    Why would anyone give this a thumbs down? The guy is giving you a great synopsis of what’s in a 500 page document that you don’t have to read! Thanks, 51 Drones, for doing the homework, saving us all time and confusion, and passing along some very useful information.

      One reason would be for being so narrow minded & dismissive to the value of a FRIA (6:40). Having the FRIA option & the improvements that were made regarding FRIAs are very good things. If it had not been for RC Modelling, which happened at recognized & established flying sites, "Drones" would not have been invented. They are an offshoot from RC Helicopters.
      FRIAs are GREAT for experimentation, innovation or for learning how to fly. They will be crucial in building "Remote Control Flying Communities" They will be instrumental for Youth Educational Programs & for the future of Aviation. Not to mention the "Drone Racing" Community would prefer the options of having less weight on their performance aircraft.

      You already know thieves and trouble makers will be staking out certain areas looking for drones/controllers and other camera equipment to steal. If you are in a remote area (most flyers), whats stopping them from subduing you and landing your own drone back to your location and stealing it. Why the FAA would allow controller tracking to the GENERAL PUBLIC is beyond me, the majority of hobbyists and professionals didn't want that feature.

They don't want adsb out on drones because it'll overwhelm the adsb receivers in airplanes. they don't want airplane pilots looking out for drones as they want it to be the other way around. I do agree with your sentiment that it's overreaching and generally a bunch of BS.

    Those modules for legacy are gonna be a major hassle, if they will even work at all. The FAA states the modules MUST prevent the drone from taking off if it's not transmitting it's ID information, which I don't even see how that would be possible with legacy drones. I consider myself a safe and responsible drone pilot and follow all the rules, but I WILL NOT be using Remote ID on my drones unless the pilot location broadcasting is removed or hidden from the general public. It's absolutely insane the FAA thinks it's ok for the general public to have that information and be able to confront/assult drone pilots! If the FAA really wants people to follow the rules and get the license and everything else, the FAA needs to actually start DEFENDING drone pilots, not just making rules and handing out fines. Start punishing people that harass and interfere with drones or drone pilots, confront cities and counties that think they own the airspace and use stupid laws preventing drones where they should be legal according to FAA airspace rules.

    • @legodragonxp
      @legodragonxp 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ok, so here is my question: How is your drone going to know that it is transmitting the data required to allow it to power up? A hard wired feedback loop? An transmitter receiver system? Maybe I need to protect this $50 part by surrounding it in a mesh wire cage in case it crashes.

    • @jpsalis
      @jpsalis 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The concern is the weight itself, not the speed they can achieve imo. a 600g quad travelling at 50 mph does a whole lot more damage than a quad sitting pretty around 250 at the same speed.

    • @CarbonGlassMan
      @CarbonGlassMan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jpsalis I know but I don't believe this has anything to do with property damage or safety. It's about control and eventually having the ability to sell the airspace to the big companies that want it to make money off of. They can't afford for a delivery drone to get hit by a 200 gram rc aircraft and drop out of the sky. They'll sell it to the masses as a safety concern but I don't recall any stories of innocent bystanders being hospitalized by drones. Even if it was about safety, eventually 3 inch quads will commonly be able to exceed 100mph. Some already can.

      "Why do guns, devices meant to kill, have less restrictions and a constitutional amendment going for them while drones have to be regulated to the extent that recreational and commercial operators, who rarely, if ever, intend to terrorize or kill individuals? Why do firearms have similar restrictions to buying furniture while drones have similar restrictions to operating nuclear power plants?"

Why do firearms have similar restrictions to buying furniture while drones have similar restrictions to operating nuclear power plants?"
      It's simply an absurd set of rules for a trivial issue in the United States. No people have ever died to civilian use of drones, and it's already illegal for civilians to weaponize drones. Many countries already recognize this; even China's communist party has not implemented remote ID and doesn't appear to plan to.

    After some additional reflection I have some suggestions. But first, Russ, I was remiss earlier by not thanking you for doing the research, reading these long, arduous and mind numbing documents, and providing insight to those of us in the drone community who want to learn and have a desire to operate within the rules. Now, for my suggestions:
    (1) The FAA is best influenced by public opinion and bad press. We need to engage with major news organizations to get our concerns elevated to a level where the FAA feels compelled to take a more thoughtful approach
    (2) When bad things do happen as a result of these new rules we as a community need to do our best to hold the FAA accountable
    (3) I know several groups have litigation pending. They’ve just been waiting for the new rules to be placed in the federal register, which will likely happen in January 2021. We - the drone community - need to support these legal efforts. I would encourage creating GoFundMe sites to provide these trailblazers with the cash they will need to take on the Federal Government
    (4) Finally, the drone community needs an association that can speak to these topics with a single voice. I believe there are a couple out there already. I suggest these groups come together as one, promote their prominence and value to those in the community who are not already members, and lobby our government officials on the issues that matter most to us. We’re small fish in a big commercial pond. We will not get what we want/need if we do not come together.
    Thanks again Russ for all your great work. You’re one of the best out there on TH-cam. Here’s hoping you have a healthy, safe, prosperous and Zoom free New Year.

      Randomized aircraft hex codes are going to be a thing soon. You’ll have to pay or it more than likely, which I don’t agree with, but the FAA has been working on anonymity with ADS-B for a few years now. At this time you can go to a site like adsbexchange.com and track any aircraft in the world as long as it has a transponder and is being pinged by a ground station. However, soon, it may be difficult, if not impossible to know whose aircraft it is whether it be a Gulfstream 750 or a Phantom 4 pro, etc.

It's far from clear to me that people on the ground will be able to receive this signal unless the UAV is pretty close and not moving much.

    Hi Russ, I have a question. Reading the current ruling, do you believe that manufacturers can comply with the Remote ID Module (option 2) requirements for legacy drones simply by issuing a firmware update? Most DJI products already have the hardware necessary to gather GPS and telemetry data needed to meet the needs of Remote ID, so it may just become a question of whether a given drone model has the required Bluetooth and/or WiFi transmitter right? If DJI issued such a firmware update, does the drone become a Standard drone, i.e. option 1, or is it still option 2 as it wasn’t originally manufactured with native Remote ID capabilities?

    This is a good summary, thank you for your effort to keep UAV Pilots informed. I can see both sides of the controversy over the Pilot Location Issue and believe that the reason for this rule is indeed valid...
    Back in the late '80s I started learning to fly...it was fun until we nearly had a mid-air collision. Neither my Instructor or I saw the other plane... and the ATC was unaware of it's presence in Controlled Airspace... from that moment I learned that the more Eyes you have looking out for the 'other guy' that might take YOU out the Safer EVERYONE is.
    It doesn't matter if I was Flying, operating a Locomotive or a Motorcoach, or even my own pickup... I still believe Everyone is Safer with some sort of Co-Pilot and if you want to ride along with me, you better understand that you have to keep Your Eyes Peeled, too because NEITHER OF US IS PERFECT!!!
    So, take a Buddy with you...if for no other reason than to distract 'Karen' while you fly ... and dial 911 before she does.

    I see the Remote ID working a lot like a transponder in any aircraft but really don't like broadcasting my location in the blind to anyone. If it has to be, make it secure the information so just FAA could see it and law enforcement. I don't understand any logical reason to transmit the pilot's physical location to the public. Will cause an unsafe environment for the pilots and the public since we will have to watch our backs while flying. FAA has a lot of work to do.

    Not everybody replaces their aircraft every 3 years.
    I have been building model aircraft for over 50 years and multirotors since before DJI sold a Ready To Fly Drone.
    There are 32 fixed wing aircraft and 12 rotorcraft in my workshop and all have flown within the last 2 years.
    I just got a Mavic Air but every one of my other drones was hand built by me.
    Several of those fixed wings are over 40 years old and have flown in Japan, Oman, Egypt, and Diego Garcia.
    This morning I flew an 8 year old F-450 quadcopter frame with DJI Naza Controller with Gopro.
    After landing I flew a 40" wingspan acrobatic model.
    Model aircraft flyers have coexisted with full scale aviation since before the Wright brothers.
    What is happening now is silly, asinine, and a bureaucratic waste.
    I believe that most people will IGNORE the FAA UAV rules just as they INGORED the FCC and their CB Radio rules.

    Yet another great review of the new rules by another TH-camr; thank you! I read all of the document also and it's yet another quagmire of legal jargon written by hired lawyers (Par for the course for FARs.😉) I must add that there doesn't seem to be any clear guidance for FPV racers. I can't find provisions allowing for spotters or other means to satisfy the requirement for flying line of sight only. Pretty silly for obvious reasons! Furthermore, those who'll fly at a club, the 12 month deadline for registering for a FRIA is removed and there is no intention for phasing out FRIAs as originally proposed. Also, there is no allowance for those who don't equip that don't fly at a club field. I like that you brought up concerns for protecting individual pilot's safety from angry tattletalers. There is also a danger of violating UAV pilots rights under the law! The FAA seems to be indifferent about this and expect everyday laymen to educate other laymen what the FARs demand. I would hazard to guess that when one is working in the safety of a FSDO or a cushy office in DC ,the agents think "Eh! those other guys will figure it out". Blue skies and happy flying my friend! 🙂

    Great content, thank for your time on this. One idea that I commented to FAA that they apparently did not pick up on but may still be implemented would be to have the code being broadcasted split into two segments. The first segment would contain basic drone data like an ID number or session number that would be available any cell phone inquiring. The full data with controller location would be only available to law enforcement and some other 3rd party monitor. So someone sees a drone they can get the ID/session number and call the law or they can pay a fee and perhaps get the info. When they do pay, the 3rd party sends the drone operator a record of who inquired and perhaps real time notification. Just a thought. Super complex it is.

So flying RC in designated flying sites is common and we will likely experience little interference. Now my fun rant that will likely rattle a few of your viewers. Frankly if a few people don't like or don't want to carefully share the airspace and they feel the FAA shouldn't impede with flying their toy flying cameras they will just stop flying all together, that will be better for the rest of us. I for one don't want careless uninformed yahoos out there anyway. It seems like those who know the least will sound off with the loudest complaints. OK, as I said this should rattle a few :)

    I am a beginner, and wanted to get into the hobby. I purchased a DJI FPV drone. After buying it, I realized that I had to register the drone, pass a test, and now these Remote ID regulations. Frankly, is not worth my time. The risks are simply too great. I am a reasonable person and would not do all the stupid things that prompted the creation of these regulations, but the entire hobby is ruined for me.
    The good news, I am still within the return window, so back it goes. I will stick to below 250 grams quads, and fly mostly indoors.
    Thank you for a very informative video.

      @TakeDeadAim So, how exactly will “everyone be able to identify” someone flying a UA that is not broadcasting its telemetry to anything other than the pilot’s tx (i.e. doesn’t have a remote ID module), like my current fleet of non-DJI drones? Your logic is flawed.

      @TakeDeadAim Do you know your way around “binding” of radio signal frequencies? Also, Joe Civilian and Joe Police Officer will not have the equipment technically capable of triangulating the position of either the aircraft or the tx. Beside which, Joe Police Officer will have “drone nuisance complaint” at the bottom of their response priority list. But hey, drop the hobby or fly 100-ft figure eights at your local AMA field... it’s (still) a free country. 😎

    I'm curious your take on Part 107 for those who want to fly sub-250 grams routinely. It seems like if you do not have a part 107, those craft are exempt. But if you do, then all drones require it. For example, if you have your Part 107, how will that affect tiny whoops? What about small toothpick drones? When I originally that remote ID would apply for those with part 107 even under 250 grams, that would seem like a disadvantage of getting a Part 107. Am I missing something?

    An excellent summary and analysis as always. The only thing I disagree with entirely is the section about destroying the toy drone market.
    There are already under 250 gram toy grade drones on the market. Lots of them. From some of the same companies that have made toys for years. And they’ve got a suite of features too like GPS, altitude hold, etc.
    America wasn’t the only market of interest to deal with so they have been getting ready with these drones for a while now. So as long as the 250g stays, they’ll be fine.
    The problem is that they may just end up lowering or eliminating the 250g exclusion in the future. Japan already did lower theirs, as an example. The rush to create amazing under 250g drone could ironically become the death of that unrestricted category.

    Thanks for the awesome overview! Quick question...
    You mentioned the older Mavic drones (original pro, pro platinum, ... ) would have to have the retrofitted module.
    Does that mean that the new DJI drones, Mavic air 2, pro 2 etc would be compliant under option 1 and not need the module?
