Scarface was legit certified 51/50 as a teenager. Tried to kill himself because he didn't like how he looked and was thrown in an insane asylum. His first album solo album "Mr Scarface is Back" is a masterpiece where he basically focuses all that manic depression into gangster stories. Mike Dean started out as a session musician for Rap A Lot records as well as an engineer/mixer. 94 is when he started to fully establish himself as a producer most notably on Scarface's The Diary.

Mike Dean started his career working with Scarface, doing co production and keys. Their music relationship goes back to 93 I believe. Scarface is also a producer as well, that's why they have such good chemistry. Side note: Scarface was 2Pac's favorite rapper, and his cadence was heavily influenced by Scarface, that's where the similarities come from.

I loved that he used the Backyard Band (BYB) for this. It's almost like a sign of respect since the Tiny Desk is in DC. BYB is a famous Go-Go cover band in DC. People pay to see them perform and have for decades. One of their popular covers is Hello by Adele and it's AMAZING. MC Eiht as in the number 8. Facemob is just another nickname. This performance was so good! In his book, Scarface talks about how involved he was in his own production style & choices. He said that when they grew up they listened to all kinds of music including rock because hip hop wasn't necessarily around yet. So his influences are pretty organic. He's definitely a top 5 hip hop artist for me. In no particular order Pac, Big, Nas, Face & Cube. He has tons of great stories in his music. You can listen to any of his albums and tell he cares about the body of work as a whole not just the singles and cash grab anthems. He's deep!

BTW...Mike Dean has been around forever (he got into Hip Hop in the early 90s via Scarface and J Prince's label, Rap-A-Lot)... Mike was reintroduced to Gen Z via Kanye and Travis Scott. Face definetley was an influence on Pac. It’s evident in his cadence. Listen to him then listen to Pac and you can hear how Pac modeled his flow. That’s why it was only natural for Pac to make a song with Scarface. On Smile they rhyme with the same pattern as if Pac is showing homage to him.

When I have kids, I hope I can be as half as welcoming and open to my kid’s interests as this man has been to his son’s.
And I also hope that my kids can also be vulnerable and inviting with their passions as the son has been with his father.

To rap about mental health and open up about the things that Scarface did, like contemplaying suicide, was extremely rare in that era of hiphop. And I think the courage to stand out and open up when you are not from the ”cool places” like new york at the time, is not matched until 2pac came along. I think that was what pac liked with scarface.

The Diary is definitely a classic. His best album in my opinion is “The Untouchable” which came out 3 years later. But my favorite song of his is called “Now I Feel Ya” which is on his second album “The World is Yours”. He has very deep and dark lyrics that shed light on many of the intrusive thoughts that many of us have. H-Towns finest.

Btw the song after "seen a man die" was called "Fuxk Faces" and was also feat. Devin the Dude , Tela & Too $hort. Thats why he only had 1 verse. Came out on his double disc album called (My Homies) cameout in 1998. Thats why he said "that didnt age well" for context.

Scarface is a great prducer also, plays tons of instruments.
Mike Dean is and has been his personal co-producer for about 30 years. Face Mob is both a group he formed and his other alias. MC Eiht(8). Your pops hides nothing, very transparent. You both are good because you are honest
    Keep it up

Great reaction! Definitely one of the GOATs, one of the greatest storytellers and your rappers favorite rapper for sure. His feature list is legendary. Jay Z., Nas, Beanie Sigel, Ice Cube and many more. Mike Dean has been around since the 80s and actually got his big break producing for the Geto Boys and produced on their solo projects. He also worked with UGK early on.

If your reaction wasn't already awesome enough, to a wondeful Scarface performance; when your dad mentioned Pac at the end after talking about hitting you on an emotional level, that was the cherry on top. 😊 Pac and Scar were so close and if I'm not mistaken, Scarface was also one of Pacs biggest influences. You can hear some style of him in the way Pac raps. Both are so humane, raw, pure, real lyricists talking their emotions and feelings into poetry.

MC Eiht (8) was a part of the group Compton's Most Wanted before he went solo. He had a significant role (A-Wax) in the movie Menace II Society as well as Straight Up Menace from the sndtrk. No matter which way you go it's banger after banger. But the album Music To Driveby is the pinnacle. His solo album We Come Strapped is a classic. Eiht was also one of the west coast artists to maintain east coast love and respect through the issues in the 90s. There's a DJ Premier remix of the song Def Wish II. Preem actually executive produced his 2017 album Which Way Iz West, even lending some work on 4 tracks.
