Yes. When we go anywhere near the ordinal numbers during my Finnish lessons it feels like black magic.

Oh cases! Our lovely cases! You will learn about word stems and consonant gradation. Otherwise the Finnish case system is quite easy to master.

  • @alexeirahamov5650

Here are the SHORT manual for the cases (I use Finnish names, you basicly replace -tiivi => -tive for English names and make some minor letter changes):
The first rule: Adding endings change some letters before them. These changes are almost always regular (=the same in every same kind of word/situation) but there are a lot of rules for them. The same rules apply to verbs, adjectives, as well. These rules you just have to learn. These letter changes make the pronunciation easier basicly and that is kind of reason for them.
The second rule: You distinguish the plural forms based on "i/j" almost in the end of each word ie. before the actual case ending EXECPT in Nomitatiivi where the plural ending is different. The actual case endings are the same in singular and plural.
    1. Nominatiivi = basic form, nothing special, plural has ending "-t", singular "auto", plural "autot"
    2. Genetiivi = something's/body's or of somebody/thing, ending "-n", singular "auton", plural "autojen"
    3. Akkusatiivi = sth/sb is an object, sth is done to sth/sb. This is a little unorthodox to say BUT Finnish have Akkusatiivi ONYL FOR PERSONAL PRONOUNS (minä->minut, sinä->sinut etc.). In all other situations we use Nominatiivi or Genetiivi as replacement for Akkusatiivi if sth/sb is an object. The linguistics say that "the Finnish Akkusatiivi is made in the same way as Nominatiivi or Genetiivi" but it is easier to say and learn that IT IS Nominatiivi or Genetiivi.
    4. Partitiivi = about sth/sb, part of sth/sb, some amount/not all of sth/sb, "I drink (not all) milk"/"I tell you (not all) about my mum", ending "-a/-ä", "-ta/-tä", singular "autoa", plural "autoja"
    5. Esiivi = (acts) as sth/sb, "I work as a teacher", ending "-na/-nä", singular "autona", plural "autoina".
    6. Translatiivi = (starts to act/changes to be) sth/sb or as sth/sb, "I want to be a teacher", ending "-ksi", singular "autoksi", plural "autoiksi".
    7. Inessiivi = in sth/sb, "I am in the car", ending "-ssa/-ssä", singular "autossa", plural "autoissa".
    8. Elatiivi = from inside of sth/sb, "I came out of the car", ending "-sta/-stä", singular "autosta", plural "autoista".
    9. Illatiivi = to inside of sth/sb, "I went into the car", ending double vocal + n or h between the the two of double vocals + n (doubles the last of the vocals of the word before ending), singular "autoon", plural "autoihin".
    10. Adessiivi = on (the top of) sth/sb, "I stand on (the top of) the car", ending "-lla/-llä", singular "autolla", plural "autoilla".
    11. Ablatiivi = from (the top of) sth/sb, "I came down from (the top of) the car", ending "-lta/-ltä", singular "autolta", plural "autoilta"
    12. Allatiivi = to (the top of) sth/sb, "I climed on (the top of) the car", ending "-lle", singular "autolle", plural "autoille".
The next case is seldom used for substantives but quite common for verbs:
    13. Abessiivi = without sth/sb, "I came here without the car", ending "-tta/-ttä", singular "autotta", plural "autoitta". The meaning for verb forms is "without doing something", "I came here NOT DRIVING the car" whatever it means practically, maybe as a passenger or even by bus :)
The next case is seldom used for everything:
    14. Komitatiivi = sth/sb with sth/sb, "I came here my cars with me", NOTE: Komitatiivi does NOT mean exactly the same as "I came here with my cars/with the cars" but "... my cars with me". The owner of something that comes along is generally the subject of the sentence. Ending -ine + possesive suffix. Singular for "you" as the subject "autoinesi", plural the same.
The next case is very seldom used substantives (only in sayings) but very common for verbs:
    15. Instuktiivi = (using) sht/sb as tool, with the means of sth/sb, "I came here using my car (as a means of transport)", ending "-n", often the same as Genetiivi but often the letter changes of the word are different even if the ending is the same as for Genetiivi, singular "auton" (

Perfect. I was wanting to learn this for a long while now. And knowing the puhekieli vs kirjakieli helps a lot, so we don't get confused when we comm across either.
Anyway. I'm now advancing my Finnish studies and should soon be able to make some conversation. The main limitation is vocabulary. Basic grammar stuff is mostly settled in on.

I would simply say (in puhekieli): eka, toka, kolmas, neljäs, vii(d)es, kuu(d)es, seittemäs, kaheksas, yheksäs, kymmenes. The prononunciation of the 'd' sound in vii(d)es and kuu(d)es depends on how much I want to use my Eastern Finnish background. I do use both pronunciations: Viides or viies and kuudes or kuues.

How would you abbreviate the Finnish ordinals numbers? 1ka? 2ka? 3as?

    • @Spide19
      @Spide19 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

We abbreviate the ordinals by adding a dot after the number. The same goes with dates. For example 18. maaliskuuta = 18th of march. 1st = 1. 2nd = 2. etc.
