My wife and I visited the Mount Aso area last December. What a stunningly beautiful part of Japan. Hopefully you enjoyed a nice soak after the hike and maybe even some basashi. As you are a sake sort of guy, try to find a bottle of Nabeshima from Saga.
Gorgeous views, thanks for flying your drone around Nakadake, Quinlan. I spent a good part of a day hiking around the W side there but I left a bit frustrated by not being able to take a closer look at the crater proper. Now I know what it looks like. 🙏 (...even though I enjoyed every minute I was there. If you get there by train from Kumamoto it all starts on a high with that spectacular reveal when the train line enters the caldera through the opening cut by the Shira-kawa, using that weird switch-back)
I have visited Mt Aso twice. The first time we were not allowed to the crater because of the gases it was emitting however on my next visit some months later we had a lot more success. I have to admit I have not seen another place like it in Japan. When you are getting close you can see the jagged mountain ranges which I assumed is the caldera which gives it a prehistoric look. It is impressive to see the whole area but for me nothing beats Mt Fuji viewed from the lake shoreline. It's hard to explain what you feel to be in the presence of this monster. All I know that if she were to have a full on eruption, the hotel we stayed at across the lake would not survive. Nice video, brought back memories of 2004/2005. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for introducing me as a Japanese living in Aso. Personally, I prefer the countryside to the city, and I would recommend Kumamoto to everyone because of its rich nature and clean groundwater rather than Tokyo or Osaka. From a Japanese who was not born in Aso, but whose dream of one day moving to Aso to farm and drive an old Hilux has come true.
not sure whether you will still reply but i have a few questions: - how long was the hike? - is there an entrance fee required? - when was the year of the visit? the weather looks nice. - do you need a permit to fly your drone during your visit? thanks in advance!
Hi! Wow, this was a long time ago. I can't remember exactly how long it took me, but keep in mind that I did a lot of filming, flying my drone, and talking to the camera, so my time would be skewed anyway. You can find other people's times for hikes on websites like alltrails and Yamap.. There's no entrance fee. That trip was late summer/early fall. In Japan you need to register with the Japanese government (online) and pay a registration fee for drones! There is a lot of information on this in English if you google.
Yes, absolutely! Generally you don't use a tent though, but rather stay in one of the empty "refuge lodges" that they have scattered around the mountains. You just bring everything but the tent. (Pad, sleeping bag, stove, etc.)
Hey Quinlan, absolutely love all your shots in the video! I was wondering if the vegetation only grows at a certain time during the year? Since based on all the other videos of Mt. Aso I could find, the ground just tends to be barren, brown rock all around and look nowhere as cool as what's here.

The Aso caldera is actually the earth's largest caldera. Most caldera lists miss off Aso, I wonder why? Possibly because several are presented as the largest as part of their tourist information. Nakadake has a beautiful blue sulfuric-acid lake within it. I lived in Kumamoto for several years whilst working at the Honda Kikuchi motorcycle factory. Incidentally, the earthquakes around Kumamoto are magmatic, whereas in most parts of Japan they are seismic. Seismic events shake you horizontally, magmatic events lift and drop you.
That's interesting! I didn't realize that was what defined the different movement!! I recently felt a small magmatic quake when I was near the base of Mt. Iwate!! Exciting!
