Absolutely loved my C5. Never had any mechanical issues with it just some small electrical crap. Car took a beating and kept going. With vettes you get more than what you pay for. Absolutely love corvettes

Picked up a 2006 E46 ZCP with only 25k on the clock in Dec 2011. Loved that car, but yes expensive if you take care of it the right way. Sold it for the same price I paid 1.5 years and 25k miles later. Technically profited since I sold back the remainder of my 5 year warranty for $3k that covers a $2500 nav unit, $500+ for a rear axle seal and another $200-300 for a power steering hose. Went looking for a 4 door replacement and would have loved a 2003 E39 M5, but they have insane asking prices if you want a nice sorted one. Almost signed papers on a 2017 CTS-V, but the dealership sold it from under me yet still had me take the 3.5 hour drive down to try and sell me something else. Found out about the CTS VSport and bought a 2016 CPO Premium the next day and love it. 50/50 weight distribution, 4.5-5 sec 0-60, can get into 11's in the 1/4 and turns 14-20mpg driving like you stole it. Plus such a nice interior to be in.
Another thing about the vette, you're only a cam, intake, throttle body, and exhaust away from a reliable 475 hp. And you can do the cam while the engine is in the car. Throw in a set of heads, and you can have 500-525 hp. Add a big radiator, trans cooler, big brakes and tires, anx short throw shifter, and you have a legitimate track day monster for less than 20k. You aren't coming anywhere near that with that level of performance for less than 50-60k. AT LEAST.
Bought an 04 C5 Corvette 6 speed manual about 9 month ago. 45k miles for $13.5k. You can find one with 130k+ miles on it for 10k, but you gotta be serious about buying one. Checking OfferUp, Craigslist, Cargurus etc. like a madman everyday. People are catching on and the prices are going up. Especially manual ones. You WON’T be disappointed. Raced and beat cars from Mustangs to Scat Packs, with a STOCK LS1
I personally favor the 2002 Firebird WS6 manual transmission. It has the same LS1 and gearbox with different ratios of course than the Vette. Also, I own a 2008 Honda Accord V6 6 Speed coupe, and it is definitely underrated from factory for insurance purposes of course. Anyhow, I am able to go 0-60 in around 5ish seconds!!! I smoke everyone like a party J and have a smile doin it!
They are not cheap and from the evo 8 to the evo x, they all do go under 5 secs stock, not including all the different variations of them. everyone knows that.
C5 Corvette all the way no question about it! My dad had a convertible one when it was brand new and it was a freaking blast to drive, especially with the top down driving it up and down parleys canyon in the summer. Also if you get a Z06 version it's pushing 405hp and that's the C5 I would want! The GTO would be my second choice.

I just wanted to leave a comment that contrary to what you stated, well maintained M3's do not burn any more oil than a similar high performance car. In fact my oil light has never come in either of mine, and that's with 8,000 or more intervals between changes. And also most shops have finally converted to using the cheaper liquid-moly substitutes and such in place of the OEM Castrol.

C5 Corvette can also be the 'base' or 'donor car' for some pretty nice "Pretenders"... (smile) And Jim Mero -- the Corvette engineer that worked on suspension and handling for "The 'Ring" -- now offers an Re-Programming for C5 & C6 Corvettes, that makes a Dramatic improvement... So you can take the car to some pretty amazing performance levels... and look GOOD doing it.
Had a 6 speed 97 C5 Vette stock except a K&N air intake. Ran a 2011+ Mustang vert. Actually pulled on him on the Highway. So 412hp vs my 345hp C5. Also a SS Camaro 2010-15 version 6 speed/426hp and had loud pipes of some sort. Highway run .. Dead heat. How can that happen? Vette way underated? . Later 03-04 C5 would be my choice because the earlier versions had some problems. LS engines are great.
There are a couple that were missed, but in fairness, they're not plentiful for under $10k, but can easily be found for around there. One is the Audi RS6, which does it in 4.3 seconds. The other is the early to mid 2000s Mercury Marauder, which, despite having the space and size of a Ford Crown Vic, does it in 4.5 seconds.

if I ever get a C5 corvette, those headlights are getting replaced with C5R style static headlights. Unnecessary weight from the motors and unnecessary drag when dark. There's a good reason the race car didn't have pop up lights. (not to mention in my opinion, pop up light just look tacky.)
I have the 06 GTO. Awesome car! Also have the 02 WS6 T/A with 456rwh. 2 Bad ass Brothers in arms! Can't forget the LS2 powered CTS V. Just bought one for under 10k. A true gentleman's hot rod.
