- Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit is the third title in the Need for Speed series. In Japan, it is called Over Drivin' III: Hot Pursuit, and in France, Need for Speed III: Poursuite Infernale.
The game was released for PC and PlayStation in March 25th, 1998, with each consisting of slightly different content. Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 was released in 2002 as a spiritual successor with another released in 2010 by Criterion Games as Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (2010).
There are three race modes players can select, although Knockout and Tournament mode are only playable as race series that take place in every race course of the title. Additionally, they can only have their difficulty altered. Players earn higher rewards for completing and winning events on higher difficulties on these modes.
Knockout
The last positioned racer is eliminated after each event. The last knockout race consists of a duel between the two finalists.
Single Race
Each race track is fully customisable allowing players to change daylight settings, traffic amount, the numbers of opponents (1 to 7), difficulty (beginner or expert), weather and have the option to drive in a mirrored version of the circuit.
Tournament
Similar to Knockout, although players will not be eliminated after each race. Each participant earns points based on their finishing position at the end of the race. The racer with the most points by the end of the last race wins the tournament.
Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit is the first game in the series to let players drive police cars (PC only) and chase racers. The police force in this game uses tactics such as ramming the racers, Roadblocks and Spike Strips. Similar to Knockout and Tournament mode, players will receive rewards upon completing a Hot Pursuit race on every race course as a racer and cop.
Any racer including AI drivers will receive a warning if they are caught by the police. Earning too many warnings will cause the racer to be arrested and allow their opponent to win the event.
Players taking on the role of a cop have the primary task of busting every racer within a race. AI drivers are only allowed to earn a single warning by the police before being busted.
The car list of Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit includes a selection of American, Australian and European sports cars.
Almost every car in the title has a Showcase option in which players can view real-life information, pictures and a 360° interior view of the real life vehicle.
It is also possible to fine-tune a vehicle's performance as well as compare every car via in-game performance regardless of class.

@@abrahammartinez3603 No that was in the PS1 version, because there was no police radio in the consoll version. Thats why i prefered the pc version, since we could listen too the cops planning etc spikes roadblocks, plus if we got caught we got those funny lines.
PS1 version cops voices was better imho. "Busted" text instead "Ticketed". Also "Next time is jail time".

hahahhahha didn't think of that until you said it. All the lines the police used to say. There were like 4 or 5 things they'd say and that was it, but "this is your final warning. Next time you'll be riding with me." was a classic. Didn't they also say something like, "I'm gonna assume your pedal got stuck and give you a warning" or something like that?
This game was and is still today one of my favourite NFS game of all time, its so sad that todays games is all about tuning customazion Nos and all that crap. These kids today have no idea how awsome NFS was in the 90s and that is sad.

Yeah, i wish EA Canada could go back too making NFS again. I have losted the faith i had in Ghost Games. It seems like they are more interesting in making those Undergroundish NFS games. Just look at NFS 2015 it was utter rubbish, i dont know about you man but we OldschoolNFS gamers should came together and convince EA too start make a real NFS without tuning NOS etc closed tracks Hot Pursuit mode etc etc. We dont need this open world games, dont get me wrong it can be fun but at same time boring too:O

NFS porsche unleashed AKA 2000 was the last survivor of the NFS series , after this edition the series tend to corrupt and died quickly
@Darth Raider We where talking about how boring NFS is nowadays, because it is about boring open worlds. We loved when NFS was about stunning scenary on closed tracks, not fast and furious shit in a urban mainstreem city.

Fun facts: That yellow Lamborghini Diablo in the opening scene (AP143ME italian plate) was sold and exported in Sweden in 2003. It's still in Sweden with ~6500 miles on the clock.
I used to play this game with my little sister on our old computer. We would sit next to each other using the same keyboard. I am now 28 and every time I watch gameplay of this game, I feel a huge rush of emotions. I wish games today would give me the same feeling. Only time will tell.

I wish they would Just remaster this game. Make it all updated with the Most Wanted style graphics, but keep the track style and with static 5-6 or so cops, with maybe a helicopter that tracks you, but doesn't try to kill you etc. Just how simple say this game or High Stakes was. And re-master it with graphics.
This or some developer could make a retro racing game in the style of this game. No emphasis on tuning, no night time only, no open world - only a dozen of nice, diverse tracks with luxurious (oldschool) sports cars and the police. Would be a real treat. One day...
I probably lost good part of my youth playing this game. The graphs were absolutely incredible for that period (1998) and was fun.

That intro represents perfectly the path racing games wanted to follow in the late 90s and early 2000s, all about being cool and extreme, and trying to get as far from the family friendly image as possible, similar to the Tony Hawk pro skater games and also the all those SEGA commercials back when the console war was between Sega an Nintendo

Oh, man the nostalgia. Hometown was one of my favorite tracks too because it reminds me a lot of where I grew up in rural eastern Pennsylvania. It felt I was driving a supercar around the back roads and farms and through the covered bridges and little old towns near my house. Now a days I'm pretty sure it was modeled after New England but with Playstation graphics and an active 10 year old imagination it worked for me haha
I know that feeling. Over here, where I'm from (Amsterdam, Europe) we don't have roads like that. Our roads are really boring (traffic jams, all day every day). But there's a game called A2 Racer (it's on my channel aswel) from the same era, a lower budget production ofc. Cause the gaming industry wasn't as big as it is now 20 years later. And that game is based on our cities like Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam and our highways :)

This was the first game I ever played as a kid on my dad’s computer, awesome memories. My other favorite was Porsche unleashed.
Best "map" ever. It truly is Home town. Such a strong atmosphere here. Wish there were a modern re-make for this. I would buy it just to drive once more in my home town.

When I used to play this many years ago (first ever NFS game) I would get so scared of those police sirens as they got closer. Looking back it was one of the most creative and quality games made.
I have memories of playing this game before I even knew how to read... Id just pick the top option every time because that normally brought me to a race lol. Too bad it doesnt seem like the NFS series will return to its former glory any time soon...

Just started playing FH5 and I used my car voucher on the Mclaren F1 just because it made me think of this game and that car and the Diablo were the beasts in this game. Such good memories of playing this game with my friend

The Jaguar XJR-15 returns in FH5. The last time that car was in a racing game was this one.
Funny how you lead the police on a multi-car ramming chase, spikestrips and roadblocks and all, and all they give you is a ticket.

On our way home from school me and my buddies would always stop at this computer shop which had this game playing on display. The computer was way more powerful than anything else we had and the graphics looked amazing at the time.
Computer probably had like 200mb of RAM.

I think I played this game more than any game, while growing up. I could have played it in my sleep. One of my all time favorite games and I STILL miss it. Man, the memories! It was so much fun to get the cheat that allows you to flip cars.

I was born the same year this game came out. I think I was only 2 or 3 years old and played this game all of the time. I would be crashing into walls and always getting arrested immediately but I was having a blast. I knew how to put my ps1 together at about 3 years old.
My mom hated how addicted I got at an early age and threw the disc away. I was so heart broken😂
How the hell could you play videogames so young?, you where just a babyboy. I was 10 years old at the time that game was out, i actually remember that me and my dad was out on shoppingcenter. And i bought it in a game store,nowadays you have too buy it online:O.

Yeah, that was some great execution. Though, I'm quite rusty when it comes to NFS. This was a lucky one, love to take that sharp corner like that. As a kid I got stuck behind the lamp post in the same bent on the opposite side of the road, litterly hundreds of times. Hehe, thanks for the reply Ben!
NFS3 on PC along with CTR 1999 has by far the best controls i ever experienced in a racing game. The car feels so lightweighty and you feel in control.... i love it, i cant say the same for a lot of racing games unfortunately.
The sign in 2:54 says "Visit Autumn Valley Speedway". Autumn Valley Speedway is a race track in the first NFS game. Cool little easter egg :)
