To people who complain that Scotty gets most of his money now from YT and not from fixing cars, I think this video shows how much effort it takes to make these videos.
Good for the non morons for succeeding on keeping the nails clean for 😊their dates lol
Normalize making money from yt.
Scotty fixes our need for car knowledge.
I've read Scotty has made more than 20 million dollars making these videos. If I were Scotty, I'd laugh all the way to the bank over others complaints.
But cars was obviously his hobby and what he chose to make a living on. So it’s pretty cool he is a millionaire and still works on cars for content.
Scotty is one of the very few people that I am ok with calling me stupid.
He does that a lot..lol...🤪🤪🤪
Agreed. Glad to be better educated
That's stupid 😮
You’re stupid. It’s okay, my real name is Scotty. 😂😂
To bad Scotty was upset with the college where he wanted to get his Phd., but hey ,he's got his masters ya know..
The corn grown to make ethanol uses fertilizer made from oil. So much for ethanol being green.
Just like EV cars, not as green as they claim they are!!
There are no solutions, only compromises.
Scotty is the best at explaining car mechanics in layman’s terms that non-mechanically inclined individuals like me 😊 can understand!
I wish they’d bring back the original VW bug. Just a car to get around and no expensive electronics or a check engine light that goes on and never goes off! 😂
Called “The people’s car” for a reason.
And no coolant either 😳👍
I put 93 in my 2019 Mustang ecoboost performance pack. I notice the difference in gas mileage and power. Manual says you can use 87, but indicates the use of 93 for increased performance. Since there is a turbo this is a no brainer.
Yea, scotty has said that too, that it just loses a little hp on regular, my ex wife has a 14 escape titanium with the 2.0 ecoboost, she uses regular, it runs good ,and for a heavy small suv, is still pretty quick, but shes not hard on it
93 can cost over 25% more than 87. I'm pretty sure you're not getting 25% more gas mileage or power from it!
Great informational video. I have worked on cars my whole life, and I am still learning.
Myth 21: Beauty covers are required for the engine to run properly.
When you go to get your oil changed and coolants and lubricants topped off, be aware that the windshield wiper fluid they top off with may be a warm weather type fluid (cheaper) and if it is not used up by the winter months it can freeze and damage your windshield wiper fluid spray system. On top of that, it will render your windshield fluid sprayer inoperable while it is frozen, even if it doesn't damage it. It can also blow the fuse connected to the sprayer pump when you try to operate the pump with frozen liquid in it. In addition, it can freeze and crack the plastic windshield fluid reservoir.
Another reason people should learn to work on their own cars...
One of the things I do is custom mix my washer fluid, to minimize the amount of winter product (with methanol in it, a poison) I use. When I go for an oil change, I tell them not to fill it, I use a custom blend. The math is from your first year of Algebra, but unfortunately, most people convinced themselves that they would never use it in real life...
Put in your own All Season windshield washer fluid !
1:53 I'm often surprised at how clever and advanced some people were in the past.
How did I spend 20 years in education and leave knowing so little?
I know what you mean.
Good morning Scotty
Fabulous video. I wish I'd had something like this to show my students (long retired) I taught for 35 years and worked as a mechanic for 20 before that. This is fabulous information, and very helpful, in my quest to get my wife to use regular octane fuel in our new vehicle (old car used premium). I've try to explain octane to people but they don't listen, but everybody listens to you Scotty! Very entertaining as always,
Cheers 🍻
i love this educational videos. do more! please Scotty!
it takes more land and energy to make ethanol then gasoline .
But gasoline is nonrenewable. Makes sense to plan for the long term
@@jawndice933 you can make gasoline out of used plastic but they wont.
One mechanic asked me to only use higher octane gasoline on my Toyota Venza, I remembered what Scotty said and didn’t do it.
I had the hardest time following this without being able to see Scotty’s arms flailing away 🎉
Even manuals can be a little sketchy. My 2003 Acura TL's manual stated "Your Acura is designed to operate on premium unleaded gasoline with a pump octane number of 91 or higher". For the 11 years I had that car, I never put anything other than 89 octane. I never had any fuel-related issues with that car.
That cooling system for EV’s is scary to think if they start leaking and the expense to repair them after the warranty is off at the recommended 100K+ miles service!
Thank you Scotty. Once again, your wisdom outshines most others
My last beater was great at overheating. The trick about cranking up your heater actually works great to dump the heat when you're in a bind. Consider old falling apart car though. One time when I tried to use that trick during the summer the plastic housing around the heater core cracked and all my coolant dumped in around my feet. Yea I pulled over and got it towed home and finally had the water pump replaced.
It is a great trick when you're in a bind but I learned relying on it will break other stuff haha. It was a beater car though. Hated spending money on it.
Reminds me of my first car before I knew anything about working on them. Worked at a beach for a summer but lived across the bridge into it. Car would overheat when sitting so cranking the heat was often necessary when stuck in bridge traffic. It was such a common occurrence that I got some battery powered fans for myself and fellow occupants to use when the heat came on in 100° weather.
I put super unleaded in my 2001 golf S because it pinks like a ****** when manoeuvring at low revs. This is apparently the recommended route, and without a doubt makes it a little more zippy, it does seem to go further to the tank too, but that’s a byproduct to me.
93 gas comes from cleaner company tanks.
The 87 gas tanks are not that well kept.
I got this info from my step Dad who worked in these companies .
Gas and antifreeze. Uhm, that’s two myths.
Love these information videos.
Good info 👍
AMAZING! Wow, this has so much information
Scotty you are awesome. Much respect.
So much information for the basic maintenance of your car. Governments should make this mandatory watching for new drivers.
Awesome video Scotty!
Oh Scotty, you've done it again. Thanks for another great video!
Thank you Sir. Nicely explained.
Awesome video Scotty !!! I love these type of knowledgeable videos ❤ Gets me ver excited 😊 👍🏼
I hate the "may contain 10% Ethanol" stickers. Ethanol is bad for things like chainsaws, some OHV's etc and can't kill the insides over time.
You should always have a known option for no ethanol.
😲Good video... 👍😁 Thank you for the knowledge... Scotty..
we do not have octane 99, this should be 98. so we have 95 and 98
If a fuel is 98 RON then it will be 93 PON -> 93 PUMP
If a fuel is 95 RON and 87 MON then it will be 91 PON -> 91 PUMP
Thanks Scotty 👍 we love your TH-cam automotive channel ❤️
What no one tells you about E85 ethanol? The brand new Honda Ruckus scooter I just purchased for $3500 won't run, I had to pull the entire fuel system apart, and the pilot jet that was clogged needed to be cleared, that was an all day job, not something you want to be doing on a brand new scooter, simply because the fuel had broken down and separated in the cold weather we were having, and it clogged the idle jet. Lesson learned? Don't use E 85 on scooters, motorbikes, or high-performance vehicles, because our local Subaru dealer chewed out our local gas station owner because three of the brand new Subarus he brought to that dealership and filled with E 85 wouldn't start after that.
Cheers mate, Australia
I buy 99 octane VPower cause it's less contaminated with ethanol and the EJ20 in my Legacy doesn't mind the extra octane. In Europe lots of people started buying premium fuels only to avoid 10 % or more ethanol contamination.
I’m so used to seeing Scotty on-screen yelling and waving his arms at me that this vid is almost too calm 😂
Thanks Scotty you re a National treasure
Love me some Scotty!
Do more content like this please!
I use 91 0ctane for my sailboat's Atomic 4 because in Canada Esso does not put ethanol in it.
Hello from Belgium, love the channel content. Just a lil correction 95 RON is the equivalent of 91 PON, and 98 RON is 93 PON.
We have91, 95 and 98 pump gas here in Australia. We also have some e85 pumps for flex fuel cars. Enthusiasts tune for e85 (ethanol) for best performance in turbo 6 and blown V8 custom built applications.
I never had a car built after 2002. And in Canada, we can't get no ethanol gas now. Premium used to be exempt from ethanol but now, government forces gas companies to get ethanol in all grades. Bad for Small engines and old carbureted engines. Government doesn't care...
Where’s the other 18 myths? There was only one about octane and one about coolant…… I was excited for this video but was let down
Here in New York State the lowest octane gas has 10 percent ethanol, the midgrade has less than 10 percent and the premium has none. So it is not the octane rating that makes my Cruse run better on mid grade but the purity of gasoline. The 2014 is not considered flex fuel, but it is not supposed to matter for 10 percent ethanol.
If you have plugin with large battery, buy premium only. Regular will not be good for fuel system if you don't use ICE much. Premium will last good for 6 months.
First of all, i love your channel scotty, i watch it daily and hope the family is well. But answer 3 is right, you only said 1,2, and 4 were wrong. High octane does have a different burn time. It ignites later, but emits energy in a shorter burst than low octane. Cylinder scavenging and afr sensors prove this.
Hey Scotty - wouldn't it also be good to turn the key to the "on" position so the cooling fan will run (if the cooling fan is electric) - to lower the radiator temp so it can suck more heat from the overheating parked car engine?
You never know what someone is going through in life, yes we can tease Scotty about not sounding as enthusiastic as we know him to be. I prey all is well Scotty, thank you for educating🤝🏼
I think he just tones it down for his educational documentary style videos
How about FlexFuel engines? I can at times use e85 or 93, my vehicle does not like lower grade fuels.
Hi Scotty I regularly use 93 octane ethanol free gasoline in my 2023 Mazda mx-5 RF. Talking to a service Rep at the local Mazda dealer he said I should use gasoline with 10% ethanol because it runs cooler than ethanol free gas. Wouldn't that be counter productive in a direct port injection engine and let carbon build up more quickly? Thanks!
Keith

Best information about cars ever. Thankyou.
OK everybody I’m gonna clear this up for you for all the people who are saying that his voice does not sound like him. Here is the reason why and think about it very closely.
You’re just too used to watching him talk instead of actually listening to him explain stuff as in the video, when you cannot actually see him, you only hear his voice it’s still him how do I say it without the charisma and body language your mind is making you think that the voice sounds different mainly because When we talk to someone in person, we not only hear their voice through the air, but we also pick up on subtle physical cues such as facial expressions and body language. These visual cues can affect our perception of their voice. However, when we talk to someone on the phone or online, we only hear their voice without these additional visual cues, which can make their voice sound different to us. Additionally, the quality of the audio transmission can also affect the way we perceive someone's voice, as it may distort certain elements of their speech.
You’re welcome !
Scotty I think 🤔 you are great 👍 mechanic 👨🔧 and you give me great advice as what to do with working on my car 🚗 or truck 🛻 you have a great 👍 day
Red or pink for Toyota.
What about unleaded 88?
Ive been putting that in my van for years
Scotty kilmer you the best
I feel that due to my near blow up of my 2,8 in what was my favorite car in the day, (89 Beretta GT, navy blue, digital dash with "The Heartbeat" ststicker in cursive out rear lol) and chipped with an exhaust that just made that not so powerful 6 sound amazing.... ANYWAY LOL if your heater has no heat at say 2500 rpm you are running by then a dry cooling system. Damage is done or fast approaching but pNEVER put cold water in a hot engine. Running or not. Park it pronto.
What's the best fuel for 2019 Honda Civic LX 2.0 ? Also what can u tell me about this car year Scotty
I never knew there are 2 octane rating standards. Thanks.
Not once anywhere in the video did he say that there is only two standard octanes
There are more than 2
Scotty was referring to the two methods for calculating fuel octane ratings - RON (Europe) research octane number PON (USA) pump octane number.
I’m going to share this video to my friend and call him stupid

Thank you for your help ans your channel 🙏
I noticed around my area the sicker changed from "may contain" 10 % to 15%.
I don't use e85 for fear my stupid caravan will short circuit.
In California I think some gas stations say may 15% ethanol. Avoid those places. Go to 76, Shell, or places that still use the “May have 10% ethanol.”
Actually, we don’t know what’s actually in the gas ⛽️ I mean it may have… Well, does it or doesn’t it? 😂😂😂😂😂
@@ytr8989 true. I am in Canada. I would put it past the govt to put something in the gas to prevent any car from getting 85k miles
Hey Scotty can you make a video of what cars you can buy to have fun and have a lot of horsepower reliable and safe
Honda s2000, older supra, or just buy a classic...nothing is better than an old american classic...
@@richsweeney1115 American classic before my neighbors do not like that car every time I started a whole bunch of carbon dioxide come right out the back of the exhaust pedal so I went German and got a E30 it's very nice reliable fast tuneable and still has that classic stance
How the Atkinson motor compare to different fuel ?
You okay, Scotty?
Hey Scotty, I just did the Weiss oil change on her 2022 Honda CRV. When I got the car off my ramps, all I heard while the engine was running was oil being leaked out onto the ground. I had changed the filter and drain plug. I noticed oil coming from the filter. I double gasketed the filter, with the old filter gasket being on the housing. Still. I lost about a liter of oil. Before I had recognized the mistake. I replaced the remaining oil , and made sure the gasket was removed. My question is, will the car be all right if it ran for about a minute with oil hemorrhaging out?
Yes
My three main vehicles demand premium/high test fuel. 2001 HD FXSTB requires 93. 2009 Pontiac GXP can run on 87 but runs better/more HP on premium/high test. 2014 Mustang GT/CS requires 93. So there’s that
I definitly tank my Motorcycle with the best petrol there is at any give station. It barely uses any fuel like 2l/100km and with it's one cylinder you can really feel the difference with the reduction in knocking.
I got a truck from auction and did not get the chip key. is there any way I can get it started without have to get a key make and programed to get it started?
The Mechanic I go to Disabled my fob , now I have a push button
So what’s the difference between recommended and only? My 22 VB WRX says premium recommended 91 or better.
Ethanol does not save any oil based fuel. It takes a gallon of petro fuel to make a gallon of ethanol. The only good thing it does is remove moisture from your gasoline in the winter.
I've never heard that it takes a gallon of petro fuel to make a gallon of ethanol. That doesn't seem reasonable. When making such a controversial statement, it's best to include a link to a reliable reference. Please do so!
@@geraldwe there's a lot of things you haven't heard. I can't know what you have and haven't heard.
@@mr.monitor. Please include a link to a reliable reference stating that it takes a gallon of petro fuel to make a gallon of ethanol.
@@geraldwe Do some research yourself. It takes 1.5 gallons of ethanol to make the same power as 1 gallon of gasoline. Best case studies have shown a 1 to 2.2 ratio of conversion but its probably much worse. Look into it, then show me where I am wrong.

UK is dupped again .😮 Even less with the added corn starch.. ethonol.😮
So is “Top-Tier” gas actually better or benefit an engine?

High Octane gas here is a dollar more per gallon. No savings there.
Some fuel manufacturers claim that running their premium fuel (for 2500 miles) will help to remove engine deposits inside the engine, because their premium fuel has more additives and detergents in it. Do you think that's possible?
octane rating in wyoming starts at 85 for most stations
in europe i never seen less than 95 in over 20 years of driving...

like scotty describes, europe and states are using different octane ratings
europe 95 is close to states 91

What do you do if your car doesn’t have a temperature gauge?
A warning light will come on on the dashboard if the engine is overheating.
any amount of ethanol in gas will hurt your motors over time. they are completely harmful to seals. ethanol also holds water which if left in a car will corrode
In Denmark, Norway, Sweden (at least) we have 98 octane, not 99 :) Don't know about the southern parts of Europe. This isn't to be nitpicky, just to share info :)
in most of europe you have 95 for regular cars, and 98/99 for more "performance cars"... it actually amazes me that USA uses 80`s octane...
the only place i seen that was in Jordan...
ever wonder why the military and people living in cold weather don't get ethanol😅🤣😂 gas in the winter , ?????? because it collects water and freezes
