    Nice to see someone sensible keeping their butti solo, if your fish mix well that's great , my male labiatas won't play nicely even with a female!

    I've had one since it was small, it lived with multiple african cichlids and four blood parrots. Somehow, due to some random miracle, it has yet to become hyper-aggressive. I assume it's because I kept it with aggressive mbuna and four large blood parrots from its early days, with it knowing that the parrots and melanochromis are the top dogs, despite the butti now being much, much larger.

    I have a pair of this fish, most probably a male and a female with lots of other fishes like banana cichilid, texus cichilid, jewel cichilid, silver dollars, mono angels, rainbow shark, ret tail shark, couple of parrot fishes, couple of feather fishes and knife fishes and convict chchilids as well. These telapias were introduced when they were just about a inch in size and since then they are well accustomed with other tank mates and now they are 10+ inch in size. I have not seen them chasing other smaller fishes, they do not chase any other variety of fishes of the tank. Sometime, they chase one another but that may be for fun and not due to their aggressive behavior. They change color as you indicated based on light condition of the room and the tank. It is fun to see them with other fishes.

    Omg Darius. I just got to see this video. She reminds me of my T-bar sajica cichlid. He's not as large a fish but has a lot of personality and can have a temper especially when he's hungry. I was laughing out loud when you were trying to pet her and then trying to clean her tank and scolding her because she tried to bite you. Hilarious. How in the world do you transfer her to another tank? Is there a net that large or does she let you pick her up?

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      She'd never let me pick her up! I have a fishing net about 1ft 6in in diameter that makes the chase quick! I just moved her to my 125g...after the move she had a tantrum and ended up with a hole in her head from ramming into something! She has a cool personality...but honestly it annoys me at times when she shows her attitude towards her tank mates

  • @Hallands.
    @Hallands. 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I've seen this strange spiking of aggression, too - with both male and female big gourami and angelfish.
    So I was looking for patterns and solutions and here's a possible explanation and solution:
    When healthy, territorial fish go with many different fish, equally big, their sexuality is suppressed. In community tank only one or two dominant pairs may breed - if they're territorial, that is - if not, no problem. They throw their eggs or fry wherever and a few may survive to adulthood.
    But when a suppressed, healthy adult territorial fish suddenly finds itself alone (= on top) the hormones peak and this wonderful new territory *simply must not be lost* - not for anything!
    This brought me to the conclusion that perhaps there really was only one cure: They must breed! I've done this three times with extremely aggressive gourami of both sexes. Two were absolute successes, one near a fatality, then a success: One big tiger gourami female wouldn't accept the males I offered and nearly killed one before I caught him up. Only when I moved Mr. Earl, the dominant two spot blue male from the community tank over into her tank, did she breed.
    But the *main point* is that when they begin to calm down as the offspring grows up, they can *always* be reintroduced to the community tank. The hormones are back to normal, I guess.
    Ps.: Don't tell anyone, I said this, but parenthood mellows even fish...

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That makes a lot of since! That aggressive behavior is undeniable defending a territory and the main reason fish want a secure territory is to raise up their next generation! Also looking back before she went in this tank alone, I kept her in my 210g with my male Midas and a few dither fish...and she definitely looked like she wanted to spawn with the midas...just the midas didn't share similar feelings! I would love to breed this fish, but I'll need at least a empty 125g...and a male; I guess my easiest solution until I can obtain that is to try to get her back in a community, and then maybe her urge will decrease!

      Sorry to hear...its just a matter of learning their ways, my first experience was similar. Cichlids will always build hierarchy's in their communities so its a matter of learning who can live in the community and the total number of residents...you can read about how to do it, but you won't really get the hang of it until you try it again! Cichlids are like sour patches...they can be sweet and sour!

    Old video,but why the hell are non-oreochromis cichlids still called tilapias? Like, hornet cichlids are their own family and have nothing to do with the ones we eat, they were removed from tilapinii a long time ago for a reason. The true "tilapia" cichlids are just 3 localized species in South and Central Africa.Not even Nile Tilapias are tilapias if i get into modern naming ,after all.
    That fish still looks like a saint compared to my male jewel cichlid that i have.Maybe a Dovii could destroy it,but even then he will leave him with a purple sore or something like that,bruh.

    DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS In my experience that won't work too well. She has by now matured and won't be cowed - not even by you, as you told us. Please get her some males. There must be other hobbyists who can help in your vicinity.
    Also did you notice how cheap electronic on/off timers have become? Often they're at less than 10 $! I use them for all my tanks, at first because I was going away on vacation, but I discovered that they're easily used to get the amount of light exactly right for the tank type and to simulate changes in seasons if you want to breed fish which react to those.
    With her, maybe don't have lights on when it's dark outside the tank, so she wont fight her reflection?
    But please give her the choice of a few good males after you establish some hideouts in the tank. And why no plants? Is she hard on them? Try the cheap and fast growing ones with long, grass like blades. They aren't pretty but provide good shelter and security.
    And I think you can breed her right where she is. It's not the tank size so much as the filtration nowadays. My big cichlids grow to max size and breed willingly in a 115 gallon tank like it was a 400 just because the filtration is extremely effective - one sponge filter turning over 1200 l/h, one brook filter running 2500 l/h over a ledge with small stones, one root filter taking 300 l/h through a dense root net in a high glass vase beside the tank and then through the main trickle filter, which is a 10 liter bucket with five layers of simple aluminium trays with porous stones perforated in the bottom - my most effective and easiest to make trickle filter to date. The bucket has an outlet hose and an extra hole to prevent overflowing and the trays are just stacked on top of each other on two small bamboo sticks placed across each.

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I figured that her attitude is the new her! I tried adding all types of plants, the last one I tried was floating water wisteria which she destroyed. I think this fish is abnormally destructive, if you look to the right of the tank I had to pile rocks over the filter because if not she would destroy it! Sometimes I can hear a tapping noise from upstairs, when I come down that's her using the heater as a punching bag!
      The most convenient way to add males for me is to buy a group of juvies, the good thing is that she may not feel as threatened by youngsters as she would feel if I added adults, the only thing is that if she pairs with one of them that's less dominate than her that can cause a problem in their relationship as males typically don't settle easily being sub dominate to females (that the case with my green terrors), and that result in countless fights and failed spawns.
      At the moment I only have 1 timer and that's on my co2 system and lights on my planted tank, the ones your talking about are aquarium purposed timers?

    • @Hallands.
      @Hallands. 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS Wow, she's really something - although two of my most dominant female gourami used to wake me up by punching the thermometer... And your right, you'll be very lucky if she accepts a youngster less dominant than herself. That's why I thought it would be good if you could borrow a mature, highly dominant male just for the breeding.
      No, the timers I use are all purpose bought at a builders market. I buy everything for my aquarium there, hoses, tubes, valves, pumps, heaters, acrylic plates aso - usually three to five times more value at price.
