    Another small detail to help your theory, The french were already in Louisiana, so it might have been a smart decision to go to Louisiana not only because of fellow people like her and also it would be one of the easier places to go because she was on a boat around that time. Anyway great theory!

      Mama odie is based more on Maman bridgitte a voodoo godess that became blind by own choice,she was too tired of seeing the infedelities of her husband so that means that she would be equal to everyone not eing able to see

    About Mama Odie being blind since birth, we can't know for sure because of what the shadowman says. He says something like "that's the thing about voodoo, can't conjure a thing for myself". So even if she was going blind, she couldn't do a thing.
    Also, good thinking because i think we only see the enchanteress with her eyes closed

    I always thought Mama Odie was more than she seemed. This is an intriguing theory. Also in that vein, Mama Odie could be an enchantress who punishes indiscriminately and therefore upon sensing great darkness in the prince made him look like the darkness he held which turned him into a beast. She then gave him the rose hoping he would eventually change. Just a thought. Oh and that glass interpretation totally does not show a ten year old, talk about artist interpretation (*cough* propoganda).

      You mention why doesn't Mamma Odie just do Vodoo on herself -to fix her sight, because one of the 1st rules of doing magic, you don't preform spells on yourself. It's a no-no, and Vodoo is some juju you don't piss off. When I was learning about the various types, that was one I was told you just stay away from because it is somethin` else. That's probably why she accepts her physical limitations as is.

      Also there is a theory that Queen Charlotte (consort to king George the 3rd) descended from a predominately dark skinned line in the Portuguese royal family thus making her the first biracial member of the royal family. It's also rumoured that painters might of tried lightening her skin in the paintings. I assumed that must be what happened to the depiction of Odis.
      (I would ask for you to take this with a pinch of salt though because I don't know if it's true although I have suspicion that it might be)

      Clearly the beast had to learn how to love before his 21st birthday according to the movie, and according to the movie in "Be Our Guest" Lumiere did said "10 years we've been rusting, needing so much more than dusting..." :/
      And art is a tool that one uses to capture a moment and interpret anyway the artist pleases.

    I think Mama Odie wanted to look "Natural" after she secluded herself, rather than transforming herself into a form that the creatures would be most comfortable with.

  • @bboops23

    I personally believe that his 21st year was intended to be his 21st year as a beast. I also believe that the town stopped aging and remained stuck in time. Why would they say then for 10 years we've been rusting? Because 10 years earlier the beast actively decided to give up looking for love. He has women's clothes that you've theorized were his mother's or the Wardrobes, but what if they belonged to a woman he previously tried to make things work with. And if we add in the canon of the Broadway show that everyone is becoming less human then we can theorize that the beast may not have always looked as fierce-some, he may have gotten hairier and bigger and less adept at using his hands as hands. The Broadway show had the servants have more trouble moving the longer they were cursed. I don't think the beast was 11 when cursed. On top of that there is no way that Chip is over 10 in the Disney film. So unless a teapot with no seen husband can procreate then those kids aren't aging.

    • @bboops23
      @bboops23 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I don't know about you but I didn't call my 21st birthday my 21st year. I called it my 21st birthday. But do you know what I did celebrate a few weeks ago? My 4th year of living on my own. My 4th year living in New York. Look at the wording. It is kept intentionally vague.
      On top of that the castle seems to operate on its own time. When Belle first arrives to find her father it has been a day or two at most and yet Maurice talks as though he has been there for weeks. When he arrives back in town they are getting their first snowfall. Maurice tries to convince them Belle has been taken by a Beast. We see from her point of view that she is there for an indeterminate amount of time, but to me it feels like about 2 months. It's enough time that she begins falling for the beast (or developing Stockholm Syndrome depending on your mindset). Neither of these things happens over night. And yet Gaston has trouble believing that Belle is missing.
      The fact is the time seems kind of off. It isn't easy to pin down. What if part of the curse is that the Beast will think it's been 21 years but in reality it has only been 3 or 4 years. If time is slowed down so severely for him it will feel like 21 years for him even if it has been 3.

    • @bboops23
      @bboops23 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      True but there's no evidence supporting it and even if it was true, it doesn't change the fact that Chip is younger than 10. His age tells me that time moves differently in the castle.

With this theory I like to think Juju is the only thing on the planet that knows Mama Odie's true from since she probably can't hold it forever. Also I made it to the end of the video! Can't wait to see what theory you come up with next.

      🤔 Yes, Juju is an interesting facet of Mama Odie’s character. He definitely seems to have some kind of spiritual nature to him but I don’t think he is a Loa like Dr. Facilier’s “friends” because Juju is actively shown to serve Mama Odie instead of the other way around. Furthermore, she almost treats Juju like a reincarnated partner given she kisses him and chides him for not telling her the gumbo was burning (which kind of sounds like a one-sided couple’s quarrel). Idk maybe they are just very close because Mama Odie can talk to animals and because they’ve lived with eachother for a long time. There seems to be more to Juju, especially since Juju looks very different than Dr. Facilier’s snakes (the ones that tied Naveen to the chair and helped get his blood in the talisman) despite both Facilier and Mama Odie having snakes help them.

    This makes sense. France owned the Louisiana territory before the US did. Anyway, I seem to recall her eyes and teeth are in jars. Maybe after what happened in France with the prince, her eyes and teeth were removed from her as punishment, much like Facilier is punished when he fails.

    Also, there is the ironic reference of the stained glass image with the enchantress and the ending part of the song “Dig A Little Deeper”. Both portray a church like setting, with Mama Odie (the enchantress) in the middle frame - a great symbol of her power.
    Edit: Yeah, it’s almost like a ‘trademark’ symbol for her

  • @tomaibetter
    @tomaibetter 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This is something I hadn't really thought. But can I just point something out: in the stained glass windows, the enchantress' eyes are closed when she is in the young form and in the Beauty and the Beast Christmas movie, she appears in a flashback and her eyes are one solid colour with no visible iris (pink). It's only when she is her old beggar form when her eyes look human. (I could be wrong but in the flashback, it looks like she doesn't blink as the old beggar woman. One eye is closed but the other is wide open. You're probably want to blink if you're stuck outside in a snow storm.) Maleficent is a fae, a type of fairy, also has oddly coloured eyes with the ability to shapeshift. This is what I believe the enchantress/ mama odie is; a far. So, this could work in this theory.
    ( I'm not including the live action remakes in this comment, only the animated films)

Furthermore, I’d never considered that Mama Odie wasn’t in her true form during the princess and the frog. Maybe she was partially spirit and human which might explain her long lifespan. I like this theory and the references from other Disney movies in Princess and the frog pointed out by this theorist a lot! Cool video!

And I find it really helpful, though an artistic stand point, as support to the theory.

    Although I can see where you are coming from thinking Mama Odie is a fairy I don't think that this as the case. I believe Mama Odie was intended to be A Bokor which is a part of Voodoo. I think this is what is intended as to show a comparison Between Mama Odie and Dr Facilier because the two show the different ways Voodoo is used.
    For Explanation A bokor is someone who serves their loa’s with both hands which means both the good and the evil
    A left handed Bokor is when they lean towards the more dark side of voodou which involves Voodoo dolls, Creating zombies, and Creating ‘Ouangas which are Talismans that house spirits. Left handed Bokors are known to be the type of people that use their ability only to benefit themselves and no one else.
    A right handed Bokor is when a Boker leans towards the more light side and Unlike the Left handed Bokors the ones that are Right handed almost exclusively use their abilities to help others.
    Thought for the most part Bokors do things both Left handed and right handed it’s just they tend to lean into one more than the other.
    As you can see Dr Facilier is clearly meant to be Left handed Bokor and Mama Odie is a right handed Bokor. But she didn’t use her Abilities to help the main characters because Mama odie thought that she didn't need to. And Instead of directly helping them she just lead them onto a path to help them realise what they actually needed and become better people in thr process. Which lead to a better Outcome than if she just turned them human right there and then.
    Also FYI Voodoo isn't actually magic Voodoo is actually a religion it's just that some types of voodoo use magic. Voodoo is actually about Ancestor worship and Animism and praising Spirits/Loa which have control over nature and humans.
    (Sorry if there are any spelling errors)
    And once again I can see what makes you think mama Odie is a fairy and I can respect that. This is just what I think is happening.

    The theory is interesting but from the deleted scenes from Beauty and the Beast, it can be seen that enchantress did have vision. She had those strange creepy pink glowing eyes. Not sure if that is the spiritual eye, but we do not know what Mama Odie hides behind those glasses. Maybe, she hides the pink glow, but maybe she is an ordinary blind woman with the power of doing magic.

    What if she changed her apperiance so nobody could reconize her and point her out for her magical mistake? A prince would be in the power to let the people surch for her and lock her up or worse. If she looks completly diffrent, they couldn't match her with the "crime". So she did make a good move by changing her looks and not using magic again. Sorry for the bad grammar. Religions. Louisiana Voodoo or New Orleans Voodoo, a set of African-based spiritual folkways. Haitian Vodou, a syncretic religion practiced chiefly in Haiti. Brazilian Vodum, one of the major branches (nations) of Candomblé West African Vodun, practiced by Gbe-speaking ethnic groups of Africa. Voodoo isn't just random magic it's very specific so there is a hole a big one in your theory.

    It is good but my idea is the enchantress could've been previously the witch from brave. She saw meridas selfish nature and had merida find the concern and love for others in a limited time. Seems like a bear was a common form for where she resided and possibly gave the beast more of a chance bcuz he was younger than previous encounters

    Even if Mama Odie DOES have the ability to cure her blindness she would not be able to use it on herself? Isn't voodoo taught? And HOW would she be able to materialize particular objects without being able to have seen them at least ONCE. Also, the enchanted objects do match up with her style but it does with the doctor! She simply just aids in how to counter spells not actually creating them. I have to say it doesn't seem like her style of things I think her and the Shadow man have more history than we think! Because was that shrunken head his MOTHER or a relative? If it is his mother's head HE maybe older than he seems as well having him and mama odie having a longer rivalry than it appears....or HE or his ancestors were the ones to mess up the Beast family CLAIMING it was for his own good.Only later to be caught and banished from the land as well as stripped of there abilities force the family to seek help from DEMONS to get it back to one day come back into power in another way.
    And Or Mr. Shadow Man COULD be Mama Odie's Apprentice. Idk why I think that I think it is simply because of how powerful he is with BORROWED powers and how did he figure out to do that. And how Mama Odie responses don't seem URGENT she seems chilled bout the whole thing as if it is a typical thing.
    That or I am over thinking.

    Without getting into the details, let me add: Louisiana is full of Cajuns. Cajuns originally came from Acadia, a French settlement in Canada, until they were deported south. Sooooo, France -> Acadia -> New Orleans... totally plausible!

  • @Bella-tb2bg

    Keep in mind that there are multiple forms of “magical practices.” Simply meaning that there’s voodoo, hoodoo, wicca, witchcraft, etc. What if mama odie was just switching around her “labels” of magic everywhere she went, while in reality she has her own unique style? So In France it was wicca or something originating in Europe, and when she went to New Orleans she switched to something like voodoo, or something originating in Africa? It would maybe explain her different appearances, maybe not in her physical figure but in the way her magic looks?? Just a little theory... but it’s cool to think about//

    I like this theory, it connects many pieces. :) Though, about the 21-years-old 'cut-off point' of the spell..
    If she made that rule when she felt the Prince's bad aura, that means she might've known he was younger than that age. So that's how long the spell would last.
    If she didn't, that rule could've been made after she felt guilt and couldn't fix it, like you said. And she added the cut-off point, (but with the catch so he could truly become a good boy and find love, and if he didn't, he'd be stuck as the Beast forever), so he can be an adult human.

    Prefacing this with I loved this video and your take on it! I'm new to this channel and this was the third vid I've watched from you and Ive enjoyed it thoroughly! In regards to this theory, for me I'm combining both real life implications and fantastical implications, considering the film does touch on real life examples of racism. For starters, if she was born blind in America in 1729, high chances are that she either might've been killed (as she wasn't capable enough for servitude) or was born into an enslaved family and by the time she reached the age where the enchantress cursed the Beast, she'd most def be in the plantation house, working as a servant. Class wise, bc chattel slavery had surpassed indentured servitude, she more than likely wouldn't have had the mobility to leave the US and travel to France. How she arrived at her secluded place is due to her running away to freedom (which begs the question: if she was a very skilled vodou practicer and had magic at her disposal, why not run to the north? (In response: escaping to the north was more rare than it was to escape into the local forests and greenery and considering where she is, it was probably an act of outsmarting her capturers by going deeper into territory they didn't know but that she, with magic on her side, might have the upper hand with)). Again, loved this take and enjoyed this video!!

    Awesome theory. I never thought about that, you know?
    And here's a little bit of trivia for you regarding Mama Odie, in case you don't know it yet. In the first draft of the Princess and the Frog, she would have been Doctor Facilier's mother, who unlike her son, always took the path of white magic (there was even supposed to be a showdown between those two at the Mardi Gras,). But, they decided to cut it, because they felt it would be better if Mama Odie remained the mysterious voodoo lady that we see in the final version. :)

    Mama odie can' t be the enchantress in beauty and the Beast, because in beauty and the Beast Belle is taking a book to the librarian at the very beginning of the movie which Is the Jack and the beanstalk fairytale by Joseph Jacobs, an english writer, where there Is an Ogre and not a giant, and this fairytale was published in 1890.

    Honestly, Prince Adam from Beauty & the Beast wasn't 11 when he was cursed, he was obviously 21. He & his staff &/or servants didn't age a day from when he was cursed!! Neither did he! It doesn't make any freakin sense that he was 11 when he & his servants were cursed. How could he have aged after 21 years from age 11 to 21, when his servants didn't age a day after the curse!! B/c he wasn't 11 when the curse was placed!! He was 21 & when the curse was set, he & his staff didn't age a day from that fateful night!!! Gah, people who think that he was 11 when everything went down just grate me! Sorry, not trying to be rude, just venting my honest opinion on that. Obviously people need to start think logically.
