  • Cactus is a Latin word that means a spiny plant. It is called #nagfani in Hindi, #Nagfana in Bengali & Marathi, #Nagamalli in Telugu, and #Chaptukalli in Tamil. Though eating cactus is very popular in #Mexico but in India, we have been using the cactus plant & fruit for various treatments. Also, many farmers in India grow them around their fields to naturally protect the crops.
Cooking cactus is like cooking Bhindi, quite easy & surprisingly very tasty. All you need to know is how to cut a cactus.
A lot of varieties of cactus that grow are quite beneficial for us in many ways. I am cooking a variety of #Cactus called #Nopal or #Nopales which has a pad-like shape. The same variety also bears a fruit called #PricklyPear which comes with a lot of health benefits.
Both the Nopal Cactus & its fruit (prickly pear) are riddled with lots of thorns but carefully removing them gives us a cactus we can eat.
Cactus is long known for its many health benefits like high on antioxidants, regulates blood sugar, reduces cholesterol, eliminates hangovers & high on vitamins, minerals & fibre. Eating cactus fruit - Prickly Pear prevents peelia i.e. jaundice. It is specifically high in calcium, potassium, vitamin A, C & B, Iron & Magnesium.
Currently, there are no know cactus species that are poisonous but getting stung by a cactus thorn/spike causes irritation, pain and ay lead to bacterial infections.

I'm American but my family is from Mexico. As a child I didn't like the taste. I started to eat Prickly pear (cactus) about 2 yrs ago in my adult yrs and I REALLY love them now. I am very pleased to see how other cultures prepare and eat them and I look forward to following your recipe!

First time I am seeing someone from India cookining cactus pads. This is a commons native south american food but it also grows in other deserts as in Taif, Saudi Arabia etc. I always thought it had a strange taste but I would sure like to try this some day. I was curious about how people in the east (e.g India) would prepare this if any. It seems like you had to make sure the liquids were cooked out of it. Looks delicious. Also, why does everyone think it's poison when the prickly pears actually grow right out of the pads? Thanks for sharing.

This vegetable has been eaten for thousands of years in Mexico. Nopal is grown in eighteen of the Mexican states with 74% in the Distrito Federal, with an annual yield of 58,000 tons[which?] of both the tuna and the pads.[7] The farming of nopal provides many subsistence communities with employment, food, income, and allows them to remain on their land.

The smoke was bothering your eyes so the wood fire did not work well for this vlog. Do you have to put amchur powder in everything? You would not use it for Bhindi so why for cactus. Or is it a Punjabi thing? I did not like that idea at all. Not sure about this recipe actually.

Alovera's sabji is very tasty. But you need to find sweet aloevera for it not the bitter one. The sweet variety is usually found in Rajasthan.

I tried it today. Oh man; it's not my kind of food. It's slimy (like Bhendi - but that's still ok) and it's sour (?). Who likes sourly taste in a curry or a sabji? Not me - for sure.
