    Hey ive found if you add frozen blood worm to the mix and re freeze it, that works and that gets the puffers attention 👍🏻plus you can get calcium blocks for your snails, i live in a hard water area but still some snails have calcium deficiency, i also put egg shell in my snail tank and thats supposed to help too 👍🏻🦇

      The cuttle bones sold for birds are excellent to add to snail tanks. Put it in the filter or just toss it in the tank. It will sink faster if you boil it about 10 minutes.

    Here in the EU it's become impossible to get your hands on Repashy and I can tip people here in Europe, scratching their heads, to buy Agar Agar, it's an algae based sort of gelatin. It keeps together better than normal gelatin and it's not made from mammal bones. It doesn't melt in the water either.

  • @EliteTreats

    There was a new study and the best food to feed is live insects such as mealworms and crickets. This is their diet in the wild. And use sand substrate because when they sift through the sand, that will grind their teeth. Less than 5% of their diet is snails and things like that.

  • @CrazyAquariumGuy

    I guess that's the nice thing about my super hard, alkaline water: my snails do great. I don't need supplements or anything for their shells, nor do I need to feed them much because they have so much biofilm available.

    • @DansFish
      @DansFish  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep...there are pros and cons to each water type. That's your pro. Con: bathtube rings :)

  • @madfishdiva
    @madfishdiva 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is a great idea. I especially like the nutritional vale. I often wonder if my puffers have a sufficient diet which is mostly protein.

    • @DansFish
      @DansFish  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I worry about that too. In the wild, they get a lot of the nutrition they need from the gut of their prey. In the aquarium we tend to feed cleaned and frozen prey items, so the nutrition in the gut is altered or missing altogether. I feel better when I can get some food into them which is packed with vitamins and minerals.

    I have 3 little SA puffers that will NOT eat anything other then frozen blood worms.. I've tried mysis, brine, raw shrimp tail chunks even beef heart .. and they will not eat baby ramshorn or MTS snails, literally have snails reproducing in there with them! .. read they prefer pond snails or pest snails but i have not had any to try yet .. i will give this a shot see if it may work! thanks!

    • @DansFish
      @DansFish  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hope it works. If those puffers have other food items available and just won't switch form bloodworms, it might be time to hold back the bloodworms for a week or so if the puffers have good body weight and are healthy. Usually, I don't find holding food back like that necessary, but it might be needed in this case or their teeth could overgrow.

    Hi Dan! How do you encourage Amazon puffers to not surf the glass as much. Ive had 2 Amazon for a few months who have been surfing the glass quiet a bit. Maybe a quarter of the time. I got 3 more from my LFS to help but they all seem to surf more now.
    They are in a 40 breeder with a nice jungle of Val, Java fern, crypts, Ludwigia, floating penny wort with long roots, hygro plants.
    It is near a window but the back is blacked out. I've got a small powerhead aimed at the front of the glass to give them some current to swim in but they prefer the sides to surf on.

    • @DansFish
      @DansFish  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Henry,
      I wish I could help, but I honestly have no idea as it is not a problem I have run into. IF ANYONE READS THIS AND KNOWS HOW TO HELP, PLEASE COMMENT BELOW!
      I'm lucky...my little group will occasionally surf the glass ( a couple of them are doing it in the vid) but the don't do it very often and never for a long period of time. I have 2 off-the-cuff ideas: 1. Unplug the power head and see if that changes anything...perhaps the current is actually driving them to the glass? I don't know, but it it worth a try unless they were surfing before the power head was placed it the tank. 2. Perhaps some live food to play with? A mess of ghost shrimp or cherry shrimp or scuds to hunt?
      These are just guesses. I wish I could help more.
