    On an Early Winter Bushcraft Trip Using only Natural Materials I Build a Primitive Bark Roof Lean To Survival Shelter and Cook all my food over a campfire on a stone. I also Light my fire in primitive fashion with a knife and rock and Chaga fungus. I stay overnight and wake to a fresh snowfall. Winter has arrived and transformed the forest into a beautiful blanket of white.
    There are not many materials to effectively make a waterproof shelter but I manage to accomplish the task using 2 huge pieces if Ash bark I carefully remove from a fallen ash tree. I also use bark to make natural cordage and use branches, sticks and twigs to make a comfortable sleeping platform.
    I chose a mini rock canyon to shelter me from the wind and to reflect heat from my fire to keep me warm and it worked great. I also had minimal Gear Just My Axe, Saw, 2 knives, a pot, sleeping bag backpack and Chaga.
    This is in Ontario Canada.

    Top notch bushcraft Ted. One of your best video projects yet. Great use of techniques from the longhouse project for a solo winter shelter. Definitely best of class work - thanks for bringing us along. Makes me wonder if you're getting ready for another crack at ALONE.

      Ha! If only they would let me bring those steaks bacon and eggs next time lol. But ya that would be sweet. Appreciate the awesome review thanks. I def sourced the Ash bark because of what we learned about it with the longhouse project I keep learning. This time it was much harder to get the bark but luckily it had just enough sap moisture and strength to work nicely. Appreciat the feedback. Take care 🤙😎🏕🔥

    Really appreciate your video! Just happened to see it today and found your skills at roughing it were amazing! Taking off the tree bark was a very cool idea. Makes me think that I would be hard pressed to make it in the wilderness. I used to camp all the time with my late wife, Bonnie, and our three kids. Thank God for a pop-up camper!!!
    I have to use a cpap machine so I brought a huge marine battery to run it and a fan when we didn’t have hookups for power. So many great memories...

    Same bark peeling y’all used on Shawn James’ (My Self Reliance) Longhouse, such an impressive build! Using it for shelter is cool too.....but would be nice if used on permanent shelter build. Well done Ted!

      Thank you. Yes similar to Shawns but different species of tree and much harder to remove this time as it had little to no sap. I would like to do a more long term shelter also. Hopefully i will soon

    A huge thumbs up Ted, that was a super building project, and it looks very durable nestled in the stones and tree. A forest is a great provider, once you know where to find the materials, collect them and use them. Unfortunately we are very restricted here in England - lots of prohibitive laws and shrinking wild places, and too many people. I really enjoyed your video, thanks for sharing your adventure. :))

    • @TheRealTedBaird
      @TheRealTedBaird  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks Avia yes the forest is an amazing provider such great materials I'm always learning new things. The more and more I do these things the more I realize what I have always been thankful for and that how much wilderness we have here we are very fortunate. I understand that many places no longer have it. I hope to inspire more to get outside and fall in love with wild places and fight for their protections. Thanks a lot 4 the support I'm glad you enjoyed it. Have a great weekend

    Ted had to watch this one again after the episode of you and Jim crossing the height of land, no skeeters in this one, debarking that tree was cool, so was the design of the shelter. That's a lot of work without a groundman to supply materials.

I am so glad you never undid the camp you had made. Next time can you be a bit kinder to yourself and tarp, have a comfortable bed and enjoy and relax more. Just chill, sit and ponder. • @Objective-Observer
    @Objective-Observer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Wow! That was a monumental build! You handled that debarking remarkably! The only thing I think I would have done differently- would be to deal with the weather where I live: make an A line roof, with a single ridge pole and give your self two walls to block the wind. But where I live, the wind blows more days than not.
    Thanks for taking us along. I enjoyed the trip.

    • @TheRealTedBaird
      @TheRealTedBaird  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Thanks a lot. That's a good idea for sure. It's hard to tell but I actually made the center pole higher and tapered it down on other side to help shed water. It won't block the wind like ure idea but I think I may add side walls if I go back in the colder months. Luckly It's a mini canyon I picked that keeps a lot if wind out naturally but in some areas like urs your design suggestion would be a must. Appreciate your thoughts thx 4 watching. Until next time ✌😎

      Hi Michael Glad you found the channel good to have you here. The tea was Chaga Tea. Chaga is a fungus that grows predominantly on Birch Trees it has a lot of medicinal properties and it's also the substance I uses to catch the spark to make my fire. Thanks for asking. Chat later

    Great job Ted. That was a great build. I see you went with bark for the roof, nice work getting it off. I bet it helped to have done the Viking house for practice. I like that spot by the rock. Plus we got the rock slab cooking demo at the end. That's was a nice find first day. Getting better each time. Can't wait till the next one.

    • @TheRealTedBaird
      @TheRealTedBaird  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey man Thanks! Yes building the longhouse gave me the knowledge and confidence to go after that bark. I keep learning everytime. I got lucky it was a blow down as opposed to dead fall because there was just enough sap left to get it off eventhough it was late season and almost dead. The spot by the rock was great at reflecting heat and keeping wind out it was a dead space nice and cozy. Got lucky with the flat rock 4 sure. Sometimes things just come together as you go just gotta get started. Glad u enjoyed it. Appreciate your thoughts. Until next time Take care

    I watched you and your brother on alone. Great to see you have a youtube channel now! That knife is beast! The Becker BK.....? I Loved the bark roof, very resourceful! I thought you would make a lean to shelter against the rock face. have an indoor fire against the rock face to radiate heat back into your shelter. over all, Great video! That food made my mouth water! Wash it down with Chaga tea. I need to go to the mountains now!

    • @TheRealTedBaird
      @TheRealTedBaird  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Brother. Awesome you saw us on Alone what an adventure that was. Ya I considered the Lean-to against the wall but in the end this was better for a number of reasons still reflected the heat and closed off a full side the fire had rocks behind to reflect also. And the sleeping platform was much better constructed where I made it. ....nicer view also lol. I may go back and close it off 4 winter weather. Food turned out awesome was particularly impressed with the eggs on the rock. Came out perfect no gritt. That Bark is an amazing material cant beat it. Thx 4 tuning in brother talk later

      Thanks a lot Bonnie! I definitely knew that I could use the Ash bark after we used it to build the longhouse. It was a little trickier to remove this time but worked out well in the end. So if the end of the world comes about or zombies attack in force I would want to be tagging along with this guy. Seems to understand all the basics, get off the wet ground, use a rock face to keep heat close to you and best of all he understands how to keep rain and snow off his head. Makes his own cordage and cooks on rocks. Oh yes just because he knows a lot about living rough, he still eats well in his videos and that is OK as he didn't pretend this was a catch and cook video. I think I need to watch more of his videos to see if he is on his game every time.
