Great video and information. We are a family of hunters out of Southeastern Arizona and have 2 GSPs who not only hunt but hike, camp and travel everywhere with us. They are an amazing breed but most of all they are the very best family pets EVER. I don't recommend the breed to anyone who does not have the time to exercise them EVERYDAY. They are high energy working animals who need not only lots of love and attention but constant exercise. I too can't imagine life without my GSPs!
I had a GSP for 16 years best hunting dog sweetest dog in the world would cry when in car if she see kids to get out and play. Never barked at anybody. God I miss her.
You should look into GSP rescue groups! A beautiful GSP was looking for a new owner last year, since his owner didn’t understand the energy and work drive of this breed
Another thing I would like to add is it's okay to own them and not hunt. Like you said, hunting is in their blood so it's important they get similar activities but simply a game of fetch along with sniffing games such as "sniff and seek" do the trick just fine. They are such an amazing breed!!!
They need more than fetch, if that's your idea of exercise get a lab, GSPs need way more than fetch or even walks around the neighborhood. It is true they don't need to hunt but they need long strenuous activities and lots of them
Yep, had GSPs for decades, never hunted. They're excellent trail buddies, jogging, buddies, walking buddies, fetch buddies, couch potato buddies... they're what you are... you just have to spend time with them, have patience, and love them.
We lost our beautiful old boy almost a year ago and your videos brought back lovely memories - the yodelling on car rides, the flying ears.the boinging about while running in long grass (like a Snoopy cartoon) , the total sookiness when they're at home, and the ENERGY, at least well into 'late middle age'. Here in Australia it's coming up to ANZAC Day, our national remembrance day for veterans etc. The first year in 11 years that Spike won't be 'singing along' with his muzzle raised in the air when he hears the Last Post. He was my 4th GSP, and probably my last as I don't think I can take on that energy level again (or lift a 40 kg dog, once my sons leave home!) But will always, always love them - a beautiful, elegant, goofy clown of a dog - so intelligent, and yet such a goofball. Thanks for the memories!
Greetings from the land Down Under. I agree with you on all three points. The humble GSP is the multi tool of the pooch world. Most hunting dogs can switch on and off given the occasion/environment that they find themselves in.They soon work out if they are on a social excursion or a hunt.Being able to read and understand your GSP is very important for success. Also, a well socialised and happy GSP is a joy to own and hunt with.GSP’s are the “thinking persons” go to hunting dog/companion!I love your dogs and your channel. Habitat 605 - Tammy Bashore thanks for your comment. I’ve had 30 years of owning, feeding, hunting with and making my family and I laugh at their crazy antics. It takes a GSP parent to understand another GSP parent.Long live the GSP.My twelve year old GSP Candy is waiting for a cuddle. 👍
I picked up a Black 'lab' from a rescue in the summer who turned out to be mostly German pointer. She is amazing, hugely athletic but happy to settle down after a walk on the sofa with us. She is the perfect companion for our mad Husky cross as they both have high energy but she actually helps keep him in check by rounding him up and stopping him running too far. She is the only dog I have seen who can keep pace with him. She has a little Ovcharka in her and so while she looks 100% pointer, she is on the large side. Currently about 28kg at 8 months. Fortunately, she is a softy!
Great stories about your daily life with two GSP dogs! I enjoy watching your experiances and dog adventures so much!! By my own I had a Deutsch-Drahthaar for fourteen years! And as i was a child my parents had several Deutsch-Kurzhaar (GSP). All dogs were great hunting and also great family dogs! For people who really care about them these dogs makes life richer. They are no "average dogs" for people who doesn't care about their special needs. You got a good hand for these dogs! Just got my gsp a week ago and he's the best puppy I've ever owned. Very clean too only 8 weeks old, and he only goes potty on the potty pads, and outside. Beyond smart also he's already getting basic commands down. Haven't ever owned such a clean and willing to learn/train puppy. Extremely glad I went with the gsp breed so far it's been amazing to say the least. I don't get why people say they aren't good family pets though? I have a toddler and this pup is super gentle when playing with him.
They are great family pets. They love children. A toddler wandered over to mine when the Latka was about 8 months old. Latka held very still so as not to bump or injure the little girl. Unfortunately, the toddler's mother turned around and saw her child petting a large dog and panicked. When the Mom ran over hysterically, the dog saw it as a threat and stepped between the child and the Mom. It took a little coaxing to reassure Latka that the lady could approach Latka's new friend and retrieve her child. The period between about 1 and 3 years old can be a bit difficult. Most people suggest keeping them mentally challenged and well-exercised. We taught our GSP that everything has a name, and would send tell her to "Go find your ball. Go find your TENNIS ball. Go find Mommy." Once they expect things to have names it is easy to add more things or people to their knowledge base. As for exercise, some professionals suggest two hours of vigorous exercise, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Some people suggest 35-40 minutes every hour, until the dog refuses to get up again. 😉 You can save that for the bad days.
We are on our third GSP. And two GWP brothers had to take both! We do not hunt. We just love the way they want to be with us all the time they are lovers and koo koo players.
I had Setters and Golden Retrievers and started late in life having hunting dogs. All of my dogs loved hunting, hiking and fishing, it was just getting out and running and playing, which they loved as much as I do. The more you spend with them, the more they are a part of the family and the more they learn about being a member of that pack. I am sure I would have loved German Shorthairs as well, I have hunted behind them, Brittany, labs and cocker spaniels. I had a Weiner mix dog as a kid and I would run him in a field chasing rabbits, as I rode my motorcycle, he loved it and I love that time I had with him.
Lol found this video after my first year of getting one and it was a life lessons I never saw coming... I love them and I do think they are such spiritual dogs on some way. I’m only in my first year soo I can only imagine how far I have to go. They definitely bring people into ur life.
Great video. I have a GSP dog, lovely, loyalty, precious. If you need personnel space this dog not for you. He sleeps with us in our bed, he always wants to be with us, around us. Many people thinking that, GSP just for hunting, wrong!!! Great family pet, very smart, easy train.
Hi tammy from balmoral in Scotland. I have a GSP they are the best . A true all rounder. Sofas beware ... thank you for the videos. Keep them coming !!
Tammy, Amazing videos! And yes, GSPs do it all!!! From being a great running partner, to “helping” in the yard 😂 to turning into a couch potato at night ❤️❤️❤️
Yes, helping in the yard. One of our boys would carry firewood when we unloaded it from the truck. He never did learn stacking but he would take it to the area where we did stack it. He loved doing it and we let him, they can be OCD at times do he tired himself out.
Our GSP loves dockdogs, sled pulling, lure, rat hunting, frisbee, swimming, and protecting my daughter who is his dockdogs handler. It's the most versatile dog on Earth! I could teach him anything in a matter of days.
Just adopted a GSP, 1.5 Yrs. And he's awesome, yet a bit hard headed! Lol Since I now have an awesome pup once again... Now to find a beautiful little lady such as yourself! 😍
I have a chocolate lab/gsp mix. He's still only 10 months old, we are still working on training him. We don't hunt. But he is one of the best dogs I have ever owned. Loves people, loves to run, loves other dogs, loves children. He is basically a gsp with lab eyes and a lab stomach 😂. But he is so smart and he catches on quick. I wouldn't trade him for anything.
They are fantastic family dogs. They need exercise, but don't we all? As long as they get exercise, they are perfectly happy lounging around the house. They are super smart and easily trained. I've had two....and they know when there is a blanket on the couch, they can come up and snuggle, if there is no blanket, they do not...I've never found them on the couch when I come home..they know and respect the rules of the house. My Cooper LOVEs to snuggle and when he can't come up on the couch, he will make sure to have a paw touching us... or he will lean into us. Show them love and positive reinforcement and they will respect your rules and be your buddy for life. An exceptional breed...
I've owned 3 shorthairs, wouldn't change the breed but I've never had one that wouldn't get under the covers or nap when I do. If I'm headed to the bed, they are 3' behind me, even with my ex they'd follow her up as well. Shorthairs can sure turn it on or off in a heartbeat, just have to be consistent with them as they are a very very intelligent and it sinks in.
I have never gone hunting with my GSPs but every time I let them lose (which was at every possible opportunity) I got the feeling that they were taking me hunting. A local Gun Club had a Pheasant breeding pen hidden away in a forest, that the GSPs would always head straight to. They would sneak up on the pen even if we hadn't seen any Pheasants in months.
I have a GSP and he is very well trained he didn’t really need potty mats when he was little and he can hold It in for a long time when he doesn’t wanna go outside
Mine didn't hunt, except on his own, he was my best pal. He was 13 when I had to put him to rest a year ago, and I miss him terribly still. He went everywhere with me. He loved all people, especially little kids. His prey drive was incredibly high and no small animal was safe. He was a bestest boy.
I have owned two GSP's. My current GSP Nelly, is by far the best dog I have ever owned. I can whisper to her and she understands everything that is said. She is a cuddlebug, lives on a farm with free reign, stays close to my side. Loves people, oh & the Juicy Squirrels are her favorite.
At one time I had 6, but now my "kids" are 10, 11, 11 and 11. They've finally grown up, but still have several runs a day on our 5 acres sniffing out where all the wildlife have played overnight. Except when it is in the upper 90s.....I'll let them out the back door and by the time I can make it to the living room they are at the front door wanting to come in.....
Our very tall GSP came walking past my girlfriend’s 2 & 3 year olds at his usual fast gate and immediately slowed down to a soft walk when passing the 3 tikes without being asked to do so, as if it was instinctual. What a relief!
I can't believe some people think GSP's (great silly puppies) should only hunt and then if they are not hunting not do any other activities. That sounds cruel given their energy levels. I have recently acquired one, a black roan, who is around 5 months now and there is no way my yard would be anything but a complete mess if I didn't exercise her off leash at least an hour a day.
Great silly puppies! That's the perfect name for them, wish I'd thought of it.My Spike did all 3 levels of obedience training in puppyhood, and was very good at learning it all, except, as one trainer said, there's no command for 'Spike, don't be a wally ...' lolol
Give the exercices the GSP need. Hiking mountain biking or hunting and it's be the better dog in the world. For me, my GSP hunt all the time and this is why I love her. Her favorites hunting games : woodcock
Ive owened alot of different breeds collies, retrievers Afghan hounds, rodasian ridge backs , pits , but my GSP is such an amazing breed , so intelligent, almost human like
countryboy12 GSP we have used dog shoes from Ruffwear before. They will run/walk funny in them for about 10 minutes and then they get used to them and do fine. It protects their pads really well from being cut up or destroyed by salt on concrete as well.
The kurzhaar is an all round hunting dog, from pointing woodcock partridge quail to rabbit hare deer boar and offcourse retrieving duck goose woodpigeon dove thrush... Swiss knife...
@@Tammy_Bashore My kurzhaar's are from the "Yard vom hege haus" bloodline... Great dogs from a great field and show champion that took every championship there is in Europe.
LOL Ours thought she was a lap dog and would happily curl up on your lap and go to sleep if you left her. She was also the best mouser you ever saw. If our cat caught a mouse she would play with it but Cocoa would just kill them and walk away. Whats funny is she didn't have a hard mouth. Sometimes our neighbors chickens would get out and she would catch them and bring them to us but never hurt them. On drop it she would let it out to shake off it's feathers and run home. But she really thought her mission in life was to protect my handicapped wife. She would always stay between my wife and anyone she was unsure of. If she thought they were too close it was the low menacing grow. We had looters in our area going around casing homes after a hurricane, Our dog almost never barked so unless you saw her people didn't know we had a dog. My wife unlatched the door to a knock and the person slammed the door in only to find a 55 lb dog going for his face. My wife said what saved him was Cocoa growled before lunging but if there was a record for the backward broad jump he beat it. Or local police said that we wouldn't have to worry about him coming back because he would never want to find that dog in the dark. We lost her the day after New Years but she had a good life of almost 15 years. It's still too soon to think about another one.
@@Tammy_Bashore Thanks....really appreciate your prayers. Been fighting for about 5 years....keeps coming back (ALL); getting ready to get hammered again (chemo and radiation). We're broken hearted. Love your GSPs.
Get Both! The GSP and Griffin both share similar development so work well together. Two will help take the homework down. One will test your endurance. These are the two best pooch-Amatics out there!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for all your video's Tammy xo We live on a farm and my husband and kids love to hunt so it's great to know they are happy hiking and hunting! Totally unrelated....... I love you hat ;) where did you get it?
I really want a gsp but I work a full time job. I got my first gsp when I was 12 and I trained him to go off leash in a field and on our lawn in just 3 weeks at the age of 15 weeks. I work a full time job and I am going to give him 1 hour of field exercise in the morning and 1-2 hours when I come home. I will also be paying a neighbourhood kid to walk my dog around the block and play with him in my backyard for a bit. Do you think my dog will be ok.
Get yourself a large kennel. Indoor/outdoor is best. Or in garage or shaded area depending on weather. Just make sure there space is large enough for them to stretch their legs and you’ll be fine with what you are describing. Good luck!
It is hard to put in word what is to own one of these miracle canines - we try to describe it in so many ways; pros and cons. The thing is that the bond you'll have with them will prevent you to have any other breed after this. They behave like super-humans, understand, listen, observe your moods, body language, they notice the smallest changes in you and respond to it. Their attention to their human is unimaginable. If God has a dog up in the haven - it is certainly the GSP.
I bred them owned them for more than 30 years. They are without a doubt the BEST dogs there are. I even trained mine to herd my goats. They are the most flexible and intelligent dogs I have ever owned. Loyal to their families and have more 'heart' than any other breed. When my last girl died at 14, I just couldn't buy another. I now have sister Black and Tans 100#, I love them but I will never ever love any dog as much as my GSPs they are something MORE. Guess you need to own and love one (or more) to understand.
Loved your video. We have a 50lb 1 yr old GSP & Cattle dog mix from a rescue, he is smart, kind & very vocal at 5:45 every morning he howls to wake us up.
Yes - I think crates are important spaces. it is there safe place to retreat to that no one else gets in. They are great places to put them when you need to leave the house and they can't be trusted yet to get out. Lots of reasons to have a crate!
I follow GSP pages on Facebook, and one of the concepts I would like for you to address is many people love GSP puppies and they take them home and they try to treat him like a poodle or an indoor dog and they end up having a frustrated animal because you can’t do that with this breed, would you please discuss that thank you
I have many videos that address that, but I guess not in those words exactly. I could definitely try! But I dont know enough about other breeds to know what is normal for DOGS in general, or just GSPs.
Hi Tammy it sounds like you got trolled by some haters...sorry if that’s true. I absolutely love my GSP but to be honest my wife wanted to give her away the first month we had her. Our GSP sleeps with us now lol...
Douglas. My GSP has been crate trained at home and still prefers her crate to sleep in. I had a custom built crate made for my car which has been fully crash tested and she loves it in there and is very safe. Not to mention that in the UK it's illegal to have an unsecured dog in your car.
Excellent points...no pun intended! I agree with you in that dogs in general - not just GSPs - are capable of SO much more than 2 diverse relationships. I have no doubt that their relationship with you children is again diverse from yours and your husband. I am also happy for your dogs that your husband hunts your "hunting breed". There are SO many other breeds out there for non-hunters. The onus remains with the breeders to place working dogs in working homes but as it has always been in our history, "cash is king". I am not a breeder but if I was, I would not sell my bird dogs to non-hunting homes...period. Before long, "they" will beggar them up too.... or should I say, again.
where do these myths come from? I was told they were bred to hunt AND come home and be a family dog. I got a GSP because I saw the hunters at my archery club with them and saw what how great they were with their children,
These particular myths came from comments that I kept getting and finally decided to address them :) GSPs are the most versatile dog, I absolutely love them!
LOL My kids can't walk them now that they are older. Puppies they can walk fine - but our older GSPs are too strong, so walking them is extremely difficult, even for me. HOWEVER, if you are diligent, I have seen many people train their GSPs to walk nicely on a leash. Thats just not us :)
My initial response is no to both, but honestly, every single dog personality is different. MOST GSPs that I know that coexist with cats, do so in an ok manner. As far as guard dogs go, mine will bark at any noise or person that comes near the home (mailman, etc), but they wouldn't ever attack IMO. Mine might lick you to death, but thats about it. But I have known 1-2 GSPs that have more aggressive tendencies, so like I said, it really depends on the temperament of your GSP (or any dog breed for that matter).
I agree with Tammy, each dog is different - but - I have owned 4, and always had cats too. In every case the cats bossed the GSPs around to a ridiculous extent. Even to the point of pathetic whines from the 30 kg dog because the 3 kg cat was sitting in front of the heater and it didn't dare to go near ... What I would say is that the cats were usually in the house before the pup arrived. And that they were all Siamese, which have a very strong personality and quite fearless. What worked when we introduced a kitten when our GSP was about 3: we introduced them very gradually, the kitten in his enclosed crate, a few minutes at a time, then supervised short visits, etc, till we felt sure they were OK. And even then, never left alone together if we were out. The way it worked was the kitten soon showed the large dog that the kitten was very scary and in charge. A GSP can literally pick up an egg in its mouth without cracking it, but they do also have very strong jaws. I doubt they would deliberately harm a cat from their own household, but they might easily do it 'playing'. All this of course depends on the GSP being well trained and know absolutely that he or she is at the bottom of the pack, with the human firmly dominant at the top. Mine once accidentally snarled and snapped at one of my teenage sons (it got a fright when he touched it, mistaking him for another dog) Spike the GSP was mortified and shamed beyond belief, but I insisted that my son take a good hour to walk him around, put him through all his commands, roll over, etc etc, to make sure he absolutely accepted he must NEVER AGAIN threaten a family member. Poor old Spike, he slunk around my son for days after! SO embarrassed. But necessary
Husband lucky. Our dog mommy fell in love with him as a puppy. No you are not taking him hunting. He might get hurt or lost. No way. So wintertime he hunt up heater ducts & lay on them. He permently ground to our yard only. But good watch dog. Inside he still can smell strangers & wild animals walking in our huge yard from inside the house. Bark Time. Can smell myself coming in my Tk. Start jumping up & down in excitement. Treat Time play time.
Very true indeed.. i can sign on all you said , I have my GSP Nr2 now, we call them short haired vorsteh here in Norway :) . Both my Gsp`s got that swich ,hunt modus on when we hunt, very smart dogs and in the top 10 smart dogs according to veterinarians. well both mine has been so easy to train as the hunting mode is already there , just a few tweeks . and one switch for sofa cuddle as well. sleeps with me all night long . anyone who say they shall be kept at a kennel and only hunt don`t know the GSP for sure and i feel sorry for those dogs .. all GSP i know are kind and loves children but in the open yard outside be careful as they can speed run the kids down . Here is my Ailo th-cam.com/video/okKgxbGEwaQ/w-d-xo.html
GSPS aren't good family dogs? Seriously, who said that?? They are the best family dogs!! The are gentle & loyal & cuddly & are great around kids!! And me 😁😁 I love this breed!
3 facts about gsp's. They lick any paint they find tastey and many metals, unfixed males pee on anything. And nothing in your house is sacred to them if you can't stay on top of them for at least 3 years of training. But they are a great versatile hunting dog. Also they are great farm dogs for killing rats, mice and even woodchucks. But for heavens sake if you have porcupines around don't leave them out alone. They never learn. I have removed quills too many times to count. Oh and the same for skunks.....

Lol found this video after my first year of getting one and it was a life lessons I never saw coming... I love them and I do think they are such spiritual dogs on some way. I’m only in my first year soo I can only imagine how far I have to go. They definitely bring people into ur life.
Haha - its a crazy wild ride!!! If you can survive the first year, then you should be good for many more crazy years!
Mine has a new found taste for shoe when I’m gone for too long.. 🤣😒😒🤣
#1 same here. My husband is the hunter and with me, our GSP acts differently, although he is just 8 month old.
Yes! They act so different between the 2 of us. Its so interesting!
Great video. I have a GSP dog, lovely, loyalty, precious. If you need personnel space this dog not for you. He sleeps with us in our bed, he always wants to be with us, around us.
Many people thinking that, GSP just for hunting, wrong!!! Great family pet, very smart, easy train.
haha yep! All true!
Great video. Every gsp that I have ever met has been super friendly and great hunting dogs !!
I love that! Thanks for watching!
Hi tammy from balmoral in Scotland. I have a GSP they are the best . A true all rounder. Sofas beware ... thank you for the videos. Keep them coming !!
Neil Crowther thanks for watching!
Tammy,
Amazing videos! And yes, GSPs do it all!!! From being a great running partner, to “helping” in the yard 😂 to turning into a couch potato at night ❤️❤️❤️
Krissy haha “helping” 😂
Yes, they're very adaptable and seem to adjust to the circumstances. Also, they like to re-landscape the yard.
Yes! They are known to be the best allrounder!!
Yes, helping in the yard. One of our boys would carry firewood when we unloaded it from the truck. He never did learn stacking but he would take it to the area where we did stack it. He loved doing it and we let him, they can be OCD at times do he tired himself out.
Forgot to add, he would also dig on command, and do his toileting on command also. They are just plain wonderful.
Our GSP loves dockdogs, sled pulling, lure, rat hunting, frisbee, swimming, and protecting my daughter who is his dockdogs handler. It's the most versatile dog on Earth! I could teach him anything in a matter of days.
Sounds like you have an incredible dog!!
Just adopted a GSP, 1.5 Yrs. And he's awesome, yet a bit hard headed! Lol Since I now have an awesome pup once again... Now to find a beautiful little lady such as yourself! 😍
Hmmmm, that might be easier than living with a GSP ;)
@@Tammy_Bashore lol we'll find out!
Danie that mix sounds so fun!
I have 2 GSP and looking for another one, I have had several other breeds of hunting dogs and I love this one the most.
yes, they are awesome!
Andy Wenner yes! I love this.
Also great barn dogs! They keep up on the trails with the horses 😁😁
Krissy I’ve never heard that! How cool!
Yes
Although he got scared of the goat 😂
I've owned 3 shorthairs, wouldn't change the breed but I've never had one that wouldn't get under the covers or nap when I do. If I'm headed to the bed, they are 3' behind me, even with my ex they'd follow her up as well. Shorthairs can sure turn it on or off in a heartbeat, just have to be consistent with them as they are a very very intelligent and it sinks in.
They definitely don’t hesitate when it comes to a good nap with their owner. :)
Awww they just know!!
I have a GSP and he is very well trained he didn’t really need potty mats when he was little and he can hold
It in for a long time when he doesn’t wanna go outside
iiDoggosii Gacha that’s great! Mine were similar to that which was so nice and easy!
All 4 of mine too. They are great that way.
I can't imagine the day when I dont have both boys!
I have a gsp!! I don’t hunt but he’s such a great dog ❤
Thats awesome! You definitely don't need to be a hunter to love a GSP! :)
I have owned two GSP's. My current GSP Nelly, is by far the best dog I have ever owned. I can whisper to her and she understands everything that is said. She is a cuddlebug, lives on a farm with free reign, stays close to my side. Loves people, oh & the Juicy Squirrels are her favorite.
yes! I swear mine also understand me!
Yup! That’s the same with my GSP!
GSPs are so awesome!
GSPs can do it all.....I have four right now. I've done conformation, hunting, agility, obedience and even "dancing with your dog".
Oh my goodness - 4 GSPs!!!!??? That makes me tired just thinking about it!
Barbara Tizio they’re so smart!
GSPs are amazing family dogs
Beautiful dogs and you
I can't believe some people think GSP's (great silly puppies) should only hunt and then if they are not hunting not do any other activities. That sounds cruel given their energy levels. I have recently acquired one, a black roan, who is around 5 months now and there is no way my yard would be anything but a complete mess if I didn't exercise her off leash at least an hour a day.
Completely agree. I hope my next one is all black too! They are so cool looking!
You are so right! Love it!
Well said great video 👍 we own 3 GSPs
Oh geez! I'm not sure I could handle 3...
#goals 😍
Ive owened alot of different breeds collies, retrievers Afghan hounds, rodasian ridge backs , pits , but my GSP is such an amazing breed , so intelligent, almost human like
They truly are!
My GPS keeps cutting up his paws in the winter tried everything and nothing seems to work. What do you guys use?
countryboy12 GSP we have used dog shoes from Ruffwear before. They will run/walk funny in them for about 10 minutes and then they get used to them and do fine. It protects their pads really well from being cut up or destroyed by salt on concrete as well.
Got one sleeping right beside me at the moment and he couldn’t be any sweeter
awww sleeping GSPs are good GSPs! :)
Max is first of all my best buddy, then he’s my great bird dog
Sounds like you get what’s most important! 😃
Best dogs in the whole world!!! ♥️♥️♥️!!!
Totally agree! :)
Beautiful dogs and so are you ...
THanks!
Love the video Tammy!! 🥰👏🏻
Mary Johnson thanks Mary!!! ❤️
The kurzhaar is an all round hunting dog, from pointing woodcock partridge quail to rabbit hare deer boar and offcourse retrieving duck goose woodpigeon dove thrush... Swiss knife...
I've never heard of that breed! I'll have to look it up! Thanks for watching!
@@Tammy_Bashore facepalm... The kurzhaar is the German shorthaired pointer...
Oh! I’m sorry. I’ve didn’t realize that.
@@Tammy_Bashore kurzhaar means short-hair... Also gwp is the drahthaar that means wire-haired... Also brittany is the epagneul bretton...
@@Tammy_Bashore My kurzhaar's are from the "Yard vom hege haus" bloodline... Great dogs from a great field and show champion that took every championship there is in Europe.
Love GSP's. The only kind of dog we will have
agreed!
She sounds amazing!
It’s Marley! I miss my Marley so bad! Powered by an atomic reactor! Brain by a cray supercomputer! One of the best breeds ever!
Haha for sure!
I have a grandson fighting cancer, so I'm familiar with Love My Melon
So sorry to hear!! Prayers for him and his family. I can’t imagine!
@@Tammy_Bashore Thanks....really appreciate your prayers. Been fighting for about 5 years....keeps coming back (ALL); getting ready to get hammered again (chemo and radiation). We're broken hearted. Love your GSPs.
I love ❤️ German shorthaired pointer it's the best breed of dogs. Family friendly
We agree! 😉
I can't decide between a GSP , Vizsla, Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, Australian Shepherd, Whippet, and Brittany.
Quite a dilemma! I'd go with GSP. But my husband wants a wirehair next. So we'll see!
Get Both! The GSP and Griffin both share similar development so work well together. Two will help take the homework down. One will test your endurance. These are the two best pooch-Amatics out there!!!!!!!!!
Just like one of the kids but listen better. Such an awesome breed only breed I'll ever own.
Thanks for all your video's Tammy xo We live on a farm and my husband and kids love to hunt so it's great to know they are happy hiking and hunting! Totally unrelated....... I love you hat ;) where did you get it?
Eniid Goodman awww thank you! My hat is from Love Your Melon. And they are my FAV!!
Can I ask if a gsp if taken to a house with cats and at 8 weeks u introduce them safely with it be k to have then freely together
I know alot of people that successfully have cats and GSPs together. I do not have cats, so I'm not 100% sure how they introduced them.
Great video.
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful dogs.
Aimal Khan thank you!!
Good luck!
@@Tammy_Bashore Thanks so much for the advice, I’m a huge fan
Good dog
It is hard to put in word what is to own one of these miracle canines - we try to describe it in so many ways; pros and cons. The thing is that the bond you'll have with them will prevent you to have any other breed after this. They behave like super-humans, understand, listen, observe your moods, body language, they notice the smallest changes in you and respond to it. Their attention to their human is unimaginable. If God has a dog up in the haven - it is certainly the GSP.
Such a good way to put it!
@@Tammy_Bashore 😊
I bred them owned them for more than 30 years. They are without a doubt the BEST dogs there are. I even trained mine to herd my goats. They are the most flexible and intelligent dogs I have ever owned. Loyal to their families and have more 'heart' than any other breed. When my last girl died at 14, I just couldn't buy another. I now have sister Black and Tans 100#, I love them but I will never ever love any dog as much as my GSPs they are something MORE. Guess you need to own and love one (or more) to understand.
Oh wow! You sound like an awesome trainer! They really are so versatile!
Loved your video. We have a 50lb 1 yr old GSP & Cattle dog mix from a rescue, he is smart, kind & very vocal at 5:45 every morning he howls to wake us up.
Are GSP’s affectionate and like to cuddle, Can they relax at home if they are exercised.
OH YES - they are the best cuddles you'll ever know!
@@Tammy_Bashore thank you.
Do GSPs absolutely need a crate? I will pick mine up in a few weeks and I am not sure what to do! Help!
Yes - I think crates are important spaces. it is there safe place to retreat to that no one else gets in. They are great places to put them when you need to leave the house and they can't be trusted yet to get out. Lots of reasons to have a crate!
Pretty good watch dogs too
Sure are!
GSP ARE VERY SMART. THEY KNOW WHEN ITS TIME TO WORK!!
Hi, where did you get that water container from?
I've seen them at my Bass Pro.
It’s from Ruff Land Kennels! And it’s awesome!!
rufflandkennels.com/product/water-dish/
How are they on Frisbee's?
Good question! Their teeth with mar the frisbee but overall pretty good!
Our GSP sleeps with us now lol...
haha - some people just say ridiculous things. Wanted to make sure people didn't read it and believe it!
Are they good being on a leash in the mountains. I live in Montana. Way to many bears
If you train them to be. I never did train mine well for a leash. We usually go off leash.
I take my gsp to a forest preserve every morning. We walk 7 miles and she loves to track deer, squirrels and rabbits. She doesn’t care for birds.
Lucky puppy dog!
My last one was 17 years old and now I have a 5 mouths old
Wow! I hope mine live that long!
Do you recommend crate training a gsp for car trips? I enjoy my dog’s company while driving. Wondering how you felt about that.
Douglas. My GSP has been crate trained at home and still prefers her crate to sleep in. I had a custom built crate made for my car which has been fully crash tested and she loves it in there and is very safe. Not to mention that in the UK it's illegal to have an unsecured dog in your car.
I do use travel crates for car travel. Its just much safer for the dogs should you get into a car accident. A good travel crate can save a dogs life.
I like your portable dog water. I currently carry gallon bottles of water around. Where did you get it please?
Pam Iles it’s called the Water Hole from Ruff Land Kennels! You can look them up online. I love it!
Before long, "they" will beggar them up too.... or should I say, again.
ha! Good pun:)
where do these myths come from? I was told they were bred to hunt AND come home and be a family dog. I got a GSP because I saw the hunters at my archery club with them and saw what how great they were with their children,
These particular myths came from comments that I kept getting and finally decided to address them :) GSPs are the most versatile dog, I absolutely love them!
How old are your dogs ?
Zac Wayman 2 and 5
Do they spill a lot of saliva indoors? Salivate lots? Thxs
Casa Tequila SF nope! Mine only drool when I have food they want. But that’s rare!! One of my fav things about this breed.
Habitat 605 - Tammy Bashore Thank you Tammy! Great to know
Do they shed at lot I am thinking of getting one.
yep!
Habitat 605 - Tammy Bashore like a Golden retriever and can you see it on the furniture and floor and does it get in your mouth when you eat
Gisele&Loren Juricic I don’t think it’s quite that bad. But I vacuum every 3 days.
Habitat 605 - Tammy Bashore thank you so much it is so help full
I have 1 and she sheds very little.
Nice
Nice video, I wish you continued success. I want to buy a special puppy from you🌷
I dare some idiot to tell me what my dogs are or arent. If they have manners and arent a pia, they are your dogs to raise as you choose.
Bo Bauer amen to that! 🙌🏼
Can my 11-year-old walk one or a passing squirrel would get the kid drags al over like a mop?
LOL My kids can't walk them now that they are older. Puppies they can walk fine - but our older GSPs are too strong, so walking them is extremely difficult, even for me. HOWEVER, if you are diligent, I have seen many people train their GSPs to walk nicely on a leash. Thats just not us :)
Doing gsp research, we got a rescue 12 month old gsp/beagle gal and she's completely untrained and smart as a whip. She's currently training us 😜
interesting mix!
Are gsp good with other animals cats other nonhunting dogs
Jim Hoffend I’ve seen many people have both with success but I can’t speak to it because I don’t have other animals. Sorry!
Are you Kristen Wiig? You've got serious Kristen Wiig energy going on here.
So funny! I've never hear that before but I'll take it!
I love my GSP- he is like a K9 Usain Bolt!! Lol..He loves to chase deer...His name is Champ
Love that name!
I’m in Georgia with a 4 month old GSP I can’t keep do you know someone ?
Oh no! Thats so sad. I'm sorry to hear that. You could check with any hunting lodges, or a local GSP rescue.
My girl Emmylou will hunt all day and snuggle all evening. 😁
Sounds perfect to me!
How do you keep fleas off your dog and out of your house?
aaron101167 hi! We’ve never had an issue with our dogs. But there are treatments you could apply if needed. We’ve just never had a need.
Will they kill pet cats? and are they good guard dogs?
My initial response is no to both, but honestly, every single dog personality is different. MOST GSPs that I know that coexist with cats, do so in an ok manner. As far as guard dogs go, mine will bark at any noise or person that comes near the home (mailman, etc), but they wouldn't ever attack IMO. Mine might lick you to death, but thats about it. But I have known 1-2 GSPs that have more aggressive tendencies, so like I said, it really depends on the temperament of your GSP (or any dog breed for that matter).
@@Tammy_Bashore Thank you :) An alarm dog is good enough for me
I agree with Tammy, each dog is different - but - I have owned 4, and always had cats too.
Yes! Complete agree with you. And LOVE your country! Norway is gorgeous!
GSPS aren't good family dogs? Seriously, who said that?? They are the best family dogs!! The are gentle & loyal & cuddly & are great around kids!! And me 😁😁 I love this breed!
You'd be amazed what people say to me! :)
I bet big money if you asked the dog if they can do other thing and still be good hunters. They would say I am a birddog MF.
I laughed so hard at this. thanks for that! And its so true.
Is that true about unfixed males!? Mine pee on EVERYTHING and they are not neutered. I'd give anything to make it stop!
@@Tammy_Bashore too late. You got to cut them young. Cutting them proud does nothing for that.
Is that a Love My Melon Cap?
