      The title is hyped. This volcano has never erupted as a VEI 8, which is what is the accepted definition of supervolcano.

      @@williamstandish2926 that might not be true actually. A study in 2020 called “Distribution and Eruptive Volume of Aso-4 Pyroclastic Density Current and Tephra Fall Deposits, Japan: A M8 Super-Eruption” shows that it was a VEI 8.

      Schools makes such subjects pretty boring. Astronomy is such an interesting topic too which I realised after watching videos on TH-cam while in school it was a tiny chapter in geography where you had to learn the definitions of meteorite, meteor, comet, planet, star, etc and number of moons of every planet and paste it in exams as it is, that's all.

      I'm a science teacher and also have a degree in geology. I'd love to teach my students about volcanoes at this level but most students aren't interested. We also have schedules to adhere to. I do really try to teach problem solving and critical thinking skills instead of having them memorize random facts.

      Looking it up its not the oldest volcano in the world rather it is the oldest preserved volcanic *explosive caldera complex* in the world dating back to 1.88 Ga. In this case the magma involved in this volcanism was rhyolite and rhyodacite so extremely siliceous material. This occurred in the context of the ancient super continent Nuna/Columbia during the Paleoproterozoic.
      There was volcanism on Earth for billions of years before this its just little material that old survived to the present day.

      You must be talking about some basalt exposures (maybe near fissure locations?) from the Central Atlantic magmatic province, which erupted a couple hundred million years ago, over a period of about 600k years.

    Question; locally there's Green Lakes state park, NY. They are both extremely deep, 1 round lake looks like a blow vent, I've free dived as deep as I dared to over the years, and saw the walls are vertical for at least 50 feet down into the blackness. Green lake also has nearly vertical walls. The area has igneous rock fragments all over the park. It is also known there's a submarine passage between the two lakes at some depth verified by sonar. My question is; are they extinct explosive eruption remnants? Similar to the famous diamond mine in South Africa?

    Does steam take up more space than water or is it atmospheric pressure coming into play where the water is trying to dillude itself into the mixture of air? Or something like that.. I'm not entirely sure how to word what I'm trying to convey

    • @rembrandtshadows
      @rembrandtshadows 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      its sort of like this . . . .when a liquid like water expands from a liquid into a vapor, its about a 1000 fold increase in volume at sea level. The pressure of the overburden can contain any expansion by water. Keep in mind that a lot sulphur exists in volcano rocks and can mix with water to become sulfuric acid, which will weaken rocks. Certain metamorphic minerals are created many miles below the surface of the earth in the presence of water.

    I think it would be informative to contrast the sort of unrest we're seeing now, with what geologists would expect preceding a VEI-7 eruption at a complex like this one.

      Its kinetic energy or alternatively as @Mr Peabody mentioned Inertia remember we are dealing with an explosion here the relative difference in momentum from the expanding shock front is high thus it can't cool or slow down as there is even more pressure coming from behind.
      Its the same reason a Tsunami continues to surge forwards even after the displacement event, you have a propagating wave carrying high temperature pyroclastic material in suspension. Remember that temperature is the average kinetic energy of a substance and kinetic energy is conserved and these pyroclastic flows are in many hundreds to thousands of degrees hotter than the surrounding air and at much higher densities you can't compare this to a puny chemical explosion.

      Pyroclastic flows move at incredible speeds and kick up a cushion of air that appears to reduce friction and allows the flow to travel longer distances.

      if you look up the Yellostone hot spot, it has a lot of interesting pyroclastic flows associated with it.

    Neither Aso nor Sakurajima qualifies as a "Super" volcano! To be classified as such a volcano has to have produced at least ONE eruption that ejected a minimum of 1000 cubic kilometers worth of material and neither Aso nor Sakurajima has ever risen to that level!

    I'm glad you threw in that little statement at the end about simply not knowing anything for sure... There have been no humans in recorded history that have witnessed a super eruption, so we really don't know what kind of activity would proceed such an event. I'm not being a doom sayer, but it's wise to keep our eyes open and not make any broad sweeping proclamations concerning this type of volcano. Cheers and good job. A suggestion. Follow the lead of another good science presenter that I watch regularly. Record yourself at a news desk of sorts with imagery and explanatory graphics (maps of known subsurface features, lava chambers, etc.) in the background. Make your presentations a little longer too with more emphasis on in depth reporting of recent papers published in the science journals. I'm sure the audience would enjoy hearing about this kind of thing, and your personal evaluations as well.
