    Complete Written Recipe
    Ingredients
    ¼ Cup of Oil
    ½ Cup Sugar for buns
2 cups sugar for Coconut Cream Sauce
6-7 cups of self raising flour
2 cups of warm water for buns
1 cup cold water for each coconut cream can
    2 cans of coconut cream
    4 tsp yeast
    2 eggs
    1) Mix the yeast, 2 cups warm water and ½ cup of sugar to activate the yeast and set for 10mins
    2) Crack eggs in a separate bowl, mix with oil and add the yeast/warm water mix to the bowl. Mix the wet ingredients well
    3) Add most of the flour and mix with wooden spoon. Eventually you can use your hands to mix the dough together. Add the rest of the flour as well.
    4) Add oil to pan and hands then place in a warmed oven for 10mins to allow to rise.
    5) Pour 2 coconut cream cans, 2 cups cold water and 2 cups sugar to a separate bowl and mix. Put this aside to add later
    6) Add flour to surface and bring out dough to roll out.
    7) Roll out the dough and brush with the coconut cream. Cut into strips and roll up into swirly buns.
    8) Warm oven to 180 degrees and place in the oven to bake for about 10-20mins. Once you see they turn golden brown, add coconut cream.
    9) Be sure to constantly brush over the top of the buns with coconut cream mix to give it a gloss.
    10) After 20-30mins, they should be ready. Be sure to bring out to cool then serve!
    Serves 6 people.

My mom uses another method that is very delicious as well. She pours the coconut mixture over the rolled dough and allows them to rise a second time soaking in the mixture and then bakes them. Scrumptious

I met my wife because I made pani popo. I am palagi and my wife is 'afakasi. I haven't made it in years, but when I did I used frozen dough that I let rise overnight. I then added a can of coconut milk and a can of sweet coconut cream (half when it goes in to the oven and half when it comes out). As they say in Hawaii "broke da mouth"

Kia Ora Veni. My whanau love your recipe of pani popo. Every other weekend my brother would go to the market to buy 2 trays of 6 coconut buns. We would half each bun so there would be enough to go around. I have found and tried many recipes. We have enjoyed them all, but I needed to tell you your recipe has been the easiest quickest and the best ever . I make it often for my family and there is enough for each person to have 1 or 2 whole buns. Thank you so much for this recipe. Bless you for sharing.

Pani popo (coconut buns) is about $20-$30+ for a pan depends where you buy it. This is one of my daughter's favorite Sāmoan foods beside fai'ai fe'e n fa'alifu Kalo.

Hi Veni, i made this a week ago but the pani had a strong yeast taste. I am making this again with 1 less tsp of yeast today to see if it makes a difference. You're right about the sauce, 2x cans is needed! I also cut back on sugar as my mom is diabetic. When i cut up the dough to do the buns, i let it sit and rise again in the pan before putting it in the oven to bake. Added the coconut sua near the end, brushed the tops and it turned out great! Thanks again for this recipe!

      Here's the recipe:
I used less yeast and also sugar due to diabetic mother (our family is used to cutting sugar down in baking recipes, but maybe others will need the full 2 1/2 cups of sugar):
      1/4 cup Oil
      1 1/2 cup Sugar
      6-7 cup Self Raising Flour
      2 cup Warm Water
      2x cans Coconut Cream
      3 teaspoons Yeast
      2x Eggs
