- This is the first of a series of fly tying tutorials I will be posting. This streamer is deadly for smallmouth bass in moving water. If you try out this fly for yourself, please let me know in the comments how it worked for you. As always, any comments with tips and/or recommendations are much appreciated. Recipe:
Hook: 3XL Streamer hook, size 6
Eyes: Chartreuse lead dumbbell eyes
Thread: 280 d Chartreuse
Wire: Dark green Ultra Wire
Tail: Two marabou feathers (olive and grizzly used in video)
Flash: Crystal Flash
Hackle: Grizzly streamer neck hackle (Schlappen works too)
Back: Olive rabbit strip
Body: Olive ice chenille
Head: 2 colors of Senyo's Laser Dub (olive and white used here)

awesome thanks I've been flyfishing for a while but just now getting into fishing for bass. Do you think this pattern will work well In big rivers like the Columbia River in Washington state?

+Luther Ardinger Ask away man! I like to swinging it through current with some short hops, or stripping it through slower water. As long as it's near the bottom

i am a smallmouth angler and i am learning to tie flies but im wondering what line weight you use for smallmouth
+kenny bouvier I use a 6wt rod for 99% of my Smallmouth fishing. That being said, I've lost some smallies that made me wish I was using a 7 or 8wt. Thanks for watching!

+Jonathan Barrow sorry for the late reply but I use orange barred rabbit strip, brown hackle, orange chenille , brown marabou, and rust colored dubbing. Hope this helps

Not too difficult. I wonder, when that rabbit fur gets wet is it much more difficult to cast? I only have a 5wt. rod. I had better get a larger one before going for smallmouth on the fly. I have spinner rods that I use for bass, I guess those eyes are sufficient weight to cast with a spinner. All the best and thanks for sharing. Sean
+Sean Mooney I have no problem casting this fly with my 6 wt, moderate action rod. In smaller sizes, it's definitely castable with a 5wt, especially in the smaller rivers/creeks that smallmouth love. Good luck with those smallies!
I have all kinds of trouble getting them to bite, I was out yesterday, throw swimming jimmy, closer, Etc. They just watched it...no strikes. Grabbed my spinnng rod with a Pac-Man color Whopper Plopper...they destroyed it...25 fish! Talk about frustrating! Even the old faithful black Wolly Bugger didn't work....I tried everything and different retrieves. I keep trying.
I think Bob Clouser would have something to say about this title..
If you can tie a fly that can compete with the Niko hellgrammite, you will have the best small mouth fly.
