I personally went for a high mile, 1 owner, unmodified car. I also chose a 6 speed manual due to the reliability (or lack thereof) on the SMG. I wanted to be able to tinker and enjoy it, and saved A TON of money. My car may not be the one that rolls across the Jackson floor for $90K in 30 years, but it will be the car I had so much fun every day in.

I did the same thing, I bought a 155k mile SMG for 10k and everyone thinks I'm crazy because it needs some TLC, but i went under it and through it, checked out almost brand new, so for a couple of grand in cosemetic upgrades that I think should be done anyway, ill be in my childhood dream car and ill spank it on my way to work on the weekends :) I might end up putting in another 5-10k in it to get it to where i want it but i think the market for loved m3s is only going up, so maybe ill see my money back if i ever need to, but never plan on selling it

just helped a buddy of mine rebuild an s54 from the ground up thanks for a broken vanos exhaust hub, all in rebuild was $6500 for a fully refreshed block, all new gaskets, machined head, upgraded vanos system, manual swap from an smg, and sub frame reinforcement. car should run forever after that and his total cost was under 15k. amazing cars at that price

I've owned my 2002 LSB for 3.5 years and never get tired of it. Chose the smg after driving a manual because it seemed exotic. Hated it for about a week until I figured it out. Now anytime I drive a stick shift I can't believe how primitive it feels. Never thought that would happen. The smg might be a little unrefined and awkward at first but once you learn to use the accelerator to make the car change gears smoothly it becomes second nature. My 2¢

A caveat to the rod bearing issue - these need to be replaced roughly every 100k miles. If you're looking at a car, for example, with 110 on the clock that had the recall done at 10k you'll still want to budget 3 grand to replace them. Otherwise, spot on.

  • @deplorabledave1048

If you have an SMG, YOU MUST INSTALL A NEW DUAL MASS CLUTCH.
That was not done with my car. Result: Destroyed drive shaft joints, bearing and guibo.
Rod bearing issue is for ALL MODELS. Even after 2003. Not a recall. It should have been. They are too tight. FIX: wait until the very thick 60W oil is up to a full 190 degrees before revving over 3K RPM. Disregard the lights in the tach. Be much more conservative than the moving red lights in your tach.
VANOS fix: Sort of. Mine cost $900. It was preventative maintenance. Replace external HP oil line. Replace 12 cam gear bolts with upgraded ones from BMW. RED Loctite. New upper cam chain tensioner. New Orings made from VITON. Inspect oil ring and horns of exhaust hub.
You can send the oil ring to a machine shop. They will redrill the cups that hold the exhaust tabs/horns with a closer tolerance than OEM. (less likely to rattle and break) The specs are online. They drill new holes at a 90 degree offset, so you dont have to get any new items.
I SHOULD have sent my solenoid circuit boards in as a core and got upgraded ones for a nominal cost of 200 or $250. I forget. Dr VANOS or Besian. The solder joints tend to CRACK in the OEM versions.
My welders used the best parts (plates) from two kits for reinforcing my sub frame. Kits came from TMS and HPF. Cost was $1000 in labor and materials beyond the cost of the kits. They went beyond what most techs do.
I understand the European company REDDISH has a great kit now.
Maintenance for the SMG: Have the tiny undersized 12V motor REMOVED, cleaned inside and inspected for wear. Mine just needed cleaning from a shit ton of brush dust. This build up will KILL your motor eventually. Bad or worn parts inside? There a few places in the USA that will send you a REBUILT one for cheap if you send yours in as a core.
There is a company in Europe (Burkhart) that makes a thicker SMG fluid than the stock Pentosin. $50 with shipping. This supposed to run the motor and pump LESS and therefore cooler. Need a tech with a computer to actuate the pump tp PURGE the old fluid out.
There is a guy on the M3 Forum selling a carefully crafted SMG pump relocation kit. The pump ends up in a MUCH cooler spot under the hood in the "smugglers box".

@AzraeL with a few caveats. SMG pump motor will go around 75k as will clutch on the manual. Both $1000 jobs. Rear wheel arches almost always rust. Head gasket likely goes between cylinders 5 and 6 at some point above 100k. VANOS likely to have problems at similar mileage and a lot of people get the shell bearings done at the same time especially on pre 2002 cars as these are reported to fail. For the performance it's a lot of bang for your buck.

Best sounding aftermarket exhaust combo. By far. Perhaps not the best performing one, but ZERO rasp and nice Ferrari like wail over 6K RPM.
Megan Racing headers or better. Super Sprint stepped headers are the best but PRICEY.
MUST HAVE these exact parts: Borla Midpipe (close to $1k now!) El Diablo muffler, their standard one, not the race version. Your exhaust will be plenty loud if you get rid of the cats and combine it with the standard El Diablo muffler.
This set up eliminates the cats. That alone will gain you 25-30 RWHP. Car should Dyno at 300+ RWHP. I spent another 1K on a DYNO TUNE which got rid of the gassy smell at idle and gave me incredible throttle response. These mods were the BEST ones I did for the car. Better than coil overs! A good tuner will also lift your top speed limiter from 155 to 175MPH. He should be able to get rid of the CEL that will show when running no cats.

Despite all the preventive mnt that kept eating my wallet (cooling system, satnav reader, front window regulators and internal panel resealing), I still thoroughly enjoyed it and still miss it. Now the time has come to buy a second car to supplement the 4WD and am seriously considering a well maintained E46 M3 (or an F87 M2, which I reckon is the closest thing to an E46)

Drive the SMG like you would the manual like taking your foot off the gas as you shift and it’s great. It’s the perfect manual transmission. You have to replace the clutch in it as well since it’s also a manual transmission and most of the time if it breaks down, it’s a salmon relay which is a few bucks but the dealer will say it’s the pump to get money out of you.

@@GlennsCarCollection $7 K is pretty expensive . OTH that price is a good argument for making a lower offer on an E46 with SMG . I guess I was encouraged by the Wheeler Dealer episode to learn that a conversion to a manual is simple from a technical standpoint. If I found a nice one in my area with an SMG , I would not be discouraged from buying it, IF the seller was very flexible on the price.

To anyone buying an E46 M3 the rod bearings recall means nothing you still need to get them done once the car nears 100k I own a 2004 E46 M3 so had updated bearings full dealer history only 3 owners guess what? I don’t the rod bearings @ 100k I go so so lucky get them done the recall doesn’t stop them wearing. Also the HG wasn’t mentioned in this vid which are prone to failing on 100k plus cars causes pinking sound. Also the vid talks about the bolts failing for the subframe it’s actually the RACP or boot floor the spot welds fail not bolts check your subframe by checking the rear left subframe mount make sure you wipe the chassis dirt hair cracks can be seen then. People say it’s only coupes & SMG’s that crack it’s not it’s all of them coupes,SMG’s, convertible, Manuals they all crack. The Vanos issues are solved by buying Beisan oil disc with tighter tolerances on the oil disc holes as stops the Vanos hub rattle and stops the tabs snapping. Deffo keep aside a good few £k for preventative maintenance and your be rewarded by one of the best drivers experience ever. Remember these cars were £50k+ cars (in the UK) the parts are still stupid expensive 👍🏻

@@GlennsCarCollection I had the same question Dan Boyle did. I absolutely LOVE the E46 M3 and thinks it's the nicest body style they've made. I looked into getting one about 2 years ago with the help of some encouragement from my M3-addict business partner and I am looking again. After doing some initial research 2 years ago, I went with a newer 2012 BMW 328 xdrive instead b/c of all the problems I read about particularly the sub frame cracking which even my partner admitted happened to one of his past BMWs. I simply can not justify paying the reasonable 10-12K for a nice E46 M3 whose sub frame may be cracked or might crack as I think that is an unacceptable trait to have to tolerate from a luxury car brand. Again, I love BMWs but I'm not delusional either and don't want a money pit. I also didn't like the fact that almost all of the used examples I found (and there are PLENTY out there for sale) had 5+ owners which made me leery and worried that something about them didn't make owners want to keep them for very long. I assumed that was because of the high cost of repairs if not the potential for major structural issues like frame cracks. So there's my dilemma preventing from pulling the trigger but I do love my 328 xdrive though!!

There is no "subframe fix." The welding kits are only a prevention measure. If used as a repair, the weld in plates, all of them, act as a band aid, slowing down the inevitable doom of further cracking... It's the spot welds, all over the rear carrier panel that are the problems. ALL of them. That said, its MOST IMPORTANT to know if the subframe has plates installed, and if they were installed before cracking showed up, or after. If after, don't buy the car as the problem will return sooner than later.
Why do you think these cars range in price is so dramatic, from $8k - $30k. A 2004 - 2006 manual trans with under 150k miles would be the only place to start looking for a good one

    • @Texas_Cruiser

    • @JohnFaire
      @JohnFaire 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Texas_Cruiser nope, the reinforced unibody has nothing to do with how the differential stresses the rear panels, which pulls and tears out the spot welds, then floor panel tearing occurs. Happens on all e46s, even convertibles.

I might be crazy cause I bought my m3 lsb manual for 11k cash without even looking at the engine bay, I looked at the trunk for cracks but I didn’t even look hard. Basically I was there with the owner for only 20 minutes. Gave him the cash he gave me the keys and papers signed then drove back home 100 miles away.
It’s crazy cause I didn’t looked at the engine, what if it was only a 330 with m3 badging, the car wasn’t even original lsb it was grey. All in my mind was get the car then go home. Shoot I’ll never be doing that ever again. Not to mention I saw it on Craigslist with no engine bay pictures.

Why rod bearings go out so fast in these cars:
    1. Idiots do not warm enough engine before they start revving.
    2. revving those engines alot while not moving.
    3. too long oil service intervals and WRONG oils
    4. Winter usage without warm place to store this car
if you dont have warm place to store e46 m3 and its +2 celsius ( about 35F ) or colder outside, USE engine heater that warms your OIL ( 10w-60 is very thick oil... specially if its cold outside )
So i would change those rod bearings always after buying e46 m3 IF i couldnt be 100% sure how that car have been serviced and USED.

plantedrabbit3 no it’s not it’s 13,999 and causes accelerated spurving bearing failure and puts stress on the smg subframe which along with the bearing problems is sure to lead to side fumbling of the wayneshaft, almost guaranteeing all 6 of the hydrocoptic marzlevanes are shredded and the logarithmic casing will burst and the prefabulated amulite baseplate will be unable to hold the force any longer and boom, a little sidefumbling caused by a trans. Swap renders the entire turbo-encabulator unit, and everything driven by its shaft, metal soup, which hopefully you’re going slow enough to catch because s54’s will eat that soup if given the chance 77% of the time, as much as 90% of cases if the marzlevanes indeed vaporize
It’s just not worth it, best to stay away from smg cars unless you’re familiar with them and don’t mind them/their costs etc.
