Henry Cavill Explains Everything You Need To Know About The Witcher's Swords | The Witcher | Netflix
/ netflix
Geralt of Rivia, a mutated monster-hunter for hire, journeys toward his destiny in a turbulent world where people often prove more wicked than beasts.
I like how passionate Geralt is in the role of Henry Cavill. Pretty surprising for a guy without emotions. 100 on speech skill!
Hmm....
I would like to give you an award for this comment.
That's why it's the perfect role 😂
Surprise to see him dye his hair dark and cut it
Surprise to see him dye his hair dark and cut it
I get the impression that no-one asked him to do these. He just turned up at the studio with a few he'd made and said "hey do you wanna put these on TH-cam or something?"
I love that he's a huge fan of the books and games. That passion really shone through in the first season, and in the interviews he's done about the show.
I believe too he volunteered giddily to do this
Yeah, and it's clear that he knows what he's talking about. Not sure about his two co-stars however.
@@martinmallet3983 considering he's almost 10+ years older than both (if you mean yennefer and ciri, Anya is 24 and freya is 19) yeah, he definitely has more experience. Plus, playing the games and reading the books helps enforce it. Everyone casted did great in my opinion, but that's just it, it's an opinion. Can be swayed any way depending on the person.
Justin Kaplan I totally agree that they all did a great job in the series. I was so impressed by the two girls. The age difference is a factor. He's clearly a fan of the series. I'm just saying that the girls are not because in various interviews they never answer questions in depth like Cavill does. But that doesn't mean that they can't do amazing performances.
@@martinmallet3983 alright, we are in agreement. It just seemed to me we weren't by your phrasing in the previous comment. Not all actors take the same approach into studying their character, but they can still deliver a great performance given the director's vision and input. I rescind my previous comment. 😁
The fact that Henry Cavil asked for a redesign of the hilt so that it would better fit Geralt's fighting style is amazing to me.
If they had followed the design of the swords in the games it wouldnt have been a problem in the first place.
leonard well the series is based on the books tho
actually, I think he did that so it can look like SIlver Sword in the game
Make Henry director next time, then the show will be actually logical and faithful to the books like it was supposed to be.
He should have also asked for redesign of the nilfguardian armour... And recast of triss and fringilla.
Henry Cavill should start a series where he just explains things.
Very articulate and such a soothing voice...
He’s so knowledgeable about the Witcher lore because he himself is a huge gamer and fan of the witcher game series, and he read the books as well.
I'd love some kind of TH-cam series where he just explains what he knows about video game lore.
Explains how to make a gaming device

The fact that he cares so much about the subject matter makes him literally the best person in the world to play this part
He’s truly a fan of the series and living the dream.
It's one thing to cast a fan, it's another thing to cast a very good actor who happens to be a fan: Henry really lucked out, I'd say!
Fact
@@blueroninstudios No. WE lucked out IMO.
It wouldn't even surprise me if these explanation videos were actually Henry's idea :D
God Henry must be having the greatest time of his life in this show.
it's always great when actors and actresses get to play a part they personally long to play, they always go the extra mile for it and enjoy what they're doing!
I heard he do a lot of side mission to perfect his role! You can search it up, It's cost a delay in production
Well There will 7seasons long
As a proper nerd, he has.. He played the Witcher games at least two times over, before he even heard about the filming project..
He came up with the sword suggestions, he spoke with the rough voice to give a nod to the great voice actor on the games...
Oh and by the way, did you know that Henry Cavill plays D&D and paints miniatures since decades? :D
Nah boy the game is 3000× better. Geralds sword🙄 ya know geralt have hundrets of swords
I want a video of Henry just talking about his experience playing the games. What choices does he make? What armor does he like? I'm sure he could talk for hours on the subject lol
I agree but that'd be quite strange to see in a Netflix video. Netflix and CDPR would have to do some sort of collaboration, it'd have to be part of some third party interview or something.
Griffin armor for fighting, bear armor for looks
How many pushups did he do? WHAT KIND OF JUICE DID HE DRINK!!?
@@Superfly9999 best looling armor was skellege armor but i liked the viper armor also bear was ok but that skirts annoyes me

Imagine having an actor so dedicated to the roll such as this, and then letting him go precisely because he is too dedicated. Netflix dropped the ball with this series and Henry Cavill deserved much, much better
Yes, and I hate to say it being a woman (who supports other women), but if you watch Netflix' making of series, it becomes VERY obvious who of the two (showrunner or Henry) is the culturally (and otherwise) ignorant one. Just watch him pronounce Sapkowskis name perfectly well, and she is just saying "Andrew" all the time.. it's revolting, ignorant, and frankly, hurtful. A true facepalm moment.
they didnt let him go. he left
Netflix: How many vids do fans want of Henry explaining things?
Fans: Yes.
The worst part is, this proves the show failed to explain a lot of stuff. I've never seen this happen before. A show come out and, weeks after, the cast and crew need to explain this awful lot of things (I'm not talking just about these videos) because it was poorly explained (or not mentioned at all!) on the actual show. Pretty weird.

His costars say he's a "walking encyclopedia" of Witcher facts- having read everything and involved with the writers, he's completely immersed himself in the role.
He just seems like a great guy too.
@Tweed Penguin They really don't all do that, I doubt RDJ knows a whole lot about the Iron Man comics, especially to the extent Henry Cavill knows The Witcher. However I also think he's just particularly interested in The Witcher and probably played the games before being offered the role, maybe even read the books.
@@BilboSwagginsTheThird I remember some interview material from after the show and casting was announced and he talked about it. He'd played 2 and 3 before and was a big fan and I believe he read the books as well, or he read them in preparation for the role. So yeah he already had more knowledge and passion for the source material before even taking the role than many similar actors will acquire in preparation
He is literally and figuratively a gigantic nerd.
@Sakaba There are exceptions though, I know that Jon Bernthal done a lot of reading for his role as The Punisher, and got a lot of solid advice from his local comic book store about the backround of the character. May be a part of the reason that the series was so damn good.
@Noah Parkes As far as I remember, he read the books after getting the role, but before any production started.
@@Demoliri He read the book after meeting the showrunner, at which point the casting process hadn't even begun yet, and Henry Cavill only got called to audition after they went through casting but still hadn't found anyone suitable.
"made from meteorite, which is stronger and more durable than steel"
*Superman cries*
Meteoric steel, but yes.
Kryptonite
In the real world it's not true, as meteoric iron contains so many impurities that it's a massive pain in the arse to deal with - you basically have to go full Japanese smithing with the amount of extra folding and working that you have to do to homogenise it. Even when you do, all you've made is a normal steel sword with some pretty patterns that will come out with etching, and if you don't fold, you end up with a broken sword because of the inconsistency of the material.
On the other hand, it's properly iconic, and it's such a capital-R Romantic aesthetic. Plus, in fiction, it doesn't matter at all. If the author says it's stronger, then, in universe, it is.
@DarkEternal6 exactly, all due to having crap material, which meteoric iron is. I only mention the Japanese because their steel was so awful for so long that folded steel has become a bit of a touchstone, I was hoping to loop it all together to emphasize just how "meh" meteoric swords would be IRL. Not to take anything away from the Norse or other historical bladesmiths, but the historical Japanese are more famous than them for it and there's a chance that it might help a reader draw the connection I was going for in a parallel to my comment
@@TAP7a Love your post! A metallurgist would say that meteorite iron would not be superior to modern steel (such as Hitachi Blue or White) But in the author's universe? It's the Shizz with a capital SHI! And the literature is meant to cast our minds (as a modern reader) to the time when meteorite iron was the most expensive, most rare material to make weapons from. It was considered to come from the gods, and only the most wealthy could afford to commission the very best craftsmen to create them a signature weapon from it. Knowing what little I do about ancient meteorite weapons, I could completely buy into the author's take on their mystique.

Don't say it was your pleasure, because let's be honest, the pleasure is ours😂
Let's be honest, he asked for the slanted hilt so it could look more like the games. Henry Cavill, a true gamer and fan!
Is it just me or are they really short for "longswords"?
Nah he is just really big and it look small to us about 90 centimeters!
@@xuannguyenpham1715 if that is the entire swords length that is small a typical longswords blade is around 110 to 150 cm.
Actually, he was spot on with why he went for a slanted hilt. Any time a straight crossguard gets much beyond 10 cm in width, it starts hitting the wrist and restricting mobility. With a slanted guard, you can have the extra coverage from a wide crossguard without restricting mobility
It might actually be designed like that in the games for the same reason, to prevent the hilt from clipping into Geralt's model. A bit of a reach, but a possibility.
This man’s presence, his aura, posture, his command over language... the ability to look like a well trained witcher capable of going multiple rounds with mythical monsters even when standing there as Henry and not as Geralt... its astounding. He was perfect for the role of Geralt, and he was perfect for the role of Superman... unfortunately for him one of those roles did not accompany a strong script, director, or support... and I’m not talking about the role of Geralt... It only goes to show how amazing this person’s skills are and how successful this show has been and will be with him as the lead with the fact that it was renewed for a second season even before the first one was released for viewing on netflix.
You're a man of culture, my dude! Your username plus what you just said about Henry says it all. xD I couldn't agree more...
Geralt: I shouldn't get involved in the affairs of men.
Also Geralt: *gets involved in the affairs of men*
Not by choice though
Video game Geralt is most notorious for doing this. It wasn’t always by choice, but most players would make the choice for him to get involved whenever they could, and Geralt would have to rationalize it later.
@@MrJH101 Yep, that's the difficult part about being a game protagonist: the character's personality can easily conflict with the player's. Besides, it's so much more engaging and interesting to be involved in affairs, more often than not, than to not get involved
TheGospelgamer yup, no arguments there because I’m admittedly one of those people. I generally wanted my game’s depiction of Geralt to stay impartial and neutrally detached from the affairs of mankind. But whenever things were happening right in front of me, I just couldn’t help myself from getting Geralt involved. And whether you do or don’t choose to get involved, Geralt will always somehow be willing to rationalize your choice for him in the dialogue.
Hell there's even a point in the books where he renounces being a witcher and breaks his fucking sword lol

In a few years time I can see Henry Cavill going into directing. He delves deep into the mythology of the characters he plays that I think he could be a good director.
Casting Henry Cavill as Geralt might be the greatest casting choice in the history of cinema (or tv technically), I mean the like ratio speaks for itself.
Very smart choice. Especially with him already being a huge fan
They didn't cast him... Henry told his agent to get him the role as soon as he heard that Netflix was going to do the show.
Wut? Pikachu yeah but they did have to ultimately choose to cast him. Just cause your agent says you’re interested doesn’t mean you immediately get the role

The sheer ENTHUSIASM in this man's eyes made my day. Possibly even my week. I am so glad Henry got to play a character he obviously loves very deeply!
People:"He's so passionate about the character."
Henry in other interviews:"I finished The Witcher 3 several times before being offered the role."
and after getting the role he learned about the books...
and read them in a short time. sometimes mixing them
Doesn't show. Maybe he's passionate and hardcore but s1 is utter _shit_ . It's probably the directors fault because ALL characters and all plot lines were shit. I played all three games, the third the most and my gf never heard of it. We _both_ gave up on like ep 7 and stopped watching because how horribly fucking cringe and bad everything was. Every character, every scene. We both hated it and I stand by it still. It was a shit production and henry I'm sorry but you make a truly horrible Geralt..
@@ottojagenstedt9740 dude please stop. None of the games are canon. The games are BASED on the novels, which I highly suggest you read. CD Projekt Red has confirmed this. Season one was practically word for word out of the first Witcher book which was itself a collection of short stories about geralt. If you read the books and still don’t like the show, fine, but do NOT use the games as canon in that judgement.
Edited for typos

Well done, Henry. I'm looking forward to seeing more of you as the Witcher.
We really need one of him reading Witcher thirst tweets.
that video would have a 2 h 30 min running time
Buzzfeed has you covered.
@@bacardichasers that’s it?
He seems really uncomfortable doing those so maybe not
Dude...That disgusting. Imagine if I suggest Freya or Anya to do this. People would already wish me to die.
Henry Cavill, the most successful “the Witcher” fan out there.
I wish more actors were as passionate about their roles as Henry is. He's a fucking legend.
I agree. It always bugs me when actors don't don't seem as invested in a movie they starred in as I am as a viewer - unable to answer basic interview questions about other characters, lore and such. It's like they just come on the set, act out their scenes, cash the check and move on.
Having Henry as the Witcher is literally a gift. Some would say, he is our Destiny. I had no idea how much I would fall for this character. I can honestly say that I don't think anyone else would even shave the surface compared to what Mr. Cavill has done.

Netflix, I really hope you have a lot more of these "Henry Cavill Explains" or "Henry Cavill Breaks Down" videos because I won't be satisfied until you give us at least 1 per day for a straight month.
Genuinely can't imagine anyone else in the role. So, yes, he was the right choice.
I’m so glad they found someone passionate about the series like him. The first play through of the Witcher 3 is magical and life changing. It makes me so happy that they found an actor that knew and cared about that magic, enough so to be beyond a perfect fit for the role.
I’m an idiot. I never realized that Renfris broach was on Geralts sword.
Same
The best part is when you realize it makes Geralt's sword have a smiley face when it's put away.
It's in the crafting recipe.
because it never was on Geralt’s sword
Omg me neither
Henry protecc
Henry attac
But most of all, he makes the monsters fall bacc
Henry Cavill’s a fanboy who is truly living his dream.
Henry was the ideal cast in every possible aspect.
I love how he looks in his element when he explains these thing about The Witcher, like he has really put on effort to play Geralt's part, to know every single thing, and he makes all this so interesting. I'd really love if he explained more about the series, since I and many others haven't read the books and many things left me with a question mark because I didn't understand what's this or that. I believe there are a lot of to open up a bit. Sure, I could check them from the internet, but Henry makes the learning more fun.
Apart from this, I just have to say how absolutely AMAZING Henry's fighting style in the series was! I don't believe I've seen any character fighting with such a style (at least I can't come up with anybody). Usually in medieval movies men's fighting with sword is a bit stiff and and just smashing their sword with force with additional roars and dodges, not saying it isn't cool or talented! But it's just the.. usual. Geralt on the other hand is just something else entirely. It's really like he's dancing, so light and graceful with quick steps and spins that the sword looks very light in his hands. I was just absolutely entranced. Can't wait for the season two!
Eveliina Orava play the games madam! I built a computer rig for my daughter just to play it. Geralt is a complex man, YOU make his decisions in the game. A lot of romance, betrayal and political intrigue. I am always interested in a females view of what geralt must endure. Plus, because your decisions carry so much weight, what you do affects the story in ways you just can’t predict. If that’s too much for you, I don’t blame you, but man, what a great story and adventure.
P.s. start with whitcher 3. No previous games needed for story sake, flashbacks handle that. Sorry to bother!!!
Eveliina Orava that’s the fighting style of his witcher school: the wolf, designed for fighting multiple opponents, one opponent with multiple limbs or an opponent that can disappear and reappear, however it’s true strength is also the reason for the name of his school: the wolf which by itself is formidable but in groups they are a force to be reckoned with
Yes as another poster said it's from his Witcher school. It's in the books and games ans involves a lot of spinning, rolling, and pirouettes. Like dancing
Eveliina Orava awesome post eveliina!! Hardcore Witcher fans love see what people new to the world think. His fighting style is awesome!!
There's a very good energy here where Henry seems very happy and grateful for the role and the fans are all very happy and grateful that they somehow got Henry Cavill in it.
It's nice.
If I wasn’t already in love with Henry Cavill, then The Witcher has solidified that love.
Its always nice to see an actor who is authentically enthusiastic about his role.
Henry should do a Witcher 3 live playthrough dressed as Geralt.
Hell of idea, good thinking 👍
Also a read through of the entire novel series.
Hmm...

OMG YES, NICE IDEA SIR, MAKE THIS VIRAL
He is so passionate about this role, can’t imagine anyone else playing Geralt other than him
The thing I love most about Henry Cavill is how quickly I am discovering that he is in fact a big fat nerd.
Wow the commitment he has to his job is unbelievable. He learnt to fight, wield a sword, horse ride and works out a phenomenal amount
This series is one of the finest out there.. main protagonist played by one of the finest out there
It's official, I have a major crush on this guy. He's geeky, charming, intelligent and passionate. He's the best!

No, Henry. Thank YOU for knowing and loving this story and this character.
I love the way he explains things, he has a great way of explaining and is really clear in what he says, his accent is beautiful. Even a non native English speaker can understand him very well. I just love him in every way.
Thanks for your lovely comment... You are loved top fan, I will love to know you deeply message me on my email henrycavill2343@gmail.com

You can always tell when an actor is actually a fan of the material.
He sounds so passionate when he's talking. Sooo happy for him that he got that job because he deserved it.
I wish all actors playing fantasy characters had at least a fraction of Henry Cavill's passion for their projects. In fact, I think it should be a requirement, part of an actor's research into a role.
*other series* "we need a devoted expert to ensure we have proper understanding of the universe and continuity" *the witcher* "yeah uh we just got Henry with a shit ton of books and a PC"
Netflix: so Henry we need you to brush up on the Witcher lore for your new role so go out read the books and play the games again.
Henry: you son of a bitch, I'm in
@@themadhammer3305 According to interviews, he did not even need to brush up much. The guy is Witcher fan.

What a beautiful man.
You can tell he’s genuinely devoted to his character and the story.
I like to imagine that unlike most rich actors he's like "sweet, paycheck. That'll go to some armor in World of Warcraft we going raiding lads!" An awesome nerdy bloke and fantastic actor.
i think he partake on some Charity run days ago. i think it was Durrell fun run or someshit like that
He also lives in a small house

@@skilarbabcock smart man. Don't blow your money on giant shit. Then you gotta get a cleaner or clean it all yourself. Small is smart.
@@roadhouse6999 he does, but he absolutely loves WoW.
When Geralt talks to Iola in The Last Wish, he tells her that "as there are monsters which can be struck down only with a silver blade, so there are those for whom iron is lethal." A lot of people read this as "oh, so there are actual monsters who can/should be killed with iron swords!" I think that's an incorrect reading; what Geralt's implying is that there are humans who are no less monstrous than those with fangs, claws, and horrific forms. All his swords are for monsters, and considering how intensely Geralt is shown to feel remorse and regret, I think that's a justification he needs to constantly make in order to live with himself.
Yeah that was pretty obvious but... Fuuuck! The way you put it was beautiful!
That was almost an easter egg for the Witcher 3 game trailer.
Damn Henry Cavil. I could listen or watch him speaking about Witcher for hours. The man clearly "lives" the role . The choice of him playing the Witcher was inspired to say the least.
I've often wondered if Viggo Mortenson's complete investment in the character of Aragorn and the difference it made for everyone when you watch the LOTR making of videos helped Henry Cavill to understand where the bar is to really bring out the best in himself and everyone else. I would like to think that it did.
I hope Henry sees all the love coming towards him online. But being a nerd I am sure he does.
He's a fan of the games, he knows the character he plays. So refreshing, and rare these days when it comes to actors actually knowing the lore they are getting into.
Last time an actor knew this much lore for a part was Patrick Stuart in Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion lol
@@elise205 Christopher Lee who plays Saruman in LOTR knows a lot about the middle earth. He read the book(s) in the 50s, wanted to play and is a fan of Gandalf. Unfortunately he was already too old for Gandalf's action-packed role.
@@hellacezkie That's awesome! Not that last bit, that's kinda depressing, but hey, he still got to be Saruman, so that's still great!
@@elise205 It was funny as shit seeing bts and outtakes of Sir Lee destroying peter xD
He is more a fan of the books and played the games because of the books. Unlike most gamers that never heard of the books before playing the game
Can we have Henry Cavill explain different aspects of the show?
Or aspects of Warhammer?
Or anything of anything he wants?
The man is just so damn personable!
