- Heterotilapia buttikoferi, also known as the zebra tilapia, is a West African species of Cichlid. Buttikoferi is a large cichlid, capable of growing up to 30.8 cm (12.1 in) in standard length. Body is typically yellow or white with black stripes which can vary from very light to near black depending on the mood of the fish. The vertical black bars are broader than the lighter interspaces. Their stripes tend to fade as they age.
This freshwater fish is native to large rivers in tropical West Africa from Guinea-Bissau to Liberia. People have imported and bred them in several other parts the world for aquarium food purposes.
H. buttikoferi is an alien species in Thailand where it has been introduced for use as an aquarium fish.
The zebra tilapia is known for its aggressive behavior and so it is best housed singly or as a male-female pair. As juveniles they aren't as aggressive, but as they mature their aggressive behavior increases. ... Zebra tilapias are substrate spawners. A slight increase in water temperature sometimes induces spawning.
These cichlids get large and have a predatory streak, meaning they will readily make a snack of smaller fish. On top of this, they have a territorial demeanor, not unusual for large cichlids but several males can share a tank if you give them enough room. The stripes on zebra tilapias are more defined when they are young and tend to fade somewhat as the fish matures. This cichlid grows rather large - up to 10-16 inches (25-40 cm) in length - so you need to house it in a spacious aquarium with lots of swimming room.
Tilapia buttikoferi need to be kept in an aquarium of at least 90 gallons. They are fairly easy to keep but do require large, regular water changes as they are high waste producers. The Zebra Cichlid may be aggressive to smaller tank mates, always keep this fish with similar sized ones. Species only tank or keep with similar sized tank mates (preferably other cichids which can stick up for themselves). Smaller tank mates would certainly get bullied so this is best avoided.
Feeding: Feed the Buttikoferi Cichlid a variety of both meaty and vegetable-based foods. Live foods should be offered such as brine shrimp, earthworms and mosquito larvae. A quality flake and tablet food containing vegetable matter should also be included in their diet.
Sexing: Dimorphic
Breeding: Currently, the Buttikoferi Cichlid is being successfully bred in farms and aquariums. They are substrate spawners, excavating a pit to lay eggs in. During spawning time, the pair will become highly aggressive.
I appreciate you all!🙏👍🏻❤ ⬇️

wow friend looks amazing, oh very aggressive, have a nice day
Thanks, I always appreciate your support. You have a great day too my friend 👍🏻
Nice video! Keep up the good work!
Add some more fish and hybrid bios
I will, thanks for watching👍🏻
Nice video. Had plenty of aggressive fish over the years. The one Zebra Talipia I got was extremely aggressive even when small. He killed every fish in the tank and was my lone fish for years. One mean fish!! Would smack the glass if you stared too long. Was around 12" when he passed. Beautiful blue lips.
Thanks, yes they are a really aggressive fish. In the past I had one do the same. So far these 2 have been manageable but we know that could change at any moment. I appreciate the comment my friend 👍🏻
I couldn't take it, AT ALL. This mofo killed off ALL my gorgeous peacocks n haps. I got it out of the tank and flushed him down the toilet. Mofucka got on my nerves with his bullying and harrasment.
My big brother bought this fish when it was a baby and it got along well with our oscars, blood parrots and arowana and it was perfectly fine after he outgrew everyone, all my other fish started to lose a lot of scales, so I thought maybe I need to feed them more, all my fish died to him except my last oscar, so now I'm just realising my brother placed a ticking time bomb in the fish tank, the shop sells them very cheap too. It was like $5 for each or cheaper I forgot, well next time we'll be doing more research before buying any fish
Great way to put it, "ticking time bomb" is 100% correct. In my area they rum about $15-20 each as a baby. They do grow fast and once they get close to as big as other tank mates, game over most of the time for them. Sorry for you losses 🙏
Hey how's it going really great video it's helped me a lot. I'm wondering, we got a butticoferi with a tank and I know we're probably not going to be able to have a tank mate with him but he's got a 125 tank that I am setting up and he is around 7 inches do you think there's anything I could put with him I know generally most advanced fish keepers keep it as a species only tank but I'm wondering if something like an arowana that's already grown out would be okay with him? Or any other tank mate suggestion would be helpful.
Thank you for watching & the compliment. With Buttikoferi's it's always a challenge. I would have some hiding spots & break up their line if site. Always best to get them as juveniles with tank mates so they grow up together. But even that can turn quickly. See this video below to see what I have with mine. Hope it helps.

I love I love these fish they're my favorite fish
I love them too, not much info on them. They are a very aggressive fish so you must be careful when adding tank mates. Thanks for watching, much appreciated 👍🏻
cool fish
Thank you my friend, very much appreciated 👍🏻
He's gonna knock off those Oscars in time.
Oscar's did have size on them when I made this video, so it wasn't an issue. Now he's in my monster tank wich seems to tame his aggression. Atleast so far 😳
@@AquariumFishEnthusiasts I'd been there with a Buttikoferi 😁
@@FuturologyTheMusical me too 👍🏻
Great video mate. I’m getting three of these babies in a weeks time 14cm juvie’. Hopefully no aggression.
Hopefully not too aggressive, my two have been reasonable so for. Goodluck my friend. Thanks for watching, much appreciated 👍🏻
I think the key is too have a well stocked tank full of tough fish.
@@justinrvarga7236 and lots of places to block line of sight
Don't do it. 🤣🤣. No really don't!!
Cant believe that little guy is keeping up and even intimidating oscars wtf haha
Buttikoferi Cichlid is no joke 🙌🏻
Thanks for watching, much appreciated 👍🏻
Mine is 4 to 5 inches now, and he gets super mean especially during feeding time.
Oh yes
Hopefully his tank mates are much bigger then him 👍🏻
Hi im mandy i have one of these fish exacktly the same can u collect it as i cant cope it needs a home
Sure
I've got room if you don't want it.
I love these but most likely wont ever keep them as I prefer keeping a more peaceful tank!
Yes, these are very aggressive. Appreciate you watching.
I had a butterikoferi in my tank, he was such a bully and kept all the fish in the corner. We seen him diggin holes in the gravel and killing the other fish to put them in the holes.
Yes, they are very aggressive. That's why I try to have bigger fish with them.
They are very aggressive, they look beautiful but it's very hard to set a tank met
Very true. Doesn't always work but so far these 2 have been good with tank mates but it could change on a dime. Thanks for watching👍🏻
I’ve got a 12 inch female, her name’s Bumblebee. She’s in a 90 gallon with my little male Jag (planning to put him in a 125)
She used to be in my 125 until she hit 5-6 inches, crazy aggressive fish but tons of personality! My Texas pair were spawning and she still had them backing down.
Yes, they can be a very aggressive fish. Right now I have 2 and they seem to be under control since they are with bigger fish. But it could always turn quickly, so I'm always watching lol. Thanks for the comment, much appreciated 👍🏻
I have one he is alone
Probably a good idea 👍🏻
wow that green terror put up a good fight them talipia are worse than doviis at times
Yes he did. Dovii are beast, but Talipia are a close second. Thanks for watching, much appreciated 👍🏻
I had 4 fish in a 125 gallon but now I have only one a 12 inch buttarkfi he destroyed all his tank mates even a wolf Fish. But he the most loving fish when it comes to me even lets me pet him. Very picky eater
Sorry to hear that, they can get very aggressive but such a beautiful fish. Mine are doing fine with tank mates but u know it can turn quickly. That's why I have multiple tanks just in case. Thanks for watching my friend 👍🏻
@@AquariumFishEnthusiasts yea he about to be 8 years old this summer how old do they get
Usually 10-12 years
They can get 24 inches long and can weigh 11 pounds
Ok
You seem to like exaggerating a bit 😁
Wait, are you Nicholas Cage🤔 ?
Hmmmm maybe
Will that get me more subscribers 🤔
@@AquariumFishEnthusiasts 🤔🤭May be. I bought a Buttikoferi after watching your video.

@@kambos8185 they are beautiful fish, just beware and have another tank ready if things go aries.
@@AquariumFishEnthusiasts I already have a pond of approximately 3×3 meters which doesn't require any water change at anytime. It's a natural pond.
Mine is 16 maybe 17 inches now kill two 18-in plecos in 125 gallon fish tank but he leaves three small tetra fish alone
It's crazy.... things can change in a drop of a hat unfortunately
@@AquariumFishEnthusiasts you are not lying about that
I have one. It is fast growing & very aggressive. It has killed 2 of my Green Terrors & constantly attacks my Oscar.
Yes, they are beasts! Always have to monitor them & have a plan B to move them if things go bad.

Yes, the Buttikoferi is a monster. Had mine grow up with all my fish so he's ok ...at least for now 😳
Thanks for watching my friend 👍🏻
This is the fish that killed the hobby for me. They kill everything, dig up gravel and plants and just destroyed my aquarium...
Cichlids tend to do that unfortunately 🤦♂️

Yeah he ate one of 8 inch golden shivram, distroy one of my indian knife fish he is to aggresive he even bite my tiger oscar and copper head oscar and today he just killed one of my Clown knife fish by eating is fins up. And he is just know a 7 inch length . The onky thing that i have a king kong parrot be is handling him little bit. But my parrot and buttikofary they became friends ones to kill other prediators but as soon as i remove oscar they started fighting i mean they actually know politics. By Oscar i bought almost a foot oscar bht this 6 inch monster fightnned him so much that he just went back and hide arround my suction outlet of my top filter.
Sorry to hear.... but that's what they do, very aggressive and strong cichlid. That's why I always have a few back up tanks to put them in if they go crazy aggressive.
