Hei-hei Kat! :) it's teacher Cris from Manila/Jyväskylä, Actually what distinguishes you Kat from all other finnish youtuber (which I binge watch) is your pronunciation which can be imitated as the video plays. It's for a language teacher, the form of the mouth and the roll of the tongue can be observed with YOUR pace which is important. So viewers can learn ä, Ö, y, V and H, which can be missed if you are too FAST . nothing weird with your delivery or pronunciation: They are weird because they don't really know how to address language learners in the beginner level, and YOU DO. It's important to syllabicate it so learners can decode how the spelt Finnish words should be pronounced and vice versa. Keep up your great work!

Mikä is more literally which than what in my opinion. Also, you shouldn't listen to those who criticise you as they clearly never learned a new language nor have an idea on how a language has to be taught. I think it is great to speak slowly so beginners can perfectly distinct each syllables. :)

I think that "breaking" the words in syllables is very helpful to learn the proper pronunciation of the words and how you actually "break" the word in sylllables.
Finnish is a trip, so any help to making it easier to learn is welcome.

I really think you are the best for teaching Finnish in youtube specially when you pronounced the words so slowly and clearly ,it honestly helps a lot and your fluent English without accents too☺️which is so much easier to understand.
I have been in Finland for 2 full years, only can speak a few words and read words which related to food since I am a chef.
I tried to learn this difficult language, but it put me off from learning since it seems to be so difficult and complicated in some other videos. But you made Finnish easier to learn and even teach informal slangs.
I like languages, I am a native Cantonese speaker + Mandarin (since I was born in Hong Kong) I also speak English since I did my high school in Australia , university in UK , some Japanese/French( I also lived, worked, studied in these two place for a bit too). I had been looking for materials to learn Finnish, but it is not easy. Since 1 March when I was tested Covid +ve , and I saw your TH-cam videos, I started to learn from them. So far it became my everyday routine to watch your videos to learn Finnish finally!
Thanks so much, I am very appreciated your efforts on making these videos. I am sure it helps so many people to learn Finnish in an easier way. I am learning Finnish cooking and baking with my Finnish baker friend too. And I like your other TH-cam channel too😍. Hope you have a good day, kiitos paljon 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Dear KatChats, I know this is an old video but I feel like commenting given how you started this video. I think you are a very good teacher. (Why aren't you one?). I once unsubscribed to you because I found that you sometimes make complicated &/ unnecessary additions like those diphthongs (was it?) that you, yourself, mentioned aren't even really used in Finnish. However, whatever critic I have for you is nothing to compared to your good points. You breaking down things for us and slowly repeating things for us was and is helpful for my memorization. I found myself subscribing again. Just this other day when my memory blanked during a test, it was your videos that first came clear to my mind. That said, thank you. I just want to reiterate how good you are. Kiitos paljon.

I often hear that Finnish consonants sound harsh, but tbh, I feel like it's relatively "soft" in speaking. As a native German speaker, I do have to soften my way of saying things - except for the r, of course. :D
I love your videos btw, they're very helpful. Keep up the good work!

    Moi Kat,
just saw you in Aleksis' walk around the christmas market video and so checking out your Finnish lessons vids.
For me, your method of breaking up the words into distinct parts really helps, especially with the really long words. I particularly like your '3 stages of pronunciation' way of repeating the words.
Also, your early school way of writing words with a dot separating the parts sound like it's gonna really help me - good learning method.
Looking forward to going through your Finnish lesson - I know it's going to boost my learning, thanks a ton 👍

1:16 I think that if they taught it that way its because it has significance to the phonetics and base structure of the language. That said, it is nice that you teach it the best way you can according to how you learnt. Maybe you can even try and research why it was taught like that. All those are insightful and later on will be helpful to anyone willing to dive deeper into the language.

Hei Kat, the videos are really helpful and the way you break up the words is great. I think a point made by Ambient Epicuros in the comments could be to colour parts of words to match English meanings, like Menetkö (will you go?) would be mene (red) t (blue) ko (green) to match 'will (green) you (blue) go (red). I have seen this on another site and it is very useful to understand how the word is made. Anyway, I hope you can continue these videos and keep studying. Kiitos :)

You are way ahead of me Lara but thanks to you I now know the name of our vibrant young presenter. It was fortuitous that my English friend sent me the link to Katya's videos. I think I can now count in Finnish thanks to Katya and to the Internet. When I was to visit my English friend and her Finnish family, in Espoo in 2010 I thought I should make an effort to learn some Finnish but I failed miserably. Fortunately almost everyone I met spoke to me in English. Katya has now given me renewed hope. Thanks.

Moi! I adore your videos as they cover Finnish grammar and vocabulary in such a simplistic way. Can you make a culture video of maybe you walking around Helsinki, as well as the Helsinki Vantaa airport, ordering at a Starbucks and stuff like that? How about travel words like plane, train, bus, bus stop, taxi, tram, etc. keep up the good work! Keväällä menen lomalle Suomeen.
