This compressor is fantastic. I've had it for 4 years now and it's never let me down. It has never left my chain since going on my pedal board, and it has been incredibly reliable. I've never had any issues outside of user error when getting my settings right. I will say it can be daunting compared to more simple compressors that are just magic boxes that do all the work for you. But the tuning and tweaking of your sound you can do with this compared to those is just amazing. Plus I love having a gain reduction light on it so you know when it's engaging. Great product, and a great demo! Well done guys!
I learned almost nothing about the product from this review, and I think a lot of that has to do with the lack of comprehension of how this product actually works. For almost the entirety of the demonstration at 6:10, there isn't actually any compression being applied and you are uselessly changing parameters. I also don't know why you chose to demonstrate this pedal with a bunch of soft solo bass arrangements that sound worse with a reduced dynamic range. I think a better review would have included demonstrations on how this pedal can shape transients/tone and how that could be applied in a live setting.
Meters (or even a single LED besides the effect on indicator) on a compressor really help you “see” as well as hear what’s going on with your signal. Empress & Darkglass compressors have excellent meters as well.
Usually your reviews have a high quality and I like them. This time it’s not well done. Changing release and attack without have reached the threshold is useless.
I have this pedal and love it. It's the one I never go without. However, compressors are probably the worst kind of effectsfor these reviews, you don't notice the difference unless you are playing the instrument and handling the knobs yourself.
This compressor is good for high compression ratios and limiting. For something similar in terms of transparency I think the Empress compressors are more suited for general compression that you can just leave on all gig.
Turning the knob clockwise gives a faster attack time - the terminology in the user manual saying turning clockwise gives an "increased attack time" is a bit confusing. What I think is odd is that no matter where the attack knob is, the level of compression doesn't really change. On a standard compressor if you went from a long attack to a short attack you would see a big difference in the level of gain reduction/compression
Yes, the attack knob is actually reversed from a standard compressor practice . I just figured it out lately. It took me years to figure out. How stupid was that, I mean myself and MXR. .....LOL :D
You don't see a difference in gain reduction because the slowest attack is still less than 2ms. On a standard compressor, you would not see a "big difference in the level of gain reduction/compression" unless the attack time was significant compared to the length of the loudest part of the sound.
I've owned one of these for years and honestly I have no idea how to use it. I jerk around with the knobs for a while then turn it off and it sounds better.
As the pedal gets clicked on I literally can't hear any distinction whatsoever. I rewatched each segment with my eyes closed and nothing... What does this pedal actually do..?
What a waste of time. No explanation what the knobs do and you have a bassist playing a bunch of harmonics while you turn knobs. Very poorly thought out.
The noodle he does at 10:20 remembers me A LOT about a song called Unstolen Jewel, from a game called Chrono Chross, please check and you will see that I am correct.
TH-cam makes compressor videos 100% useless... the audio is overall compressed so there is nearly zero difference on my end... I know this can’t be right...
I agree--it's almost impossible to demonstrate compression on a medium that's already compressed. What I need to hear is 20:1 with short attack/long release back-to-back with 4:1 long attack/quick release (which the latter would be very subtle if even perceptible.)
I play light finger style and let my amp do the work, however it sounds like shit when I accidentally pluck hard, can ya recommend a setting where it kicks in when striking loud notes?
I can't answer your question directly, but I can direct you to this video which will help you fix any inconsistencies in your plucking through improving your technique: th-cam.com/video/BpDIyAwYdTE/w-d-xo.html This is very important stuff to learn if you haven't already because, if you try to use a compressor to cover up poor technique, then you may end up changing your tone unintentionally. However, if you're already good at controlling your dynamics and you just need to catch those once-in-a-while flubs, then a compressor could probably help.
@@JeanV1986 Neither could I. And the comments from other users mention this, too. But did you check out other videos about compressors? I am enjoying my Keeley Compressor Pro. It evens out the volume and makes the notes cut through the mix better.
This has to be the most “bass player” comment I’ve read. Compression it’s not something you hear, especially in solo. It’s something that you rather hear in the mix.
No escucho una diferencia sustancial a si no se usase. No entiendo la necesidad de los knobs de output e input, para mí cumplen función de volumen, no le veo el caso de que tenga dos.
Technical question about compressors. with my ampeg amp the low E and A strings are like 2x louder than my d and G strings what kind of compressor would smooth out the volume of all my notes? I'm torn between this compressor and the darkglass
Almost every compressor will smooth out the volume, and almost every comp got it's own character. You gotta pick your own. Judging from those two I would prefer MXR since I was using it and was very very happy with it, but the darkglass is extremely good sounding too I didn't have the opportunity to use it myself in the mix though but also MXR is way cheaper as far as I remember
@@deafprof actually yes, and double check the position of your pickups, low strings might be closer to the pickup and thus - louder. Screwdriver is your friend then.
As always, you did an amazing job here. Thank you for that! I am considering purchasing an compressor but i can't decide between the MXR or the Darkglass Hyper Luminal Comressor. Which one would you prefer? And what are the key differences between these two pedals ? Thank you for your help!
The Darkglass is a hybrid analog-digital pedal which means it is an analog circuit with digital controls so you get all of the brains of a digital pedal with all of the tone of an analog pedal
Es un compresor. Lo que hace es que las notas graves no se saturen y las agudas no sean tan débiles. No da ganancia, balancea la señal Aunque después de 2 años tal vez ya lo hayas descubierto
Oh yes. I probably wouldnt reccomend this one, but bass compression is essential. Its why old jazz bass recording sound so flat and 1 dimensional, all solid bass tones past Jaco Pastorius are achieved (in part) with compression
why is there no heavy picking riffs with maybe some drive post it to demonstrate the way it affect the sound? All demos looks pretty much the same...and they are useless at most.
Good talking, but the demos are useless. In most of cases the gain reduction is not present or, in the last part, is present but constant. Looks like you're playing random with the knobs..
This is one of your worst videos. I learned nothing except there are some pretty good bass players at The Bass Channel who want to show off theirs skills. Just t let Will handle all future videos. He usually does a great job. By the way, l could not hear any difference I the sounds.
These bass demos where the person plays the same cookie cutter style and tone, that literally no modern bass players in bands really use. Not all bass players a solo musicians, this demo tells you nothing about how the pedal would work in the context of a band.
