  • I visit Tramtown at Blackpool Transport's Rigby Road depot to show you all the heritage trams, including the famous illuminated versions such as the Great Western Train tram and HMS Blackpool. Tramtown is the new name for the heritage section of the depot, with future plans to create a state of the art visitor centre to make a much more enjoyable experience for visitors whilst also protecting the precious vintage trams. A whole new roof for the shed will be required before this can happen so a Crowdfunder campaign has been setup to help with this. Money raised via the guided tours will also help towards the project.

    Been on this myself and it reminded me of when i was a little boy my dad took me round the tram shed and i have been in love with the Blackpool trams ever since - just hope they don't make it like York railway museum as that to clean and there's no life in the exhibit's.... keep them running.... every time I'm in Blackpool i will be booking on this tour... Also Jane Cole is a great lady and the best thing to have happened to Blackpool Transport - used to be my boss on virgin west coast -

      I can assure you, that if Bryan Lindop has absolutely anything to do with it, which he most certainly currently does, it will not be a "stuffed and mounted" museum in any shape or form.
      He knows that things deteriorate if left static, plus they can earn FAR more out on the track than sat looking shiny in a hall.
      And I totally agree with you about Jane Cole.
      Between Jane and Bryan, and the excellent band of volunteers, in my humble opinion, they could not be in better hands.
      Cheers.

    Hi stephen. I remember the balloon trams in the early 80's. They had a musty smell and the light bulbs inside were very dull. Also remember the hold ups due to the trolleys coming off the high wire. It's videos like this that keep us all young.. once again, another great video👍

    When I visited Blackpool on a 7 day holiday with my brother when I was 15 (brother 13) with no parents to tie us down and we had the freedom of Blackpool I took pictures of the trams in there. As far as I can remember there were a lot more illuminated trams back then (1983) including the Rocket,Ship and Train. I’m fairly sure there was a Phantom of the Opera one.

    I remember so many of these trams from the mid 80s-onwards :) Car #1016 (formerly Glasgow and Paisley) joined the Blackpool Heritage fleet a few years ago for resto - its good that these guys accept classics from across the country to save and preserve for us all to enjoy

    • @dancedecker
      @dancedecker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes and Paisley 16/ Glasgow 1016 ,was shown in the body shop, next to the shot of the skeletal Balloon 704.
      Stephen said it was one of two Lytham trams they had, but in fact the nearer the camera one in blue is the only surviving Lytham car. The body nearer the back wall, was in fact Paisley 16.

    Hi, thanks for the tour. 6:10 - If I'm not mistaken, the machine is a 'tyre turning lathe', used to make sure the tyre is 'round' (no bumps) and the correct profile (so the wheel stays on the track). The machine for changing tyres usually had a ring of heaters (gas or electric) on the floor, but I couldn't see one (or, it could be used to rotate the wheels so you can find the valve to blow the tyre up? ;-) ) Keep up the good work and Merry Christmas to you and your viewers! 🎄

    • @dancedecker
      @dancedecker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are absolutely correct. The gas ring was right next to the lathe, but as it is situated at ground level, it wasn't as obvious as it might have been, but it is definitely there.

    Excellent video Stephen and your kind publicity will add to the interest shown to the Tram Town project and hopefully help it achieve it's noble and worthwhile objectives that bit earlier.
    I am proud to be one of the, so far, few official guides to the depot tour and as such, can highly recommend the tour as a unique way of seeing how it all fits together, as well as letting anyone see the trams "up close and personal."
    This place is absolutely unique in the UK as the ONLY place that held on to.its beloved trams as a first generation tram service and as has now been shown very markedly, was right to do so, now that other towns and cities are bringing them back.
    It is also the ONLY place in the UK where the old trams can run alongside the new, which is a credit to the council for making that a prerequisite to having the new ones arrive.
    If I may just make a couple of points.
    In the body shop, the two tram bodies to the left of the skeletal Balloon car 704, were not both Lytham trams. The first one in blue, 43, most certainly is, but the one behind is an ex Glasgow car 1016, but originally Paisley 16.
    The two are linked, as Bryan who you saw in the video, was made aware of 16's existence, by needing a truck for 43 to be restored. The truck wasn't useful to the project due to 43's low floor construction, but rather than not help save 16, Bryan accepted 16 as a future project.
    The blue Fylde Borough / Seagull Coaches Atlantean bus is historic too, as the very last Atlantean into UK service.
    The silver coloured"Trampower" tram next to it, is a fully privately funded project, that will hopefully be a vanguard for starting to see British built trams again and built very locally too.
    It is set to run on a demonstration line in Preston shortly.
    Whilst it is true that it did suffer a fire, firstly, that's what a prototype is for. Find out any issues.
    However, that said, let's just say that after investigation, things weren't perhaps quite as..erm... straightforward ...as they might have been ....and just leave it at that!!
    Anyway, it should soon be showing it's VERY favourable paces, compared to other currently available foreign built trams.
    I'll let your viewers decide if those two statements might be connected, or not!!
