So interesting! I love tunas ( what they are called in Mexico). All of them-green, red, yellow- have a slightly different taste. My grandma used to make a candy called queso de tuna ( the flesh boiled down). It was wonderful! Thank you!

Prickly pears grow wild in a beach access area where I live in Melbourne Beach, FL. I have harvested some. The fruit and the juice are excellent. I now have in pots 21 seedlings that I have been growing (from the seeds of one fruit) the past few months. I have also pruned some of the wild bushes, of which my son has planted some clippings in pots in his back yard in Orlando. They are showing signs of growth, showing me that they are very easy to grow. I have enjoyed the prickly pear leaves prepared by chefs at resorts in MX. Everyone should be growing fruits and vegetables of all sorts!

From southern Canada down to southern South America and the Caribbean, every place has a native variety.
We have 3 varieties of nopal/prickly pear in the yard. One, Santa Rita, planted before we moved here. It was developed for livestock feed but people like the flowers. 2) wild nopal from the brush out back. Ranchers like it because cattle like it, thorns and all. And, 3rd, a domesticated thornless (but still has nasty pickers) variety from Mexico. Pads get a foot across and 18 inches long, and an inch thick. To have nopalitos, the vegetable, they have to be picked when half that size. Be warned, hogs love fruit and pads, and javelina pigs will wreck a patch.
Winter rains are vital for good bloom and pads. In this area of Arizona, we got a lot of winter rain, some cases over a quarter inch in one storm. And each time God spanked California with feet of snow and flooding, we got more. A lot more. From January through April, over 5 inches. Too much rain can mean root rot.
The fewer young pads taken, the more blooms next year. They only bloom on one-year-old pads. For nopalitos, people take from the wild. Domesticate nopal are bred for good fruit/pads production, and sweetness. Nopal pads should be cooked because the sap will give you what manos in Mexico call watery bowels, the trots. Pads are best fried with beef and onions for a side dish. Fruit is best, to me, raw.
To remove glochids (pickers) put some fruit in a colander and move shake the colander under running water. This knocks off thorns and pickers. Pads, put in a pot of water, bring to a boil, then cool and scrape clean. Trim away the outside and any thorns found. Old school preservation of pads was layer in salt. If they ferment, fantastic. If they only dry out, soak in cool water for a few hours before preparing.

You do not eat the seeds. Dry them for a bird feeder or grind to mix with flour.

Those grow in Tunisia like crazy. They're almost EVERYWHERE and they're as common as grass or wild berries in middle and northern Europe. They're my nightmare fruits. Peeling them by hand is hard, even if you burn or rubb off the thorns (with sand). Some tiny ones are often left and will be a pain to remove them (you need a magnifying glass LOL).
Fun fact: Camels eat them with their thorny leafs just like that.

Yes but the people don’t eat the leaves yet they claim the lack food. Their ignorance keeps them poor and famished.

@@estebancorral5151 different culture, different customs. Maybe most people have never heard, let alone tried to eat the leafs. It's kinda disrespectful, but i see where you're coming from. It's the same in many places: elder gens have experienced war or poverty or just simpler lives and ate all sorts of things and weren't very wasteful, while their children and grand children feared to starve during Covid 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

@@k.r.99 Helping people from ignorance is not disrespectful. It is like putting down flares on the road to warn of a collapsed bridge. Over 1600 years ago, there were two men from Tunisia who battled ignorance and their names have come down to us as Cyprian of Carthage and Augustine of Hippo. Of the latter, there is no occidental University the not teach the thoughts of Augustine.

It loves the sun and dies in the bitter cold. However, with careful arrangement it can be successfully cultivated in your country. Leon Trotsky, studied it in the garden of his borrowed home in Mexico City. No doubt he immediately recognized its potential for central Asian republics of the USSR. Unfortunately, he was assassinated with an axe .
