This is from 8/28/1993 and it's great to remember! I forgot how funny Billy was. Yes. If there is a full recording of the benefit I would LOVE to see it. full sets of natalie and belly esp
Beautiful American, Natalie Merchant, then age 27, and charismatic English, Billy Bragg, age 33, performed live this medley, in 1990 or something. "Summertime".....
My recollection is that this was Natalie's first solo performance after announcing she was leaving 10,000 Maniacs. Fantastic concert that included Buffalo Tom and Belly.
@sbryant328 cant top your comment there: natalie merchant has a voice from heaven, writes all her stuff + is an artist of first-rate integrity -- and bloody beautiful [+ totally pc] in a good way
"I don't remember the words". LOL. Even so, pure perfection. We all adore you immensely Natalie. This Avatar is our first meeting April 8, 1999. Eleven years prior to the very day my son was born and my daughter named Natalie-Anne in her honor. Everyone MUST see the Mermaid Avenue documentary Man in the Sand of Billy attempting to conduct an interview while Natalie picks at his eyebrows and eats imaginary fleas! Hahaha! Epic Natalie. "Stop it, I am trying to talk and be filmed. It will be on BBC2 and you will be eating fleas off me eyebrows. Think about it, you are not at home now. BEHAVE!" Oh what a marvelous friendship. Keep up the great work Miss Merchant! th-cam.com/video/qbrpZBjIBpU/w-d-xo.html
It actually looks like they got her attention before tossing it to her. And then she said she was going to "save it for the drive home." Sorry it took me 11 years to comment on this here.
+Will Benshoof The song is called ''Bread and Circuses'-written by Natalie Merchant and Billy Bragg. It was a 'B side' to one of his singles in 1990 and it later appeared on the 2005 'Natalie Merchant Retrospective' double album.
8/28/1993 not long after natalie announced leaving 10000 maniacs. Saw 10000 maniacs 7/7/93 in mass then she left the band first of August. Went to this benefit with a friend.

Bread and circuses is a B side to one of Billy Braggs 12's from memory. I've got it on vinyl here somewhere.

Do you have more of this show? I was at the concert. Belly, and Buffalo Tom played as well.

perfect. perfect. perfect. perfect. PERFECT.
...but seriously, people need to not throw stuff at Natalie (0:12). That was not okay.

Eu gosto muito da Natalie!!!
Brazilian kisses for you!!!
When was this recorded? And a "setlist" also would be nice, because I don't know all of the songs.
I have "Bread and Circus's" downloaded. What is the name of the song she sings on the intro of it? It's a great song to use as an intro/combo song.
Summertime from Porgie and Bess I believe.
What is the name of the song that follows "Summertime"? It sounds like a English Folk Tune.

How odd. I just watched this video today. Maybe at the time you post this.
Holy fuck.....

Whatever she caught she said she would "save for the drive home." I wonder what it was?

GOD she is a flirt! :D
sometimes this world is just alright.
Sometimes it's good to rehearse that sort of thing.
Great stuff - but those are AWFUL shorts that Billy is wearing!
Only pertentious capitalists would be so concerned about Billy's shorts!
Unlikely he's English...
