Train the mind to feel the forms of nature, and the eye would follow its path, making your drawings feel more solid. Try this mental exercise to simplify a complex form, such as the head, into organized planes which would contain smaller forms and details.

Great advice from a great artist. Cesar, thanks so much for taking the time and effort to make these videos available. I’m originally from Peru and I also speak Spanish. But living in the US, 95% of the time you have to use the English language. So, I truly appreciate the videos in English to keep up with the daily life in art. Blessings and take care. Greetings from Champaign, Illinois.

Nice explanation! I like how you talk about thinking about a concept beforehand rather than just trying to paint everything you see. David Leffel describes he thinks of a concept and a goal before doing anything on the canvas as well. That way, as long as the concept is complete, you know when the painting is done, rather than losing yourself in unnecessary details. One of his students wrote: "The student paints things, the mature artist paints ideas about things or concepts"

Bravo maesto!! This is exactly what I am going to be teaching and demonstrating in Virginia this November (at F.A.C.E.). I'm fond of saying that a painting is the result of a conversation between the artist, the model and the materials.

You were so kind to respond, and told me if i were ever there again, would give me a personal tour of the Academy!!! Heading there this summer, Lord willing! When and where will you be teaching In Virginia? What is required to attend? and any other details if you get this comment? I live in North Carolina, just across state lines.I would love to attend!

I see art students and instructors,
    struggling on details,
    and suffering with distortions,
    They skip using a framework,
    and waist time.
    They build an exoskeleton,
instead of an abbreviation of the skeleton.
Everything is built with a foundation.
Using a frame work in how it is done.
It is a disservice to teach other wise.
those that want to learn and want to advance,
are restrained by not doing so.
It is a stage secret because it goes unseen,
    covered with paint or erased,
framework takes time to explain and,
    non artist are not interested.
keeping the it secret, keeps student returning to lessons.

I have much better exercise for those who really want to become The Artists: take an old chair you will find on the street (you can use an old shoe as well, but the chair is much better because it has all those planes more easily recognisable), take it to your studio space, and try to make the visual story about this chair and fall in love with it! Can you easily do it? Imagine now you are taking a complete stranger to your studio trying to create his/her portrait!!! what will you be able to say about that person??Yes, you can easily train yourself to make a proper copy of his/her facial planes according to a latest fashionable painting style and the rules of light, but can you call yourself The Artist by doing so? 🙏🏼💙🤙🏼

Cesar, in what point is different to work from a photo, and work from a master painting? I got kinda confused. :(

    • @santocesart
      @santocesart  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

In all the points my friend. A master's painting was constructed from the mind. With the concept of lines, arbitrary lighting, natural design, and emotional colors, plus the aspect of art evolution. A photo is just a cold impression of an instant, nothing to do with art
