I actually grew up with the PC version. While I do prefer the control of the PS1 version, I personally think that the PC version has not only better graphics, but also better voice acting. (mainly from the cops) One thing I think is stupid about the PS1 version is that the music does not play in 2 player split screen mode. The PC version never did that, so I was bummed out when I couldn't hear that badass soundtrack in 2 player split screen mode of the PS1 version. So in the end, I prefer the PC version just a little more, but I still agree that the PS1 version is great. (especially since it's the only version I can play nowadays)
@Wadsy I agree with the glue/magnet thing, is the only negative point i have with the driving on PC (practically the only negative point i have with this game), other than that, i prefer the cars being very lightweighty.
I totally agree with that! I love NFSIII in pc (the music, the graphs...) but certainly the feeling of being driving an actual car is where PSX wins by far! Unless anyone knows any Patch in 2022 for NFSIII ;) (I really love the music of this!)
I wish the PC version of this and especially High Stakes were just higher resolution versions of the PSX games. I played both versions of both pretty extensively growing up, and I hated how the PC versions ran smoother and at higher res but the art direction and gameplay was so much worse.
Same for Porsche Unleashed, I prefer the Playstation version (though it has some glaring issues). It feels like it has more "personality" and made with production value. It also ages okay (as long as you are playing it as intended : PS + CRT tv), unlike the PC version which feels like low budget/crowd funded project by today standards. High Stakes for PS has better art direction (more personality), but the frame rate is atrocious, which makes it almost impossible to complete thw game considering the unforgiving difficulty at the later stages. The physics of PS version is pure arcade while the PC version feels like a primitive attempt to simulate realistic car handling. As far as graphics are concern, PC High Stakes' feels barren and drab because it removes some of the track items that add personality. The high res (but low poly - low texture graphics) actually makes it looks artificial-looking by today standard. PS "grainy" graphics create some kind of natural "texture" and kinda hides it's low polygon environment.
For what i read there was going to be even more tracks that are listen in the files in the PC version alongside the PS1 content. TCRF really helps with this old games.
You're using the High Cam for the PC version, but this camera is not very good. You had to use the Roof Cam (similar to camera of the PSX version) or the Heli Cam (default camera of the PC version), it can be changed in the settings of the game. The High Cam is just a static version of the Heli Cam, and it looks very weird. It would be nice to see a comparison when Lamborghini Diablo SV is used. It is the main car of the game, it was placed on the box with CD of this game =)
Why i vastly prefer the PC version. -Controls and physics are notably inferior. The car take a lot to steer and every time you hit with something (even if you crash at very low speed with something like a car from behind), you do a flip in mid air, and cops not matter what car you use always are faster than you even a police Chevrolet Corvette can be faster than a CLK-GTR. And some cars with high handling when you start to driving are very sensitive to turning, so you have to be careful. For this reasons, even the beginner difficult is so frustrating, both pursuit or normal races. -You cannot save in knockout mode -Rubberbanding -Framerate drops and pixelated graphics -Something that i really hate is that the number of tickets that you can recieved in a pursuit dont depend on the number of laps, but the amount of time you survive without being arrest. You can be arrest with 1 ticket if you dont dodge for example an spike strip, and spike strips in this version are so long, in some tracks like hometown the spike strip can be same lenght as the track. Without counting that you can be arrest so easily, even if you drive at 80 km/h. Something that i noticed btw is that in the PC version if you dont go to high speed you cannot be arrested, while in the PS1 version even if you dont do something illegal, the cops would try to arrest you. -Since PS1 uses memory cards, the amount of ghosts you can save per track are much less than the PC version. -No constant police radio -You cannot customize the stats of your car -No custom colours -You cannot be a police -Split screen mode doesnt have music and is too laggy. Obviously, also not online mode. -Much less cars. -You dont have the interior view of the car (both gameplay and main menu) -You cannot choose or listen the soundtrack of the game. -Less ways to change the UI While a lot of these flaws they also apply to NFS4, at least NFS4 on PS1 has much better driving and much more new content. Both PS1 and PC are close contenders imo, while NSF3 on PS1 feels like a beta version. PC: 10/10 PS1: 6/10
Hey VC. Ur comparision is so on point.Actually, I just recently made a video analysising NFS3 HP (PC) and I was hoping to find resources like the one you did. A shame that I missed the opportunity to include your awesome work! One interesting thing is that I noticed your PC version got some extra animation in the menu, like you got car names flying all around which mine failed to display for some reason. Anyway, great video. You're welcome to check my video and be sure to leave any suggestion if you have. cheers!
This could be a second part of the comment i wrote a year before, but i dont count the simulation mode as a positive in this version since it feels very rushed. AI drives almost the same as arcade mode so you are basically putting a terrible handicap to your car, and since knockout mode still uses the default settings of the car is impossible to win, especially with the Jaguar and Mercedes since they use by default racing tires and raining on simulation mode makes this cars oversteer even at 20 kmh and slows down A LOT. Literally unplayable. Not surprise that PC version of NFS3 and High Stakes on PS1 decided to remove the handling selection. I also dont count as a positive anymore (despite i defended this a lot in the past) the extra tracks since they feel very unfinished and cannot even be race with AI drivers (although Nazca C2 is a car i love). After all NFS3 on PS1 is a good game, but the technical limitations of the console alongside the fact that is the first version of the game makes this feel like a prototype of what the PC version would be. That and also EA Canada doesnt cut corners in the right places, lol.
Although pc is smoother, I prefer the ps1 graphics. It has a gritty charm about it and like others have said, doesn't look like the scenario is moving rather than the car. Also looks like the backgrounds are better
Prefiro Play1. Otimo video!!
I agree reflections (or more like simulated reflections) on PS1 looks great, but they cant just compare to PC since that version has almost true reflections that changes according to the place of the track you are, while on PS1 is almost the same and the car doesnt reflect objects of the enviroment.
Funny enough the PC and PS1 versions have completely different physics.. The PS1 is way more fun to play. I'm lazy to Google about it, but if I'm not wrong, they were developed by different EA divisions in different countries. Again if I'm not wrong the ps1 version was made by EA Canada, which did an amazing job imo! One of my fav racing games ever!
All PC versions 1, 2, 3 are so far from ps1. 2 and 3 has 3dfx glide, force feedback, LAN support etc. PC 3dfx cannot be compared with ps1. They are from the same time but from different generations. Do you understand me?
The cars on the PC barely seem to move on their suspension. And I will be in the minority, but unless the graphics are way up to PS3 standards, I'd rather look at the lower resolution, lower poly versions of the games, usually. My mind can fill in the details, better than what's happening here, for the pc. And low fi is awesome.
I think it really depends on what you played back in the day. I stopped getting consoles at that time because "PS1 can't run Quake therefore it sucks" (my 90's mindset), and was really mindblown by those voodoo3 early 3d accelerated games. NFS3, Unreal Tournament, etc.
Lighting effects were the main component missing in the second game for pc. Those are now present, so the choice is obvious. But what kind of PS specs did you need to hit those high framerates? Almost anything can do that now, but the 90s were not "these days!"
I had no idea these games were different!! I was an N64 kid (love Beetle Adventure racing), but a new family PC in 99 meant I got NFS3 then 4 and 5 in the months after. I LOVED them and always assumed the PS1 was just a direct port with worse graphics.
Back when this game was released, I had the PS version - nowadays (yes, nowadays) I am playing the PC version still. But I gotta admit that personally, I prefer the PS version's overall hud.
My dad and my uncle played the PS1 version religiously. I know my dad has probably set the world record on Hometown with the El Nino on the PS1. 0:56:84.
I always wondered ever since a kid playing this, was there an el nino concept car created? and if not, why not? it looked so sick from the design, obv the fastest and best car in the game, i remember first unlocking it and driving it and being in awe.
I don't mind the design of the pc version, 1st time i've seen it here actually didn't even know they changed it :O... but i got used to the ps1, hard to decide, i don't mind the ps1 look either from the back.
Compared to most cars esp in ps1, it actually looked curved lol.

You're right. I only own the PS1 Version of the Games because they don't running on Windows 10. I wish i could playing the PC Versions, they looks so much better but i can't.

PS1 had better crash and physics. plus it can be played in HD on an emulator. I don't care if the PC version looks better. gameplay is the best on psx and it was more challenging.
@@sebastiankulche I never said ps1 was better? If anything, I said PC was better in this comment, just that I found ps1 charming. also this is a 2 year old comment lol
False. The tracks are the same. The car used here is El Nino and has different stats on both versions. PS1 version El Nino is faster and that's why it seems the track is shorter.
Visually, the PC version wins, no contest. Although I could do without the floaty visualization. But gameplay wise, it was better on PSX. Cars did actually control more smoothly on there and IMO the environments didn’t look terrible. I’m surprised they had two separate interfaces and intros, though. Wish that wasn’t a thing.
For interface, I prefer PSX version, the PC version's interface is just a boring box on top of your screen and lot's of texts, PSX is minimalist but still giving you the amount of information like in PC.
I prefer much more the PC version gameplay. In PS1 the cars tend to flip very easily and is very hard to turn. In PC you can do instantly tight turns releasing the accelerator or with the brake. And the enviroments doesnt look pixelated on PC, so why it look terrible?
@Wadsy Yeah, thats true, but still there´s specific turns where you have to be so precise and one mistake can cost you all of the race. There´s also parts where if you play pursuit mode, when doing sharp turns the police can arrest you even if i drive slowly just for a moment. Contrary to the PC version you are arrested inmediately if you reach a certain speed, and i remember one time being arrested just for going to 90-100 kmh, wtf?! Where in PC you have to go like 40-50 and you have a few seconds to recover. In PS1 i generally use Nazca C2 or the Jaguar XJR-15 since i think they are the cars with the best handling.
@Wadsy Is ok if you like it, but is still very unfair and strange, especially in 8 laps races, just cmoc, why you would stop magically at so high speed? In terms of realism it doesnt make much sense.
This comparison is not very good. Why do you have a different camera settings on the PC version? This type of camera view is connected to the car, so do not feel the movement of the chassis. Therefore feels like slipping on the road.
As much as i grew up with PlayStation 1 and 2 games, i gotta choose the PC cause it got better graphic and you could be the cop on there. You can on the PS1 but you gotta get a gameshark code and the cops still chase you even when your driving a COP CAR.
Cant believe so many people are defending the ps1 on this. I get that if thats all you had you were probably use to it but come on, if you sat in front of a pc after playing nfs on your playstation and seen that left screen would the ps1 version even be in your mind? I didn't think so.

Mikołaj Górski I agree. I've tried both versions of the game and the PC version is without a doubt terrible. The PlayStation version is and will forever be the best
Framerate and textures the PC obviously wins hand down. But the PS1 holds it's own against the more powerful system. Colors look more vibrant and the way the car looks and reacts, although rough and rugged, feels more realistic imo.
acdgui So, we're pretty much comparing a PS1 to an ... original Xbox (give or take)? See, that's my problem here. High Stakes had more content, yet somehow looked worse graphically than it's predecessor, despite using the same engine!
I disagree. PC for me looks and plays better, and you have much more content and thats a fact.
Fun Fact: PS1 actually had some earlier development content stashed in the files, including the second Empire City track missing from the PC version
For what i read there was going to be even more tracks that are listen in the files in the PC version alongside the PS1 content.
TCRF really helps with this old games.
I like the PC version better and I would play it with the highest audio and video settings back in those days.
Not bad considering the PS1 hardware.
PC version have better grafics, but i think PS version have a better gameplay... i love the PS version hud...
PS1 veraion can't even play as cops, which was the entire point of the game.
"PS version have better gameplay"
Explain yourself please.
I'm also wondering why the same camera angle for each game wasn't used. NFS 3 PC has a closer view forsure
Aaahh the good old racing game hill in the background. Dancing from left to right..
-You cannot save in knockout mode
-Rubberbanding
-Framerate drops and pixelated graphics
-Something that i really hate is that the number of tickets that you can recieved in a pursuit dont depend on the number of laps, but the amount of time you survive without being arrest.
-No constant police radio
-You cannot customize the stats of your car
-No custom colours
-You cannot be a police
-Split screen mode doesnt have music and is too laggy. Obviously, also not online mode.
-Much less cars.
-You dont have the interior view of the car (both gameplay and main menu)
-You cannot choose or listen the soundtrack of the game.
-Less ways to change the UI
While a lot of these flaws they also apply to NFS4, at least NFS4 on PS1 has much better driving and much more new content. Both PS1 and PC are close contenders imo, while NSF3 on PS1 feels like a beta version.
PC: 10/10
PS1: 6/10
The PlayStation version is forever the best!
Used to play this game every single day after school... so many memories
i was kinda expecting it from ps1 but lets be real..in 1995 when ps1 came out...that was every kid's dream.
Oh I remember this game, was one of the first games I played back when I got my first PC with a very nice VooDoo3 card :)
Although pc is smoother, I prefer the ps1 graphics. It has a gritty charm about it and like others have said, doesn't look like the scenario is moving rather than the car. Also looks like the backgrounds are better

Prefiro Play1. Otimo video!!
pc possui o cockpit
ps1, they really knew how to shade cars since grand tursmo or at last make that image. reflections on cars was really a thing back then.
3dfx made this game so smooth on my pc ...
All PC versions 1, 2, 3 are so far from ps1. 2 and 3 has 3dfx glide, force feedback, LAN support etc. PC 3dfx cannot be compared with ps1. They are from the same time but from different generations. Do you understand me?
I'm 45 I bought this game new and been a fan now 20 plus years and play with my son
Well said man, hats off 👍🏻
I think it really depends on what you played back in the day.
I think NFS3 is the game I' ve played for the lomgest. You know a game is well made if you can play it over and over again
Use the Heli cam. Low and High on PC are locked behind the car and it looks ugly.
all we know for sure is: the el nino handles like shit
Joguei muito a versão do PSX, jogo bom demais.
I had this on console and to me it looked great at the time. Now looking back... not so much. The graphics and frame rate on PC look lovely.
Back when this game was released, I had the PS version - nowadays (yes, nowadays) I am playing the PC version still. But I gotta admit that personally, I prefer the PS version's overall hud.
You can have a similar hud in PC by changing it in the options.
Sopa dU macaco Umma delicia XDXDDDD
PC has always been the master race
It's unbelievable what PS1 was capable of with THAT HW! Not really fair to compare it with a '98 PC with 3D card, though.
Same as with Driver1, keep in mind from what year ps1 hardware is!
I wish nfs 3 will be remade someday
Compared to most cars esp in ps1, it actually looked curved lol.
salve maaaanooo!
esse eu tenho muita moral pra avaliar... é o meu need preferido...
eu tenho do pc e do ps (ambos originais)...
Best intros in racing game history.
Odd, El Nino on my NFS game was "SPOILT", the code I mean.
That is correct. Punch that in and every car is unlocked. It works in both PAL and NTSC versions.
Hello, my name is Sergio Luiz and I downloaded the version for Windows 10
But they have a problem of not being able to configure the controls
Correctly, can you help me here with configuring the control?
I can't understand how few people think the PSX release is better.
It looks much worse compared, has much less visual effects and specials also you can't be a Cop on PSX.
The PC release has much better graphics and the UI is great and easy to get through, the environments look better.
You're right. I only own the PS1 Version of the Games because they don't running on Windows 10. I wish i could playing the PC Versions, they looks so much better but i can't.
@@all-stargamer3333 I managed to get it running on Windows 10 years ago and still works, there's a fix on the internet.

I think Hometown/Country Woods and Atlantica/Aquatica look vastly prettier on PS1, but the others PC (especially Rocky Pass/Summit).
Nostalgia. Nothing more, nothing else.
PS1 had better crash and physics. plus it can be played in HD on an emulator.
I don't care if the PC version looks better. gameplay is the best on psx and it was more challenging.
Better physics my ass, especially when i being constantly flip over mid air. And instead of being challenging is unfair because of the rubberbanding.
PS1 version runs like at 10 fps in pursuit mode and its very monotonous to play due to having only 8 cars. So PC wins to me.
Watching this as i listen to the soundtrack
Sure, the pc version looks TONS better than the ps1 version, but the latter has some sort of charm to how it looks. Personally, PS1 wins for me.
That doesnt make it better.
@@sebastiankulche I never said ps1 was better? If anything, I said PC was better in this comment, just that I found ps1 charming. also this is a 2 year old comment lol
PC version almost looks like a PS2 port.
It was one of the best looking games of 1998, so impressive for its time along Half Life, Gran Turismo and Crash 3.
The PC looks like it has longer tracks and better graphics.
False. The tracks are the same. The car used here is El Nino and has different stats on both versions. PS1 version El Nino is faster and that's why it seems the track is shorter.

PC version is better but PS1 is more nostalgic
Visually, the PC version wins, no contest. Although I could do without the floaty visualization. But gameplay wise, it was better on PSX. Cars did actually control more smoothly on there and IMO the environments didn’t look terrible.
I’m surprised they had two separate interfaces and intros, though. Wish that wasn’t a thing.
For interface, I prefer PSX version, the PC version's interface is just a boring box on top of your screen and lot's of texts, PSX is minimalist but still giving you the amount of information like in PC.
@@HyperVanilo You can change the UI in PC and make it much more simpler.
Tremendous difference at the time. They where different worlds.
As much as i grew up with PlayStation 1 and 2 games, i gotta choose the PC cause it got better graphic and you could be the cop on there. You can on the PS1 but you gotta get a gameshark code and the cops still chase you even when your driving a COP CAR.

PC, of course!! I preferd, the best Graphics, still PC, the best for me for Gameplay, sorry;-)
Cant believe so many people are defending the ps1 on this. I get that if thats all you had you were probably use to it but come on, if you sat in front of a pc after playing nfs on your playstation and seen that left screen would the ps1 version even be in your mind? I didn't think so.

nice for ps1. I think you have to run pc-version on the hardware with cost of 1998 comparable with playstation. Take a look huh
