I agree. The 60's-80's music era was just so special, and it can never be equaled. Today's just so bland, so boring so meaningless. I'm feel so blessed to have been a part of all of that great music from the past; to have been able to have experienced it when it was being created and brought to the air waves and all the live concerts.

Whitney would've murdered this song. The original is the best but Whitney is the best pop and R&B vocalist of all-time. Chaka is number two.
@@erica.7370 Brenda's voice is perfect for this song. Comfortable, pleasant and lovely. Just because Whitney had operatic vocals doesn't mean she's the right fit for every song. Sometimes Whitney's strong extended vocals overshadowed the music and that would ruin this particular song which has incredible background music.
Songs like this make me miss the music of the 80s. So haunting and beautiful.

If there's anything better than hearing an old classic, it's hearing an old classic performed live and it sounds even better than the record. And wow, James AND Michael backing her up on vocal with that great session band. Love how Brenda just delivers the song - rather than singing every bar in 6 different keys to show off, she just uses her range and power at the right moments of the song - turning it up on the bridge to the chorus and then back down low. One of my all-time faves, hasn't lost a thing - that bridge to chorus is GOOSEBUMP CITY!

Had the pleasure of seeing Ms. Russell in concert in Atlanta. Great performance! Standing ovation after almost every number. At one point in between songs, she teared up and said, “You people are so nice to me!” A truly classy lady!

that part where she transitions into the chorus at 1:22 minutes is emotional gold. where her lead vocal and the backing vocals come together to sing "back to love you" in unison. what other songs have that moment where the backing and lead vocals sing different vocals and melodies and then come together in unison? that is some epic stuff.
excellent observation - further, it only helps her backup singers are just 2 of the best crooners the 90's offered, James Ingram and Michael McDonald, (seems only 2 lead singers would know how to behave as backups, as they know what a lead needs in the song, lol)

The year 1988 was a spectacular one in music. As far as I"m concerned this stood out as the year's best song. Simply put a very powerful and great musical composition. I stop what I'm doing every time I hear it and get emotional. Thanks Brenda, Joe and the rest of the contributors who made this song tremendous.
This song is a little ahead of its time. It would have done even better had this been produced and sung between 1993-1994, a period where power ballads, adult contemporary and r&b were becoming mainstream, a time when 80's dance pop and hard rock had fizzed out. This song would've been perfect for the 1992-1994 era, a time that saw the emergence of Mariah Carey, Toni Braxton, Celine Dion, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Gloria Estafan, all singing memorable power ballads during this time period.

This is the song that spoke for the sadly short lived era in the 80s when contemporary jazz took a step in the smoothe direction. Fatboy Slim, Chris Botti, Diana Krall et al. owe Brenda a debt of gratitude drawing in so many fans of that genre.
It is such a tough difficult song to sing because of the intricacy of the melody and requires so much soul. Brenda Russell sang it unbelievably and so effortlessly! Many unknown singers internationally oversang it and lacked soul. It requires someone like Brenda Russell to make it a classic song.
It was ALL beautiful....but, that is truly a work of art..much more than just a song....Love will win in the end. Don't be-little this ...for God IS love.... He made you, he made me...full of heart, passion, and great compassion...he knows all....trust him. Classy and mysterious. I was so in love with this song as a teen when it was first released. There is something about it that moves my soul. Saw her in concert at Constitution Hall one Christmas as an adult in 2003. The song still resonates with me in 2022 and probably will do so through the years ahead.
