Fun fact: having a whammy on your pedalboard allows you to have chorus, detune, octaver, and pitch shifter. All in one single pedal!

My chorus stays on pretty much all the time, it adds a lot of depth and texture to the bass, which in the overall band mix thickens up the whole rhythm section. My favorite is the Boss Chorus Ensemble, because the treble and bass frequencies have separate blend knobs. I like to dial the bass all the way out and crank the treble side, so that my low end stays clean and the pedal just adds a ton of high end shimmer

Nice list. The signal chain I'm using right now is SansAmp for tone shaping and DI -> Darkglass B3k for distortion -> EQD Hoof Reaper for fuzz -> Boss SY1 for synth emulation -> Zoom CDR70 for modulation and miscellaneous fx -> Boss DD200, which I can fade in via expression pedal. With this relatively simple setup, I can make almost any sound my band could ever need

I use an EQ instead of a preamp, no DI out but every single gig I've played has the bass going through the venue's DI. My chain goes tuner > comp > EQ > octave > dist > fuzz > guitar amp sim (I play both bass and guitar on my band) > chorus > reverb

With a Sans Amp, you really don't really NEED extra distortion. Chorus is nice once in a while but hardly essential. I'd say that these days, an octave pedal is necessary if you're playing in band covering contemporary pop music. I like the Sonic Stomp for adding clarity.

My pedal board is Comp/Sustainer ->Octaver->looper->PreAmp (TC Electronic SpectraDrive)
I end up using Comp at the beginning for evening out the input and then the comp in the SpectraDrive to polish up the final signal. SpectraDrive also adds any OD dirt needed, *AND* finally it has an Aux in for external music and a Headphone out so I can travel with a bass and just my pedals to jam in the hotel. I definitely am looking at getting a chorus to add to the mix.

@@JonnyDibble As I travel a lot, it was a perfect starting point to my pedal board as it has OD and Comp along with the 4-band EQ. I use the stock tone prints and I'll warn you that this is NOT the higher end device where you can make your own tone prints, only download premade ones from their app (app and prints are free). But you can find these pedals used for a reasonable price. Slightly more bulky than a normal pedal but will work with a power adapter chain. @@JonnyDibble I honestly didn't get it for that "feature", like I said I keep the tone prints stock, its nice that its flexible. I should also mention that the OD and Comp are both "single knob" effects so if you are looking for configurable effects, this isn't it. Like I mentioned before, I usually like just a little dirt (Geddy-esque) and the Comp is the "final polish" so I don't need it to be robust typically.

Compressor is great for slap and finger style. I mostly play pick style and use that co control dynamics. As far as mic'ing cabs, definitely a fan of that over DI, it's just tricky finding a sound engineer that's not afraid to do it. With distortion, I hate blend knobs, and "bass" drive pedals aren't necessary for my playing.

    • @JonnyDibble

I just set up my first full pedalboard. I start my signal with a tuner, then went with overdrive and chorus. I needed delay for some songs that I've been needing to work on. I'm looking to add a compressor, although I do have compression available on my amp. I actually have a fuzz pedal that I already had, in addition to the overdrive, and the two (overdrive and fuzz) both do as you suggested - add to what the guitar is doing, in key parts. The chorus is also good in specific parts (my band actually does a lot of Nirvana). So... you were right on the spot. I'll also be looking at octave pedals eventually.

I've been paying guitar since 1994 and only recently (about 2 years ago) started to play bass for fun after a friend give me a Maison P-bass from the 80's! The Bass was a mess, super dirty, rust, broken pickguard and pots, wires riped and all. I fixed it all and kept it!
I actually got in 2 bands a few months ago and decided it was time to get some gear. What gear?! Well. I obviously already had a tuner and an Overdrive that actually sounds good with bass also (Bad Monkey) but i just bought 3 used pedals and it's exactly what you talked about in the video!
I Got a Tech 21 Compressor that i leave on ALL the time, A Chorus that i also have on most of the time (with very low effect volume) and i got a Sans amp clone. The Behringer one!
I actually have the Pre amp ALWAYS on also because i'm not even using a Bass amp. And to be honest i'm NOT gonna buy one. ever!
The Sans amp is at the end of the pedal chain and it has a D.I. out to front of house and the output goes to a Rack with P.A. EQ and Power amp and then into two old school p.a. 1x15 cabs. The whole rig is taller than me!
If this ever gets more serious i would go into in ears. I'm never gonna buy any Bass amp thats guaranteed! lol
I also like to use a Phaser a few times on the Bass. The good thing is that i have everything in the same board for guitar and bass. I obvioulsy don't need the bass compressor on the guitar as well as i dont use my Decimator Noise gate on the bass. And i rarely use the delay but all my guitar pedals are ok for bass. Except for the Dunlop wah obviously!

Two things to watch out for:
Distortion kills lows. Get a bass distortion, which will blend the clean lows back in. I have a Boss BB-1X. It leaves the lows alone and can blend the clean and dirty.
Mostly a problem with single coil pickups, compression and distortion will both make noise louder. You might want to have a gate to shut off the signal when you stop playing.

Re preamp and DI out to house sound:
    Abso(friggin)lutely!
Used to be we carried around a “stack”, an amp head, a 4x10 and a 15” cab. Standing in front of those things was enough to give you WOOD! Ah, those were the days...
But now, you just wander in with your 12” Markbass combo for your stage sound and DI out to the sound guy and, hence, GIVE UP ALL CONTROL OF YOUR TONE!!! Except for onstage, of course. Big whoop. But I digress...
Yeah, that’s something I am concerned about with the new Zoom B1 four pedal I just picked up. No XLR out. Just your basic 1/4” jack. Is that good enough for the sound guy? Any sound guys out there wanna weigh in on this? Don’t tell me I gotta go out and buy a separate DI (pedal)! If so, which one? Your opinions welcome.

My take on "D.I. vs Cab" :
I love mixing the two using separate mixer channels. I scoop the mids & mid-bass on D.I. channel to let the mids/mid-bass cab's channel pop out in the mix.
Up to me it's quite a perfect match between amp/cab coloration (mainly in the mids) and good low-end, deep bottom from the D.I. (and hi-treble as well)

@@JonnyDibble If they would have put a tuner in there, it would really be all I need. I like to keep things simple. For my clean side I went from my Boss LMB-3 and MXR M81, 10 knobs combined to just 4 knobs on the Bass Butler. If I use overdrive it is usually just a small amount to give my sound a bit of a kick. But if you like heavy distortion, you will find it here as well.
I am glad I bought it. But I am a fan of Orange. I had their Crush 100 combo before switching to the Little Bass Thing so I knew what I would get.
If you like to build a big pedalboard, the bass butler might not be your cup of Earl Grey. But for me, a set-and-forget kind of guy, it works great.

Pretty killer way to add a bit of warmth, but pedal allows the grit to be blended in subtly with the clean tone. Soon as I decided on one pedal, went with 4 space board and added a tuner and chorus/flange.
Room for one more on my board, but in no hurry to decide. Dont really need a HPF/LPF or compressor as my amp has those covered.

I also love their Slö reverb pedal. It's a little quirky in a great way, and combines with the Julia excellently.
For "non-essential" pedals, Red Panda Bitmapv2 with an MXR Vintage octave in front of every other pedal (except your wah/volume) is amazing if you want to emulate synth bass sounds.
