    You can also dial in some Jaco style chorus with the Flashback. Turn the style to Mod, time close to 0secs and the mix all the way up. It give a nice smooth chorus and doesn't suck out the bottom end.

    Nice applications! I've been doing Moyo passive volume (amazingly simple and handmade in US) -> Boss OC-5 octaver (more options than OC-3) -> Darkglass Alpha Omega distortion -> MXR purple envelope filter (in case you need to Bootsy) -> MXR bass compressor -> MXR booster -> BeatBuddy -> RC-300 looper. Never heard of POG or Freeze so tyvm.

    The Freeze has a mode switch; I think “latch” means you can take your foot off and it still sustains :-) Great Pedals

    Back in the day, I used to plug straight in. The amps are made differently these days. Compression was often built into the amp and/or the bass guitar. I'm looking for a compressor now.

    cannot believe how good that Octaver sounded with the Darkglass! so synthy! but better than any synth. so articulate and musical sounding. i was looking at an electro harmonix micro synth, and a darkglass combo... but damn- that sounded great. (of course, that was an 11,000 bass, not my no-name p-bass so...)

    I needed something with some fuzz that didn't lower my bass levels/get me lost in the mix, both with light fuzz and heavy fuzz. I picked up the Don't Shred on Me from Abominable Electronics and it's one of the best I've ever used. It's a more dial-inable version of The Rat. I use it for any and all styles. Rock, blues, heavy metal... damn, its a monster. It's a guitar pedal I believe, but I can't make a guitar sound good using it to save my life.

    • @mylesdlm
      @mylesdlm 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you tried ehx bass big muff? It has a knob to let your dry signal go through together woth the fuzz tone/ wet signal. Or if not, anything with EQ, or maybe just a preamp, that should save you from getting lost in the mix. Fuzz sounds best with high trebles also but for the bass to come UP the mix, the mids should be upped as well.

      i would say for recording yes, for gigs, home practice, or band practice no. gotta develop that feel during practice and shows. but the recording engineer will appreciate a properly set compressor (they should already have one for you) especially if you're a sloppier player. and yes, if you're an experienced and practiced player, probably don't NEED one.

  • @dsnodgrass4843
    @dsnodgrass4843 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    One of the troubles i've found with a distortion/overdrive is it...sorta removes the "WHOMP' factor, if you will. It flattens out response somehow, so that the bass doesn't 'punch' like it should; especially with distortion-heavy guitarists in the band and lots of crash-work from the drummer. Just my experience.

    • @Farewelltokingz
      @Farewelltokingz ปีที่แล้ว

      Bass distortions tend to be designed to help retain punch with bass boosts or letting you blend in an unaffected sound with the distortion

    I really like the sound the vibe function on the Korg Nuvibe makes. Its a huge pedal with a also huge expression pedal. I had some problems with it because you need a hefty power supply for it which I didn't have at the time and the expression pedal needed some fixing and you can't just use any expression pedal. But now it works it is fantastic.

    Nice to see, that you use EBS octabass, in lots of pedal reviews people use oc-2 or mxr, recently found one guy use 3leafaudio.
    I had mxr but EBS is so fat, really fat.) it was really strange for me that no one use it. So now I just relaxed.)) thank you, man.)

  • @WhySinPie
    @WhySinPie 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    That's basically my pedalboard. Just different brands.
    Boss OC-2 as an octaver, Boss PS-5 for the octave up, Darkglass B7k for the Distortion, Strymon Timeline for the Delay and the freeze. Also got a Mooer radar on there, the Cabsim is nice to have if you pass a DI Signal to FOH if you have Distortion on your DI.

    Thanks for another great video, Scott. What pedal would you recommend if I just want to add a bit of growl to my bass? I'm not interested in anything too metal sounding, just a bit of overdrive, I guess. Thinking about the Boss Bass Driver, any opinions? Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions you, or your viewers can offer.

    I've never been that into effects pedals (when playing in 2 pro bands in my youth) on the bass guitar except for the one which was my Boss Graphic Equaliser to boost certain sounds at certain times, but I always thought of how cool it would be to take my guitarists pedals & play them...
    I did this once & had a ball with the Wah Wah & Distortion (aka Fuzz) pedals along with the digital delay & the compression pedal..
    It was one of those nights in the rehearsal studio & we had our set locked down tight & it was a case of go home early/play the Arcade Machines which the studio had or mess about with each other's instruments & what an interesting & hilarious night we had...
    Now i just play for myself & for the fun of it & once I've paid off my beautiful Pedulla Buzz Fretless Bass Guitar & take delivery of it I'm going to invest in quite a few pedals...
    I always had that innovative side to me but when your playing in a band that's signed up & their looking for hit singles, well that comes first & though I'd experiment in the studio I'd never overstep by bounds & push my overall bass parts above everyone else as we were all there to serve the music & not our egos...
    I'm looking forward to buying the pedals I've already mentioned & having a look at what else is out there as it was different 25 plus year's ago as you only had a certain amount of brands being sold in the UK but now there's plenty to choose from were as before it was predominately Boss along with a few other unknown brands...
    If I could give you any advice on effects pedals on the bass guitar it would be try anything & everything as you may stumble onto a new way of getting your bass lines across & last but my no means least " Have Fun " with it, or what's the point...
    .....

    My choices are, in no particular order;
    1- Compressor
    2- Graphic EQ
    3- Chorus
    4- Overdrive
    5- Fuzz
    I’m thinking about going with a rack mount compressor and EQ because I have them on all the time.
    Does anyone have a thoughts or experience with this?
    Cheers 👍🏻

      Stick with high-end pedals unless you don't mind lugging a rack. I guess it depends on how busy you are. Personally, I like to stay as mobile as possible and keep all my pedals in a small laptop bag. I only pull out the ones I need for the gig but Compression - EQ and Tuner always come out of the bag the rest depends on the needs of the gig. Other pedals in my bag include Fuzz, Octave, Chorus, Reverb, Looper and Pitch Shifter. Once in a rare while I will also throw a Wah Pedal into the bag :)

    • @tallalexander
      @tallalexander 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use the Boss compressor and Boss EQ. When I’m gigging I swap between active and passive basses, so this affects the comp and EQ settings. My thoughts were to get a 2 channel rack comp and a 2 channel EQ and switch the signal chain between the two. I often use a 410 cab, so using rack mount gear and putting my amp in the rack wouldn’t be too much more to lug about. But I’m still not sure.
      I currently use a homemade pedal board that fits into a rucksack, along with all my cables etc. I do like quick set up/pack down time and being mobile.
      Thanks for your thoughts on this 👍🏻

      careful with that rack eq. i had the same idea for guitar but eq and noise gate. i haven't found a rack eq that didn't introduce all kinds of hiss in to my sound. tried a DOD 15 band, and a DBX 15 band. connected them every which way. up front, paralel loop, regular fx loop. no go. apparently you have to match them to your rig pretty precisely. what made noise for me, might not make noise on your rig, and vice versa. tried recording with them and got the same thing. didn't matter where i put them, hiss. and the dbx has a reputation for being quiet! maybe i was doing something wrong, but i tried everything i could think of and nothing on any forum or youtube video helped.

    I play through an old Boss multi-effects pedalboard called an ME-X and it has a pitch shift section so you aren't limited to just an octave. A 4th or 5th down can be a whole lot of fun, especially if you are not really holding down the low end all the time, aka playing along with a synth bass etc. Of course, I'm dying at the lack of addition of a chorus but what do I know, I'm a post-punk bassist who uses multiple pedals and a pick, lol.

    Not really my cup of tea. This seems very focused on effects to use while soloing, which I rarely do. I enjoy a distortion pedal (aguilar Agro is perfect for my needs), a chorus, a flanger, and eventually a compressor. Would like a reverb though from time to time, and maybe an octave pedal (i sold my aguilar octamizer though). And yeah, an eq pedal is also great to have every once in a while. 😊

    Scott, as some others have said, where is the compressor? Playing live, to me a compressor is a must. I have the Boss BC 1X and find it a superb digital no- noise piece of kit. . .

    Hi Scott. Wondering what you think of compression. Don't need it because your articulation is giving you what you want? Also, what about digital versus analog effects. What do you think? Thanks.

    Compression, chorus, and tube crunch (Ampeg SVT tone if you’re not lugging around a big damn refrigerator). And a tuner if you don’t have something built in to your amp or rack.
    What else would you ever need?

    I Am So Glad i quit trying to make my guitar sound like a synthesizer, ( the first attempts were expensive, and painful, enough )
    i ended up just getting into soft-synths, keys, and eventually a Linnstrument 128 .... i don't need octave effects, i just need bass guitar to sound like bass guitar, and guitar to sound like guitar.

      @@devinebass guitarist drummer synth, generally; i have had basses, and i made a really awesome custom bass that got stolen in Seattle ... i have a UA Apollo Twin, and just going with a plugin rig this time...Hi-Z ---> Gallien-Krueger 800RB, Fairchild 660, SPL Vitalizer MK2-T, Dytronics Tri-Stereo Chorus.
      i already have the 660 and SPL, and the chorus i have several reasons to get. so it's just an extra bass amp plugin.

      Mi Pe I’m like Scott. The octaver for low subby sounds & the pog for up shiny solo passages. Btw, Compressor is a must too.

    • @slavesforging5361
      @slavesforging5361 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it sounded like the Pog was a nice jazz solo octave pedal, and the Octaver was a synth/edm style octave pedal. i get why you'd want both. they sound way different, and they influenced his playing to be completely different as well. for a session or fill in bassist, it makes sense to snag both. for someone playing one dedicated style of music, not so much. (except for silly fun practice/jam- which... fuck yeah).

  • @brettmarlar4154

    I'm surprised you didn't have an envelope filter in the mix. Just for that classic "Chameleon on Headhunters" vibe. (For when you don't have a keyboardist.) Just add a pinch of overdrive and you're there! The Pog with the freeze would sound pretty awesome as well! Providing that the POG can track polyphonic parts without any issues.
