I personally own a 2016 M3 and a 2015 Range Rover Sport. They're two of the best vehicles I've ever driven. If you take good care of them with regular maintenance, they'll last a very long time without any issues. Owning a car is one of your biggest life expenses regardless of which brand you choose. I don't think anybody is hating. Objectively speaking, BMWs are less reliable and more expensive to repair. That's not something you can argue because the numbers show it. If anything, you should be thanking people who point out BMW's bad reliability and expensive repair bills, as it provide bad publicity to the company and will nudge them to improve things. Improve things for who? For people like you who like to drive their cars.

Enthusiats will make different car buying decisions than people who only see it as a form of transport. Simple rule of thumb is buy what you want if you can afford to pay for it and maintain it.
Every brand some folks say to avoid have something good to offer to a different group of buyers. Im sure plenty of people here only care about if its gonna last you 15 years and 900k miles. But tons of people want something different. No reason to look down on others just because they have a different perspective

Statistically speaking, BMW and Mercedes are less reliable than Lexus. BMW is definitely know for being sporty, but you can choose from a good range of sports cars in the Lexus family and your repair bills will be lower in the long run. If you just have to have a BMW, then get one, but don't start crying about the repair bills. I'm a driving enthusiast, have a 2010 Lexus IS350. Gets me 0-60 i about 5.5 seconds. It is a fun car to drive and I've spent very little on repairs and maintenance. Few things have broken on this car since I've owned it.

Look under the hood of ANY car these days and you will find plenty of plastic. It's for cost saving and weight reduction. And having owned 7 BMWs now since 2007 I never had any issues with the plastic components. In fact I never had any major issues to begin with. People who complain about them tend to be the ones who buy BMWs, used and with a ton of miles on them, with a questionable maintenance history. And on top of that the previous owner could have beat on the car. Now the 2nd and in many cases the third owner is the one inheriting the problems.

I feel like this is a matter of what your long term plans are. I've had a couple of BMWs, couple of Mazdas, Toyota, Acura, Mitsubishi, VW, and Chevy. Generally I haven't kept many much beyond 100k miles. If the goal is short term sometimes the difference isn't significant. My BMW 135i was mostly trouble free. My M5 had a High pressure fuel pump issue twice in my ownership. With the new BMW while under initial warranty I didn't really have to pay for any maintenance which helped keep it running great and kept cost to mostly fuel and insurance. My one Toyota, a Celica ST that I purchased used required an engine replacement after a few months of ownership (I don't know how well maintained it was prior to getting it off that used car lot). What I tend to hear when researching different vehicles these days is there are good and bad models with the German cars. The thing with the German cars (even the reliable ones) is they are more reliant on the regular maintenance where I tend to hear the Toyota and Honda products can be more forgiving (maybe less maintenance intensive). With that, if you aren't mechanically inclined maintenance can be pricier on the German cars. I will say that the world is an interesting place when Toyota chose to partner with BMW to build the current Supra. I wouldn't assume Toyota would use an unreliable engine in one of their vehicles. Regardless, I don't know that I would think people's choice of vehicle is stupid unless they go in blind (like working a minimum wage job as your sole source of income and buying an M5 and not knowing a brake job will cost you over $3k or a battery is over $400). I think there are people that only care about driving as utility and some that like an exhilaration from their vehicle, some like luxury. If a person can support their choice and they understand what they are getting into they should buy what they like.

Between me and my wife we owned 7 BMWs now since 2007. I'm and enthusiast and really enjoy these cars. We personally never had any major issues with any or them. The most important thing is to maintain them right and not to beat on the car. Warm ups and cool downs have to be done right. Now if you buy a BMW with 10s of thousands of miles on it, with a questionable maintenance history, and zero knowledge of how the car was driven then yes you are probably going to have issues. So buy new, or if used than less than 2 years old and under 10k miles. And most dealers will give you a discount on the 2 year extended warranty, which will now give you a bumper to bumper warranty for 6 years.

My first car was an 04 BMW 325 with 140k miles on it. 20k miles later the engine blew up. And that 20k miles I had it something broke at least once a week. Got rid of it and got a 2019 Toyota Tacoma with 45k miles on it for 41k. That truck never gave me one single problem. But 2 weeks ago someone rear ended it going 40-50mph and totaled it. My dad was driving it with my step brother and dog to pick up his 4Runner from a routine service. The bed and rear of the frame were a little bent. It had 75k miles at that point and insurance gave me 34k for it! I just bought me a 2023 Toyota Camry SE Nightshade for 29k with 8k miles on it. I wouldn’t buy a new Tacoma anymore became of the crazy markups but I think I got a good deal on my Camry. I love Toyota. The peace of mind I get with their reliability is the greatest luxury. I spend enough money between the loan, gas, and insurance. I don’t wanna pay for a mechanic all the time too.

    Happy New Year Scotty! 🥳
To each his/her own! I reside in Canada and own a rare collection of older AMG's ranging from 1996 tto 2006. I perform all of the work and maintenance myself. The parts that I purchase online in the USA are far more inexpensive than Toyota parts are here in Canada. They also come with a lifetime replacement warranty from fcpeuro which is something that I'll never find for my '21 Tundra. I purchased an '06 AMG E55 secondhand for $15500 CAD and it has a current market value of $33K-$37K USD. Every AMG model that I purchased has appreciated and skyrocketed in value. I personally would never purchase a newer model due to reliability and depreciation. It has nothing to do with pretending to be rich, however it has everything to do with enjoying what each model has to offer. There's nothing wrong with owning something rare and at the same time maintaining a piece of automotive history. Who am I to question or condemn someone else's choice of vehicle. Life is about what each and every one of us enjoys. Why that seems to bother other's, I have no idea. Again, to each his/her own.

I got 3 used Mercs. 2001 E55 AMG is the newest, a 1990 190E (aka "Baby Benz") is the oldest, and my daily is a 2000 C280 Sport. C280 has the Sport package with firmer suspension, larger wheels and dual-tone leather seats. It's got an aluminum V6 with a magnesium intake, 8qt oil pan, 3 valves per cyl, dual plugs, the infamous 722.6 5spd manu-matic trans, fold down rear seats, sunroof, great stereo. It gets about 18-20mpg around town and 30-35mpg hwy @75+mph. Better mpg is easily achievable if I were to put in the effort. But I don't, I drive it like I stole it everywhere. It's amazing that I even have a license. I got it about 7 years ago with about 78k miles on it and have about 114k now. I don't drive a lot. Other than oil and trans fluid changes, I had to put in a new water pump and plugs and wires just because. Insurance is about $500 a year for liability only. I paid $5K for it, and that includes 4 new tires, 4 new discs and pads, a steering stabilizer and steering link, tax & license...AND...$1200 shipping from another state! So far that's $715 a year for a sweet, classy ride. And I'll have this thing another 10 years easy. The E55 is a beast and the 190 is a mini-tank. They're both solid, safe, reliable and equally cost efficient. Mainly because I do all my own maintenance and repair.

This might be down to different ownership profiles for cars. I suspect in Europe we dont keep our cars for as long as people seem to in the USA. Most people in Europe wont run a car after about 70,000 miles. That seems quite common in the US. So maybe thats the big difference.

80s and early 90s german cars were great and reliable, after the 2000s I think the manufacturers deliberately have planned obsolescence to the cars so the rich buyers would buy a new model every few years but the used cars become super unreliable and money pits.

Mercedes and BMWs were the best cars of the 1980s and '90s, by far. They were elegant and powerful tanks unlike anyother - Sweden's Volvos were also at that level but without the performance and luxury being offered by the Germans. Yes, the Japanese were reliable then but they were boring and highly unsafe soda cans on wheels by comparison. Quality and safety is more equal among manufacturers now.

My wife and I both drive 6 pot Mercedes E class and have done so since the 90s. We update them every 4/5 years. Yes servicing is more costly than a Toyota or Mazda. We have NEVER had a major repair job. However as we have the cars regularly serviced and they are never older than 5 years I wouldn't expect to have any major repairs either. I have nothing against Lexus but they are pretty boring/conservative type vehicles. We bought Mazda 3 for our kids when they were teens. They turned out very reliable. Maybe my wife and I are stupid but we buy and drive what we like and have NEVER had any of the issues you seem concerned about. It really is pretty simple, if you want to buy a Toyota and keep it for 25 years and put hundreds of thousands of miles on it then that's great. But some people have no interest whatsoever in keeping a car for 25 years or putting hundreds of thousands of miles on ANY car. Each to their own. Merry Christmas Mr Scotty!

The better performance is worth it. I've done air compressor replacement, vibration damper but the X5 35D has been a solid performer plenty of power and performance. Just got the X5M it is really nice. The i3 is high performance, since it is the early model the range isn't great but other than that it is really fun to drive.
