    On an Early Winter Bushcraft Trip Using only Natural Materials I Build a Primitive Bark Roof A-Frame Survival Shelter in the Fresh Snow and Cook all my food over a campfire, I spend the night with a wool blanket for my dog I do some campfire cooking steak on a stick and cast Iron Cooking Breakfast bacon and eggs. I use Fatwood to light my fire. I harvest Chaga fungus and make tea. I stay overnight and wake to a fresh snowfall. Winter has arrived and transformed the forest into a beautiful blanket of white.
    There are not many materials to effectively make a waterproof shelter but I manage to accomplish the task using 1 huge pieces if Ash bark I carefully remove from a fallen ash tree. I also use Leaves Debris and Sod as well as branches, sticks and twigs to insulate and boughs to make a comfortable sleeping platform.
    I chose a large boulder to shelter me from the wind and to reflect heat from my fire to keep me warm and it worked great. I also had minimal Gear Just My Axe, Saw, 2 knives, cup pan sleeping bag backpack
    This is in Ontario Canada.

    Just watched this from beginning to end. It's videos like yours that make the internet even that much more interesting. And I don't even camp but it was an adventure to watch yours. No annoying background music, no over explaining of anything...just you, your tools, nature, great subject and of course Bella!! Earned a new subscriber. And who knows...maybe I'll take up some form of camping like this but at 60 years old, I don't know if I'd be able to. :( But will watch you anyways! Thanks again. Stay safe Ted!!

      Nineteenth Window
      According to the meaning of the verse:
      The seven heavens and the earth and all within them extol His limitless glory, and there is nothing but it extols His limitless glory and praise,1
      the All-Glorious Maker has attached innumerable meanings and instances of wisdom to the heavenly bodies so that it is as if, in order to express His glory and beauty, He has adorned the heavens with the words of the suns, moons and stars. To the beings in the atmosphere also He has attached instances of wisdom and meanings and aims, as if to make it speak through the words of the thunder, lightning, and drops of rain, and give instruction in the perfection of His wisdom and beauty of His mercy.
      He causes the head of the earth to speak too with its meaningful words known as animals and plants and displays the perfections of His art to the universe. Then He makes the plants and trees speak, all words of that head, through the words of their leaves, flowers, and fruits and again proclaims the perfection of His art and beauty of His mercy. Their flowers and fruits, too, He makes speak, through the words of their seeds, and gives instruction to the aware and conscious in the subtleties of His art and the perfection of His dominicality. And so, out of these innumerable words of glorification, we shall lend our ears and listen to a single shoot and a single flower and their manner of expression, and learn the way in which they testify.
      Yes, all plants and all trees describe their Maker with numerous tongues in such a way that they leave those who study them in amazement,causing them to exclaim: “Glory be to God! How wonderfully they bear witness to Him!”
      Yes, the glorification of plants at the time their flowers open, and the moment they produce new shoots, and when they offer their smiling words is as beautiful and clear as themselves. For through the beautiful mouth of each flower and the tongues of its orderly shoots and the words of its well-measured seeds, the order demonstrates wisdom and is observedly within a balance which demonstrates knowledge. And the balance is within an embroidery of art which demonstrates skill and craft. And the embroidery of art is within an adornment which demonstrates favour and munificence. And the adornment is within subtle scents which demonstrate mercy and bestowal. And these meaningful qualities one within the other form such a tongue of testimony that it both describes the All-Beauteous Maker through His Names, and portrays Him through His attributes, and expounds the manifestation of His Names, and expresses His making Himself loved and known.
      If you hear such testimony from a single flower, will your doubts and suspicions and heedlessness persist when you listen to all the flowers in the dominical gardens on the face of the earth and hear with what elevated strength they proclaim the necessary existence and unity of the All-Glorious Maker? If they do persist, can it be said of you that you are a conscious human being?
      Come, now look carefully at a tree! See its delicate mouth within the orderly emergence of the leaves in spring, and the blossoms opening in a measured manner, and the fruits swelling with wisdom and mercy and dancing at the blowing of the breeze in the hands of the branches like innocent children. See the just balance within the wise order expressed through the tongue of the leaves becoming green at a generous hand, through that of the flowers smiling with the joy of a favour received, and through the words of the fruits laughing through a manifestation of mercy. See the careful arts and embroideries within the balance demonstrating justice; and the mercy within the skilful embroideries and adornment; and the various sweet tastes and delightful scents, which indicate mercy and bestowal; and the seeds, each of which is a miracle of power within the agreeable tastes: all these point in most clear fashion to the necessary existence and unity of an All-Wise, Generous, Compassionate, Beneficent, Bountiful Maker, a Bestower of Beauty and Favours, to the beauty of His mercy and perfection of His dominicality. Thus, if you can listen at the same time to the tongues of disposition of all the trees on the earth, you will see and understand what exquisite jewels are to be found in the treasury of the verse:
      All that is in the heavens and on the earth extols God’s limitless glory.O you unhappy heedless one who supposes himself to be free through his ingratitude! If the All-Generous One of Beauty, Who makes Himself known to you and loved by you through these innumerable tongues had not wanted you to know Him, He would have silenced them. Since they have not been silenced, they should be heeded. You cannot be saved by closing your ears in heedlessness. For the universe does not fall silent at you stopping up your ears, the beings within it will not be silent, the witnesses to Divine unity will not hold their tongues. And for sure, they will condemn you...

    I have WONDERED WHY more bushcrafters don't notch the ridge beam of shelters like that to keep side supports in place! THIS WAS HEAVY WORK, even for a strapping guy from Ontario! Meanwhile, you had just the right resources near enough to both construct and to insulate a winter shelter. More snow would mean more insulation. THANKS for showing a deeper browse bed rather than going with a 'cosmetic covering' like so many demonstrators do. Almost nobody shows how to clean out a natural spring source, a frequent necessity on my trail hiking backpack trips.

    I have so many questions! How long did you practice that skill before getting an entire piece like that? How deep do you need to go to keep the integration? Like past the cambium? The lines on the inside of the bark and the tree, are those natural or a result of the process? What kind of knife and hatchet/ax are those? Recommendation for an inexpensive beginner brand that will let me start with

    • @TheRealTedBaird
      @TheRealTedBaird  3 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Not much practice. Its not too difficult if you are oatient and have the correct tree. If the tree is green in spring it will come off in miniutes you could do it for sure. You want to go down to the wood. Each species will be different then others as to how well it does or doesn't work. The lines are from the process is it was a green fresh section of bark its possible to get a perfect sheet no lines sometimes. The Axe is Fiskars chopping axe. They are not expensive and the Machete is a Speck Plus SP8 Machete by Ontario knife company you can get it here amzn.to/2GezpuJ
      its not expensive. 👍👊

    Wuw a new comfortable fully camouflaged shelter, you never cease to amaze! Here we can never use or simply harvest tree parts for personal use, unless authorized by the forest ranger, so trying to build these shelters remains a dream .... unless one is truly life threatening: therefore it is better to know how to do them
    Bella knows where it is most comfortable to stay just in case of snow, adorable and sweet fur friend. Have good snowy camping plans to share with us and for us in this amazing Ontario. Bye my dear friend, Ermes Ivo and Wanda from Kanaltal - FVG

    • @TheRealTedBaird
      @TheRealTedBaird  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really no. Yet the entire thing took 4 hrs till fire lit and food cooking including self filming which is a lot so not too bad. A tarp or a tent better of course. The bark took about 1 hr to remove but from a live tree in spring it would only be 15 min . Its the best natural waterproof method IMO in this region traditional wigwams or a but further south longhouses both would have used bark so its definitely possible even without these tools. They used birch and elm and likely ash i believe.
