    This is perfect because you included the waveform.
    Many other channels do a sound only demo video when reviewing compressors, being that TH-cam already compresses the hell out of audio, those videos are entirely useless.

    Question about your maximum limiting setting- I use this same pedal and the way I understand the directions the attack and release are essentially "time" controllers like on a delay, so turning the attack all the way to the left and release all the way to the right (opposite of your settings) should compress your signal for longer. A short attack means it will kick on faster, and a late release should make it compress longer. A late attack and fast release should only compress your signal for a short duration and not until after your attack. I think you attained a fairly squished sound still by maximizing your compression ratio. I would like to have heard that same clip with the attack & release settings reversed. Great video all the same, and being such a subtle effect I find so much contradictory info about their use. I'm always cross referencing.

    • @TsunamiRed
      @TsunamiRed  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'll try what you suggest to double check, but the settings that I've dialed in (attack to the right, release to the left), are indeed the shortest attack and the longest release. As I said at 5:51, the way these knobs function are the opposite of what you'd normally expect.
      Thanks for watching!

      @@TsunamiRed I had band practice last night and messed with the release knob. You are in fact correct. I re-read the manual and found that the way they describe the knobs values and their uses are contradictory. You are correct for sure on the way to use it. When turned counter clockwise it gives the slowest release. I find the attack knob hard to tell the difference when maxed out in either direction, personally, so I'm inclined to rely on your interpretation on that. Thank you for giving me the motivation to experiment a bit more with my compressor!

  • @diegohenin6755
    @diegohenin6755 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey, great review. I have this pedal and always get confused on how to use it according to my way of playing. On your first example, fingerplucking, those initial peaks arent compressed because the attack knob is not fast enough? If this is the case, should it be turned clock or counterwise? And the gain in the wet signal is due to the input knob? In this example, what role is the Release knob playing? Thanks for putting this up for everyone to enjoy and learn.

    • @TsunamiRed
      @TsunamiRed  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, every initial clip is dry (i.e. uncompressed). I mentioned about what direction the knobs should be turned late in the video. Release knob is simply controlling the release and decay of the compression. Thanks very much for watching!

    This compressor eats plenty of lows. If you want it - it's OK.

    • @TsunamiRed
      @TsunamiRed  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess I'd have to compare with another to judge. What you would suggest?

    • @astrokratov_official
      @astrokratov_official 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TsunamiRed take Bass Compact Deluxe from Origin Effects. It has a HPF for you to filter lows out of the compression threshold. Pretty convenient for the purpose. And Xotic compressor for the third one. This one is a two-knob type of simplest construction.

    • @TsunamiRed
      @TsunamiRed  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Never heard of the Origin Effects one, that looks pretty boutique. I have the Xotic Compressor for guitar, it's foolproof.

      Admittedly I do tend to record signals a little hotter than I should but my interface never really indicated I was in the clipping zone.

    that pedal seems to give more saturation than compression 🤢🤮

    • @TsunamiRed

  • @trenken
    @trenken 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I honestly hate this pedal. Had it and returned it to amazon. I have an aggressive plucking attack. I need a compressor to cut down on the abrasive sounds you get when the strings hit the frets. This pedal does NOT do that well at all. Probably the most overrated compressor pedal ive seen.

    • @TsunamiRed
      @TsunamiRed  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That must be some serious attack you have, lol. What pedal do you use then?

    • @trenken
      @trenken 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TsunamiRed i play kinda similar to geddy lee. He beats the crap outta the strings and i do as well. Im using the built in compression in the boss gt 1000. Its excellent. This mxr pedal i think isnt meant for aggressive players. It may be fine for people with a light attack. But for me it just was way too understated. Was awful at cutting back the noise when the strings hit the frets.

    • @TsunamiRed
      @TsunamiRed  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@trenken Gotcha, that's an aggressive picking style all right. Can't go wrong with Boss, I was close to getting the BC-1X but decided to go with the MXR. I find it does all right with slap/pop, but hey, always go with what complements your musical voice

    • @EVILbassplayer
      @EVILbassplayer 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I play very aggressively too. Fingerstyle aka slap. Getting a nice tone with the MXR. Ratio at 12. LED's into orange... Release 1 o clock, attack 8 o clock.
