Personally I really like the fact that they went with a stick gear selector rather than buttons. Really gives it the feeling and look of robust quality that you want with a luxury off roady suv.
the electronic shifters that try to imitate it are very confusing to use… i like lincoln’s buttons. different than the traditional shifter but stupid easy to use
I miss the 2D stepped pattern of 2010's Toyota 4x4's you never accidentally select the wrong great in one of those. Very useful when doing tight 3 point turns on narrow forest roads
Run a time drill on a car with electric push start, electronic parking brakes, and electric shifting. Imagine your being chased by a psycho. Every car I've tested failed and got killed. Lincoln might be most intuitive.
Why does it matter, if they all have the same electronic engagement? It literally just feels fake. It's like the equivalent of buying wheels with fake beadlocks on them to make the car feel more "rugged" even though they do nothing.
Honestly, the gear selector is a plus for me. The older style is way more convenient and ergonomic than dials or buttons. I don't want to have to look down at my gear selector to determine what I'm doing.
I hate the way these old gear selectors feel/look, however, I have to admit I've put our land rover into Park a lot (and I mean A LOT) of times while trying to go from drive to reverse without looking at the dial while maneuvering it. They just don't look really nice, imo
I also personally feel that LX gear shifter is still better in terms of operating and feeling wise. I can quickly reverse or maneuver the car without looking at it. I am surprised by the fact most people in the comments like the old school way.
I actually like the shifter. As someone who does three-point turns and other similar maneuvers every single time I drive, it's nice to have something you don't have to look at or fiddle with to change direction. (Or, good grief, stop working when your hands are still slightly wet from rain, or too dry, or too cold, or gloved. Capacitive touch anything hates my guts with a vengeance.)
Lol it ain’t that deep. The newer ones are better design and function wise, rotating a knob is just as easy. There’s nothing wrong with this either but it’s definitely not superior in 2022.
@Paul S actually doug complained about not having front power seats cooling seats and stuff but there are available in 7 and 5 seat models in the front as well. so why doug did not say that and bashed this when its fantastic luxury suv
@Paul S But they have gone for that stinkin' electric park brake, lose ALL your electrics and you are stuffed, no means of holding it on any slope. Give me the safety of a lever you can grab in any emergency.
@Paul S I own an older Lexus and I have experienced plenty of electronic issues just like many other cars that age. Only thing is, most are not major concerns and no major mechanical setbacks which is why it doesn’t leave you stranded. Many BMWs, Benzes etc will blow gaskets and piss oil far before their electronics give out. If you think Lexus has no electronic issues then you are either ignorant or stupid, just as you sound.
I think I can actually explain a lot of features focused on rear passengers: Toyota and Lexus SUVs are popular vehicles for the very rich in Latin America. Rich people who purchase these tend to have bodyguards who do the actual driving, often two sitting in the front while the owners sit in the back. It is not uncommon for those who are even wealthier to have additional SUVs or pickup trucks driven by other bodyguards to accompany their main vehicle. Toyota/Lexus surely know this and I would not be surprised that this is also the case in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, where I understand these SUVs are also popular among rich people. Leasing cars is not a popular thing to do outside of the US and Canada as far as I know, so simple and reliable features are also appreciated in these regions (and if you think about it, you don’t really care if your bodyguard has all the nicest luxuries, ammenities or tech).
I live in Dubai and we do have lots of these but it's mostly driven by the actual people who buy them. Its still more amenities for your children i suppose
I am from medellin, Colombia and this are extremely popular, so Spot on. Especially Toyota. Because of its reliability it’s seen here as a luxury brand like MB or BMW, instead as in the USA that is a more common brand.
5:55 I actually like this kind of physical gear selector. It fits with the character of this SUV anyway. The LX/Land Cruiser has always been old-school functionality and reliability over state-of-the-art tech and cool gimmicks.
A space saving selector switch is not state of the art or gimmicky. It actually has function. It’s not like the gear selector is actually physically connected to the gearbox. It’s also an electronic switch which should be moved to the dash to make more space in the centre console. IMO the physical large selector switch is more gimmicky as the function it performs can be performed by 4 small P,R,N,D buttons.
Exactly. I bought a new one in 2019...I don't care about the latest tech when I spend a lot....I did that earlier in life and the vehicles depreciated to little value with huge repair costs if I kept it - and tech that was as outdated as an old cell phone. I'll buy a new phone annually and keep my expensive vehicles for years.
As always, good overall review, Doug. Having owned several “high-end” vehicles I’ll tell you this. Toyota/Lexus will never be first to market with anything groundbreaking. They take technology from the Germans that’s anywhere from 2-5 years old and unlike the Germans, they perfect it. So you’re right- the Nav/Entertainment/“Luxury” features are are not up to modern times with the Germans. But as someone who owns a 2022 Audi A8 with all the modern “features”….they’re a failure. Quirky, buggy, problematic. Nothing it’s cracked up to be. So, “latest” isn’t always “greatest.”
so same as android and iphone deal. iPhone is always couple years late with features but when they do implement it, boy oh boy do they work flawlessly.
@cheese ios 16 has been very buggy yes. But is not as bad as android still. Idk how they are now but I exclusively bought flagship androids for 9 years and either software or battery becomes unusable or both after year or two. My 13 pro max is as good as new still
I recently purchased a 2022 LX600 and I 100% DO have wireless charging in the front console. I do not have the Ultra Luxury model shown in this video. I have the Luxury package model (one step down from this one) in the same exterior color. I also love the climate concierge, works really well. And the ML audio system is fantastic!
Looks like all models, except Ultra Lux, have the wireless charging up front. The Ultra Lux moves the wireless charging pad to the rear passenger space.
The seemingly old fashioned interior features (or lack thereof) can be explained away by the fact that the flagship Landcruiser isn't getting anything that won't last a minimum of ten years without causing any issues.
Indeed, as mentioned in the video. However, also as mentioned in the video, unless you actually plan to own this for the long haul, these compromises are lost on you. People who want to keep it for 10 or 15 years will love this stuff, but most $100K SUV buyers lease a new one every three years -- and for them, a lot of these compromises will be a disappointment.
Honestly, I prefer using the old school gear levers instead of some knob or pushing some buttons. Also glad to see the amount of physical buttons instead of having to depend on a screen to do everything.
Love Lexus because it’s mantra is “ if it broke don’t fix it” and i love that they still have the old school shift lever. it’s reliable, inexpensive, and not overly complicated.
@@aleksandarasenov5615 What's nice about a digit stick or button shifter? What's so "premium" and "advanced" about it? It's just a new, gimmicky way of shifting. This shifter doesn't take up much space anyway.
after years with a 2016 Pilot and now a 2021 Santa Fe, I have to say that button-operated gear selectors look nice, but when you're in an emergency situation when you have to quickly shift from R to D or vice versa, buttons absolutely suck. actually, they suck even in day-to-day operation.
@@faraziqbal188 They can be. I don't have an issue with the styling in my Santa Fe and it's just a little better laid out than what is in Honda. But really, if you're going there, then a conventional shifter is just a stick. Buttons are nice in that they don't block an area off like a stick would. But a regular shifter is much more useful when you have to suddenly go into reverse when the idiot of front of you is backing up and not looking...
@@sigbauer9782 you do present a fair point for buttons, but I personally prefer the more tactile feel of moving a lever. Also I absolutely love how BMW and Audi make their shift knobs feel like throttle controls in a plane, makes you feel like you’re really behind the wheel of a serious car
I agree. My wife has grown to hate the push button gear selector in her 2018 GMC Terrain although it does look "modern" according to what some journalists say lol. She came out of an old 2008 CR-V when we got it but she reminds me fairly often how much easier it was to simply drive it lol. We'll likely be shopping for a new Rav4 soon but she's been eyeing the new Ford Bronco Sport although they have a rotary shifter which I'm not sure if that's any better or worse.
@@Stressless2023 It might be better if the tactile feedback would allow you to put it into a gear without even looking, just like how the old school controls would. I mean, did you ever really have to look down as you went from P to D or R back then? You just knew. Plus, these new transmissions require you to be at a FULL STOP before pressing the button and then you still have to deal with a long delay. Just awful.
Seems like your comments about the gear shifter have struck a chord with everybody, including myself! Not until you deal with the problematic rising dial shifters or failed switches do you appreciate the old school levers.
Except these modern level are no different than the dials, and are just sensors telling the transmission to shift. Your aren't actually physically putting the car in gear like levers of the past
It's a little upsetting to see someone so high up in the car reviewing industry, who could potentially have the power to persuade big companies to change their ways, to be speaking badly of the traditional shift lever. It's definately far superior to a knob, button, or even a rocker in my opinion
I way prefer the more “old school” gear selector. I’ve always disliked the direction manufacturers are going in when it comes to the minimal, small, button-like gear selectors. Changing gears is a big deal, and changing your gear should be done with something substantial like a center mounted gear shifter.
Although a lot of the "OMG I HATE SCREENS" crowd will say this, ultimately there are huge benefits to modern gear selectors -- the biggest being safety, as they can automatically shift into park when you open your door to prevent accidental acceleration/roll away.
I 100% agree with you here. Sometimes you just gotta slam the car in gear using your whole fist and step on it. Clicking a little dinky knob over a few notches is just.... nah.
Where I’m from the 570s are substantially more expensive than GLS' or X7's due to massive engine displacement tax (like at least 70% more, basically the tax nearly quadrupled the price vs US markets), yet rich guys just can’t stop buying those because they just won’t break, and you can’t deny the LX has such a road presence. Yes we can say they don't know how to buy a car, paying more something "worse", but they're rich, they know what kind of value they want, and the LX gives them just that Plus some older guys just want an expensive, comfortable, simple SUV, not gimmicky stuff that goes wrong
@@TzadikTheManic yeah. It’s not so much the size as it is the shape and placement. For BMW’s classic kidney design it just looks wrong to have it massively oversized and sometimes going into the bumper region. With Lexus grille design which is quite new and only recently established, it doesn’t hurt so much to see it, despite of the unnecessary size
Oh, Doug... This is a fantastic upgrade from the past. The gear selector is great. I'd have made a smaller one, like the one in the LS, but it is good Lexus/Toyota haven't run from the shifters. I have to laugh how he points out you want this for the long-term not the short-term. Wrong. You want it. Period. The LX interior materials are superior to those of its rivals. No MB or BMW will hold up after 3+ years on the traditional lease. And get real if you think a Jag-LR car will.
Agreed . Doug first needs to understand that this is a chauffeur driven focused model not front but because of supply chain issues front wireless charging is not available and in other trims you can have that in front .each trim is for different people and also this has everything navigator and escalade have maybe super cruise or self drivering apart f from that its perfect .so doug please dont down grade something because maybe you dont like it or scotty trolling you
I don’t know who said it, but several years back a reviewer commented on the ever increasing price of ultra luxury vehicles that the high price is a feature. It’s actually a selling point once you reach a certain level.
@@justifano7046 Well, the same reason why someone looking at buying a new house may not want to see houses below a certain price point on Zillow or Redfin. You just kind of assume cars below that price point may not have the same appointments as you wish. That's not to say I don't appreciate cars below the price point. I love love love how many standard features are thrown in on everyday mainstream vehicles. It has forced premium manufacturers to start to offer more standard features. @@michaelmaas5544 It is, but they removed it on the ultra luxury trim citing chipset shortage issue. You can find that wireless charging pad installed in there if you see the initial reveal videos.
@@snaperio9678 I've heard from other reviews that it is removed on the ultra luxury trim. They opted on providing only one for the back seats on that trim.
I wouldn't expect the same features in a six figure Lexus as they have in a Range Rover or a Mercedes so this looks pretty sweet overall. I would think you're knowingly giving up some of those extras in order to have a much more reliable car.
.lx lacks nothing as doug says.infact i checked and did trim to trim vs escalade and navigator this has same luxury options and in my opinion a more luxurious interior Also this model is for rear passengers so thats why its all in the rear so dont care to much doug words here intrigued mind.
So why would you pay 6 figures for a luxury vehicle without features? You could literally get the same features in a 4Runner or RAV4. The point of buying a luxury vehicle is for the features lol. Otherwise just buy the last generation used.
my dude Doug, the regular gear level is a massive selling point to me. the shift dial for the transmission oporation in rivals is yuck to me. the regular level just feels better than the dial so i don't understand the gripe here lol
@@shoobadoo123 the truck can be optioned with a front wireless charger in other trims. and theres plenty of room in the that truck center console lol, plus he even said in his personal LC 200 series that he prefers the old school shift lever lol
In the other reviews they mention that on this trim specifically, and thanks to global supply issues, the wireless charger was moved to the back seats since that’s the premium seating spot meant to be chauffeured. The other trims have the wireless chargers up front
@@DougDeMuro for the sheer amount of electronics in this car, why would a simple wireless charger be an issue for microchip supply issues? Seems like a very odd decision
@@DougDeMuro yeah, so I'm going to have to agree with doug here, but with more reasons: A client being chauffeured can just... give their phone... to the driver. It's not like they'll be using their phone while it's on the charging pad anyway, so just give it to the driver. And additionally, at the 120k price point, how many people in the US (the primary market for it) will actually be driven? If it was a cullinan or a maybach..... ok, sure. But this'll be driven by your average mid-senior exec pulling a 300k+ salary. Should've been in the front. This was a bad call.
@@drewmiller7896 Chip shortages are weird and seemingly random, but that's largely a consequence of how fabs are allocated right now. E.g some American cars had start/stop disabled out of the factory because the cheap chips needed to make them happen were in short supply, but the rest of the car was just fine to ship.
This may be just me but I honestly prefer the physical gear selector rather than buttons, it’s easier to use especially when you’re maneuvering a lot, in a parking lot or doing a 3 point torn, it’s just more natural to slam it into the gear that way, I drive a 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe from time to time and whole the button shifter looks good, it’s so annoying to use on a day to day basis
Idk how Doug still misses this, but the weird 360 camera thing only happens in Park. When you're in reverse or drive that button brings up the good version.
Most of the points that "feel old" to you appear to me as they were designed with ruggedness in mind. This has a center locking diff and crawl modes. It shouldn't have unnecessary actuators to shift gears for you at the push of a button when the risk of failure off road is too great. I think Lexus did a nice job with everything that could be given the luxury treatment without sacrificing reliability. The gauge cluster is a fail though.
It seems to be missing quite a few luxury items that modern buyers would likely expect in this price range. I think the off road credentials mean little for a six figure Lexus in North America, but I guess Toyota did what they could.
gauge and 360 cam is a carry over from all the prior toyota line up, could it be due to chip shortage and they still have old tech and they in a rush to deliver the vehicle, im sure all this will be updated in the face lift model
The feel old situation is starting feel weird from a person who claim to a car enthusiasts and want a car to remain a car. 🤔.. Not a smartphone on wheels.
Some of the 'dated' bits like the gearshifter and instrument cluster are there because I think to some degree, Lexus buyers still WANT some of that traditional stuff, it symbolises the dependable Toyota/Lexus quality/reliability and eschews the gimmicky stuff from it's competitors. I love the fact my IS has a beautiful leather/chrome gear shifter, instrument binnacle, lots of leather and real wood inserts. I can't stand these floating ipads that Mercedes use for their instrument cluster, without a binnacle and that column mounted stalk for gear selections. edit: in conclusion: why doesn't this Lexus have all the gimmicks of RR or MB or BMW? because it's not a metrosexual town car. The LX is not directly competing with a Range Rover, it's kind of it's own thing. It's a Land Cruiser based vehcile that combined two worlds of utilitarian LandCruiser and luxury Lexus. It's unashamedly a quirky vehicle not following the pack..and the buyers LOVE IT.
I can't believe he didn't show off the electric folding footrest for rear passengers. It was clearly visible on the screen when he folded the rear seat back into a lounging position.
Seriously as soon as I saw the back of the passenger seat I knew it had the fold-down and then I saw the screen I'm like come on show it to me and it just never did come on Doug what are you doing man show me the quirks and features and you're not showing me the interesting quirks and features
I bought a 2021 LX new 6 months ago. I feel like Doug just doesn't get the target audience for people who buy these or Lexus in general. Most do not want technology that might fail in 10 years which I would imagine a large majority of buyers of these vehicles keep them for a loooong time. Which is why the gear selector and analog dash still exists.
The new lx has so much tech and features its just they not flashy otherwise lx is the best non european full size luxury suv .better than the americans plus doug never like lexus products unless its the lc500 and ls500
No Doug gets it. That's great you have the means to afford an LX, but what sells in this segment is panache and technology, which is why most buyers here lease their 100K rig. Lexus is the outlier, and honestly for what they ask for is worth it if you keep it that long, but most luxury buyers don't keep their cars that long so they don't care if it lasts 10 years. That's why RRs/BMWs/Mercedes stay popular because there is no risk to the potential reliability issues most European vehicles are susceptible to once the warranty is over.
@@trdrav4 1. Doug is wrong because this trim levels front do get power seats and everything .this one he tested did not have those in the front because of supply issues but there are available .i checked and checked otherwise I won't comment and talk to you
The thing about toyota is that they dont always have the latest and best tech but they focus on everything else, this is part why they are know for their reliability. Id rather own a more simplified SUV knowing that those extra features wont break (right away at least). I own and only drive toyota /lexus and do like those decisions they make
So what you’re saying is that you’ll overpay for an SUV with no more features than a Rav 4? Reliability is great, but you can get that from a 4Runner that’s less than half the price of this. So what are you really paying 120k for?
These cars do really really well in the MENA and general African regions. Having a reliable vehicle is a massive plus in my country, also a lot of them people get here are armoured. You'd want an armoured vehicle that basically costs twice the price of a standard one to last a long long time.
Idk if I could automatically give this car the perceived reliability advantage of the old Lexus LX because this is a new much less proven and much more complex powertrain. The odds are probably good that it'll be pretty durable given Toyota's reputation but Doug spoke way too assuredly about this lasting longer than other SUV's in its class when it's too new for any real data.
If they offered the V8 and V6 for this new LX there would be more buyers for it and even if they redesign the V8 it would be better I think some would agree with me

Doug flipping that center console open many times gave me anxiety. I have a '97 LX450 with 340k miles. When people play with stuff in the car, I tell them, "Well that's 5 times less that thing will work."
It’s a great vehicle and will last a long time. It’s not a Range Rover competitor though. Part of the rover appeal is that everyone knows they don’t last and if you’re driving one it’s because you have lots of extra income. That’s the power of conspicuous consumption and jlr has leveraged it for decades.
6:10 Doug is very inconsistent when it comes to gear levers. He says that these new ones are strange and weird, but then says that the traditional ones are also strange and weird because they’re still around in today’s world…
At this point I really don’t have any complaints about this car.. I’ve anticipated it so much and I’m happy it’s finally here, as beautiful as imagined Concerning the gear shifter.. Lexus and Toyota haven’t had any reputation of going off the deep end in latest tech or any of that They don’t fix what’s not broken It takes them so much time to evolve to what the Germans have left And maybe that’s just what makes them the good old reliable brand that they are today
I have a 2018 jag XF, look up the gear selector. So imagine going to work telling your wife to sleep in because you will drop the kids off school and then have your gear selector stuck. It bricked my POS jag. Trust me, the European cars will go back to the Lexus way.

Highly appreciate the efforts you put to keep your quality content coming. But the center console at the rear is not exactly the same as the one in the front. Because, in spite of being accessable from side to side, the front one is also accessable from its back end. As a result, the passengers at the rear can access both front and rear center consoles. For more confirmation, anyone can visit any review out there for the 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser LC300. I get the feeling that a lot of Doug's criticisms are probably from the perspective of a relatively younger person. I think that a lot of the criticisms are simply Lexus knowing and catering to their market. I get why the ride may be an issue, but in this trim most probably won't leave the city or ever be driven all that hard, so less settled body control is probably a trade off for a more luxurious ride.

My guess is that the missing wireless charger and other missing modern creature comforts is only because you’re looking at the ultra luxury package. People that shop for ultra luxury package vehicles are planning to be driven around, not the other way around. More attention will be paid to the passenger seat in that class of vehicle.

I actually like the shifter. As someone who does three-point turns and other similar maneuvers every single time I drive, it's nice to have something you don't have to look at or fiddle with to change direction.
Spot on! That's why this configuration is so weird on Doug's viewpoint.
I am from medellin, Colombia and this are extremely popular, so Spot on. Especially Toyota. Because of its reliability it’s seen here as a luxury brand like MB or BMW, instead as in the USA that is a more common brand.
It. Is. $130. Thousand. Dollars! Nothing justifies not putting a better gauge cluster, wireless charging, and massage seats!
Perfect explanation, remember Doug, not everyone turns on US market only
5:55 I actually like this kind of physical gear selector.

Hello - What color is this?
The seemingly old fashioned interior features (or lack thereof) can be explained away by the fact that the flagship Landcruiser isn't getting anything that won't last a minimum of ten years without causing any issues.
Complexity is the enemy of reliability

Land cruisers were great because of their reliability. However in the past few years they were being the opposite of that
@@georgefotiadis3787 I have a 2009 land cruiser she still runs like the day I bought it, it's sad to see that Toyota is diverting from reliability.
Indeed, as mentioned in the video. However, also as mentioned in the video, unless you actually plan to own this for the long haul, these compromises are lost on you. People who want to keep it for 10 or 15 years will love this stuff, but most $100K SUV buyers lease a new one every three years -- and for them, a lot of these compromises will be a disappointment.

after years with a 2016 Pilot and now a 2021 Santa Fe, I have to say that button-operated gear selectors look nice, but when you're in an emergency situation when you have to quickly shift from R to D or vice versa, buttons absolutely suck. actually, they suck even in day-to-day operation.
Can you really even say they look nice? A shifter can look like anything, but buttons are just… buttons

My Ram 1500 has a knob shifter and I hate it. I'd love to have a classic gear shifter. It beats the hell out of all the other computerized crap
Also, I never had an old school gear selector fail on me. My 2014 Mercedes, on the other hand...
Yes. It's a shame technology is now associated with luxury. Technology is ubiquitous and quickly made obsolete.
Although a lot of the "OMG I HATE SCREENS" crowd will say this, ultimately there are huge benefits to modern gear selectors -- the biggest being safety, as they can automatically shift into park when you open your door to prevent accidental acceleration/roll away.
Agreed. Something to also rest my hand on. Can’t imagine not having a full on gear selector.
I 100% agree with you here. Sometimes you just gotta slam the car in gear using your whole fist and step on it. Clicking a little dinky knob over a few notches is just.... nah.

Yes we can say they don't know how to buy a car, paying more something "worse", but they're rich, they know what kind of value they want, and the LX gives them just that
Plus some older guys just want an expensive, comfortable, simple SUV, not gimmicky stuff that goes wrong

Highly appreciate the efforts you put to keep your quality content coming. But the center console at the rear is not exactly the same as the one in the front.
