Things to See and Do in SALEM MASSACHUSETTS

- Here are some cool things to see and do in Salem, Massachusetts. Salem is a city located northeast of Boston and is well known for the Salem Witch Trials which took place back in the late 17th Century. Salem is home to many sights dedicated to not only the Salem Witch Trial (such as the Salem Witch Trial Memorial) but many witch houses and museums. In addition, Salem also has highly-acclaimed museums such as the Peabody Essex Museum, the Salem Maritime National Historic Site, and the House of the Seven Gables which has the birthplace of famous American author Nathaniel Hawthorne. Salem has some great places for food such as the Sea Level Oyster Bar and Spitfire Tacos. Last but not least, Salem also has great parks from Salem Common to Winter Island.

I have been fascinated by the Salem witchcraft hysteria since I read Marion L. Starkey’s excellent book The Devil in Massachusetts as a youngster. I am still very interested in that history, but I think I would be slightly turned off by the kitschy touristy witch stuff that you rightly warn about.
Love all the Hawthorne content! I am a big fan of his. The House of the Seven Gables is a terrific novel. I am re-reading his short stories currently.
As you can tell, I especially like the literary connections of any town or area.
If you didn’t get to New Bedford on this trip to Massachusetts, you should next time, because the connections to whaling and to Herman Melville’s Moby Dick are amazing. Great whaling museum and seaman’s chapel, great waterfront.
Very nice! I remember reading The Crucible back in high school which gave me exposure to the Salem Witch Trials. I am quite impressed with all the dedications to Hawthorne in Salem from the statue to the nice upkeep of his birthplace. I didn't get a chance to check out New Bedford, but I'll have to go the next time I'm back in the area. Thanks for watching!

I saw a memorial or something for Nathaniel Hawthorne. Was that his gravesite maybe? He is one of my great great great uncles.
That's really cool! I don't recall that being his gravesite location, but it always could be possible.
It seems that many states have a Salem, but Massachusetts has the most famous one.
That's pretty much true with Salem, Oregon likely being 2nd place due to it being the state capital of Oregon.
@Scottman895 Travel yes, that is about the only other well-known Salem. Ontario does have a village called Salem in Wellington County too.
@@robertsitch1415 Very nice! I haven't heard of that Salem, but it might be a community that is not really known outside of Ontario.
