  • Intel recently revealed its plan to invest $20 billion initially in two new chip plants in Licking County, Ohio -- near the City of Columbus, but ultimately expects a total of eight fabs in a plan that could reach $100 billion.
    Watch Intel's CEO Pat Gelsinger, the company's SVP of manufacturing, Keyvan Esfarjani and the Governor of Ohio, Mike DeWine talk about the new project.

    As a Danish Intel investor, it makes me happy that Pat is not giving up fabrication of semiconductors in the USA, we can't rely on everything being in Asia, looking forward to Intel also expanding in Europe! Win/Win

      A lot of these jobs are gonna go to engineers and robots so it’ll be great if you have a college degree if you only have hs diploma you’re probably not gonna have many options.

      @@bentrinker1937 I know several people personally who worked for good money at intel in both arizona and oregon and they didnt have more than HS diplomas, yeah they werent the big dollar earners like those who literally design things for intel but they were assembly line people who watched the machines for errors.

    Thank you Intel for choosing Ohio and the United States. I think you will find Ohioians some of the smartest and industrious people in the world. Finally a company has realized that making something in America makes more sense instead of overseas. Now we can end other countries setting our production. Again, thank you and I hope other companies that rely on foreign labor will return production to the US.

    does intel have a working process (proven) for advanced nodes. They have been using TSMC to manufacture their "cutting edge" chips. They are asking for grants and tax breaks and subsidies but do they actually have a proven process. Can they make 20A chips or is it just a "roadmap"?

      If the CHIPS act goes through, the government (tax payers) will unlock $52 billion dollars worth of funding for initiatives like this. Intel is likely spending nothing on this venture, and Ohio will likely be providing them with further tax breaks on every dollar Intel spends and earns at this site in Ohio.

      @@jlehm $52B is not just for Intel, it's to be shared with TSMC Samsung's investment in US as well. Also it is not just money, it is still a big question if Intel is capable of pulling through 2nm/18A technology by 2025; There's still no sign of 7nm (Intel 4) yet.

    So are they going to discriminate against anyone not in their 20’s? Recruiting at colleges? There’s plenty of workers available with an AAS degree. We all got one after the crash of 2008.

    Sad that Cleveland has Welfare people, and the kids are dropping out of school, and we have large illiterate communities. 50 years ago, the ladies were told not to vote for Welfare. 50 years later we have welfare people looking for free monies not working people. BLM made Cleveland close businesses and get rid of thousands of jobs. they wanted $6.00 per hour increase. No company could provide so they closed, got rid of employees and installed automation.

    It will create about 3,000 jobs for the college educated that average around $135k not for the average worker. What it will do like in Austin Texas, Research Triangle in North Carolina and in the future Huntsville Alabama drive up the cost of housing and land gentrify the neighborhoods. Foreign investors will start buying up property. For everyone tech job four new service jobs are created. Where do you think service workers will live if they can't afford the rent? In the SF Bay area RVs or trailers are used for substitute housing.

    Yes, this is absolutely amazing! But also terrible. I have friends that live right where Intel is and so many of them are having to move, and haven’t been given much time. Other than that, Congrats to Intel!

      It seems you don’t understand economies of scale, or US tax code. Also, is there a risk of environmental harm? What chips exactly will be produced there and are chemical processes outside pvd/pcd and manufacturing processes outside laser and microwave being used?
