Hello again Mary Mansfield 👋 Well what can I say about your lastest video? It was WONDERFUL!!!!!! with a lovely host as usual 😃 Nice views, lovely countryside and a winter's walk are the best time to get yourself out and about. Woodhead Railway Tunnels are one of the places that I've always wanted to visit, as I've got a great interest in the history of that Railway line. If you ever visit Sheffield, where the railway started, there's still part of the railway there, and some of the rail track too, which is still used today by mainline locos up to the steel works. The Station at Sheffield was called Sheffield Victoria and the station hotel is still there today too, think it's a premier Inn or something like that now? I remember watching a Railway program a while ago, where the presenter called (Rob Bell) walked the whole route from Sheffield to Hadfield and was really interesting to watch. A good mate of mine tells me that he used to ride the trains along the Woodhead route to Manchester when he was younger, and used to go train spotting at Pennistone station to spot the old electric locos class 76 and 77 locos. Wish I'd of been around in those days too 😃 One day I'd really love to visit the Woodhead tunnels, but sadly due to me not having transport, I'm not able to get there, but have been told that I can get a bus from Sheffield, which will take me to the other side at Dunford Bridge, so at least I'll be able to visit at least one part of the Woodhead tunnels 😀 failing that, I'd have to get a train to Hadfield, and if I'm feeling brave? Lol walk it to the tunnels from there one day, it's just such a great shame that the people picked the Hope Valley Line instead of the Woodhead line. Keep up the good work Mary, as I really enjoyed watching every minute of the video, it truly was straight up my street 😃 thank you for doing a video which I have a great interest in too, it was fantastic!!!!!! 100 out of 100 Mary 😀😀 On another note, you mentioned that village on the route, about it being flooded to make a dam, it reminds me of the same thing that happened at Derwent, the same thing happened there too, and for some time, before they blew it up, people at one time used to be able to see the old church spire from the old village, sticking out of the water, just a bit like the old chimney that you mentioned. Yes once again, such a lovely video Mary. It was just a nice video to watch this evening after a really long walk myself and a good mate of mine did today. It was a walk around a place called Tapton House Park, which is just a ten minute walk from Chesterfield town centre and has a lovely views of the surrounding area and and even saw my house too from above lol 😆 Tapton House in Chesterfield, was once lived in by one of my heroes of Railway history, Mr George Stevenson, who lived there for a short while, when he was building the Midland Railway line through the area. Anyway, Tapton House Park, has some lovely garden's, plenty of places to sit down and have a spot of lunch like myself and my mate did today, it has a large golf course, a fishing pond, play area for the kids, a large wooded area walk too, and it's a great little place to explore and escape from the hussle and bussle of the town centre. And to forget everything that is going on in the world at the moment sadly. Well worth a visit, and explore. Anyway looking forward to your next upload on TH-cam. All the best Stay Safe and Keep Well. And almost forgot to say. HAPPY EASTER to you both 😊 From. Mike (Devon Boy)
Here's hoping that you two will be able to do more multi-day hikes as England opens up after COVID-19. The Cleveland Way videos were really fun (and kudos for handling the prickly weather).
Thanks so much John - we are currently researching our planned adventures for this year!! Hoping everything goes as planned to open up in the next few months 🤞
Nothing better than a Mary Mansfield video on a Sunday evening. Your PCT videos are just great, I may have watched them all. Mary...... a down to earth woman that does great things.
Another really delightful video, with great scenery. These old railroad beds make great trails because of the reasonably flat grades. In the U.S., we have several of these, and there is a non-profit group, called the Rails to Trails Conservancy, that actively works to promote redevelopment of old rail lines into trails. Parts of this video also reminded me of the C&O Canal towpath trail, which runs along the Potomac River Valley in Maryland. It was a canal (no longer working and filled in along some places) that enabled shipping up through the Appalachian Mountains (the Potomac was not navigable above Washington DC due to water falls). Today you can hike or bicycle on it up to something like 200 miles from DC up into the mountains. A small section of it makes up part of the Appalachian Trail. I think it is great to give these old industrial routes new lives as ways for people to connect with nature.
Wonderful trail. 👍. Happy Springtime ☺️! 🌸🌺. What lovely bird songs. 💕. I'm looking at seven inches of snow (so far 😱) here in Colorado , so to see an early spring day there, though cold, is so nice.
A beautiful trail. The rail on the left side, at the beginning looked so classic. Those tunnels are kool. I wonder if the local Civil Defense people have considered them for shelters? Many of our old rail beds were converted to trails in the 1990s but there is always the possibility of bringing back light rail. I was inspecting a culvert about 20 years ago when a huge crayfish, about 8" long, came out. It turned out that they were common on that stream. Thanks for taking us along. BTW in CT we say: "if you don't like the weather, wait a minute, it will change". This afternoon, we are having wind, snow flurries, and then sun, then it repeats. Good Luck, Rick
MARY…I want to let you know that I’ve been watching your PCT videos. I started at #1 and now up to #100!. What an adventure you had and I want to thank you on your recordings! I think it’s the best record for hiking the PCT. Your decision to tackle the HIGH SIERRA was quite brave! Even though you are done with the PCT, I was worried about you going alone at the beginning . When you teamed up later, I felt relieved. YOU ARE NOW AN EXPERT ON THE PCH! Love ya!
What a lovely walk and great information Mary. Your smile always brightens the day! Love the birds singing, especially the little robin!! I miss England so much and hope to be back soon 💚
Mary, I'm starting to subscribe to this year's PCT vloggers and a number of them have commented that they used your videos (amongst others) for their training. Seems like you've helped other hikers!
really enjoyed the video Mary can,t think how many times i walked this route always great to explore this area so many walks around this area you can,t go wrong thank you Mary for a lovely video.
As someone who is a permanent wheelchair user is good to hear you describe how accessible the trail is.....I hope it’s something you continue doing in all your walks videos from now on.....👍🏻
That means so much to me FreeToWheel, thank you for the feedback and I will be sure to continue to do so 😊 If you are from the UK, the Monsal Trail hike I did is also perfect for you!
great vid great info, i will be up there when the days longer, i live in nottingham so quite a drive, glad your staying local and following the rules, unlike some others i could mention.
Thanks Graham👍 Yes it has been difficult watching others travel for hikes when we are trying to do as we should and stay at home and in our local area.
@@MarysOutdoorAdventures glad some one agrees with me, i will be up curber edge on the 29th when we allowed to travel, nice easy wander to break myself in steady 😂
@@grahambarker8129 Sounds perfect! It is a lovely area. I will be heading out myself on the 29th to leave the area for a hike...so excited 😂 Here's hoping it will be a nice day, but I bet even if it is raining it'll still feel wonderful.
How long does winter last in Europe Mary ? Hello. I felt firmness in his walk. Liguei a legenda, agora entendi: 40 % da água para Manchester. Ave Maria essa água deve estar muito, muito gelada
Absolutely loved this video, I have walked along this trail most weeks for 40+ years, and watching this video I have learned new things. I have an idea for a collaboration, would you be interested?
welcome to Blitzkrieg valley. Don't forget your ear defenders! Guns, trucks, planes and bloody loud motorbikes. And keep your head down when you near the shooting lodge at Woodhead. There's a couple of scumbag game keepers that don't give a shiny shite for public safety.
It's not as easy as it sounds unfortunately. Not only do I not have all the footage, but to delete them all off TH-cam and redo them is an awful lot of work - plus everything would be out of sync and all the comments/replies/views etc would be lost. Sorry you felt the music took away from the challenge though - a lot of the time I added music so viewers didn't have to put up with wind noise from the microphones.

Lovely video with tons of history to bring it even more alive. Thank you so much. Blessings
Glad you enjoyed it Betty - thank you!
Thank you, Mary. Lovely walk, and can I say I really appreciate the history lesson, too. 🙂👍

Thank you Tom - yes it is certainly here now!
Hi Mary! I walked this trail yesterday. Thanks for sharing
Hope you had a great time - it's lovely isn't it!

I noted some wrong place names in the index points, as follows..Tour Side is Torside, and Rail House is Valehouse.
They were done automatically by TH-cam - I'll see if I can turn them off thanks!

Mary... I have a suggestion for your HIGH SIERRA VIDEOS.....Remove your music while hiking. It takes away from the challenge through the Sierra's!
