    I've seen amazing footage of these cichlids protecting sand nests and carrying off large turtles in their mouths. Both parents stay with the Frye and they are vicious. It's on a documentary on the rift lakes. Cradle of life I think its called. In the film you see a couple adults attacking everything in sight including turtles

    I think both parents waste away, not just the female. Discussion popped up about this over Pam’s video, and it may be possible to steal all the fry from parents and possibly they would not waste due to fry guarding. National Geographic - Jewell of the Rift Lake Tanganyika is a great video of them as referenced in another comment.
    I think the book you referred to is a private print with only a few copies out there, not in print. Would be in Europe who has dove and taken tons of photos in Tanganyika.
    Also, I think a 240 is about 760 gallons shy of a small enclosure for Boulengerochromis, just my opinion for those that might be interested in keeping them.

    The world longest and heaviest cichlid belongs to the Temensis Peacock Bass. The current world record length recorded by the IGFA is 37.01" inches at a weight of 29lb 1oz. There are many numerous reports of Temensis caught that were bigger. The current world record for the emperor cichlid is 6lbs 7oz. at 20.87 inches, as with the temensis there have also been emperors caught that are bigger than what is recorded at the IGFA. One world record site shows a questionable report of 22lbs for the emperor cichlid.

      I had a group of 5 about 10 years ago, after I seen the one somethingfishy had in person when he kept it upstairs, I came across this group. I got bored of them because of their coloration at 12" or so, then sold them off.

      That's what I thought, read it a few diff places but if you google it now it does say Emperor Cichlids, now Idk if they are talking about length or weight etc...but when I googled it like a yr ago I got the same answer you just gave & now it says Emperor

    • @JasonsPlecosCichlids
      @JasonsPlecosCichlids 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BigDsmoke Yes I seen that as well, my statement was for both length and weight. The Emperor is big but its not "biggest" out there. I have yet to see a 30lb + Emperor Cichlid.

    • @Jaywil07
      @Jaywil07  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Where are you getting the records lol 😂 also if you measure the way these dude measure the Giant is easily over 3 feet ..... all of the data shows that the Emperor from Lake Tanganyika is the largest Cichlid.

    • @JasonsPlecosCichlids
      @JasonsPlecosCichlids 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Jaywil07 IGFA, International Game Fish Association, these are 100% verified numbers, photos and weight. How are they measuring? There is only one way to measure a fish. What data are you seeing? Is it verified data? Is it guessing data? Is it repeated data that everyone keeps repeating because they heard it on the net? I have yet to see an Emperor over 30lbs or at the 36" mark. I have seen what looks to be that big but it's far from verified.

    Sadly a fish store here in St. Louis has one. They tried to sell it for years and finally ended up putting it in a 55 gallon by itself it was so sad. It couldn’t even turn around. I watched them feed him and water was splashing everywhere.

    Howdy fellow fish geeks.
    Fyi .. the Boulengerchromis microlepsis the emperor cichlid is not a mouth brooder but the parents will move the fry with their mouths to safer area away from a vast ray of predators etc. They lay 10-20,000 eggs. Both male and female protect and raise the young.
    I've been keeping emperors for around 20 years. I did have a pair bond and tubes dropped twice but never had a spawn. They are very high in domestic violence. They do not play well with others. Some large synos cats can do well as long they have a hiding spot.
    My old Bertha lived to about 13 yrs old and was 28". Current one is about 24 and i have another at my other building at 10"?
    Bertha killed a 3ft catfish. Ate large frontosa, destroyed red devils and more. Awesome pet fish but obviously need a 300 gal wide foot print tank for long term housing.
    Diet is pellets, nightcrawlers and occasional a fish.
    Me Dave
