  • We all have a favorite sandwich, and chances are it is connected to where we grew up. We don’t think about it, but a sandwich’s popularity and quality can be tied to the state in which it is cooked. Depending on what state you are visiting, you may want to try the sandwich the state is known for. We have done half the work for you by compiling a list of every state’s signature sandwich, and all you have to do is book the plane ticket. Looking for the best tuna melt? Wondering where you can find a world class Monte Cristo? Join us as we list the absolute best sandwich in every state.

      It was first made at the Leland Motel. It was made for lunch breaks of downtown Springfield’s workers. Don’t knock it til you try it! It’s layered bread/toast, meat (hamburger, chicken, and ham are popular) French fries and cheese sauce...the cheese sauce isn’t just cheese, it’s made with a roux, mustard and other assorted items. Some places put chili theirs and others use different levels of spicy heat! They really are good. I usually get a ponyshoe because they are smaller. I don’t get them very often because they are a lot good and calories.

      Strange they would highlight a Cuban sandwich in Miami when the Cuban originated in Ybor City, in Tampa, FL over 100 years ago. They've always been pressed for as long as I've lived and I was born, raised and still live in Tampa for almost 64 years. Mayo is not natural to the original Cuban sandwich. The original was roast pork, ham, swiss cheese, pickles and mustard on Cuban bread. Sometimes salami is included because of the Italian population that also lived in Ybor. The best Cuban bread is from La Segunda Central Bakery.

    • @ForeverRememberable
      @ForeverRememberable 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think the choice made sense kinda. The horseshoe is popular in central and southern Illinois, it's pretty famous in Springfield. I like that for one time in a video about Illinois it's not all about Chicago but showcases the rest of the state. I don't think Chicago style hot dogs are that popular outside of northerner Illinois, I mean I never had one until I went to college and then after that Portillos started getting locations in central Illinois. I think the Italian beef would have been a good option but I like that it was the horseshoe but it is good and is popular in certain parts of the state.

    Chicago Italian Beef, skipping the hot peppers with sweet peppers instead and using only a very thin pickle as it was when I was a boy seventy years ago. We never heard of giardiniera as they seem to give now; it overcomes the true flavors.

    As a native Minnesotan I am appalled that you would name Hells Kitchen (not the Gordon Ramsay one) as the best Juicy Lucy. 5-8 Club and the Nook are the real go to’s for an original Juicy Lucy.
    And yes, I know about another place that begins with “M” but it’s not even a close third for someone who knows a good Juicy Lucy.

    • @chouseification
      @chouseification 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      this ^^. Did Hell's Kitchen pay these folks to list them, as that's a "trendy" place, but not a regular haunt unless you live right by it. To even consider calling them the best one is sort of silly in context since they move so few of them compared to the places actually known for the Juicy Lucy (each place spells it a bit different). I'd call out 5-8 as the best, and even their WSP location isn't too bad; Matt's is an odd atmosphere, and their batch ordering system often makes for long waits, plus the place is a real dump. :P

    thank you for recognizing nebraska as the home of the rueben. i worked a few gigs at the omaha press club, which claims to be where the sandwich was first made, and they take it dead serious. many people don't realize it but omaha, nebraska used to be a midwestern refuge the for jewish diaspora around the mid 1800's. also said, omaha, was the where the first brisket was made. i have nothing to substantiate that other than old mens' tales. it makes sense though. we had the beef here, we had the stockyards here, we had the slaughterhouses here, it seems perfectly reasonable to cure the meat before shipping it off to the coast while keeping a pocketful for local use.

    OK I lived in IL My whole life until 3 years ago. I never heard of a horseshoe until a road trip, my fat foodie curiosity and a stop in Springfield. I looked up foods that would be on my way to STL. I tried one, not bad, very filling and rich. HOWEVER, how the hell does it beat out the Beef sandwich?! Seriously MILLIONS of people eat beef from all over the world when in chi town. I've never heard a tourist ask for a Horseshoe. They are good though and if you can try one have at it.

    • @ForeverRememberable

      While I do agree that the Italian beef would have been a good option, the horseshoe is mainly known in central and southern Illinois. I mean I grew up eating them but I'm from central Illinois, as you said in Springfield they're pretty famous. I'm actually happy that for one time in a video about something popular in Illinois the rest of the state other than Chicago gets a chance to shine but hey that's just what I think. Horseshoes are great and people should try them.
