Crikey! is that me on bass before I went baldy? I'll never forget that night. The highlight of a great tour for me. The velvet revolution!! History being made before our very eyes. Thanks Bill.
1:09 hilarious and fully justified. Billy's like a clumsy Old English Sheepdog hearing a gentle, subtle, nuanced vocal and thinking he can improve it by grabbing a mike and drowning it out with overenthusiastic barking (Essex or otherwise).😅
Same tour I saw you all at Merriweather Post in Baltimore - the day before Earth Day when you all went to the Mall in DC. I will never forget that show… ever…
what a gem! I discovered your music as a freshman in uni in '87, and I feel like i'm 18 again every time i head "A New England". lifelong fan here from the Philippines!
Love this. Keep 'em coming. Your harmonies put me in mind of some of Keef's in peak Stones: slightly raucous, but absolutely essential to the success of the song.
Very good job, Billy, Michael, Natalie, and Wiggy. Read the Wikipedia article about Olomouc, which I was impressed with. It's originally a Roman name adapted by Slavic peoples who migrated into the area. I wonder if that made me think of Mexico, as the community name appears akin to some of the Aztec community names I have seen in Mexico.
Great track, not heard that version by you before. Big thanks to the bootlegger. Those turn-ups on your 501's bring back memories, I wore the same at time. Went well with the DM shoes..
Michael Stipe understands what made the original so great and sings it slightly behind the beat. (As opposed to Blink-182's earnest cover which completely failed to capture the vibe.)
Loved it, thank you…another one I love which must be of a similar vintage as Michael has the same clothes on. Amazing voices…and you’re also great Billy! th-cam.com/video/DPIpyB_ZtJ0/w-d-xo.html
I always flirt with death I could kill, but I don't care about it I can face your threats And stand up straight and tall and shout about it....... Only Ones hymn rule!
The Only Ones were a fantastic Australian band that never really got the recognition their music deserved. Great to see this clip from Billy - I didn't know it existed.
The Saints and Go Betweens, amongst others, may have been fantastic Australian bands that never got the recognition they deserved, but The Only Ones are/were (not sure if their 2003 reunion is permanent!) a fantastic, 75% English, 25% Scottish band formed in South London, who never got the recognition they deserved.
Stipe is stupendous still.Saw REM for the first time on the Green Tour and they thrilled us.

The velvet revolution is a heartening story.
Natalie! That's exactly how i used to dance in the 80's. So much fun!❤
Natalie's dance solo is the most beautiful 1980's dance ever !!!!!! ❤❤❤
I danced like that last week to a band playing XTC and Ian Dury covers. Who cares?
Oh sweet summer child. That dance was born in the 80s.
@@popefang Hit me with your rhythm stick!!
that's the *VERY* 80s Molly Ringwald dance from 'The Breakfast Club'
@@jrchancey stand corrected! :) I was 17 at the time, and defo remember this being in the ether! ❤
Michael Stipe and Billy Bragg, together and a great song. Just wow
Seeing Natalie is always good; seeing her dance always brings a broad smile.
Unexpected treatment of an underrated song. Cheers!
No, not underrated. Just a much neglected Power Pop masterpiece!
The side eye Stipe gives Bragg when he joins in on the chorus is perfect.

Thank you. This reminds me of how to feel hope, how to dance freely, to sing loudly. We need reminders...
Thanks for sharing! Such a great song.

Sweet! I've never heard this cover before, this is great! Thanks, Billy!

Beautiful
THAT'S MY DAD PLAYING BASS!
Thank you for uploading.
Wow! I've never seen this! Awesome! There's also some footage from St. Wenceslas Square in Prague, as well.
Brilliant! Didn't know that existed! If its Michael Stipe, i guess he can sing whatever words he likes😂😂😂
Super constellation!
Natalie jumps out of nowhere and she is so into it. Just lovely as she can be!
one of the best song of this and also another planet
Cool cover...and images of Wenceslas Square in Prague!

Wow. Bring me back, please!
This is the exclusive bad ass stuff that I subscribed for
Superb………..Mr Bragg and Mr Stipe what a combination ❤❤❤
Thank you for finding and sharing this.
Good attempt at covering this fantastic song guys . Loved it
Absolutely amazing
I lived in the flat above when they did this. I kept banging on the roof telling them to quieten down as I was trying to watch The Bill.
wish natalie had sung on this too, great cover & love this era of power pop, the mighty lemon drops tore this one up on their version!
Thanks for posting! This is fab!!👏👏👐
Classic!
Fabulous!
So damn fun! Thanks for sharing this!
Thank you, Rj in Oz

oh what a treat
❤ bloody love it!
I had such a huge crush on Natalie... This video is soooo amazing!
Her new album, Keep Your Courage, is pretty great! Her voice is as great as ever.
I still do.
DIO BONO QUANTO AMORE TUTTO IN UNA VOLTA. PIANGO. 😍😍😍❤❤❤
Love these videos
.
was Sid in the Coal Porters back then?, looks like the Long Ryders to me, thanks for posting, bloody brilliant :-)
this is fucking great!
Bragg living out his Joe Strummer fantasy.
Can we have this on November's tour please!?

Choooooooon!!!
I'm no musician but I could tell Billy Bragg's style on a guitar immediately. A bit like Dave Greenfield on keyboards for the Stranglers.
Petr Nosalek there on the bus behind Michael Stipe :) ?
Natalie's dance was exactly what Elaine from Senfield was doing ( in her own head). 😂
One of my favourite songs ... although not a great cover love Natalie's breakfast Club dancing
Is that Wiggy ripping the John Perry solo? Sweet.
how can you mistake the guitar after two bars? what a great little surprise, I've never heard this song nor of this great occasion. what's the story?
😭😭😭

The Only Ones were an English band. Alan Mair is Scottish.

stipe and another girl... here is something wrong...
utter pants...gotta be the worst cover version ever....
This song gets progressively worse. Topped off by Natalie The Nun's dancing.
