This song reminds me of summer evenings during my childhood in Baltimore, Maryland… sounds just like a warm night in June, the sun is just starting to go down and this song is playing in the radio just as I’m starting to fall asleep
I agree. The 60's-80's music era was just so special, and it can never be equaled. Today's just so bland, so boring so meaningless. I'm feel so blessed to have been a part of all of that great music from the past; to have been able to have experienced it when it was being created and brought to the air waves and all the live concerts.
@@rica.7370 Brenda's voice is perfect for this song. Comfortable, pleasant and lovely. Just because Whitney had operatic vocals doesn't mean she's the right fit for every song. Sometimes Whitney's strong extended vocals overshadowed the music and that would ruin this particular song which has incredible background music.
If there's anything better than hearing an old classic, it's hearing an old classic performed live and it sounds even better than the record. And wow, James AND Michael backing her up on vocal with that great session band. Love how Brenda just delivers the song - rather than singing every bar in 6 different keys to show off, she just uses her range and power at the right moments of the song - turning it up on the bridge to the chorus and then back down low. One of my all-time faves, hasn't lost a thing - that bridge to chorus is GOOSEBUMP CITY!
Amazing her much Brenda Russell's live performance of "Piano In The Dark" sounds like the studio version! As a child of the 80's I have to ask, where'd all the singers go?? You just don't hear music like this anymore!
This is a brilliant song in oh, so many ways, lyrical, production, arrangement, stage presence, and most importantly, a singer who knows how to present the song, not herself! This is a timeless piece of music.
My husband invited me to a dance floor in our small town, and this was the song we held each other to. He’s passed away now In my memory of that dance is wonderful. God bless you and it’s listeners.
that part where she transitions into the chorus at 1:22 minutes is emotional gold. where her lead vocal and the backing vocals come together to sing "back to love you" in unison. what other songs have that moment where the backing and lead vocals sing different vocals and melodies and then come together in unison? that is some epic stuff.
excellent observation - further, it only helps her backup singers are just 2 of the best crooners the 90's offered, James Ingram and Michael McDonald, (seems only 2 lead singers would know how to behave as backups, as they know what a lead needs in the song, lol)
One of my favorite songs. I remember this used to play on the radio all the time, and where i first learned about Brenda Russell! This lady brings it!! Bravo!
Had the pleasure of seeing Ms. Russell in concert in Atlanta. Great performance! Standing ovation after almost every number. At one point in between songs, she teared up and said, “You people are so nice to me!” A truly classy lady!
I was young when this song came out, I knew nothing about playing piano in the dark. But so loved this song. I saw James Ingram and Michael McDonald singing background I know this was something nice.
True singer and songwriter. The girl has the most beautiful and powerful voice. Yet soft and subtle. It doesn't get any better. Brenda Russell sings and shines................ like the brightest diamond ~ kimie
I recently downloaded a bunch of Brenda Russell's music, and I'm so upset that I wasn't more familiar with her works, she has quickly become one of my favorite artist. She a great writer and singer, Thank for sharing your precious gift.
A voz... A interpretação .... Brenda mexe comigo... Ouço essa musica em sua voz... Tudo fica diferente a minha volta... Meu estado de consciência muda se eleva... Obrigado Brenda!
How am I just seeing this AMAZING performance in 20effin23?? So beautiful. Hearing her live, I hear a bit of Dionne Warwick in Brenda's wonderful voice.
This is the song that spoke for the sadly short lived era in the 80s when contemporary jazz took a step in the smoothe direction. Fatboy Slim, Chris Botti, Diana Krall et al. owe Brenda a debt of gratitude drawing in so many fans of that genre.
The year 1988 was a spectacular one in music. As far as I"m concerned this stood out as the year's best song. Simply put a very powerful and great musical composition. I stop what I'm doing every time I hear it and get emotional. Thanks Brenda, Joe and the rest of the contributors who made this song tremendous.
This song is a little ahead of its time. It would have done even better had this been produced and sung between 1993-1994, a period where power ballads, adult contemporary and r&b were becoming mainstream, a time when 80's dance pop and hard rock had fizzed out. This song would've been perfect for the 1992-1994 era, a time that saw the emergence of Mariah Carey, Toni Braxton, Celine Dion, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Gloria Estafan, all singing memorable power ballads during this time period.
I was so in love with this song as a teen when it was first released. There is something about it that moves my soul. Saw her in concert at Constitution Hall one Christmas as an adult in 2003. The song still resonates with me in 2022 and probably will do so through the years ahead.
I remember this song came out a few years after I graduated from high school. One of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. This song doesn't seem to age. It's as good in 2021 as it was way back then.
This 1992 Earth Voice Concert in Japan featured Lee Ritenour, Phil Perry, Bobby Caldwell, Brenda Russell, Abraham Laboriel, James Ingram, Michael McDonald, Anita Baker, and others.
Pure talent. No weird backup show, no skintight sexualization, nothing overtly obscene. Just pure talent.
❤❤❤
Yup
Very true, which I really appreciate.
Indeed 🥺🎹🎼 great performance magníficent🇺🇸
She sounds Fabulous Live and Looks Great!! This record came out in the 87/88 Summer when I was pregnant with my first child, who is currently 36!!
You know you're good when James Ingram & Michael McDonald sing back-up for you!
Duuuhhh? She's THE Brenda Russel. 🤣
Wow! I agree!
GODDAMM right! I agree.
L.U.X. 🥂🍾 and Lee Ritnour on guitar
WOW!!!! BACKUP SINGERS DAMN!!!!! Drop they mic🎤
Watching and (still enjoying) in 2024!
this is a type of song to rest of life!
Lindo d minha época wue era jovem tempo bom que. Musicai linda 😂😂😂❤
There is not a new female singer today that could compare to this woman

You forgot to mention "sipping on some good whiskey on thr rocks"
Lol, I hope they weren't sipping on whiskey as a child
@@Input1914 lol good point. I must have been sipping on whiskey as a child.

Her voice is beautiful. I miss singers, songs, just music in general like this
Maravilhosa música....de sonhar!!
I feel you Shaina. Brenda Russell is the real deal.

Same
Luv this at home alone by the fire thinking about that one special person ❤😂
Studio quality vocals and two amazing backup singers. This is stunning live work!
+Kevin Pauley
I think they had the amazing Phil Perry back there too.
❤
For a live performance she sounds impeccable. Cant think of many modern vocalists that could pull this off.
Sean Murphy Yeah I know right without the help of auto tune.
Tru dat
Sean Murphy yeah almost everybody need studio trics to sound good i guess computers do everything now.
Whitney would've murdered this song. The original is the best but Whitney is the best pop and R&B vocalist of all-time. Chaka is number two.

Songs like this make me miss the music of the 80s. So haunting and beautiful.
IM FROM BRAZIL I like very much this song congratulation America
Everybody dies...everything dies.
What do you mean haunting? It is a word I would use as well. Almost mystical.
Best decade ever.
... that’s because music was still done by musicians
ingram and McDonald are just amazing...All live no gimmick...Just incredible live version.
Backing vocals JAMES INGRAM & MICHAEL MACDONALD,, lux !
Tbm percebi isso ...show
Paulo Roberto por acaso eles são do Toto ??
Não Fernando ! Mas o Michael Macdonald, já foi acompanhado pela banda Toto em turnês.
Ah sim obgd!!!!
wonderful!
She should ve gotten a Grammy for this song.
She's great! Gourgeous voice, hair, skin color, everything perfect! Backing vocals amazing as she is!
And her background vocals is James Ingrams and Michael Donald
She is GORGEOUS ❤

What a beautiful soul. I smile every time I hear this song. When, I had my son 1988, this song was playing. I always think back to that blessed day.

Did she do the echo work or sound system?

You absolutely do, Bruno Mars is making a living off of it
You’re absolutely right,Kevin!
@@menoknow1972 He's good, but not even in the same Universe as Brenda was.
Good question
She sounds even better live. ❤
RIP to James Ingram.
Brenda was absolutely wonderful! She also penned "Dinner With Gershwin" & "Get Here"!
Perfect live vocals. You can't say that for 99.9% of the mainstream acts out there today. Not even Adele
you're right!
Wow, this takes me back to a warm hearted time! Just wow!
I could listen to 2:15 to :25 on repeat all day ❤️
Michael Mcdonald and James Ingram as her backup singers and Lee Ritenour on guitar awesome!!! ... I love Breda's voice
Finally one million plus and counting views🤗🫡
