it killed their little boy.
100% Darlene, it's a "excellent" story, the way the parents were toxic, as to say . The mother ,well ,not needs ,but wants. Look what her wants got her ,lost the richest little kid over the extravagant life she couldn't afford . If it pops up on the handset, I can't help myself , but I watch it again and again.it is a great story, real like , nothing they put on TV ,comes near it ,well put Darlene.

WOW..... I tuned-in for yet another necessary "fix" of John Newland, and I got this Welcome Surprise Fix with John Mills = Charming film with an engaging little storyline!!! The bizarre talking horse-n-house were indeed 'One Step Beyond'. The somewhat "frenzied" riding of the horse was particularly eerie!!

As I said, I saw this years ago.... I had been reluctant to see it again because I was so creeped out from the memories of how that boy looks on his rocking horse! I just watched it again. I'm going to have to let this one sink in for a while!
@Cynthia Kinman: I recently read the Lawrence story and felt it had an obvious OSB theme -- that's why I uploaded this corresponding movie. But if the truth be told . . . I myself haven't watched it. I have a strict personal rule to never watch movies where children are main characters. They make me really uncomfortable . . .

John Howard Davies, who plays the boy here, went on to become a top BBC television comedy director. He died in 2011.

Parents have to be very careful in what they say when around children. Children are like sponge and they act on what adult do or say. This is a moral story to all adult. Love this program I have recently discovered on TH-cam.

I have loved this movie since I first watched it almost 40 years ago . It was amongst the first movies I ever taped when I purchased my first VCR in 1983 . I wouldn't even know which genre of film one would call it ?

I'm surprised to be asked to comment,my memory is that good that I can't remember watching it so I may have to watch it again, watched for the first time last night and I recall parts that I thought I thought I'd seen it before,
This movie is 100 times better than the short story we were forced to read and analyze to death in high school. Probably because of the way it was taught-find the foreshadowing and symbolism for your marks or else flunk the course and never be able to appreciate literature- a fate worse than death!

Saw this decades ago when I was quite young, made quite an impression on me. The obsessive frenzy of the boy on that rocking horse was so scary! Didn't even realize that he had won a fortune, saved the family, especially his parents who needed to grow up and be responsible adults.

Such a sad ending, but how could a child die just from being obsessed with knowing the winner of a horse race? When Bassett told him that Malobar had won, he smiled and told his Mother, "I'm lucky. " Then he died. What could have caused it?
It's just a general principle of the universe: you don't usually get something-for-nothing. Why (?) Because a lot of something-for-nothing in the universe . . . would undercut the something-for-something that we expect the universe to operate on most of the time. Look at it this way: would you want a universe where you'd pay for something . . . and never get it (?) Of course not. The corollary is obvious: if the boy got something (knowledge of the future) . . . he had to pay for it (with his life). It just reaffirms how we expect things to work . . .
The boy was also in Little Lord Faultnery or something like that, also a classic

Ever since I saw this on TV as a kid it's haunted me. I've seen at least 3 versions but this is the best one. I recently bought an anthology of D.H. Lawrence short stories and this is in it.
I have an interest in why some child actors stay in the craft and others go off to more mundane jobs so I like to check their IMDb entries and see what their careers were/are like. John Howard Davies only appeared 6 times in front of the screen but he ended up producing some of my favourite comedy of the 70s including Fawlty Towers, The Good Life, The Goodies and Monty Python. Vale John.

There is something much scarier about black and white photography. It adds play of light and shadow that color does not have.
Though produced when i was a child, and though I am partly descended from the British Isles, as an American I always see these British episodes as a view into a foreign culture in a far off time

This wonderful episode in" content and style " of John Newlad' s"One Step Beyond" american 60" series has an importatnt difference. "One step Beyond" begins always with Mr. Newland saying that the theme of the series were strange experiences that happennred in real Life. Well, this storiy here is an adaptation of D. H. Lawrence short story. All complete ( and magnifcent) ficcion. Beatiful but out of the imagination of a great writer.
At least the love of money didn't fall in place for the love this mother had for her children, however it took a huge win and a massive amount to wake this boy out of his sleep. Horse took the boy for a ride and won.
,Great story and acting. The first thing which sets this one is apart from today's movies is the lack of gunfire or explosives. The present American movies, mostly, have substituted thoughtful subject matter with gore and blood. Americans seem to worship guns and violence. Fifty years or more disagreements were mostly settled with fists. Some Schools had gun clubs, but nobody shot up the classes.
