    At the minute 5:00, it's not a fungus but an insect (Dactylopious Coccus) named cochinilla (cochineal in English). It looks like a fungus because it covers itself with a spongy protective material. The Spanish crown made strong efforts to keep a monopoly over the production for centuries. The pigment was so appreciated around the world that even the English army used it to color the soldiers' uniforms. Today, the production is very limited but still present in many applications beside textiles, uses a food and cosmetic colorings.

    Might I comment. I've eaten nopal for many decades. These are of the class " Opuntia" of which not all are spiny.
    The spines, of cellulose, are rendered inoffensive in most preparation. I chose to consume young pads whose spines at that stage were rubbery nubbins. It's just another vegetable.

      The traditional way is to hold them over a flame. A burner on a gas stove works great......just enough to burn off the thorns. Then just scrape the burned thorns off. Slice the "paddles" into strips and use as desired.

      Not all nopales are the same - Some are thorny than others. I've had the thornless one and the flavor on the nopal is not the greatest, while the Thorny one(Not excessivly thorny) has a decent flavor. As for the livestock - They burn off the thorns if they have them, the older plants or leaves/Stems usually lose most of their thorns by then. Not all nopales are the same. I enjoy them grilled

      The point is the whole plant has a use. The pads are edible to humans. If you do not like to eat them, you can make vodka from them.

      Think of all the trees that were burnt in the recent wildfire in Turkey. That area can be replanted with nopal which is both fire resistant and prevents erosion.

    Amazing!!! In India few areas are there, where it's fruit is consumed. First time I saw this much uses of this. Want to introduce in Uttarakhand as main crop because other crops have failed due to wild animals (monkeys, pigs). Please suggest technical support and marketing

    • @estebancorral5151
      @estebancorral5151 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, the failure is due to the Indians’ ignorance and mismanagement not to wild animals. You can dig trenches to trap capture pigs. Then sell the pigs. Money is to be made. Feed your animals with cacti. Get milk to make paneer and yoghurt. Don’t sell the milk just the paneer and yoghurt. You will make more money.
