I took my 3 month old GSP, Boone, to do some bird training 2 days ago. He did great the first four birds I placed, but the 5th Chukar slipped out of my hands before I could pull its flying feathers and Boone took off after it not looking where he was going and ran off a really steep 14 foot drop off, and broke his elbow. I wish I had collar condition trained him so I could have stopped him. He got surgery the next day and will have 6 weeks until we can continue hunting training. Thanks God he’s Alice, but I highly recommend collar training before introducing them to birds! It will keep your dog safe.

You could also just put them on a long leash.

@@alexanderhovis1149 I actually disagree with this one. My dog has been on a really long leash- if they are chasing something at full speed- you won't be able to keep up, they will reach the end of their line and the line will bring them to a complete halt which can be very painful and might even deter your dog from attempting to chase again.

So I have a question I have a four month old black lab that I’m trying to train for pheasant hunting I don’t have access to live birds or anything but she is collar conditioned we play fetch so she kinda gets the basics of retreaving bringing things back she is gun trained does great around shotguns and gunfire but my question is she likes to let me make the path I would like her to lead and flush out birds now I know she is only 4 months so I don’t expect a miracle we have gotten birds she likes them but likes it when I get them up lol any advice of that would be greatly appreciated thank you have a good day

We are working on #2 and #6. The majority of water we are around are running creeks and fresh cold freestone rivers here in central Colorado and she dosent really care for it. My 10 month old is very water shy, but our main problem is aggression right now. She has become very aggressive around other dogs so we have had to step back to early mannerisms. I'm assuming it's because she is coming close to her first heat and her age may be playing a factor as well. For eating on the road, I've been packing homemade plain beef jerky and homemade dog treats with extra protein along with her regular food.

As a GSD owner it may be because they have no hunting instinct and will do anything to protect you. Never leaving your side and get super nervous when something unexpected happens.
Plus they get hip dysplasia easily, my big boy is 9 and just started having bad hip issues, can’t walk every far anymore.
