    Another D.I.Y tip when drilling holes in walls is to stick an old envelope directly underneath where you are drilling and all the debris falls into the envelope instead of all over the place. Makes life so much easier.

    • @JulieGraham-u7b
      @JulieGraham-u7b ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Or put the dustpan against the wall to catch the debris.

    • @jmk1962
      @jmk1962 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@JulieGraham-u7b - Yes but then you are drilling with just one hand while the other holds the dust pan. If you stick the envelope to the wall it frees up both hands to do the drilling which is far safer.

    Both of you should be proud, and not just for upping your DIY skills but also because you’re working on the home you OWN! Imagine learning things without YT to watch, lol! A tip from a slightly (ahem) older homeowner, look for in charity shops for 'how to' books for home projects. They usually cover issues that never change so they remain valid & are illustrated with step by step instructions which we have found very useful vs. a video where steps are left out. Hope your recovery was quick & you are back to normal already! Sending all 3 of you hugs, love & prayers for healthy, safe & blessed Christmas visits with your loved ones 🤗💜🙏🏻🎄!

    When you buy your first property you encounter lots of jobs that need tackling. Our DIY skills only came about because we couldn’t afford to pay people to do jobs and had to have a go! It’s a learning curve Luke and we did it back in the day before TH-cam was launched! I’m sure as your confidence grows so will your DIY skills🔧🔨🪚

    I live on my own and never had to do diy before but I watched TH-cam vids or just asked someone even in a diy store I would ask how to do something. Now I’m not bad at it and do it all myself unless it’s something heavy or needs a professional. TH-cam was my saviour you can really pick up a lot of help tips and tricks.

    I can’t recommend the Blinds2go easy fit range enough - no drilling and super easy to fit. Def worth the extra money, we aren’t great at DIY and managed to fit them really easily. Worth remembering for your future blinds. I love the ones you’ve picked - really lovely neutral colour. The light fitting in your office is gorgeous too, wish I had the ceiling height you’ve got. House is looking amazing already.

    Be proud of your efforts and show them off next time your Mam and Step Dad visit. No one is an instant expert and I'm sure the 3rd Blind was easier to hang than the first! Love the blinds you chose too. I bet the first meal you ever cooked would not compare favorably with how and what you cook now. It will be the same when you start the garden. You will have failures and successes. Each success makes you more confident.

    Mrs Dan Dare here to suggest that if you are dissatisfied with a plain lamp shade you could add a velvet ribbon to it to elevate the look or add colour. I recently added a 10 mm strip of velvet ribbon to the top & bottom a plain lampshade - specifically just above & below the rim on the fabric side. By adding the ribbon I was able to bring in the accent colour of the room. I initially used double sided tape as a temporary fix to see if I liked it before permanently afixing the ribbon with fabric glue. It might be worth a thought, Luke & Zara (or anyone else).

    Well done 👏👏, but I will say my blinds always hang outside the window recess.. why? Cos guaranteed that sun will find that tiny little sliver where the blind doesn't meet the inside of the window recess .. and ..POW.. straight in your eyeballs when you trying to have a lie in especially on a summer morning! 😁

    A DIY tip I learned from my husband is whenever you are installing something such as a drapery rod or blind or any type of hanging system, take one of the screws with you to the hardware store (not big box) and buy quality screws and throw the cheap ones away! Your project will go much smoother!

    Hi Luke, You did a great job on putting up the roman blinds, don't be so hard on yourself. It is with trial and error we learn along the way. I was given this piece of advice a long time ago. A mistake is not a mistake, but a learning experience along the pathway of life. It is so lovely to see how lovely the home is coming along. Please take care of yourself, you sound like you are coming down with a cold. Take some time to take care of yourself, we will still be here. Your health is more important. Hope you have a restful week. Grace❤❤

    Hi Luke and Zara
    Sorry about your shed roof. They are a job to keep up with even when new. And this consistent rain is wearing out everything. Your blinds look gorgeous. As I speak from experience that side gap on your pillow side will wake you up with the harshest sun. I have not discovered a way to make blinds completely sun proof either. Hi Luke! I can understand your issue with the blinds. We have blinds on all our windows when we first moved into our home and even though we didn't install them I just really hate them. They're so heavy to lift up whenever we need to open our windows and likewise difficult to put down. I'm not a fan of blinds in general. Oh dear....by the end of the vlog your throat sounded like it was getting worse. I hope you feel better soon and have a lovely Christmas. Lots of fluids, hot soups, and tea as well as zinc and vitamin C. Take good care. Much love from Fort Worth, Texas! 🤠🎄❄

    Well done, Luke! My dad was kind enough to buy me my own set of tools when I was younger and gave me the confidence to try things at least once whether in the home or working on a car ;)
    (I changed the s-belt in a Subaru years ago, which isn’t the easiest thing to do… and something I’ll never try again!)
    One thing I will say is that every home comes with its own quirks and the walls are no different. If something I’ve done e before at another place doesn’t work in a new place, I’ll either Goggle it or actually brainstorm ideas with the friendly people at the hardware store.

    Like so many things DIY takes a lot of time, trial and error to master. Believe it or not, some folks approach cooking and baking with the same trepidation as you approach DIY projects. You are doing fine. Food for thought: Now is a good time to create a house journal where you keep track of colors, brands, etc used in your home. When you head off to shop for the house you have color swatches at hand, know what you have used if you need replacement parts, etc.

    Well done Luke DIY is difficult even for seasoned persons like ourselves we have gutted 4 houses through our married life this fifth a bungalow has been done by tradesmen but we have done quite simple tasks that now were in our seventies proved to by tedious and time consuming putting a oak mantle on the wall 4 days drilling holes in back of cupboards all morning two pictures 😢 ect ect Your home is looking lovely it takes time to evolve you will change your mind so many times so my advice is just enjoy x

      You sound like you are doing amazing though Pauline, I think we are often very hard on ourselves and see perfection online which can often put us down. Big love!

    Well done on the DIY front I've been in my place years and haven't tackled replacing my blinds. Very brave, you have inspired me. Now take some time to recoup before whizzing home for the holidays. Body's repair while you are sleeping. Xx

    Hope youre feeling better soon Luke. Zara made me howl when you said your weren't well and she said "I don't care"...more not what she said but how she said it. Catherine, Dainty Diaries, coukd give you a lesson or two on DIY, she's a wizz with a drill. I have power tool envy for her "Riobi" collection. I bought blinds that you stick on instead of drill in...yeah, they're still in the packaging 18 months later...😂😂😂

    If you have plaster walls, old walls, or brick, grab a concrete drill bit. The screws should go in easier. You may need a few sizes, but they really help! My home is over 100yo, so they are a lifesaver on the concrete like walks and petrified wood!
